The Reshaping of Social Relations: Resettled Rural Residents in Zhenjiang, China

Abstract:Under the banner of integrated urban-rural development in China, increasingly more rural population is being concentrated into large, new residential areas. For resettled residents, the rural-urban transition is rapid and affects multiple facets of their lives. This paper explores the effects of the transition on residents' social relations, drawing on the experience of resettled villagers in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province. It addresses three research questions. First, how are such effects manifested in residents' social interactions and sources of social support? Second, how are these effects vary by socioeconomic attributes of residents? Third, in what ways have residents deployed the spaces of social interaction to enhance their own wellbeing? We show that for resettled rural residents, both the scope and composition of social relations have widened. In particular, those with higher income, increased household assets, or workplace located within the neighborhood are experiencing larger scope of social relations and more diverse subjects of interaction. Our analysis also points to less desirable consequences, as reflected in limited social engagement by residents with fewer financial resources and employment options.
Rural Land Transfer and Urban Settlement Intentions of Rural Migrants: Evidence from a Rural Land System Reform in China

Abstract:Using data from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey, this paper provides new evidence on the impact of rural land transfer on urban settlement intentions of rural migrants. There was a rural land system reform in rural China that provided increased compensation for rural land expropriation and allowed the transaction of collective construction land for business purposes. We determine an increase in urban settlement intentions of rural migrants following the reform as an exogenous change in rural land transfer of rural migrants. We examine two mechanisms that may explain how the reform increased the settlement intentions of rural migrants, and our empirical evidence suggests that the reform increased social integration and reduced rural place attachment of rural migrants. Furthermore, we determine variations in the effect of the reform across migrants of various ages, social security benefits, and migration distances. Overall, this study extends the implications of the market-oriented rural land reform to sustainable and inclusive urbanization and highlights the role of social integration and rural place attachment in migration decisions.
Disrupted ageing in place: Urbanisation and displaced older villagers in Suzhou, China

Abstract:Objective This study examines the impacts of urbanisation‐induced displacement on rural older villagers and the issues of rebuilding ageing in place in Suzhou Municipality in China's Jiangsu Province. Methods The study employed a qualitative research method involving three measures of data collection, including 20 older‐adult interviews, 14 key informant interviews (with street and community administrators, managers of service companies, managers of nursing homes and community doctor) and participant observation of older villagers' daily life in urban resettlement communities. Results The displacement and resettlement of villagers for urbanisation had serious negative impacts on older villagers, including financial insecurity, relative deprivation and radical changes to the living environment. The community services were limited and insufficient, but the resettlement of the whole village in the same place enabled the village community to maintain social and cultural continuities, which facilitated older villagers' adaptation to the new urban place. Filial piety, though weakened and transformed, continued to play an important role in regulating old‐age support, but descending familism reduced family resources for old‐age support. Conclusions This study highlights the importance of examining the impacts of external social and economic forces, such urbanisation in China, on ageing in place. We draw three conclusions based on empirical research in Suzhou: (1) the resettlement of older villagers in urban areas did not significantly narrow the rural–urban gap in old‐age support in Suzhou; (2) urbanisation‐induced displacement in China affected older residents differently from gentrification in Western countries, due to different processes of compensation and resettlement as well as China's rural–urban welfare gap; and (3) community services for displaced older villagers are limited, but social and cultural continuities before and after resettlement have helped older villagers adapt to the new urban place.

Investigating Social Welfare Change in Urban Village Transformation: A Rural Migrant Perspective

Abstract:An increasing number of large cities have experienced urban village transformation because of the rapid industrialization and urbanization in China. Extant literature largely focuses on urban village transformation and its ensuing developments. This research examined the social welfare change through six welfare categories of indicators, namely, economic condition, dwelling condition, development opportunity, social security, living environment, and psychology. Value change in fuzzy membership was used to reveal the changes in social welfare for rural migrants before and after urban village transformation. Data were collected from questionnaires distributed in four cities of Zhejiang Province in 2014. Fuzzy assessment model was developed to analyze the collected data. Results corroborated that nearly all the values of the welfare categories decreased, except for the value of dwelling condition. The findings confirmed that the rural migrants do not primarily receive the benefits of urban village transformation. In addition, such transformation does not improve urban village harmony. Various measures should be applied to improve rural migrant welfare, including enhancing rural migrant settlement intention, encouraging rural migrants to return to their respective hometowns, and implementing policies for regionally differentiated welfare rights. The findings of this study can provide references for local governments to substantially implement urban village transformation.

Abstract:Abstract To understand the performance of urban villages in terms of justice and inclusivity, an investigation from bottom-up was launched in current study. Through semantic differential (SD) method, subjective feelings of residents, workers and tourists were collected and evaluated; overall feeling was positive. Study indicated that urban villages in China, like in East Lake Village, with diverse life styles at all levels of society and registering positive overall evaluation, are sustainable. It concluded that development of adjacent formal space of the city, autonomous formalization of villagers and low rent of informal housing are essential conditions for a sustainable urban village. Suggested strategies for sustainable upgrading and reconstruction of urban villages should recognize and respect various types of groups, incorporating different demands and usage of space to protect diverse life styles. These strategies may entail cleaning, lighting and coloring which are effective ways to improve environmental quality.

Abstract:In the context of the transition from “Native-rural China” to “Urban-rural China”, suburban villages have undergone rapid reconstruction of format, industry, and function. Aiming to reveal the evolution characteristics and driving forces, this study selected She Village, located in suburban areas of Nanjing, to analyze the changes of both dominant and recessive morphology of land use by employing participatory rural appraisal, remote sensing, and geographic information systems. The results showed that She Village witnessed three stages, including industrial development, ecological restoration, and service industry development, from 1980 to 2018, with more diversified management modes, multifunctional land use, and intensified land fragmentation. The drivers included natural resources, population growth, policy of Grain for Green, urban market demand, etc., the intensity of which showed trends of “increase–increase–increase”, “increase–decrease–decrease”, “periodically intermittent”, and “increase–decrease–increase” in turn. The tourist villages undergo three stages of industrial development, agricultural development, and service industry development, with periodical characteristics driven by top-down policies, the endogenous force of the village, and the radiation and diffusion of the city. This research deepens the understanding of the development process of suburban villages and provides a reference for land policy making and planning in other similar villages.
Urban and Rural Spatial Evolution under Game Theory: A Case Study of Urban Villages in Guangzhou, China

Abstract:Socialist China has undergone a transformation from a planned system to a market economy, and South China region is at the forefront of this modernization process. In the process of urban expansion and industrial construction, the original rural settlement form will evolve and undergo adaptive transformation. This study starts from the theoretical foundation of the Conzen's research on the evolution of urban morphology, and takes a series of urban villages in the central city of Guangzhou in South China, represented by Shipai, Yangji, Pazhou and Wenchong Village, as the research objects. By using literature research, archival research, map and image analysis methods, the morphological periods of the land parcels are divided, including the morphological framework, plane type units, and the plot pattern and architectural pattern, as well as the underlying social driving factors. It is concluded that the driving force for the morphological change of villages on the edge of urban areas in southern China should be the change in production and living organizational forms caused by differences in urbanization levels, which is essentially a process of urban-rural game and interaction, and has characteristics such as gradualness, complexity, and diffusion from the centre to the edge.

Abstract:In contrast with the classical topics of poverty and exclusion of rural areas, the multiple dualities in the social-spatial dimension of villages in semi-urbanized suburbs of China’s large cities have received little attention to date. As this paper demonstrates, such dualities have emerged during China’s rapid urbanization since the early 2000s. It is firstly argued that these dual characteristics are derived from the institutional separation of urban and rural entitlements (e.g., hukou, welfare, land property ownership etc.). These distinctions are then projected into social capital differentiation, such as the division between the strong and weak ties of local community residents. Consequentially, the dualities are embodied in the residential space segregation between established residents and rural migrants that is divided into Houses in Single-Family Occupancy (HSFOs) and Houses in Multiple-Family Occupancy (HMFOs). To support these claims, a case study of the village of Zhoucun, a southern suburb of the Nanjing Metropolitan Area on the east coast China, is used. This draws on both quantitative and qualitative data that includes interviews with authorized officers from local government to municipal government, and a questionnaire survey and interviews with both the HSFO and HMFO residents themselves.

Abstract:Being the world's largest developing country and having a vast rural population and large swaths of rural areas, China has experienced complex historical periods. However, few studies provide general summaries of spatial evolution of rural settlements, particularly the evolutionary contexts of complex historical processes. Considering that China's society, economy, and spaces in urban and rural areas have entered a phase of rapid restructuring in response to economic globalisation and the new urbanisation in recent years, exploring and summarising the general evolutionary path of the spatial structure of rural settlements over a long period of time constitute a particularly important research objective. This study examined Sunan region, an ideal representative epitomising the modern history of China, as a case area, results found that the evolutionary process of spatial structure of rural settlements could be categorised as discrete and isomorphic, centripetal and hierarchical, branching and dual, and diversified network system follow the historical periodisation. Rural spatial structure has experienced three moments of transformation under the trend of urban-rural mutual interaction, thus mechanism is driven by internal and external forces under economic and social change over different periods, evidently in contemporary era. Although rural settlements have manifested diversified developmental patterns in China, theories and methods that are applicable to domestic situations are still urgently needed to summarise the evolutionary mechanism and to provide vital channels for the national strategy of rural revitalisation in the process of urban rural integrated development.

Abstract:As participants and beneficiaries in the construction of beautiful rural countryside areas, peasant households can have an important impact on the performance of the new rural construction policies, their individual behaviors have become a much-studied topic in international rural studies. Starting from the concept of “put people first” and adopting the concept of a symbiotic system among peasant households, this study analyzes the elements, mechanisms, and operations of a peasant household symbiotic system in the process of rural settlement restructuring, taking Fengsi village in Chongqing, China as an example. Retaining traditional rural interpersonal relationship which takes lineal, collateral and terrain as the links, this study establishs a symbiotic relationship; that is, resources, benefits, and responsibility for environmental construction are shared. Accordingly, the spatial pattern developed into “the axis-line-distribution along the road”, which included one living-oriented functional group and three production-oriented functional groups. The one living-oriented functional group will be located at the junction of roads and rivers in the southeast of the village with three different types of peasant household, including the non-agricultural diversification type, the non-agricultural specialization type, and the part-time development type. The three production-oriented functional groups will situate along country roads in the middle and east of the village with three other different types of peasant household, including the agricultural diversification type, the agricultural specialization type, and the part-time development type. This study, therefore, provides theoretical support and methodological guidance for the construction of Chinese rural human settlements that are suitable for living in, convenient for employment, and pleasant to travel around.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the economic and social impact of rural reform and economic restructuring in China. The impact is assessed through a case study of Yuhang, Zhejiang, by focusing on the changing economic landscape and rural–urban relationship in China during the reform period. While we note that peasant living conditions have been improved, particularly in the 1990s, we argue that such progress has been an outcome of agricultural and industrial production at the household level rather than simply from the rapidly growing township and village enterprises as it is generally believed. In contrast to the macro-level trend, the growing economy has reduced the overall spatial disparity, and produced a fairly even economic landscape in Yuhang. However, the rise of private industries has caused an economic gap between social groups, particularly the local entrepreneurs and migrant workers. Participated by both local peasants and outside migrants, urbanization has rapidly penetrated into localities, traditionally referred to as rural, in a “hidden” form, through which people's interactive space is enlarged and villagers become urbanites in activity and behaviour. The reform-induced industrialization and urbanization have also rapidly altered the physical landscape at the local level, as evidenced by the substantial rate of rural housing development, rural to urban migration, and agricultural to non-agricultural land conversion.

Abstract:With economic development and changes in the industrial structure of cities in China, the transformation of industries from agricultural to non-agricultural has brought about significant changes in the living spaces, economic growth, ideology, and cultural attitudes of rural people. Placing people first and responding to rural residents' wishes in the process of rapid development could become an important issue. This study focuses on the relationship between the well-being experience of relocated residents in rural areas and the public realm of new communities, and constructs a framework for understanding the relationship between the two. By doing so, it aims to resolve the conflict between the design of new settlements and the residents' needs, thus providing a reference for similar designs in the future.

Abstract:Influenced by globalization, rural transition in developed Western countries has experienced processes of productivism, post-productivism, and multifunctional development. By contrast, rural transition in most developing countries has been accompanied by rapid urbanization, which has become a core topic in geography research. As the world's largest developing country, China has undergone profound development since the reform and opening-up. Moreover, rural spaces in some eastern coastal areas have entered the stage of reconstruction after decades of industrialization and urbanization. This paper takes Suzhou as the case area and measures the process of rural transition from 1990 to 2015 by constructing an index system. It then analyzes the characteristics of space-time evolution using exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) methods to reveal the influence of economic and social development on rural transition. The results show that rural transition, which generally entails the weakening of rurality and enhancing of urbanity on a macro scale, tends to be heterogeneous across different regions on a micro scale. This paper argues that multifunctionality will be the main future trend of rural transition in rapidly urbanizing areas. The experience in Suzhou could provide an example for establishing policies on sustainable development in rural spaces and achieving urban-rural co-governance.

Abstract:While rural resilience is considered valuable in global sustainable development and is gaining increasing attention, socio-cultural resilience in rural contexts has attracted limited scholarly attention. Intergenerational relationship as a crucial indicator of socio-cultural resilience and transformation in rural areas, is under-studied. Drawing on a qualitatively based and multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork in two villages in Guangdong, China, this article interrogates how rural residents understand and practice intergenerational relationship, further observing rural resilience from the socio-cultural perspective. The findings revealed the following: 1) changes in intergenerational relations in rural China are neither simple nor linear, but rather highly diversified and contextualized; 2) the status of intergenerational relationships in the villages is highly related to a series of external factors, including demographical features, economic condition and geographical location, etc.; 3) intergenerational relationships and the way rural families operate, interact, and are defined are closely related. Changes in intergenerational relationships not only reveal important shifts in the social and cultural makeup of rural communities, but they also serve as a significant indicator of the resiliency of both rural communities and families. This article, through those results, echoes the rising diversity of contemporary rural family life in China, arguing that intergenerational relationship provides a nuanced, humane perspective to probe social and cultural changes and rural-urban relations in rapidly urbanizing societies. We call for collaborative action to cultivate the positive intergenerational relationships, enhance the rural resilience from socio-cultural perspective, further contribute to the revive of countryside.

Evolution of the Physical and Social Spaces of 'Village Resettlement Communities' from the Production of Space Perspective: A Case Study of Qunyi Community in Kunshan

Abstract:Village resettlement communities (VRCs) are a special type of urban community that the government has promoted considerably during China's rapid urbanization. This study uses the theory of the production of space as a basis to explore the processes and mechanisms of the physical and social space evolution of VRCs through a case study of Qunyi Community, one of the largest VRCs in Kunshan. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were employed in this study. Results indicate that the coupling relationship between local government power and diversified capital is the fundamental reason that promotes the production of macrophysical space. Moreover, the economic and social relationships among residents promote the reproduction of microsocial space. Landless farmers are the most important spatial producers in the microsocial space. The individual needs and cultural differences of immigrant workers also have significant effects on microspatial production. Furthermore, the production and reproduction of the physical and social spaces, respectively, of VRCs deduce the adjustment relationship among the urbanization processes of land, population, and individuals. Results also indicate that the urbanization of individuals appears to lag behind the previous two processes. This study can provide a theoretical basis for the spatial renovation and management optimization of VRCs, as well as the promotion of a new type of "people-centered" urbanization.
Transformations in Rural Community Order: A Case Study of Puqian Village, Jiangxi Province, from 1978 to 2022

Abstract:Since the reform and opening-up, village communities in China have undergone significant transformations alongside rapid modernization. The reconstruction of these communities is a key issue in China's rural revitalization efforts and necessitates an analysis of the evolutionary characteristics and drivers of village community order. This study defines the concept of village community order and develops corresponding evaluation indicators and quantitative methods. Taking Puqian Village in Ji'an County, Jiangxi Province, as a case study, the research explores the evolution of village community order across distinct development stages—1978, 1985, 2003, and 2022. Data for the study were collected through participatory rural appraisal, remote sensing image processing, and GIS spatial analysis. The results reveal that since the reform and opening-up, Puqian Village has experienced increasing spatial complexity, disordered spatial structures, unbalanced population dynamics, and a weakening social network. These changes were especially pronounced during the periods of market-oriented development and urban–rural integration. The evolution of village community order is influenced by factors such as livelihood transformations, the decline of local culture, the dissolution of public authority, and weakened governance structures. By analyzing village community order from the dual perspectives of social and spatial order, this study provides a systematic framework for understanding village community changes.

Abstract:The process of absorbing villages into urban areas in China is of major significance and can follow several paths. Specifically, the dual urban and rural characteristics of villages located close to cities provide new opportunities and constraints for active community engagement. This paper examines two related options through case studies in Kunming, Southwest China, and the interface between the urban and the rural in peri-urban studies. One village was transformed from a collective landholding system into a village shareholding company. In this case, villagers' self-construction and redevelopment activities significantly changed the built environment in the settlement. The second village was transformed into a new urban residential community by property developers. In this process, villagers also had their hukou [household registration] status altered from 'rural' to 'urban'. The study illustrates the variable transition processes between rural and urban in this particular region and highlights the relationship between villagers and their surrounding environment. It is argued that peri-urban spaces in Southwest China retained their distinctiveness and certain rural characteristics despite the integration through the urbanisation process, and that the relationships between villagers and their surrounding built environment are constantly being re-appropriated and reinvented.

Abstract:Since the reform and opening up in 1978, China has experienced a rapid urbanization process, with an increasing urban population. In recent years, with the improvement of the rural living environment and the rise of the urban middle class, more and more people have moved from cities to villages in China. The gentrification phenomenon has also emerged in rural China. This paper takes Xixinan Village, a traditional village in China, as a case. On the basis of field investigation, it employs qualitative research methods and grounded theory to explore the emergence and influence of rural gentrification in the traditional village. The finding show that: (1) the rural gentrification in Xixinan Village was divided into two stages, namely, the setting-in stage of immigrants (2009–2014) and the rural gentrification development stage (2015–present). (2) The impacts of rural gentrification in Xixinan Village primarily include four aspects: population growth, landscape change, economic transformation and cultural transformation. The increased population mainly includes the urban lifestyle type of gentrifiers, new rural construction type of gentrifiers and returning home entrepreneurial type of gentrifiers. The landscape change is mainly manifested in the spatial form of villages, housing landscape, street landscape and other aspects. The economic transformation is manifested in the rapid development of rural tourism services and cultural industry in Xixinan. In addition, with the influx of the new urban middle class, new aesthetic methods and cultural vitality have emerged in Xixinan Village. (3) The rural gentrification and its impacts in Xixinan Village can be interpreted from three perspectives, i.e., consumption orientation, production orientation and the unique role of the government. Furthermore, the limitations of the study are briefly analyzed, and the "displacement" problem caused by rural gentrification in China needs follow-up research in the future.

Abstract:Rapid economic development in China has generated substantial demand for urban land for development, resulting in an unprecedented urbanization process. The expansion of urbanized cities has started to engulf rural areas, making the urban–rural boundary less and less conspicuous in China. Urban encroachment has led to a rapid shrinkage of the rural territory as the rural–urban migration has increased due to better job opportunities and living standards in the urban cities. Urban villages, governed by a rural property rights mechanism, have started to emerge sporadically within urbanised areas. Various approaches, such as state-led, developer-led, or collective-led approaches, to redevelop these urban villages have been adopted with varying degrees of success. This paper uses a case-study framework to analyse the state–market interplay in two very different urban village redevelopment cases in Guangzhou. By an in-depth comparative analysis of the two regeneration cases in Guangzhou, which started within close proximity in terms of geographical location and timing, we are able to shed light on how completely different outcomes may result from different forms of state–market interplay. It is found that a neoliberal policy approach that aims at coordinating state resources with market forces rather than discarding the state’s role provides a more satisfactory outcome in urban village redevelopment when there are a lot of stakeholders involved each with different agendas. The state maintains a good balance of the power-play in the process with a clear and supportive policy and regulatory guidance, leaving the market to function more effectively and satisfactorily in effectuating capital flow for the project, which helps to achieve sustainable outcomes.
