Abstract:The generalized rotating-wave approximation with counter-rotating interactions has been applied to a biased qubit-oscillator system. Analytical expressions are explicitly given for all eigenvalues and eigenstates. For a flux qubit coupled to superconducting oscillators, spectra calculated by our approach are in excellent agreement with experiment. Calculated energy levels for a variety of biases also agree well with those obtained via exact diagonalization for a wide range of coupling strengths. Dynamics of the qubit has also been examined, and results lend further support to the validity of the analytical approximation employed here. Our approach can be readily implemented and applied to superconducting qubit-oscillator experiments conducted currently and in the near future with a biased qubit and for all accessible coupling strengths.

Abstract:In this paper, the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) is employed to obtain approximate series solution of nonlinear oscillator with real order restoring force. The approximate frequency of the system obtained using HAM is compared with the exact one, and the approximate response of the system using HAM is compared with that obtained from the 4th-order Runge-Kutta Method. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed procedure are examined by several examples.

Abstract:Phase condition and amplitude condition is usually used when estimating the oscillatory condition of the sinusoidal oscillator. The selecting frequency network usually located in the amplifying circuit, or located in the positive feedback network. We change the configuration of the RC wien bridge circuit and find out that the selecting frequency network can even locate in the negative feedback network. This provides a further understanding of oscillatory condition of the circuit.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a combined technique for solving the fractional modification of the nonlinear oscillator with coordinate-dependent mass. It is an efficient method based on the fractional complex transform and the global residue harmonic balance method (called as FCT-GRHBM). The approximations and frequencies of this fractional nonlinear oscillator are given without linearization. Numerical comparisons with Runge–Kutta method are provided to confirm the efficiency of FCT-GRHBM. The sensitive analysis of the log errors and the frequencies with respect to different parameters is also investigated in detail.

Abstract:The approximate nonstationary probability density of a nonlinear single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) oscillator with time delay subject to Gaussian white noises is studied. First, the time-delayed terms are approximated by those without time delay and the original system can be rewritten as a nonlinear stochastic system without time delay. Then, the stochastic averaging method based on generalized harmonic functions is used to obtain the averaged Itô equation for amplitude of the system response and the associated Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov (FPK) equation governing the nonstationary probability density of amplitude is deduced. Finally, the approximate solution of the nonstationary probability density of amplitude is obtained by applying the Galerkin method. The approximate solution is expressed as a series expansion in terms of a set of properly selected basis functions with time-dependent coefficients. The proposed method is applied to predict the responses of a Van der Pol oscillator and a Duffing oscillator with time delay subject to Gaussian white noise. It is shown that the results obtained by the proposed procedure agree well with those obtained from Monte Carlo simulation of the original systems.

Abstract:In this paper, a new analytic expression for the frequency of vibration of a strong nonlinear polynomial-type oscillator is introduced. The method for frequency calculation is based on the transformation of the nonlinear oscillators into linear ones using the equality of their amplitudes and periods of vibration. The frequency of the linear oscillator is assumed to be the sum of frequencies corresponding to each nonlinearity in the original oscillator separately, i.e., the sum of frequencies of truly nonlinear oscillators. The obtained frequency is a complex function of amplitude, coefficient and order of nonlinearity. For simplification, the frequencies of the truly nonlinear oscillators are modified as power order functions of the exact frequency of the cubic oscillator which is linearly dependent on the amplitude of vibration. In this paper, the approximate frequency expression is developed for the harmonic any-order nonlinear oscillator and oscillators with the sum of polynomial nonlinearities. The accuracy of the obtained frequencies is tested on the examples of non-integer order nonlinear oscillators and also on a quadratic-cubic oscillator. The difference between the analytical and exact, numerically obtained results is negligible. The suggested approximate frequency expression has a simple algebraic form and is suitable for application by engineers and technicians.

Abstract:The stochastic averaging method for strongly non-linear oscillators with lightly fractional derivative damping of order α (0<α≤1) subject to bounded noise excitations is proposed by using the generalized harmonic function. The system state is approximated by a two-dimensional time-homogeneous diffusion Markov process of amplitude and phase difference using the proposed stochastic averaging method. The approximate stationary probability density of response is obtained by solving the reduced Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov (FPK) equation using the finite difference method and successive over relaxation method. A Duffing oscillator is taken as an example to show the application and validity of the method. In the case of primary resonance, the stochastic jump of the Duffing oscillator with fractional derivative damping and its P-bifurcation as the system parameters change are examined for the first time using the stationary probability density of amplitude.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an analytical approach (VIM-Padé) based on the variational iteration method (VIM), Laplace transformation and the Padé approximation. We apply this technique to solve the strongly nonlinear oscillators with cubic and harmonic restoring force. The approximated solutions to the initial value problems are provided and compared with the original variational iteration method solutions and the numerical solutions obtained by Runge-Kutta method. Numerical experiments show that the VIM-Padé technique is efficient for solving the strongly nonlinear oscillators.

Abstract:A stochastic averaging method for strongly nonlinear oscillators with lightly fractional derivative damping of order α (0< α <1) under combined harmonic and white noise external and (or) parametric excitations is proposed and then applied to study the first passage failure of Duffing oscillator with lightly fractional derivative damping of order 1/2 under combined harmonic and white noise excitations in the case of primary parametric resonance. Numerical results show that the proposed method works very well.

Abstract:The exact stationary solutions of the averaged equations of stochastically and harmonically excitedndegree-of-freedom quasi-linear systems withminternal and/or external resonances are obtained as functions of bothnindependent amplitudes andmcombinations of phase angles. To make the solutions more general, the equivalent stochastic systems of the averaged equations are obtained by using the differential forms and exterior differentiation. By considering the periodic boundary conditions with respect tomcombinations of phase angles, the probability potentials of the exact stationary solutions of the equivalent stochastic systems are expanded into anm-fold harmonic series ofmcombinations of phase angles, and the exact stationary solutions are obtained for the case where the averaged equations belong to the class of stationary potential. To examples are given to illustrate the application of the proposed procedure.

The nice reliability is shown by the result comparison with that from open literature. Abstract:Due to lack of a reasonable description for analysis of the harmonic oscillator, based on the output pattern of the ideal harmonic oscillator, a unified description model for the harmonic oscillator is proposed by using a nonlinear differential equation, the existence conditions of periodic solutions for the model are discussed, and then the existence conditions of periodic solutions for this model are given. Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the definition of Q factor for nonlinear oscillators. While available definitions of Q are often limited to linear resonators or oscillators with specific topologies, our definition is applicable to any oscillator as a figure of merit for its amplitude stability. It can be formulated rigorously and computed numerically from oscillator equations. With this definition, we calculate and analyze the Q factors of several oscillators of different types. The results confirm that the proposed Q formulation is a useful addition to the characterization techniques for oscillators.

Abstract:The frequency of a nonlinear vibration system is nonlinearly related to its amplitude, and this relationship is critical in the design of a packaging system and a microelectromechanical system (MEMS). This paper proposes a straightforward frequency prediction method for nonlinear oscillators with arbitrary initial conditions. The tangent oscillator, the hyperbolic tangent oscillator, a singular oscillator, and a MEMS oscillator are chosen to elucidate the simple solving process. The results, when compared with those obtained by the homotopy perturbation method, exhibit a good agreement. This paper introduces a very convenient procedure for attaining quick and accurate insight into the vibration property of a nonlinear vibration system.

Abstract:This paper applies He's new amplitude-frequency relationship recently established by Ji-Huan He (Int J Appl Comput Math 3 1557-1560, 2017) to study periodic solutions of strongly nonlinear systems with odd nonlinearities. Some examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness, ease and convenience of the method. In general, the results are valid for small as well as large oscillation amplitude. The method can be easily extended to other nonlinear systems with odd nonlinearities and can therefore be found widely applicable in engineering and other science. The method used in this paper can be applied directly to highly nonlinear problems without any discretization, linearization or additional requirements.

Abstract:A simple, yet accurate modified multi-scale method (MMSM) for an approximately analytical solution in nonlinear oscillators with two time scales under forced harmonic excitation is proposed. This method depends on the classical multi-scale method (MSM) and the method of variation of parameters. Assuming that the forced excitation is a constant, one could easily obtain the approximate analytical solution of the simplified system based on the traditional MSM. Then, this solution for the oscillator under forced harmonic excitation could be established after replacing the harmonic excitation by the constant excitation. To certify the correctness and precision of the proposed analytical method, the van der Pol system with two scales subject to slowly periodic excitation is investigated; this system presents rich dynamical phenomena such as spiking (SP), spiking-quiescence (SP-QS), and quiescence (QS) responses. The approximate analytical expressions of the three types of responses are given by the MMSM, and it can be found that the precision of the new analytical method is higher than that of the classical MSM and better than that of the harmonic balance method (HBM). The results obtained by the present method are considerably better than those obtained by traditional methods, quantitatively and qualitatively, particularly when the excitation frequency is far less than the natural frequency of the system.

Abstract:The high-accuracy, wide-range frequency estimation algorithm for multi-component signals presented in this paper, is based on a numerical differentiation and central Lagrange interpolation. With the sample sequences, which need at most 7 points and are sampled at a sample frequency of 25600 Hz, and computation sequences, using employed a formulation proposed in this paper, the frequencies of each component of the signal are all estimated at an accuracy of 0.001% over 1 Hz to 800 kHz with the amplitudes of each component of the signal varying from 1 V to 200 V and the phase angle of each component of the signal varying from 0° to 360°. The proposed algorithm needs at most a half cycle for the frequencies of each component of the signal under noisy or non-noisy conditions. A testing example is given to illustrate the proposed algorithm in Matlab environment.

Abstract:Deriving analytical relationship between the system parameters and amplitude of the limit cycle is a meaningful and challenging task. Currently, numerous existing analytical approximate methods struggle to achieve this goal when expressions of restoring force or nonlinear damping is complicated. To overcome this shortcoming, this study proposes a modified generalized harmonic function perturbation method. Using the proposed method, a generalized mixed Rayleigh–Liénard oscillator with cubic and quintic nonlinearities was investigated. The analytical relationships between the system parameters and amplitude of the limit cycle, as well as the expression of its characteristic quantity, were derived. By employing these analytical relationships, the existence, stability, number, position, and amplitude of each limit cycle are quantitatively analysed. The homoclinic and heteroclinic bifurcations were also predicted using the above analytical relationships. Additionally, analytical approximate solutions for this oscillator were calculated using the proposed method. All results obtained in this study were subsequently confirmed numerically to demonstrate their feasibility and validity. Consequently, the proposed method can be considered an effective supplement to perturbation-based methods. This also implies that the work presented in this paper has a certain theoretical significance and application value in the research area of quantitative analysis methods for strongly nonlinear oscillators.

Deterministic and stochastic surrogate models for a slowly driven fast oscillator

Abstract:It has long been known that the excitation of fast motion in certain two-scale dynamical systems is linked to the singularity structure in complex time of the slow variables. We demonstrate, in the context of a fast harmonic oscillator forced by one component of the Lorenz 1963 model, that this principle can be used to construct time-discrete surrogate models by numerically extracting approximate locations and residues of complex poles via Adaptive Antoulas-Andersen (AAA) rational interpolation and feeding this information into the known "connection formula" to compute the resulting fast amplitude. Despite small but nonnegligible local errors, the surrogate model maintains excellent accuracy over very long times. In addition, we observe that the long-time behavior of fast energy offers a continuous-time analog of Gottwald and Melbourne's 2004 "0-1 test for chaos" - the asymptotic growth rate of the energy in the oscillator can discern whether or not the forcing function is chaotic.
