Abstract:Ferrihydrite is ubiquitous in natural environments, and its transformation significantly influences the fate of heavy metals. Although Pb(ii) adsorption on iron oxides has been extensively studied, there is still a knowledge gap on the fate of Pb during the dynamic processes of iron oxide transformation. In this study, a set of wet chemistry experiments, spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) integrated with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) were used to unravel Pb interactions with iron oxides during ferrihydrite transformation processes under abiotic conditions. Wet chemistry experiments, STEM-EDS elemental mapping and line scans, and quantitative analysis suggested that Pb penetrated into hematite nanoparticles during the transformation processes. STEM analysis at sub-nanoscales, XRD fine scans, and XAS analysis provided evidence of Pb incorporation into the crystal structures of hematite nanoparticles, in which Pb distributed along the zone axis and enlarged the lattice distance of hematite. These results advanced our understanding of the dynamic interactions of Pb with iron oxides by offering new perspectives about the critical roles of chemical speciation, nano-scale spatial distribution, and atomic coordination environments in controlling the geochemical dynamics of heavy metals.

Abstract:Ferrihydrite often precipitates with humic acid in natural ways, affecting the fate of lead ions, the stabilization of humic acid, and the aging process of ferrihydrite. A series of 2-line ferrihydrite-humic (Fh-HA) acid with varying C loadings has been prepared, the morphology and surface properties of Fh-HA organo-minerals have been characterized, and the adsorption property of Pb ions onto Fh-HA has been studied. The results indicated that a strong interference of HA to ferrihydrite 2-line Fh dominated mineral phase in all samples, but with increasing C/Fe molar ratios, the crystallinity gradually weakened, particles became smaller, and SSA decreased significantly. The data of Mössbauer spectra confirmed C loadings changed the unit structure of ferrihydrite. Fh-HA performed good adsorption properties to Pb (II): high efficiency and big capacity, especially Fh-HA_2.0. pH had great effect on Pb (II) sorption, the pH change affects not only the amounts of competitive ions in solutions, but also the dissociation and protonation of functional groups on the surface of Fh-HA. Sorption kinetics can be well modeled by a pseudo-second-order model, and the process was controlled by film and intraparticle adsorption simultaneously. The adsorption isotherms can be well described by Freundlich isotherm model. The detailed determination results of Fe 2p, O 1 s, and Pb 4f spectra before and after lead adsorption showed mononuclear bidentate or binuclear bidentate ligands occurring on Fh-HA surface, forming stable inner-sphere complex. By comparison of Mössbauer spectra and TEM images, with aging time, a slower evolution of iron oxide/oxyhydroxide phases in Fh-HA-Pb system happened compared to pure ferrihydrite. Ferrihydrite has transformed to a combination of ferrihydrite, goethite, and hematite phases. In this study, the determination of C-Fe interaction, Pb fate influenced by Fh-HA, and transformation of ferrihydrite would have a great implication to application of Fh-HA precipitates in remediation for surface water or groundwater polluted by heavy metals.

Nano Scale Visualization of Enhanced Adsorption and Distribution of Humic Acid on Hematite: Effect of Pb(II) Ions

Abstract:The interactions between soil organic matter (SOM) and minerals are key processes controlling the organic carbon (OC) stability in the environment, but the underlying mechanisms responsible for OC distribution on minerals are still not clear. In this study, a common crystalline iron oxide, hematite, and a typical SOM component, humic acid (HA), were chosen to explore, at the nano and even sub-nano scales, HA adsorption and distribution on hematite under the impact of Pb(II) ions. Adsorption experiments and spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) demonstrated that Pb(II) enhanced the adsorption of HA on hematite, but the nano scale distributions of HA varied between experimental conditions. The Cs-STEM, EDS, and the EELS analyses clearly unveiled that, with the presence of Pb(II), the hematite aggregates became more dispersed, and HA was not only adsorbed on the edges hematite nanoparticles, but also was localized in the extended areas away from the hematite particles/aggregates, which resulted in a heterogeneous distribution of OC in hematite-HA systems. Our imaging methods provided direct visualization of the mineral-SOM-metal interactions at nano scales, which shed lights on the underlying mechanisms for OC stabilization in natural environments and can enable more robust constraints in the models of organic matter-mineral interactions.
Coupled Kinetics of Ferrihydrite Transformation and As(V) Sequestration under the Effect of Humic Acids: A Mechanistic and Quantitative Study.

Abstract:In natural environments, kinetics of As(V) sequestration/release is usually coupled with dynamic Fe mineral transformation, which is further influenced by the presence of natural organic matter (NOM). Previous work mainly focused on the interactions between As(V) and Fe minerals. However, there is a lack of both mechanistic and quantitative understanding on the coupled kinetic processes in the As(V) Fe mineral NOM system. In this study, we investigated the effect of humic acids (HA) on the coupled kinetics of ferrihydrite transformation into hematite/goethite and sequestration of As(V) on Fe minerals. Time-resolved As(V) and HA interactions with Fe minerals during the kinetic processes were studied using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, chemical extractions, stirred-flow kinetic experiments, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Based on the experimental results, we developed a mechanistic kinetics model for As(V) fate during Fe mineral transformation. Our results demonstrated that the rates of As(V) speciation changes within Fe minerals were coupled with ferrihydrite transformation rates, and the overall reactions were slowed down by the presence of HA that sorbed on Fe minerals. Our kinetics model is able to account for variations of Fe mineral compositions, solution chemistry, and As(V) speciation, which has significant environmental implications for predicting As(V) behavior in the environment.

Abstract:Ferrihydrite (Fh) is a naturally occurring nanoscale iron oxyhydroxide mineral. It is of great interest in soil science and environmental science due to its extremely high surface area and reactivity. In this work, Fh samples were prepared by three procedures (named Fh-1, Fh-2, and Fh-3). The formation of Fh-1 went through a pH change from acidic to neutral, and the formation of Fh-2 went through a pH change from alkaline to neutral, while Fh-3 was formed at a constant neutral pH. The three Fhs were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption isotherms, and low-temperature magnetic techniques. All these techniques indicate that the microstructure and formation process of Fh are strongly coupled. More importantly, the differences in microstructure among the three Fhs are reflected not only in their bulk structure but also in their surface properties. The adsorption and degradation of azo dye Mordant Yellow 10 (MY10) on the three Fhs were investigated. On the one hand, compared with Fh-1 and Fh-2, Fh-3 exhibits a high density of active sites per unit area, which leads to a large adsorption capacity. On the other hand, a strong affinity between Fh-3 and MY10 results in a more irreversible adsorption and a low degradation rate. The results from the current study shed new light on the synergetic effects of porosity and the variations of local structure on photocatalysis by iron oxide particles.
Coexisting Hematite Induces and Accelerates the Transformation of Ferrihydrite: Pathway and Underlying Mechanisms

Abstract:Crystallization induced by heterogeneous surfaces is an important process in geochemistry, biomineralization, and material synthesis, but the effects of heterogeneous surfaces on the transformation of metastable phases into new crystals remain poorly understood. In this work, we studied the transformation behaviors of ferrihydrite (Fhy) in the presence of hematite (Hem) nanoplates with specific exposed facets ({001} and {113}) at different pH (4, 7, and 12). Our results reveal that the Hem nanoplates can induce the transformation of Fhy to Hem/Gth (goethite) and accelerate the transformation rate. This effect is primarily achieved by modulating the dissolution-recrystallization process, i.e., accelerating the dissolution of Fhy and promoting the heterogeneous crystallization (to form new Hem/Gth) at the surface of added Hem nanoplates, and solution pH plays crucial roles in these processes. In specific, a relatively low supply of dissolved Fe3+ from Fhy at pH 4 favors island growth of new Hem at the {001} facets of Hem nanoplates and layer-by-layer growth at the {113} facets, which eventually results in the formation of thermodynamically stable pseudo-cubic morphology (exposing {012} facets). Because of the very low solubility of Fhy at pH 7, the induced transformation of Fhy by Hem nanoplates is rather weak. While at pH 12, a high supply of dissolved Fe3+ from Fhy benefits the layer-by-layer growth at {001} facets of Hem and the significant heteroepitaxial growth of Gth at the {113} facets. Besides the induced transformation, the direct solid-state transformation of Fhy into Hem and the homogeneous crystallization of dissolved Fe3+ also contribute to the transformation of Fhy. This study, for the first time, well reveals the mechanisms of induced transformation of Fhy in the presence of Hem nanoparticles, which will advance our understanding of the significant effects of heterogeneous surfaces in modulating the transformation of metastable phases, and supplement the transformation mechanisms of Fhy.
Effects of humic acid and fulvic acid on the sequestration of copper and carbon during the iron oxide transformation

Abstract:In natural environments, the iron oxide transformation is associated with natural organic matter (NOM) and heavy metals. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the dynamic interactions among NOM, iron oxides, and heavy metals during the iron oxide transformation process, which has significant implications on the fate of metals and carbon (C) in the environment. In this study, two types of NOM, fulvic acid and humic acid (FA and HA) were used to elucidate the influence of NOM on the iron oxide transformation and the dynamic distribution and speciation of Cu and C during the iron oxide transformation. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy showed that both FA and HA decreased the rates of ferrihydrite transformation to hematite. The EXAFS analysis of Cu speciation and spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (Cs-STEM) showed that Cu could be incorporated into the hematite particles while HA and FA hindered the incorporation of Cu, consistent with the chemical extraction results. Compared with FA, HA resulted in more extractable Cu by diluted acid and less Cu incorporation into iron oxides. The Cs-STEM results showed that both HA and FA resulted in the formation of ellipsoidal hematite particles with a loose structure. Batch extraction experiments and the Cs-STEM imaging, collectively, indicated that HA might penetrate into the loose and porous structure of hematite nanoparticles, which was less evident for FA. Results in this study help to understand the environmental behaviors of C and Cu during the iron oxide transformation process and also shed light on the nanoscale mechanisms of C sequestration within iron oxides.
Sorption of Pb(II) by Nanosized Ferrihydrite Organo-Mineral Composites Formed by Adsorption versus Coprecipitation

Abstract:Nanosized iron hydroxides and organic matter (OM) are important scavengers of nutrient elements and dissolved trace-metals in geologic systems. Despite this, little is known about the sorption characteristics of metals to the iron-OM nanocomposites formed by adsorption (adsorption of OM on presynthesis ferrihydrite) versus coprecipitation (formation of ferrihydrite in the presence of OM). This study investigates lead (Pb) sorption behaviors on ferrihydrite-humic acid (Fh-HA) composites through batch sorption coupled with Pb-L-III, EXAFS. We report that composites formed by coprecipitation have a higher carbon content, smaller specific surface area, and faster Pb sorption rate compared to the equivalent composites formed by adsorption of HA to preformed Fh. Pb sorption on the composites is enhanced at pH < 5 than that on pure Fh, and coprecipitated and adsorbed composites sorb almost equivalent amount of Pb. We identify a bidentate edge-sharing Pb complex on the ferrihydrite surface with a Pb-Fe bond length of 3.33 angstrom and a bidentate inner-sphere Pb complex on the HA fraction of the composite. More Pb ions are associated with the HA fraction of the composites with the increases of pH from 4 to 6.5. More Pb ions are sequestrated by the organic fraction in the adsorbed than in the coprecipitated composites. This research therefore has important implications for predicting the mobility and fate of Pb in iron and organic rich soils and sediments.
Fe(II)-Catalyzed Transformation of Ferrihydrite with Different Degrees of Crystallinity.

Abstract:Natural occurring ferrihydrite (Fh) nanoparticles have varying degrees of crystallinity, but how Fh crystallinity affects its transformation behavior remains elusive. Here, we investigated the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation of Fh with different degrees of crystallinity (i.e., Fh-2h, Fh-12h, and Fh-85C). X-ray diffraction patterns of Fh-2h, Fh-12h, and Fh-85C exhibited two, five, and six diffraction peaks, respectively, indicating the order of crystallinity: Fh-2h < Fh-12h < Fh-85C. Fh with the lower crystallinity has a higher redox potential, corresponding to the faster Fe(II)-Fh interfacial electron transfer and Fe(III)labile production. With the increase of initial Fe(II) concentration ([Fe(II)aq]int.) from 0.2 to 5.0 mM, the transformation pathways of Fh-2h and Fh-12h change from Fh → lepidocrocite (Lp) → goethite (Gt) to Fh → Gt, but that of Fh-85C switches from Fh → Gt to Fh → magnetite (Mt). The changes are rationalized using a computational model that quantitatively describes the relationship between the free energies of formation for starting Fh and nucleation barriers of competing product phases. Gt particles from the Fh-2h transformation exhibit a broader width distribution than those from Fh-12h and Fh-85C. Uncommon hexagonal Mt nanoplates are formed from the Fh-85C transformation at [Fe(II)aq]int.= 5.0 mM. The findings are crucial to comprehensively understand the environmental behavior of Fh and other associated elements.
Complexation Mechanism of Pb2+ at the Ferrihydrite-Water Interface: the Role of Al-substitution

Abstract:Ferrihydrite is a poorly crystalline iron (hydr)oxide and highly efficient adsorbent for heavy metals. Al-substitution in ferrihydrite is ubiquitous in nature. However, the effect of Al-substitution on the surface reactivity of ferrihydrite remains unclear due to its low crystallinity. The present study aims to clarify the microstructure and interfacial reaction of Al-substituted ferrihydrite. Al-substitution had little effect on the morphology and surface site density of ferrihydrite, while the presence of ≡AlOH−0.5 sites resulted in higher proton affinity and surface positive charge of ferrihydrite. Besides, the affinity constant of Pb2+ adsorption on the surface of ferrihydrite decreased at higher Al content, which further decreased the adsorption performance of ferrihydrite for Pb2+. The modeling results revealed that bidentate complex was the dominant Pb complexation species on the surface of ferrihydrite, which was less affected by Al-substitution. The present study provides important insights into the effect of Al-substitution on the interfacial reaction at the ferrihydrite-water interface. The obtained parameters may facilitate the future advance of surface complexation model.

Abstract:The dynamic interactions among iron (Fe) oxides, organic matter (OM) and heavy metals/metalloids play crucial roles in controlling the geochemical cycling of carbon (C) and heavy metals/metalloids in natural environments. Although the inhibitory effects of arsenate (As(V)) or OM on the ferrihydrite transformation process have been studied previously, there is still a lack of mechanistic and quantitative understanding on the kinetics of As(V) and C sequestration during the Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation. In this study, we employed a suite of techniques to elucidate the underlying mechanisms accounting for the temporal changes of As(V) and C distributions and speciation on Fe oxides during the Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation process. Characterizations with X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and the spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) at different times indicated that the presence of As and/or FA resulted in the formation of more lepidocrocite than goethite. Besides surface adsorption, a portion of As(V) may be incorporated into the lattice structures of newly formed crystalline Fe oxides, and the amount of As(V) sequestration within Fe oxides were correlated with the formation of crystalline Fe oxides. In comparison, FA molecules were either adsorbed on the surfaces of goethite or diffused into the defects or nano pore spaces of lepidocrocite. Our results shed the light on different nanoscale mechanisms accounting for the sequestration of C and As(V) on Fe oxides. The defects or nano pore spaces formed in the structures of lepidocrocite may provide an effective way to sequester C through physical isolation, while the crystal structures of Fe oxides may sequester As(V) through isomorphic substitution. The knowledge on the dynamic coupling between Fe oxide transformation and C/As(V) sequestration provided the basis for accurately predicting the geochemical cycling of trace elements and OM.
Cooperative Roles of Phosphate and Dissolved Organic Matter in Inhibiting Ferrihydrite Transformation and Their Distinct Fates.

Abstract:Phosphate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) mediate the crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite catalyzed by Fe(II) in subsurface environments such as soils and groundwater. However, the cooperative mechanisms underlying the mediation of phosphate and DOM in crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite and the feedback effects on their own distribution and speciation remain unresolved. In this study, solid characterization indicates that phosphate and DOM can collectively inhibit the crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite to lepidocrocite and thus goethite, via synergetic effects of inhibiting recrystallization and electron transfer. Phosphate can be retained on the surface or transformed to a nonextractable form within Fe oxyhydroxides; DOM is either released into the solution or preserved in an extractable form, while it is not incorporated or retained in the interior. Element distribution and DOM composition analysis on Fe oxyhydroxides reveals even distribution of phosphate on the newly formed Fe oxyhydroxides, while the distribution of DOM depends on its specific species. Electrochemical and dynamic force spectroscopic results provide molecular-scale thermodynamic evidence explaining the inhibition of electron transfer between Fe(II) and ferrihydrite by phosphate and DOM, thus influecing the crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite and the distribution of phosphate and DOM. This study provides new insights into the coupled biogeological cycle of Fe with phosphate and DOM in aquatic and terrestrial environments.
Ferrihydrite Transformation Impacted by Coprecipitation of Lignin: Inhibition or Facilitation?

Abstract:Lignin is a common soil organic matter that is present in soils, but its effect on the transformation of ferrihydrite (Fh) remains unclear. Organic matter is generally assumed to inhibit Fh transformation. However, lignin can reduce Fh to Fe(II), in which Fe(II)-catalyzed Fh transformation occurs. Herein, the effects of lignin on Fh transformation were investigated at 75 degrees C as a function of the lignin/Fh mass ratio (0-0.2), pH (4-8) and aging time (0-96 hr). The results of Fh-lignin samples (mass ratios = 0.1) aged at different pH values showed that for Fh-lignin the time of Fh transformation into secondary crystalline minerals was significantly shortened at pH 6 when compared with pure Fh, and the Fe(II)-accelerated transformation of Fh was strongly dependent on pH. Under pH 6, at low lignin/Fh mass ratios (0.05-0.1), the time of secondary mineral formation decreased with increasing lignin content. For high lignosulfonate-content material (lignin:Fh = 0.2), Fh did not transform into secondary minerals, indicating that lignin content plays a major role in Fh transformation. In addition, lignin affected the pathway of Fh transformation by inhibiting goethite formation and facilitating hematite formation. The effect of coprecipitation of lignin on Fh transformation should be useful in understanding the complex iron and carbon cycles in a soil environment. Abstract:The photoinduced transformation of ferrihydrite is an important process that can predict the geochemical cycle of Fe in anoxic environments as well as the fate of trace elements bonded to Fe minerals. We report that the photooxidation of sulfite by UV irradiation produces hydrated electrons (super-reductants), which significantly promote ferrihydrite reduction to Fe(II), and SO3•- (a moderate oxidant), enabling its further oxidation to more crystalline Fe(III) products. The experimental results show that the concentration of sulfite was key in influencing the rate and extent of surface-bound Fe(II) formation, which ultimately determined the distribution of individual products. For example, fitting of the Mössbauer spectroscopy data revealed that the relative abundances of mineral species after 8 h of treatment in the UV/sulfite systems were 41.9% lepidocrocite and 58.1% ferrihydrite at 2 mM SO32-; 41.8% goethite, 28.2% lepidocrocite, and 29.1% ferrihydrite at 5 mM SO32-; and 100% goethite at 10 mM SO32-. The combined results of the chemical speciation analysis and the Cd K-edge EXAFS characterization provided compelling evidence that Cd was firmly incorporated into the structure of newly formed minerals, particularly at high sulfite concentrations. These findings provide an understanding of the role of UV/sulfite in facilitating ferrihydrite transformation and promoting Cd stabilization in oxygen-deficit soils and aquatic environments.
Effect of fulvic acid co-precipitation on biosynthesis of Fe(III) hydroxysulfate and its adsorption of lead

Abstract:Iron (III) co-precipitation with dissolved organic matter (DOM) is pervasive in many natural environments. However, the effects of DOM on the formation of Fe(III) hydroxysulfate (FHS) and its environmental implications are poorly understood. In this study, fulvic acid (FA) was used as a model DOM compound, and experiments were devised to investigate the effects of FA on the formation of FHS. In addition, the Pb(II) adsorption capabilities of FHSs biosynthesized under various FA dosages, including kinetics and sorption isotherm experiments, were conducted. These experiments showed that co-precipitation of FA promoted the formation of Fe-FA composites, FA-doped schwertmannite, and small particles of jarosite. Co-precipitates are more enriched in carboxyl (-COOH) functional groups due to their preferential binding with FHS. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms and mechanisms of Pb onto the biosynthesized FHSs were then comprehensively characterized and modeled. Though the specific surface area decreased with increasing FA loading, the introduction of FA into FHSs increased Pb(II) adsorption, with the highest concentration of FA addition improving the removal capacity of Pb(II) to 91.54%. Kinetics studies and intra-particle diffusion models indicated that the adsorption of Pb(II) onto the FHSs was correlated with the number of active sites, and two adsorption steps: surface adsorption and the diffusion of Pb(II) in channels inside the biosynthesized FHSs, are suggested. The adsorption mechanism was attributed to cation exchange between Pb(II) and -OH and -COOH functional groups, and the co-precipitated FA provided additional sites for Pb(II) adsorption by FHS.

Abstract:Sulfate-reducing bacteria play an important role in the geochemistry of iron (oxyhydr)oxide and arsenic (As) in natural environments; however, the associated reaction processes are yet to be fully understood. In this study, batch experiments coupled with geochemical, spectroscopic, microscopic, and thermodynamic analyses were conducted to investigate the dynamic coupling of ferrihydrite transformation and the associated As desorption/redistribution mediated by Desulfovibrio vulgaris (D. vulgaris). The results indicated that D. vulgaris could induce ferrihydrite transformation via S2−-driven and direct reduction processes. In the absence of SO4 2−, D. vulgaris directly reduced ferrihydrite, and As desorption and re-sorption occurred simultaneously during the partial transformation of ferrihydrite to magnetite. The increase in SO4 2− loading promoted the S2−-driven reduction of ferrihydrite and accelerated the subsequent mineralogical transformation. In the low and medium SO4 2− treatments, ferrihydrite was completely transformed to a mixture of magnetite and mackinawite, which increased the fraction of As in the residual phase and stabilized As. In the high SO4 2− treatment, although the replacement of ferrihydrite by only mackinawite also increased the fraction of As in the residual phase, 22.1% of the total As was released into the solution due to the poor adsorption affinity of As to mackinawite and the conversion of As5+ to As3+. The mechanisms of ferrihydrite reduction, mineralogy transformation, and As mobilization and redistribution mediated by sulfate-reducing bacteria are closely related to the surrounding SO4 2− loadings. These results advance our understanding of the biogeochemical behavior of Fe, S, and As, and are helpful for the risk assessment and remediation of As contamination.

Iron(II)-activated Phase Transformation of Cd-bearing Ferrihydrite: Implications for Cadmium Mobility and Fate under Anaerobic Conditions.

Abstract:The factors and mechanisms affecting the fate of the associated Cd during the Fe(II)-activated Cd-bearing ferrihydrite transformation remain poorly understood. Herein we have conducted a series of batch reactions containing ferrihydrite with diverse pH values and initial Fe(II) and Cd concentrations coupled with chemical analyses and spectroscopic examination on the transformation products to probe the mechanisms of the Cd partitioning and the processes of Fe(II)-activated Cd-bearing ferrihydrite transformation under anaerobic conditions. Chemical analyses, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) results show that the initial Fe(II) and Cd concentrations as well as pH values all have significant effects on the rates and pathways of ferrihydrite transformation. Increasing Cd loading enhances the inhibition of the Fe(II)-activated ferrihydrite transformation rates. High Cd loading alters the Fe(II)-activated ferrihydrite transformation pathways by hindering the recrystallization of both ferrihydrite to more stable iron minerals and the newly formed lepidocrocite to goethite. Chemical analyses show that the release of Cd to solutions during ferrihydrite transformation is accompanied by a reduction in the 0.4 M HCl extractable Cd fraction and that a significant amount of the released Cd is transformed to a 0.4 M HCl unextractable form. Moreover, enhanced Cd release during the Fe(II)-activated ferrihydrite transformation is observed by reducing the pH value or increasing the initial Cd concentration. Results from synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) confirm that the majority of the 0.4 M HCl unextractable Cd form is associated with structural incorporation into the recrystallized iron (hydr)oxides via isomorphous substitution for Fe(III). These findings not only provide molecular-level understanding on the behavior of Cd under natural anoxic environments, but also are useful in predicting the geochemical cycling of Cd and developing long-term Cd contaminant management strategies.
Effect of Reduced Humic Acid on the Transport of Ferrihydrite Nanoparticles under Anoxic Conditions.

Abstract:Humic acid (HA) occurs ubiquitously in the subsurface environments and is well-known to play a critical role in the fate and transport of ferrihydrite nanoparticles (NPs) and NPs-associated contaminants. Under anoxic conditions, HA can readily be reduced by microorganisms or geochemical reducing species, and the mechanisms and kinetics of ferrihydrite reduction by reduced HA (HA(red)) are well-documented; however, the role of these redox reactions on the transport of ferrihydrite NPs is largely underestimated. This study provides new knowledge regarding the role of HA (both reduced HA (HA(red)) and oxidized HA (HA(OX))) of environmentally relevant concentrations (0-50 mg C/L) on the transport of ferrihydrite NPs in anoxic sand columns. Our findings show that, regardless of the redox state, the presence of a low concentration of HA (3 mg C/L) inhibited ferrihydrite NP's transport due to enhanced aggregation (and deposition) between positively charged ferrihydrite NPs and negatively charged HA molecules. In contrast, higher HA (both HA(red) and HA(OX)) concentration (>= 10 mg C/L) significantly enhanced the mobility of ferrihydrite NPs, primarily due to the enhanced electrostatic and steric stabilization originating from excessively adsorbed HA molecules. Interestingly, the transport of ferrihydrite NPs is substantially lower in the presence of HA(red) than in the presence of HA(OX). This distinct effect (HA(red) vs. HA(OX)) on the particle transport is attributed to the fact that reductive dissolution of ferrihydrite NPs occurs in the presence of HA(red) (ferrihydrite dissolves and thus total breakthrough decreases), but not in the presence of HA(OX). Furthermore, the abatement extent of ferrihydrite NPs transport triggered by the presence of HA(red) is dependent on dissolved HA(red) concentration. Taken together, our findings provide direct, and much needed insights into the distinct roles of redox state of HA on the transport of redox-sensitive metal-bearing NPs in porous media. Abstract:Immobilization and stabilization of heavy metals (HMs) in sulfidic and metallic tailings are critical to long-term pollution control and sustainable ecological rehabilitation. This study aims to unravel immobilization mechanisms of Pb (Ⅱ) in the neoformed hardpan structure resulting from Acidithiobacillus spp. accelerated bioweathering of sulfides in the presence of silicates. It was found that the bioweathered mineral composite exhibited an elevated Pb (Ⅱ) adsorption capacity compared to that of natural weathered mineral composite. A suit of microspectroscopic techniques such as synchrotron-based X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) indicated that secondary Fe-bearing minerals, functional groups, and surface properties in the neoformed hardpan were key factors contributing to Pb (Ⅱ) adsorption and immobilization in ferric-silica microstructures. The underlying mechanisms might involve surface adsorption-complexation, dissolution-precipitation, electrostatic attraction, and ion exchange. Microbial communities within the muscovite groups undergoing bioweathering processes demonstrated distinctive survival strategies and community composition under the prevailing geochemical conditions. This proof of concept regarding Pb (Ⅱ) immobilization in microbial transformed mineral composite would provide the basis for scaling up trials for developing field-feasible methodology to management HMs pollution in sulfidic and metallic tailings in near future.
