Abstract:The wide application of mobile terminals has given rise to a large number of trajectory data. These data record spatio-temporal mobility of mobile objects and have important value for urban planning, traffic congestion detection, and other applications. In view of the important reference value of the trajectory data for commercial location selection, this paper proposes the search model of the region with the maximum coverage value based on trajectory data, which aims to maximize the sum of weights of sampling points covered by circular regions. The model considers the difference between the sampling points of different users and the interaction between the sampling points of the same user so as to adapt to different application scenarios such as location selection of signal stations and location selection of shopping malls. In order to further improve computing performance, this paper proposes two distributed schemes for this model. Finally, the extensive experiments on three real data sets demonstrated that the distributed schemes outperformed the centralized scheme and the application scenarios of the two schemes are summarized based on the experimental results.

Abstract:Geographic profiling uses locations of series crimes to detect the most probable residence of the offender. However, because of shortage of other information, the method doesn't perform well. To Solve this problem, the concept of geographic profiling was extended and a concept of human geographic profiling (HGP) was put forward to take offender's bias, victims' characteristics, and geographical circumstances into account. The physical geographic profiling (PGP) was obtained by combining an improved "spatial mean" method and an improved criminal geographic targeting (CGT) model by using a precisely deduced "Combination Function". Afterwards, HGP and PCG were combined by the same function. The resultant product was a three-dimentional probability map. Simulation result indicated high accuracy rates among which the lowest is 66% under an ideal situation. The introduction of HGP and deduction of combination function are discussed originally and are of great importance in this paper.

Abstract:By considering the influencing factors such as time and distance, crime rate, population, police,geography and environment, victims' occupation, etc, the authors use mathematical modeling to establish the evaluation function of crime probability in the research area, calculate the probability of crime, and then combine it with GIS-related technology to get the most likely crime areas, namely, the geographic portrait of crime. The authors conduct method validation and analysis through examples. This new probabilistic crime model could provide geospatial data for detecting serial criminal cases and narrow down the scope of police surveillance. This new investigative technique with high precision is suitable for various geographic regions and helpful for detecting serial criminal cases.

Abstract:With the purpose of discovering the geographical topics from GPS-associated images,a novel geographical topic model,which is called Author-related Geographical Topic Model(AGTM),is proposed and implemented.AGTM increases the accuracy of geographical topic by introducing author information and their relationships into the traditional modeling process.It assumes that if two authors are friends their documents will have a greater probability of being clustered into the same topic.Under this assumption,AGTM divided authors into several social groups,while social groups are assigned to certain geographic regions under some probability distributions.Experiments performed on a dataset of Flickr images with GPS coordinates and other attributes indicate that our approach achieves a better accuracy and interpretability for modeling geographical topic.

Abstract:The possibility of moving objects accessing different types of points of interest (POIs) at specific times is not always the same, so quantitative time geography research needs to consider the actual POI semantic information, including POI attributes and time information. Existing methods allocate probabilities to position points, including POIs, based on space–time position information, but ignore the semantic information of POIs. The accessing activities of moving objects in different POIs usually have obvious time characteristics, such as dinner usually taking place around 6 PM. In this paper, building upon existing probabilistic time geographic methods, we introduce POI attributes and their time preferences to propose a probabilistic time geographic model for assigning probabilities to POI accesses. This model provides a comprehensive measure of position probability with space–time uncertainty between known trajectory points, incorporating time, space, and semantic information, thereby avoiding data gaps caused by single-dimensional information. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Entropy maximization approach has been widely used in transportation planning. It provides theoretical basis for a class of forecast models on traffic demand. In this paper, the concept of entropy from information theory is borrowed to describe inhabitant trip distribution and then a trip distribution model is presented under constraints of typical characteristics based on origin moments. The model is characteristic of generality. The concrete form of the model depends on the order of the highest origin moment which has a great impact on the precision of the model and the labor of parameters calibration. The paper expatiates on this situation and puts forward an iteration method to ascertain the parameters in the model. And then, an entropy method is given to compare the difference of the models for selection. The application of the models and the methods is illustrated via 2001 trip data from the city of Changchun, China.

Abstract:Relationship between jobs-housing spatial distribution and travel to work were studied from a microscopic perspective.Based on random utility maximization theory,factors depicting the individual and socio-economic characteristics and attribute of travel and land use are defined as exogenous variables,meanwhile,the model choice sets are the combination of residential location choice and commute mode choice subsets.Discrete choice model specified as Network Generalised Extreme Value(NetworkGEV) is employed to investigate the joint decisions of where to live and how to get to workplace which attempts to describe the change of aggravated traffic congestion and discover the potential change caused by residential relocation and travel mode shift under different employment location patterns.This model is estimated in Biogeme,and the direct and cross elasticities are calculated to analyze the change of alternatives probability brought by factors variation.The results reveal that the model yields plausible estimation of exogenous variables in the joint residential location and travel mode choice context.Compared with suburban commuters,commuters in CBD are more sensitive to the increase of travel time and intend to change travel mode and residential location thus trading off the disutility of traffic congestion.
Probability issues in locality descriptions based on Voronoi neighbor relationship

Abstract:Spatial relationships play an important role in spatial knowledge representation, such as in describing localities. However, little attention has been paid to how to describe the position of a target object (TO) with a qualitative referencing system that consists of a set of reference objects (ROs) in the locality description context. We propose a method that accounts for the differences between two scenarios in locality descriptions. This method is probabilistic and is based on the Voronoi neighbor relationship to determine candidate ROs for describing a given TO's position in the second scenario. The Voronoi neighbor relationship is adopted to determine candidate ROs of a TO and to compute the neighboring area of an RO. A probability function is presented to model the uncertainty of selecting appropriate ROs. To build locality descriptions that are consistent with commonsense, four constraints are placed on the probability function. Two probability functions based on Euclidean distance and stolen-area, and a mixed probability function that considers both Euclidean distance and stolen-area, are analyzed and compared. With the mixed probability function, we establish a method to construct the locality description of a given TO. Finally, three examples demonstrate how to select ROs to describe a TO's position. A Multi-Granularity Perspective for Spatial Profiling of Mobile Apps.

Abstract:The prevalence of mobile apps has greatly changed people’s lives, generating myriads of data and creating new research opportunities. By exploiting mobile apps’ data, existing studies have primarily investigated app users’ usage patterns. Few studies have focused on profiling the geospatial distributions of individual apps’ usage patterns on a large scale. A major challenge for profiling app usage is the heterogeneity and sparsity of individual apps’ data. In this study, we propose a multi-level mixture of kernel density estimation (mlKDE) model for robust profiling of the geospatial distribution of any given app. A major advantage of this model is that it can leverage aggregate information from groups of related apps, and adaptively train the weights for different groups. Using a real-world, large-scale app usage dataset covering more than one thousand apps available on the market, we demonstrate that our model can effectively characterize the distributions of app usage in the real world, and has considerable advantages when compared to the baseline models reported in the literature.
Analyses of location-price game on networks with stochastic customer behavior and its heuristic algorithm

Abstract:In this paper, a two-stage model is developed to investigate the location strategy and the commodity pricing strategy for a retail firm that wants to enter a spatial market with multiple competitive facilities, where a competitor firm is already operating as a monopoly with several outlets. Expected market shares are calculated based on the stochastic customer behavior on networks. The authors provide a sufficient condition for the existence of equilibrium prices in the price game for the first time. The existence and uniqueness of the pure strategy Nash equilibrium price with a specified utility function are proved in the subgame. A metaheuristic based on tabu search is proposed to search the optimal location-price solution of the model. In addition, the authors provide two numerical examples to illustrate how to obtain the optimal solution and conduct sensitivity analysis. The analysis shows that the best location decision is robust for the follower firm, price game is more intense when incomes of consumers are lower or there are more substitution products, and neither chain retail gains from the price competition.

Simplicity, Complexity, and Mathematical Modeling of Geographical Distributions

Abstract:Because of quantitative revolution, geography evolved from a discipline of spatial description into a science of distributions. Accordingly, qualitative methods were replaced by the integrated methods of quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. One of the important approaches to spatial analysis is to characterize geographical distributions. Geographical distributions fall into spatial distributions and size distributions, both of which can be divided into simple distributions and complex distributions. A simple distribution has a characteristic scale(represented by a characteristic length), while a complex distribution has no characteristic scale but bears a property of scaling invariance(represented by a scaling exponent). The key step of studying a simple distribution is to find its characteristic scale, while the basic way of research for a complex distribution is to make a scaling analysis. For simple distributions, traditional methods based on advanced mathematics are effective, but for complex distributions, the old- fashioned mathematical tools are ineffective.However, due to the lack of understanding of characteristic scale and scaling, geographers often failed to distinguish between simple distributions and complex distributions. As a result, many complex systems such as cities and systems of cities were mistaken for simple systems. Consequently, geography did not succeed in theorization in the 1960s- 1970 s after quantification in the 1950s- 1960 s. Geographical distributions can be mathematically abstracted as probability distributions. For a simple distribution, its characteristic scale can be determined. A typical characteristic scale is a mean(average value). Based on means, we can compute a variance and a covariance. Thus we have a clear probability structure comprising means, variances, and covariances,which explain the pattern of the geographical system and predict its process of evolution. In the case of a complex distribution, an effective mean cannot be determined, and thus little is known about its probability structure. In this situation, characteristic scale analysis should be substituted with scaling analysis. Quantitative methods of scaling analysis have emerged from interdisciplinary studies. A new integrated theory based on concepts from fractals, allometry, and complex network has been developing for geographical modeling and analysis.
Characterizing Spatial Patterns of Base Stations in Cellular Networks

Abstract:The topology of base stations (BSs) in cellular networks, serving as a basis of networking performance analysis, is considered to be obviously distinctive with the traditional hexagonal grid or square lattice model, thus stimulating a fundamental rethinking. Recently, stochastic geometry based models, especially the Poisson point process (PPP), have been attracting an ever-increasing popularity in modeling BS deployment of cellular networks due to its merits of tractability and capability for capturing non-uniformity. In this study, a detailed comparison between common stochastic models and real BS locations is performed. Results indicate that the PPP fails to precisely characterize either urban or rural BS deployment. Furthermore, the topology of real data in both regions are examined and distinguished by statistical methods according to the point interaction trends they exhibit. By comparing the corresponding real data with aggregative point process models as well as repulsive point process models, we verify that the capacity-centric BS deployment in urban areas can be modeled by typical aggregative processes such as the Matern cluster process, while the coverage-centric BS deployment in rural areas can be modeled by representative repulsive processes such as the Strauss hard-core process.
Spatial Statistical Modeling for Heterogeneous Cellular Networks - An Empirical Study

Abstract:Modeling the spatial distribution of multi-tier base stations (BSs) is an important issue for understanding and validating the analysis and design of heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs). In this paper, we use different spatial statistical models to describe the spatial distribution of BSs, by fitting real data sets of BS locations in HCNs. Classical statistics like the L function, and cellular network performance metrics like the coverage probability are used to evaluate the goodness-of-fit. The results reveal that notable distinctions exist between modeling HCNs and single-tier networks. Although each tier in a HCN may be most accurately fitted by statistical models other than the Poisson spatial distribution, it is surprising that multiple tiers of independent Poisson spatial distributions provide an accurate description of the overall HCN. The impacts of different network parameters and the dependency between tiers on the modeling accuracy are extensively investigated.
Modeling and Analysis of GEO Satellite Networks

Abstract:The extensive coverage offered by satellites makes them effective in enhancing service continuity for users on dynamic airborne and maritime platforms, such as airplanes and ships. In particular, geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) satellites ensure stable connectivity for terrestrial users due to their stationary characteristics when observed from Earth. This paper introduces a novel approach to model and analyze GEO satellite networks using stochastic geometry. We model the distribution of GEO satellites in the geostationary orbit according to a binomial point process (BPP) and examine satellite visibility depending on the terminal's latitude. Then, we identify potential distribution cases for GEO satellites and derive case probabilities based on the properties of the BPP. We also obtain the distance distributions between the terminal and GEO satellites and derive the coverage probability of the network. We further approximate the derived expressions using the Poisson limit theorem. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to validate the analytical findings, demonstrating a strong alignment between the analyses and simulations. The simplified analytical results can be used to estimate the coverage performance of GEO satellite networks by effectively modeling the positions of GEO satellites.

Positioning Localities from Spatial Assertions Based on Voronoi Neighboring

Abstract:With the rapid development of Internet, much spatial information contained in non-structured or semi-structured documents is available on the World Wide Web. In such documents, localities are always textually described using spatial relationships and named places, instead of numerical coordinates. Hence, extracting positional information from locality descriptions is an important task. In this paper, we bridge two aspects of locality descriptions, namely generating locality descriptions and positioning localities, and provide a method to compute probability density according to the selection probability of a reference object to describe the position of the target object. Refinement operation on uncertainty field is used to deal with locality description involving multiple reference objects. Three metrics are introduced to measure the results of positioning localities. We choose the mixed selection probability function based on Euclidean distance and Voronoi stolen-area to compute probability density function. Finally, we use three cases to demonstrate the proposed methods.
An Approach for Spatial-temporal Traffic Modeling in Mobile Cellular Networks

Abstract:The volume and types of traffic data in mobile cellular networks have been increasing continuously. Meanwhile, traffic data change dynamically in several dimensions such as time and space. Thus, traffic modeling is essential for theoretical analysis and energy efficient design of future ultra-dense cellular networks. In this paper, the authors try to build a tractable and accurate model to describe the traffic variation pattern for a single base station in real cellular networks. Firstly a sinusoid superposition model is proposed for describing the temporal traffic variation of multiple base stations based on real data in a current cellular network. It shows that the mean traffic volume of many base stations in an area changes periodically and has three main frequency components. Then, lognormal distribution is verified for spatial modeling of real traffic data. The spatial traffic distributions at both spare time and busy time are analyzed. Moreover, the parameters of the model are presented in three typical regions: park, campus and central business district. Finally, an approach for combined spatial-temporal traffic modeling of single base station is proposed based on the temporal and spatial traffic distribution of multiple base stations. All the three models are evaluated through comparison with real data in current cellular networks. The results show that these models can accurately describe the variation pattern of real traffic data in cellular networks.

Abstract:This paper constructs a social knowledge/genetic algorithm model based on a mathematical approach that always relates the behavior time, behavior distance, and geo-data acquisition quality of all mobility patterns to the overall geographic knowledge evolution process. In order to address the existence of multiple interactions in complex data systems in the social computing domain, such as transportation networks (mountain, geography, and accessibility) under different geo-constraints, including interaction and survival needs in socio-ecological networks, including agro-genetic, demographic, and economic interaction networks, we realize how to find the peaks in the data network, i.e., the few “nuclei” with high connectivity, in the data organization process. The model can be used to identify the nuclei of high connectivity in the data network, and the key role of the nuclei in the effective derivation of social computing, and to algorithmically describe the above behavior. The model can be used both to discover the causes of in situ behavior at the macro level and to provide new solutions for modeling coupled object-event-process data in complex social computing.

Abstract:The Z-number is the most general representation of real-life information with reliability, and it also exhibits the highest descriptive power from the perspective of human cognition. This study focuses on the development of a computationally simple and effective Z-number model to address game problems by systematically comparing pairwise strategies derived from different players. The processing of Z-numbers requires computing fuzzy and probabilistic uncertainties; then, the cloud model is suggested to handle bimodal restriction in Z-numbers. In this manner, a novel concept of asymmetric normal Z-value (ANZ) is proposed. Subsequently, the concordance/discordance index and outranking relations of ANZs are suggested based on classic outranking rules. Next, an innovative game model is established by modeling the outranking relations of strategies of different players under multiple criteria. Finally, an illustrative example concerning enterprise market competition is provided to demonstrate the established model.

Abstract:In privacy protection methods based on location services, constructing anonymous areas using location information shared by collaborative users is the main method. However, this collaborative process not only increases the risk of mobile users' location privacy being leaked, but also reduces positioning accuracy. In response to this problem, we propose a balancing strategy, which transforms the problem of protecting mobile users' location privacy and improving positioning accuracy into a balance issue between location privacy and positioning accuracy. The cooperation of mobile users with different collaborating users is then modeled as an objective optimization problem, and location privacy and positioning accuracy are evaluated separately to make different selection strategies. Finally, an optimization function is constructed to select the optimal selection strategies. Experimental results show that our proposed strategy can effectively achieve the balance between location privacy and positioning accuracy.
