Abstract:Improving the spatial–temporal balance of urban transportation supply and demand and alleviating traffic congestion is crucial to promoting green transportation. The travel reservation strategy (TRS) is more flexible and refined than traditional traffic demand management methods. This study investigated public preference and acceptance of the TRS in Xi'an, China. We collected public opinion survey data, including one-on-one interviews and internet questionnaires, and utilized the Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR) model to identify critical factors influencing the acceptability of the TRS. The results demonstrate that the public generally receives the TRS, with a significant proportion expressing willingness to use the service. The critical drivers that increase acceptability include alleviating traffic congestion, reductions in travel time and cost, and the perception of fairness. However, concerns were raised regarding the potential impact on travel flexibility and convenience. Residents prefer incentives such as delay insurance and public transport vouchers and are more willing to accept penalties such as deducting travel credits. Personal characteristics, such as gender, time value, and car dependence, significantly affect the acceptability of the TRS. Although the support rate for implementing the TRS during morning and evening peak hours is roughly the same, the main influencing factors differ slightly. Factors affecting morning peak hours relate to travel reliability, whereas those affecting the evening peak hour relate to travel flexibility. The opinions and suggestions about the TRS can help policymakers identify potential public concerns and take effective and proactive measures to mitigate negative impacts.
