Abstract:Through the modulation of the dipolar entropy under an applied electric field (E), a reversible temperature change (ΔT) could be achieved in a dielectric material, which is known as the electrocaloric (EC) effect. Among all EC materials, ferroelectric terpolymer P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) has been regarded as one of the most promising EC materials owing to its large EC effect and superior thermal stability. Yet, the low EC strength limits the application of terpolymers in realistic cooling devices. In this work, using the thermal treatment of quenching and low-temperature annealing, the terpolymers with significantly decreased crystalline size are prepared with their EC performances investigated. Compared to the normal ones, the terpolymers with smaller crystalline size exhibit substantially enhanced EC strength. The better EC performance may be mainly attributed to the lower energy barriers for dipole orientation, which gives rise to higher polarization at low electric fields. This work emphasizes the critical role of crystalline size on the macroscopic properties of EC polymers.

Abstract:The electrocaloric effect in the blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride–trifluoroethylene–chlorofluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)) with small amount of poly(vinylidene fluoride–trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) is investigated. It was found that small amount of P(VDF-TrFE) (∼10 wt. %) can cause a more than 10% increase in the crystallinity in the blends. Although the two polymers form separate crystalline phases, the interfacial couplings to the random defects in the terpolymer convert the normal ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) into a relaxor ferroelectric. As a result, the blends with 10 wt. % of P(VDF-TrFE) exhibit a 30% increase in the adiabatic temperature change over the entire experimental temperature range (20 °C–60 °C).

Abstract:The poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) based ferroelectric and relaxor materials have been proved to be good electrocaloric (EC) materials. To further enhance the EC effect in ferroelectric relaxor terpolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride–trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)), composites such as polymer-polymer blends and nanocomposites filled with inorganic nanoparticles are fabricated and investigated. It is found that the addition of small amount of filler (such as P(VDF-TrFE) or nano-ZrO2) can increase terpolymer’s crystallinity and enhance its relaxor behavior through interface couplings. The increased crystallinity and enhanced relaxor behavior together result in enhanced electrocaloric effect. The results demonstrate the promise of composite approaches in tailoring and enhancing ECE in the relaxor terpolymers.

Abstract:Poly (vinylidene fluoride)- based polymers have a relatively large electrocaloric effect (ECE) but low thermal conductivity. In some studies, the ECE obtained from indirect measurement deviates substantially from direct measurement. In this work, the ECE was investigated in composites containing the ferroelectric poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoro ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)] terpolymer and Al 2 O 3 fillers. The ECE of the composites was directly measured using an infrared thermograph and indirectly obtained utilizing the Maxwell relation. The temperature changes obtained by indirect and direct measurements agree reasonably well with each other. In direct measurement, we found the temperature increase is larger than the temperature decrease at a high field or in the composites with a high concentration of nanoparticles, which can be attributed to the Joule heating effect caused by increased conductivity and dielectric loss. In the extreme case, the Joule heating dominates the temperature change, and only the temperature increase can be observed. Moreover, the temperature change is increased by more than 38% in the composite with 1.5% Al 2 O 3 fillers. One reason for the enhanced ECE is the increase of the polar phase in terpolymer after the addition of the nanoparticles. At the same time, the thermal conductivity of the composite film is also increased by 21% due to the high thermal conductivity of Al 2 O 3 .

Electrocaloric Effect Enhancement in Compositionally Graded Ferroelectric Thin Films Driven by a Needle-to-vortex Domain Structure Transition

Abstract:Obtaining large electrocaloric (EC) effects in ferroelectric materials is a prerequisite for incorporating them into advanced solid-state cooling devices. Based on phase-field simulations, we propose an effective approach for improving the EC effect near room temperature in compositionally graded ferroelectric (CGFE) thin films (e.g., Pb1 - xSrxTiO3) by controlling the compositional gradient along the direction of the thickness of the films. The simulation results reveal the formation of a stable needle-like domain structure in CGFE films with large composition gradients, while a periodic striped domain structure is found in small-composition-gradient CGFE films. The temperature dependence of polarization can be tailored by controlling the composition gradient in the films. With rising temperatures, a notable transition from a needle-like to a vortex domain structure is observed in CGFE films, which is distinguishable from that observed in homogeneous ferroelectric films. Our work demonstrates that the EC effect (the adiabatic temperature change, Delta T) can be greatly improved by the needle-to-vortex domain transition that occurs when the composition gradient is increased. When the composition gradient increases, a larger EC effect is achieved at lower temperatures. Large-composition-gradient films exhibit multiple peaks of Delta T. The local concentration of the total energy near the root of the needle domains is also found to drive the needle-to-vortex domain transition, giving rise to an enhancement of the EC effect in CGFE films. Our study provides a potential pathway for designing ferroelectric thin films with enhanced EC properties for energy-efficient solid-state refrigeration.

Abstract:Greatly enhanced energy density in poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-CTFE)] is realized through interface effects induced by a photo cross-linking method. Being different from nanocomposites with lowered dielectric strength, the cross-linked P(VDF-CTFE)s possess a high breakdown field as well as remarkably elevated polarization, both of which contribute to the enhanced energy density as high as 22.5 J . cm(-3). Moreover, patterned thin films with various shapes and sizes are fabricated by photolithography, which sheds new light on the integration of PVDF-based electroactive polymers into organic microelectronic devices such as flexible pyroelectric/piezoelectric sensor arrays or non-volatile ferroelectric memory devices.

Abstract:The electrocaloric effect (ECE) is enhanced in ferroelectric relaxor terpolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride–trifluoroethylene–chlorofluoroethylene) (P(VDF–TrFE–CFE))/ZrO2 nanocomposites. It was observed that the interface effects between the polymer matrix and nano-fillers enhance the polarization response and provide additional electrocaloric entropy changes. As a consequence, the nanocomposites exhibit a larger ECE than that of the neat terpolymer, i.e., the adiabatic temperature change of the nanocomposite with 3 volume percent of nano-fillers is 120% of that of the neat terpolymer. The results, for the first time, demonstrate that ECE can be tailored and enhanced through nanocomposite approach in the ferroelectric polymers.

Abstract:This paper investigates the electrocaloric effect (ECE) in polymer nanocomposite films containing ferroelectric poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)] terpolymer matrix and lead-free nanopowders. The nanopowders include pure BaTiO3 and rare-earth substituted Ba0.94R0.04TiO3, where R = La, Nd, Sm, prepared by a modified sol-hydrothermal method. The substitution influences the lattice parameters, but all samples exhibit a perovskite-type tetragonal phase. The dopant enhances the relaxation behavior of the matrix and decreases the current. Using the Maxwell equations, the ECE performance is systematically studied for all samples. As the rare-earth ionic radius decreases, the Curie temperature of the nanocomposite increases and the dielectric constant decreases. The isothermal entropy changes (ΔS), adiabatic temperature changes (ΔT), cooling energy densities (Q), and electrocaloric strengths versus temperature exhibit different dependences on electric field (E). The results demonstrate that rare-earth doping can effectively modify the ECE. Our composites achieve large EC strength values (|ΔT|/|ΔE|) of 7 to 21 μK m kV−1 over a wide temperature range of 25 to 60 °C and electric field range of 750 to 1250 kV cm−1 and provide typical examples of polymer ECE materials containing rare-earth doped nanopowders.Graphical abstractThe preparation of the polymer nanocomposites and the adiabatic temperature changes and the corresponding electrocaloric strengths of the samples.

Abstract:Endowing bulk electrocaloric polymers with excellent thermal conductivity is a superior solution to the high-efficient and precise management of tremendous heat from high-power-density electronic devices. Semi-crystalline polymer P(VDF-TrFE-CFE), i.e., poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene), has a predominant amorphous phase of randomly entangled chains and abundant interface, leading to localized behavior in phonon heat conduction and thereby low thermal conductivity. To enhance the thermal transport performance, electrocaloric polymer films were mechanically stretched or fabricated by electrospun to achieve highly aligned molecular chains. Chain orientation brought about a 2.4- and 1.6-times increase in the thermal diffusion coefficient of the stretched and electrospun films, respectively. Interestingly, after mechanical stretching, the thermal conductivity of the film was increased by a factor of two. In contrast, the electrospun film had a slightly lower thermal conductivity than that of the unoriented one. A remarkable discrepancy in the electrocaloric properties was observed, where the stretched polymer film reached a much higher adiabatic temperature change under an applied electric field than that of the electrospun film. Our strategy provides a perspective on designing a promising thermal management system through the integration of active refrigeration and passive heat dissipation in bulk electrocaloric polymers.

Abstract:The electroactive properties of PVDF-based ferroelectric polymers can be tailored by blending. In order to investigate the tunability of electrocaloric effect (ECE) and ferroelectric responses, blends of ferroelectric relaxor poly(vinylidene difluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)) terpolymer and normal ferroelectrics poly(vinylidene difluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) copolymer are studied. At low copolymer content (<15 wt%), the coupling between the relaxor terpolymer and the nano-phase copolymer converts the copolymer into relaxor and causes an increase in the crystallinity compared with neat terpolymer. As a result, the blends exhibit an enhanced relaxor polarization response and a significant increase in the electrocaloric effect compared with those in the neat terpolymer. At high copolymer content, the blends exhibit mixed structures of the two components. By varying composition, the dielectric and ferroelectric properties of blends can be tuned in the range between the copolymer and terpolymer. This blend system provides a model system to study how random defects influence the polarization response in the normal ferroelectric copolymer, and to understand the relationship between the polarization response and ECE in the blends. The results demonstrate the promise of nanocomposite approaches in tailoring and enhancing ECE and ferroelectric properties in the ferroelectric polymers. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:With excellent stability, flexibility, and piezoelectricity, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymer [P(VDF-TrFE)] have received much attention. However, the applications for its ferroelectricity still suffer the drawbacks of relative low remanent polarization (P r) and high coercive electric field (E c). In this work, P(VDF-TrFE) composite films were fabricated with the additive of organic perovskite ferroelectric MDABCO-NH4I3. Compared with pure P(VDF-TrFE), the P r increases from 7.17 to 12.7 μC cm−2, while E c decreases from 516 to 324 kV cm−1 as well as increased permittivity from 15.6 to 37.0. These may provide an alternative way for ferroelectric memory, sensors, and energy storage devices.
Giant negative electrocaloric effect measured by indirect method in X-ray irradiated P(VDF-TrFE) films

Abstract:Flexible solid-state cooling devices with high efficiency are attracted to ferroelectric polymers with excellent negative electrocaloric (EC) effects. It is challenging to obtain a large negative EC effect in ferroelectric polymers due to the lack of tunable techniques. A giant negative EC response was obtained in the poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) copolymers (P(VDF-TrFE), 70/30 mol ratios) irradiated with high-energy X-rays. The irradiated P(VDF-TrFE) films showed an adiabatic temperature change of −13.5 K at 40 MV/m under a dose of 5 Mrad obtained by the indirect method. This significant negative EC effect is attributed to the enhancement of crystalline due to the entry of polymer molecules into the amorphous to crystalline structure and the reduction of heat capacity due to the increase of crosslinking. In addition, X-rays irradiation improves the dielectric coefficient from 15 to 22. This research indicates that irradiation can modify the negative EC properties of ferroelectric polymers for solid-state cooling.

Abstract:The dipoles in ferroelectric copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) can be driven by electric field, introducing phonon transport modulations through polarizing molecular chains. The thermal conductivity in single 75/25 P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers is found to increase with electric field related phonon renormalization, resulted from change in vibrational assignment excited by polarization process. This is evidenced by a direct change of bond energy and bond length in 75/25 P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers from Raman characterization under polarization electric field. The experimental results provide further intuitive evidences that the size of ferroelectric polymers could directly affect the ferroelectricity from the size-dependent thermal transport measurement.

Abstract:Copolymers of polyvinylidene fluoride and trifluorethylene [P(VDF-TrFE)] have potential applications in wearable and implantable electromechanical devices since they are mechanically flexible, and biocompatible. A tailored electric cyclic process is employed to enhance both electrical and mechanical properties in P(VDF-TrFE) 65/35 mol % copolymer films. The films are subjected to lower and higher field magnitude electric cycling successively. For electrical properties, enhancement in remnant polarization, dielectric and piezoelectric constants occurs. From mechanical point of view, strengthening in the fracture strength happens. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction techniques examine changes of the orientation of the molecular chains, grain size, and crystallinity after electric cycling for the copolymer films. Scanning electron microscopy reveals evolutions of the microstructure, including rod-like textures and fractography of the films. The results indicate that electric cycling causes the molecular chains to orient gradually along the direction perpendicular to the applied electric field. Consequently, an enhancement of 12.2% and 45% is realized for the remnant polarization and fracture strength, respectively for P(VDF-TrFE) 65/35 copolymer film. (C) 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The solid-state refrigeration technique based on the electrocaloric effect (ECE) of ferroelectric materials has been regarded as a promising alternative to vapor compression systems due to its advantages of high efficiency and easy miniaturization. However, the small adiabatic temperature change (ATC) and narrow operating temperature range of ferroelectric materials are key obstacles for their practical applications of ECE refrigeration. To improve the ECE performance of ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride) [P(VDF-TrFE)], PbZr1−xTixO3 (PZT) nanoparticles with larger polarization is herein introduced to form ferroelectric nanocomposites. The phase-field simulation is employed to investigate the dynamic hysteresis loops and corresponding domain evolution of the ferroelectric nanocomposites. The temperature-dependent ATC values are calculated using the indirect method based on the Maxwell relation. The appearance of the double hysteresis loop is observed in P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite filled with PbZr0.1Ti0.9O3 nanoparticles [P(VDF-TrFE)–PZT0.9], which is mainly caused by a microscopic domain transition from single domain to polar vortex. Compared to the P(VDF-TrFE), enhanced ATC values associated with the domain transition are unveiled in P(VDF-TrFE)–PZT0.9, and the temperature range of excellent ECE is also effectively broadened. In addition, as the component x of filled PZT nanoparticles increases to cross the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), the maximum ATC value shows a significant increase. The results presented in this work not only explain the mechanism of domain transition induced excellent ECE in the P(VDF-TrFE)–PZT nanocomposite, but also stimulate future studies on enhancing ECE of P(VDF-TrFE) by introducing ferroelectric nanofillers.

Abstract:Highlights • The negative strain properties of P(VDF-TrFE) films have been verified and further modulated by incorporating PTO nanosheets. • Electro-strain and ferroelectric properties were enhanced by combined effect of nanosheets and in-situ electrostatic field. • A possible mechanism has been proposed, which is attributed to the flexibility of amorphous phase and content of β-phase. Traditional ferroelectric materials, such as lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics, exhibit positive strain when subjected to an electric field along the polarization direction. In contrast, the piezoelectric polymer polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and its copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) display unique negative strain properties. While extensive research has focused on understanding the origin and mechanisms of this negative strain, limited efforts have been directed toward regulating these properties. This study optimizes the electro-strain and ferroelectric properties of P(VDF-TrFE) piezoelectric films through the synergistic effect of PbTiO 3 nanosheets and an in-situ electrostatic field. Our results demonstrate that while the incorporation of PbTiO 3 nanosheets does not notably enhance ferroelectricity, it significantly improves electro-strain properties, particularly negative strain, which increases from –0.097% to –0.185%, an enhancement of 91%. Moreover, the ferroelectric polarization and positive strain of P(VDF-TrFE) are further enhanced under the combined influence of PbTiO 3 nanosheets and in-situ electrostatic field, increasing maximum polarization from 10.79 μC/cm 2 to 13.16 μC/cm 2 , a 22% improvement, and positive strain from 0.213% to 0.267%, a 25% enhancement. We propose a possible mechanism for these improvements, attributed to the enhanced flexibility of the amorphous phase and increased content of polar β-phase in P(VDF-TrFE) films under this synergistic effect. This work highlights novel strategies for controlling the electro-strain and ferroelectric properties of P(VDF-TrFE) piezoelectric films. Abstract:The dynamic dipole switching in the relaxor ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene‐chlorofluoroethylene) terpolymer, P(VDF‐TrFE‐CFE), under an externally applied electric field is studied with operando Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Short trans sequences (T3G) along the polymer chains are found to be responsible for the reversible entropy change with the field, accounting for a large electrocaloric effect. Relaxor ferroelectric polymers exhibiting a giant electrocaloric effect (ECE) can potentially be used to create next‐generation solid‐state coolers. Under an electric field, poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene‐chlorofluoroethylene) terpolymer goes through a large dipolar entropy change producing a high adiabatic temperature change (ΔTECE). This work resolves the molecular origins of the large entropy change behind the electric field‐induced dipole switching. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy equipped with a high voltage source is used to operandoly observe the characteristic molecular vibrational modes. A short‐range trans (T) conformation of the CF2‐CH2 dyads interrupted by a gauche (G) conformation, e.g., TTTG in the terpolymer chain, undergoes a dynamic transformation that leads to a corresponding ΔTECE whenever an electric field is applied. The molecular dynamics simulation also proves that the energy barrier that the transformation from TTTGs into a long T sequence overcomes is smaller than that for all other conformations. A mixed solvent system is used to obtain T3G‐enriched terpolymer films exhibiting a 4.02 K ΔTECE at 60 MV m−1 and these films are employed to manufacture a 2‐layer‐cascaded cooling device that achieves a 6.7 K temperature lift, the highest reported value for a 2‐layer cascaded device made of fluoropolymers.

Abstract:ABSTRACTBlend of polymers is an effective way to tailor the ferroelectric responses and improve the energy storage properties of polymers. In this work, the microstructure and dielectric responses of the blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene‐chlorofluoroethylene) [P(VDF‐TrFE‐CFE)] have been studied. It is found that the addition of PVDF disturbs the crystallization process of P(VDF‐TrFE‐CFE), leading to lower crystallinity and smaller crystalline size. The aforementioned microstructure changes result in tailored ferroelectric responses. Dielectric responses show that the blend with 10 wt % PVDF achieves larger polarization response under high electric field (above 300 MV/m) due to the interfacial polarization. Because of the tailoring effect and the interfacial polarization, the blend with 10 wt % PVDF exhibits higher energy density and efficiency. Moreover, the breakdown strength (Eb) is also improved by adding a small amount of PVDF into the terpolymer. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014, 131, 40994.
