Abstract:To achieve high accuracy, conventional time integration methods require small time steps, especially when applied to large-scale finite element systems. The use of small time steps calls for a large number of computations. In this paper, a strategy is proposed to construct an efficient and highly precise time integration method for linear time-invariant systems. Adopting the multi-substep notion, the highly precise time integration method creates an integrated amplification matrix prior to recursive calculations by multiplying the amplification matrices of N equal substeps, where a 2(m) algorithm and the method of storing incremental matrix are respectively employed to reduce computational cost and rounding error. On the basis of the Newmark method, two highly precise symplectic schemes and one highly precise dissipative scheme are developed. In addition, the consistent stability of the used Newmark schemes is presented. The free vibration of a three-dimensional truss, the impact of a particle against a rod, and the forced vibrations of a rectangular thin plate and a stiff system are investigated to validate the performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:A comprehensive survey of time integration methods in structural dynamics analysis is given. The basic principle of those time integration schemes and the properties of several representative time integration methods in structural dynamic analysis are discussed. According to the principle, the time integration methods are classified in four groups in this paper. Group Ⅰ: finite difference expression, Group Ⅱ: linear acceleration assumption, Group Ⅲ: order reduction by matrix transformation and Group Ⅳ: series expansion. Several new time integration methods are discussed with their respective principles. Numerical solution methods presented here will be of use to engineers working in the area of dynamics of structures.
An efficient time-integration method for nonlinear dynamic analysis of solids and structures

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient time-integration method for obtaining reliable solutions to the second-order nonlinear dynamic problems in structural engineering. This method employs both the backward-acceleration differentiation formula and the trapezoidal rule, resulting in a self-starting, single step, second-order accurate algorithm. With the same computational effort as the trapezoidal rule, the proposed method remains stable in large deformation and long time range solutions even when the trapezoidal rule fails. Meanwhile, the proposed method has the following characteristics: (1) it is applicable to linear as well as general nonlinear analyses; (2) it does not involve additional variables (e.g. Lagrange multipliers) and artificial parameters; (3) it is a single-solver algorithm at the discrete time points with symmetric effective stiffness matrix and effective load vectors; and (4) it is easy to implement in an existing computational software. Some numerical results indicate that the proposed method is a powerful tool with some notable features for practical nonlinear dynamic analyses.

Abstract:All step-by-step integration methods available at present for structural dynamic analysis use the displacement, velocity, and acceleration vectors computed at a previous interval for evaluating those at an advanced time step. Hence, an accumulated error will be definitely introduced after such integration. This paper presents a novel time-domain-advance integration method for transient elastodynamic problems in which the exact initial conditions are strictly satisfied for the solutions for each time step. In this way, the accumulated error can be eliminated and the approximate solutions will converge to the exact ones uniformly on the whole time domain. Therefore, the new method is more accurate. When applying to a structural dynamic problem, the present mehtod does not have to use the initial acceleration as is required by most other algorithms and the corresponding computation can be avoided. The present method is simple in representation, easy to be programmed, and especially suitable for accurate analyses of long-time problems. The comparison of numerical results with exact ones shows that the present method is much more accurate than some most widely used algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel sub-step composite implicit time integration scheme is presented for solving the problems in structural dynamics. The proposed scheme possesses desirable stability and accuracy. With appropriate algorithmic parameter value, the scheme can attain controllable amplitude decay and period elongation. Effectiveness of the proposed scheme is tested in some example solutions by comparing with other well-known implicit schemes. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme possesses high computation efficiency as well as desirable numerical dissipation characteristics.

Abstract:A two-step self-starting algorithm for solving structural dynamic problems called CombinationDifference Time-Integration algorithm(CDTI for short)which combines the backward difference scheme of velocity with the central difference scheme of displacement and acceleration based on Taylor series expansion is proposed.The stability and accuracy of CDTI are thoroughly analyzed by the amplification matrix and the associated eigenvalues and the results indicated that although it is conditionally stable,CDTI has high-order accuracy with no amplitude decay as well as little period elongation rate.The high accuracy of CDTI was also validated by numerical analysis.

Abstract:This paper presents a new robust and efficient time integration algorithm suitable for various complex nonlinear structural dynamic finite element problems. Based on the idea of composition, the three-point backward difference formula and a generalized central difference formula are combined to constitute the implicit algorithm. Theoretical analysis indicates that the composite algorithm is a single-solver algorithm with satisfactory accuracy, unconditional stability, and second-order convergence rate. Moreover, without any additional parameters, the composite algorithm maintains a symmetric effective stiffness matrix and the computational cost is the same as that of the trapezoidal rule. And more merits of the proposed algorithm are revealed through several representative finite element examples by comparing with analytical solutions or solutions provided by other numerical techniques. Results show that not only the linear stiff problem but also the nonlinear problems involving nonlinearities of geometry, contact, and material can be solved efficiently and successfully by this composite algorithm. Thus the prospect of its implementation in existing finite element codes can be foreseen.

Abstract:In this study, a novel single-step explicit time integration method based on momentum corrector technique is proposed. The algorithmic procedure is formulated using cubic B-spline interpolation and Taylor series expansion. The momentum corrector is introduced to enhance solution accuracy of problems, especially for discontinuous load problems. Through the theoretical analysis of local truncation errors, spectral radius, algorithmic damping and period elongation, several parameter cases are obtained to achieve enhanced accuracy and stability. Numerical examples, including a standard single-degree-of-freedom problem, two discontinuous load problems, a seismic response analysis problem, a wave propagation problem and a nonlinear problem, are tested. The results illustrate the new method achieves high level of accuracy for discontinuous load problems, while simultaneously exhibiting significant accuracy improvement when dealing with other problems.

Abstract:SummaryA comprehensive study of the two sub‐steps composite implicit time integration scheme for the structural dynamics is presented in this paper. A framework is proposed for the convergence accuracy analysis of the generalized composite scheme. The local truncation errors of the acceleration, velocity, and displacement are evaluated in a rigorous procedure. The presented and proved accuracy condition enables the displacement, velocity, and acceleration achieving second‐order accuracy simultaneously, which avoids the drawback that the acceleration accuracy may not reach second order. The different influences of numerical frequencies and time step on the accuracy of displacement, velocity, and acceleration are clarified. The numerical dissipation and dispersion and the initial magnitude errors are investigated physically, which measure the errors from the algorithmic amplification matrix's eigenvalues and eigenvectors, respectively. The load and physically undamped/damped cases are naturally accounted. An optimal algorithm‐Bathe composite method (Bathe and Baig, 2005; Bathe, 2007; Bathe and Noh, 2012) is revealed with unconditional stability, no overshooting in displacement, velocity, and acceleration, and excellent performance compared with many other algorithms. The proposed framework also can be used for accuracy analysis and design of other multi‐sub‐steps composite schemes and single‐step methods under physical damping and/or loading. Two Precise Time-Integration Methods for Structural Dynamic Analysis

Abstract:Similarities and differences in solving dynamic equations between precise time-integration method with augmented matrix (PTI-AM) and extended precise time-integration method (EPTI) were analyzed. The explicit, discrete and recursive expressions for both methods were deduced, respectively, with the evolutionary random excitations in a general combined form of polynomial, exponential, and sinusoid/cosine functions. Both recursive expressions can be transformed into polynomial functions corresponding to the integral steps. With the same number of terms in the Taylor series, the recursive expression for EPTI contains additional high-order terms besides all the terms in PTI-AM. Therefore, EPTI has higher precision than PTI-AM does. If those additional high-order terms are neglected, the two methods have an identical discrete and recursive expression. In this respect, the two methods are essentially the same despite of different programming realization. An engineering example was presented, showing that the computing precision of both methods was as high as 10-significant-figures, and the computing time of EPTI was over 1 order of magnitude less than that of PTI-AM.

Abstract:In thermo-mechanical problems, traditional thermal stresses analyses usually consider thermal load as static load or quasi-static load and so the temperature field and the stresses field is uncoupled. When thermal shock is applied on structures, these analyses can cause large error and even lead to disaster. Based on the precise time-integration method, formulations about thermo-mechanical coupled problem in plates were deduced. The heat conduction equations were coupled with the structural deformations by expanding structural deformation into heat conduction equations. The coupled dynamic thermo-mechanical equations are gotten by finite element method. The non-homogeneous vector is viewed as the variables of the equations and the original equations are converted into homogeneous equations by using the dimensional expanding. The quasi-static equations also are treated in the same way. This new algorithm not only benefits to the programming implementation and the numerical stability, but also is more efficient to large-scale problem. The thermal dynamic responses of plates that huge heat flux is applied on its boundary are analyzed. The results of numerical examples agree well with the results of references.

Abstract:This paper presents a step-by-step time integration method for transient solutions of nonlinear structural dynamic problems. Taking the second-order nonlinear dynamic equations as the model problem, this self-starting one-step algorithm is constructed using the Galerkin finite element method (FEM) and Newton–Raphson iteration, in which it is recommended to adopt time elements of degree m = 1,2,3. Based on the mathematical and numerical analysis, it is found that the method can gain a convergence order of 2m for both displacement and velocity results when an ordinary Gauss integral is implemented. Meanwhile, with reduced Gauss integration, the method achieves unconditional stability. Furthermore, a feasible integration scheme with controllable numerical damping has been established by modifying the test function and introducing a special integral rule. Representative numerical examples show that the proposed method performs well in stability with controllable numerical dissipation, and its computational efficiency is superior as well.

Abstract:The existing three-parameter single-step time integration methods, such as the Generalized-\(\alpha \) method, improve numerical dissipation by modifying equilibrium equation at time points, which cause them to lose accuracy due to the interpolation of load vectors. Moreover, these three-parameter methods do not present an available formulation applied to a general second-order nonlinear differential equation. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an innovative three-parameter single-step method by introducing an additional variable into update equations. Although the present method is spectrally identical to the Generalized-\(\alpha \) method for undamped systems, it possesses higher accuracy since it strictly satisfies the equilibrium equation at time points, and can be readily used to solve nonlinear equations. By the analysis of accuracy, stability, numerical dissipation and dispersion, the optimal second-order implicit and explicit schemes are generated, which can maximize low-frequency accuracy when high-frequency dissipation is specified. To check the performance of the proposed method, several numerical experiments are conducted and the proposed method is compared with a few up-to-date methods.
Two Novel Explicit Time Integration Methods Based on Displacement-Velocity Relations for Structural Dynamics

Abstract:Two novel explicit time integration methods are proposed based on displacement-velocity relations in this paper for structural dynamics. They avoid the factorization of damping and stiffness matrices, and are truly self-starting due to the exclusion of acceleration vectors. The first method employs the motion equation of expanded form and a linear relation of the displacement and velocity vectors. The recommended parameters, derived from linear analysis, enable the method to possess first-order accuracy mostly and second-order accuracy in the absence of numerical and physical damping. The second method adopts the idea of composite methods, and employs two motion equations of different expanded forms per step. Theoretical analysis indicates that this method can achieve a maximum stability limit of 4, and provides a single-parameter optimal scheme, controlled by the degree of numerical dissipation, for this method. The resulting scheme is second-order accurate with the stability limit ranged from 3.5708 to 4 for the undamped case, and some numerical experiments show that it has better numerical performance compared with some up-to-date explicit methods. Abstract:In this study, an improved explicit time integration method based on quartic B-spline interpolation is generalized for linear and nonlinear dynamics. The accuracy order of the proposed method is analytically obtained as well as its spectral radius, period elongation, and algorithmic damping. The analysis shows the proposed method achieves third-order and at least second-order accuracy for displacement and velocity, respectively. With one algorithmic parameter, the proposed method can adjust numerical dissipation and accuracy. Linear dynamic examples demonstrate that the effectiveness of the proposed method as well as its high-order accuracy. Nonlinear dynamic problems show the proposed method can provide desirable solutions. Numerical results demonstrate the proposed method can provide more stable and accurate solutions than other classical explicit methods.

Abstract:This paper develops a family of optimized [Formula: see text]-sub-step time integration methods for structural dynamics, in which the generalized trapezoidal rule is used in the first [Formula: see text] sub-steps, and the last sub-step employs [Formula: see text]-point backward difference formula. The proposed methods can achieve second-order accuracy and unconditional stability, and their degree of numerical dissipation can range from zero to one. Also, the proposed methods can achieve the identical effective stiffness matrices for all sub-steps, reducing computational costs in the analysis of linear systems. Using the spectral analysis, optimized algorithmic parameters are presented, ensuring that the proposed methods can accurately calculate different types of dynamic problems such as wave propagation, stiff and nonlinear systems. Besides, with the increase in the number of sub-steps, the accuracy of the proposed methods can be enhanced without extra workload compared with single-step methods. Numerical experiments show that the proposed methods perform better in different dynamic systems.

Abstract:The structural dynamics equations were converted to the state equations in which the displacement and velocity response were taken as the state variables.In order to solve the state equations,the perturbation method was used,and a new series form of analytical solutions was presented.At the same time,the corresponding iterated computation formats and steps for the dynamics equations were established.The algorithm needs only repetitious matrix-vector multiplication and vector summation without inversion of H matrix and calculation of exponential matrix e H.Thusly,the computation stability and efficiency are very high.The items of the series solution and the accuracy of the algorithm can be directly controlled by the tolerance parameter,and theoretically,the algorithm can easily achieve arbitrary-order accuracy,and be suitable for parallel computing and compression storage.Generally,the algorithm combines the high-efficiency of the linear acceleration methods and the high-precision of precise integration methods.This method can be used for calculating the large sparse linear dynamic equations of engineering structures.At last,a model numerical example was given to demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the method.

Abstract:An accurate and efficient method is presented for analyzing the dynamic response of two-dimensional periodic structures. The algebraic structure of the corresponding matrix exponential is analyzed and, based on its special structure, an accurate and efficient method for its computation is proposed. Accuracy is maintained by utilizing the precise integration method, while great efficiency is achieved in the computational effort by using the periodic property of the structure and the energy propagation feature of the dynamic system. The proposed method is compared to the conventional Newmark and R-K methods and shown to be accurate, efficient and extremely frugal in its memory requirements.
