Abstract:Good sense: A highly sensitive and selective ratiometric fluorescent probe for Fe2+ was developed by linking an Fe2+-insensitive fluorophore to an Fe2+-sensitive reporter–fluorophore fragment. The fluorescence intensity ratio increased linearly with the concentration of Fe2+ (see scheme). The probe was applied to the ratiometric imaging of intracellular and adscititious fluctuations of Fe2+ in live HL-7702 and HepG2 cells.

Abstract:A ratiometric two-photon fluorescent probe (RN3) for Pd2+ was developed based on 7-substituted coumarin and rahodamine B through FRET mechanism. The probe exhibited highly sensitive and selective ratiometric fluorescent detection signal (575 nm/515 nm) for Pd2+ in aqueous solution. The two-photon absorption cross-section of the probe under adding Pd2+ was measured as 165 GM at 760 nm. RN3 could detect Pd2+ in living cells with low cytotoxicity under two-photon excitation (lambda(ex) = 760 nm). The bio-imaging results indicated that RN3 could work in deep tissue (similar to 130 mu m) and in five-days-old zebrafish with ratiometric fluorescent signal. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Furthermore, the in situ prepared L1–Zn 2+ complex also displayed good selectivity and ratiometric response for H2PO4 and the detection limit of L1–Zn 2+ was found to be 49.0 nM. L1 exhibits permeability and can been applied to the detection of intracellular Zn and H2PO4 in HepG-2 cells.

Abstract:Two N-alkylated diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives, namely, FDPP-C8 and TDPP-C8, were prepared and applied in the ratiometric and fluorescent detection of Cu2+ in acetonitrile. The distinct optical changes of two probes were attributed to the fast radical process of diketopyrrolopyrrole triggered by Cu2+. This reaction mechanism was investigated by NMR, MS and EPR experiments and DFT theoretical calculations. The detection of Cu2+ with FDPP-C8 and TDPP-C8 were completed instantaneously, making them convenient for practical real-time operation. The limits of detection of FDPP-C8 and TDPP-C8 for Cu2+ were calculated as 65 and 127 nM, respectively. Relevant competitive ions exerted no effect. In addition, the intrinsic two-photon absorption properties of FDPP-C8 were also investigated and successfully used in the detection of Cu2+. Furthermore, given that Cu2+/Cu+-involved radical process is solvent dependent, TDPP-C8 was used to construct a INHIBIT logic gate at the molecular level with DMF and Cu2+ as inputs.

Abstract:A novel near-infrared fluorescent probe ( SWJT-13 ) for detecting Pd 2+ ions was designed and synthesized using 3-bromopropargyne group as a recognition site. SWJT-13 can detect Pd 2+ ions specifically, which can be quickly recognized by naked eye under natural light. SWJT-13 has a large stokes shift (155 nm) with LOD of 10.5 nM. The mechanism was verified by 1 H NMR, MS, and Gaussian calculations. In addition, the detection of Pd 2+ ions by the probe was studied in HeLa cells.

Abstract:A simple ratiometric sensor (L-1) for the cascade detection of Zn2+ and H2PO4- with high selectivity was reported based on the intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism. This new sensor could distinguish Zn2+ from Cd2+, and features high fluorescence quantum yield with L-1 (0.45) and L-1-Zn2+ (0.27). Abstract:According to the assumption that the formation of C–Pd bond becomes a cyclopalladated complex (CPC), we designed and synthesized two C–N–N pincer ligands of BODIPY appended 2,2′-bipyridine derivatives (BP and BPB). It has been confirmed that the C–Pd bond does exist and plays a crucial role in “on-off” fluorescence behavior. Based on it, a coordination-induced fluorescence quenching sensor for Pd2+ was constructed. The results indicated that BP possessed high sensitivity and specificity for Pd2+ in solution. The limit of detection (LOD) of BP is determined to be 0.97 nM within a linear range between 1.0 and 50.0 nM, meanwhile, the platinum-group ions demonstrate no interference. The bio-imaging application of BP was investigated and it exhibited a promising vitro test for fluorescent imaging of Pd2+ ions in MCF-7 cells. Meanwhile, BPB coated sensor label for Pd2+ was set up. The visible color variation was displayed under UV light with increasing concentrations of Pd2+. Briefly speaking, fluorescence probes of BP and BPB offer new approaches for Pd2+ detection in a lab and on-site test, as well as the vivo imaging. Then, with the aid of (TD)DFT calculation, the internal reason for the optical difference between the two ligands was disclosed. This concept of CPC containing a Pd–C covalent bond provides a promising perspective of coordination fluorescence sensors.

Abstract:We report a novel ratiometric and reversible fluorescent probe for Cd(2+) detection utilizing a 6-(dimethylamino)quinaldine derivative as the fluorophore and a 2-hydrazinopyridine derivative as Cd(2+) chelator. This ratiometric fluorescent probe possesses favorable photophysical properties. It shows a large (55 nm) red-shift from 515 nm to 570 nm in the emission spectrum. Moreover, this probe also exhibits an excellent linear relationship of fluorescence intensity ratio (F570/F515) (R(2)=0.989) vs. Cd(2+) concentration in the range of 0-10 µM at physiological pH, which can serve as a "quantitative detecting" probe for Cd(2+). Utilizing this sensitive and selective probe, we have successfully detected Cd(2+) in living cells.

Abstract:Due to the cytotoxic potential of even low doses of Pd2+, the development of its detection and detoxification strategies is highly demanding. In this paper, we developed a water-soluble fluorescent probe IMQU-8 with a new scaffold for Pd2+ sensing. IMQU-8 can detect Pd2+ with high selectivity and sensitivity and has a good detection limit of 2.5 nM under physiological conditions. Its sensing mechanism has been revealed through job plot experiments and HRMS, FT-IR, 1H NMR and DFT calculations, which demonstrated that the N atoms of the pyridyl group and imino group are crucial for Pd2+ sensing. Fluorescence lifetime assessment indicated that IMQU-8 and IMQU-8-Pd have almost identical fluorescence lifetimes, implying that IMQU-8 undergoes static quenching toward Pd2+. Additionally, IMQU-8 has been successfully applied to image Pd2+ in living cells. Since IMQU-8 and its coordinated complex IMQU-8-Pd exhibit low toxicity, IMQU-8 has been applied for the detoxification of Pd2+ in living cells.

Abstract:The frequent use of palladium in industry may lead to palladium contamination in the final pharmaceutical products, which raises health risks due to their potential toxicity. In this work, a novel near-infrared fluorescent probe NIR-Pd for the detection of palladium (II) has been developed. The probe exhibits excellent sensing properties such as rapid detection of palladium within a few minutes, selectively and sensitively detects palladium in solution. The limit of detection was calculated to be 134.6 nM. Moreover, the probe was successfully used for near-infrared fluorescence imaging of palladium in living cells. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. This review provides a brief introduction to the new methods used to determine trace amounts of Pd(2+), which then mainly focuses on the different reporting systems and unique mechanisms of the colourimetric and fluorescent probes used to detect Pd(2+), including Pd(2+) complex formation or Pd-catalysed reactions.

Abstract:A water-soluble "turn-on" fluorescent probe (RD1) for Fe(3+) based on rhodamine B was designed and synthesized. The fluorescent probe showed "turn-on" fluorescent and colorimetric responses to Fe(3+) with a high selectivity in water containing less than 1% organic cosolvent. Furthermore, bioimaging investigations indicated that the new probe was cell permeable and suitable for monitoring intracellular Fe(3+) in living cells by confocal microscopy with low cytotoxicity.

Abstract:A novel ratiometric fluorescent probe (emission shift 112 nm) BTP-Pd based on benzothiazole derivatives has been developed for the detection of Pd(0). The structure of the probe BTP-Pd was characterized by H-1/C-13 NMR spectra, high-resolution mass spectra (HRMS) and X-ray crystallography. The probe BTP-Pd displays rapid fluorescence response (about 10 min) and low saturation concentration (about 4 mu M) toward Pd(0). Moreover, the probe BTP-Pd can be used to discriminate Pd(0) and Pd2+. Therefore, it would provide an approach for detecting not only Pd(0), but also Pd2+ through reductant reduction in environment system.

Abstract:Palladium(0) as one of the vital transition metals, is employed in numerous industries, such as drug synthesis, aerospace high-tech field and automobile industry. When the Pd(0) enter into the body, it will bind with thiol-containing amino acids, DNA, RNA, and other biomolecules damaging to human health. Thus, developing a novel tool for monitoring and imaging of Pd(0) in vivo is very urgent. In the work, based on a intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism a two-photon fluorescent probe NIPd had been designed and synthesized for the recognition Pd(0). In vitro experiments data displayed that probe NIPd exhibited a 13-fold fluorescent increase for Pd(0) in 30 min in the aqueous solution with a detection limit of 16 nmol/L. It also showed the outstanding selectivity and antijamming performance. More importantly, NIPd could be served as a two-photon fluorescent probe for real-time monitoring Pd(0) in living cells and mice.

Abstract:A novel colorimetric and fluorescent probe (NAP-PMA) has been constructed through appending 2-pyridinemethanamine to naphthalimide. The air and moisture stable fluorophore were adopted as a colorimetric and fluorescent probe for palladium cation in organic solvent, revealing simultaneously good selectivity, high sensitivity and low detection limit (22.5 nM). Moreover, NAP-PMA not only exhibited a visible naked-eye color change from yellowish green to pink, but also displayed specific selectivity for the recognition of palladium acetate. The fluorescence sensing and 1H NMR titration experiments demonstrated that the proposed mechanism of the sensing process is the formation of a novel palladium complex system by the introduction of Pd2+. In addition, NAP-PMA could be used as paper strips to quantitatively detect Pd2+ in water. Furthermore, the developed sensing platform NAP-PMA-Pd is capable of detecting CO in living cells by “turn on” mode with high selectivity and stability, providing a potential real-time monitor for CO-involved reactions in biological systems.

Abstract:The wide use of palladium species may cause palladium pollution in medicine, food and water, which raises rislcs on environment and health due to the latent hazard of palladium species. In this work, two BODIPY-based fluorescent probes (BDP-COOen and BDP-COOyn) for the detection of palladium have been developed. Both probes displayed strong AIE fluorescence and exhibited selective response to Pd-0 in aqueous buffer. Notably, BDP-COOen showed a favorable two-channel responsive manner as well as preferred reaction kinetics (< 6 min). Furthermore, the probe BDP-COOen was successfully applied for two channel fluorescence imaging of intracellular Pd-0.

Abstract:Ratiometric fluorescent probes based on FRET mechanism have attracted great attention due to their large pseudo-Stokes shifts and built-in correction for environmental effects. However, most donors failed to meet the requirement that the emission of the donor must overlap well with the absorption of the acceptor. Therefore, searching for new fluorophore to construct FRET system is in great need. In this paper, a new fluorescent dye pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine was synthesized and used as a donor in the FRET system for ratiometric sensing of Cu2+. The probe is based on FRET and PET mechanism. It shows high selectivity and sensitivity toward Cu2+ (detection limit 30 nM). Furthermore, it was successfully used to detect Cu2+ in Glioma cells.

Abstract:A simple and sensitive fluorimetric method has been developed for the determination of trace palladium with N-(1-naphthyl)ethylene diamine(NPED) as a fluorescence reagent.The method is based on the complex formation between Pd(Ⅱ) and NPED at pH 4.0 with fluorescence quenching of NPED.The calibration curve is linear over the Pd(Ⅱ) concentration range of 5.0×10~(-7)～6.0×10~(-6)?mol/L,with a detection limit of 3.8×10~(-7)?mol/L.Platinum(Ⅳ) and other diverse metal ions do not disturb with Pd(Ⅱ) determination.The proposed method has been applied to the determination of Pd(Ⅱ) in palladium-containing catalysts and water samples with satisfactory results.
