Abstract:We present a multifunctional tactile sensor inspired by human hairy skin structure, in which the sensitive hair sensor and the robust skin sensor are integrated into a single device via a pair of Co-based ferromagnetic microwire arrays in a very simple manner. The sensor possesses a self-tunable effective compliance with respect to the magnitude of the stimulus, allowing a wide range of loading force to be measured. The sensor also exhibits some amazing functions, such as air-flow detection, material property characterization, and excellent damage resistance. The novel sensing mechanism and structure provide a new strategy for designing multifunctional tactile sensors and show great potential applications on intelligent robot and sensing in harsh environments.

Abstract:A multistimuli‐driven sensing actuator with the high‐performing actuating capability is fabricated in the form of thin‐film structures, which is then designed into a multifunctional hairy skin capable of providing wind and tactile detection as well as thermal and humid sensation. By mimicking the fast and involuntary piloerection of mammalian hairs, the thermoregulation function is achieved automatically.Living organisms are imparted with compact intelligence in which a myriad of functionalities are delivered by highly integrated and demodularized subunits, as in the case of the mammalian skin in which different embedding stimuli‐receptors and follicles work together to provide rich sensation for temperature and tactility, as well as the visible and regulatory response of hair erection via the arrector pili muscle. A breakthrough in robotics is to create similar intelligence using emerging stimuli‐responsive materials. Here, a thin film composite comprising a transition metal oxide/hydroxide layer for sensation and high‐performing actuation under environmental stimuli including visible light, humidity, and temperature, and a graphene‐based layer for feedback strain sensing, is developed to demonstrate such an approach of robotics. The system is used to construct robotic hair that mimics well mammalian hair in functionality, and devices for sensing objects for their effective manipulation. This research opens a "material intelligence" approach for robotics.

Abstract:Abstract Human skin comprises multiple hierarchical layers that perform various functions such as protection, sensing, and structural support. Developing electronic skin (E‐skin) with similar properties has broad implications in health monitoring, prosthetics, and soft robotics. While previous efforts have predominantly concentrated on sensory capabilities, this study introduces a hierarchical polymer system that not only structurally resembles the epidermis‐dermis bilayer structure of skin but also encompasses sensing functions. The system comprises a polymeric hydrogel, representing the “dermis”, and a superimposed nanoporous polymer film, forming the “epidermis”. Within the film, interconnected nanoparticles mimic the arrangement of interlocked corneocytes within the epidermis. The fabrication process employs a robust in situ interfacial precipitation polymerization of specific water‐soluble monomers that become insoluble during polymerization. This process yields a hybrid layer establishing a durable interface between the film and hydrogel. Beyond the structural mimicry, this hierarchical structure offers functionalities resembling human skin, which includes (1) water loss protection of hydrogel by tailoring the hydrophobicity of the upper polymer film; (2) tactile sensing capability via self‐powered triboelectric nanogenerators; (3) built‐in gold nanowire‐based resistive sensor toward temperature and pressure sensing. This hierarchical polymeric approach represents a potent strategy to replicate both the structure and functions of human skin in synthetic designs.

Abstract:Electronic skin (e-skin) capable of acquiring environmental and physiological information has attracted interest for healthcare, robotics, and human-machine interaction. However, traditional 2D e-skin only allows for in-plane force sensing, which limits access to comprehensive stimulus feedback due to the lack of out-of-plane signal detection caused by its 3D structure. Here, a dimension-switchable bioinspired receptor is reported to achieve multimodal perception by exploiting film kirigami. It offers the detection of in-plane (pressure and bending) and out-of-plane (force and airflow) signals by dynamically inducing the opening and reclosing of sensing unit. The receptor's hygroscopic and thermoelectric properties enable the sensing of humidity and temperature. Meanwhile, the thermoelectric receptor can differentiate mechanical stimuli from temperature by the voltage. The development enables a wide range of sensory capabilities of traditional e-skin and expands the applications in real life. A flexible multimodal receptor can achieve a reversible transformation from 2D to 3D structure by bending or stretching the sensor, drawing inspiration from the morphological switch observed in the hummingbird feathers. Interestingly, a single-unit receptor is capable of sensing multiple stimuli, including in-plane deformation (pressure and bending), out-of-plane deformation (force and airflow), temperature, and humidity. image

Abstract:Electronic skin has fast developed in recent years for its promising application in wearable sensing. Multifunction of breathability, self-adhesion, sweat release and diverse sensing is highly required but has not been achieved on a single device. Herein, inspired by natural human skin, we develop a breathable and self-adhesive electronic skin based on an all-nanofiber platform with unique directional moisture-wicking properties and bifunctional pressure and non-contact sensing capability. The multifunctional device is integrated with four functional parts self-adhesive gel, moisture-wicking structure, pressure sensing layer and non-contact detection layer. Benefits from structural design and advanced sensing principles, the sensor not only demonstrates high pressure-sensing sensitivity of 23 kPa-1 and ultrawide non-contact detection range of 2 m but also exhibits excellent breathability of 53.9 mm s-1 and fast moisture-wicking ability. Interestingly, the sensor can be tightly attached to human skin at skin temperature and be easily peeled off at elevated temperatures by using the temperature-controlled reversible phase-transition gel. Towards practical wearable sensing applications, different movements can be identified with 97.3 % accuracy by using the four-layer Multi-Layer Perceptron neural network. This work will boost the development of next-generation multifunctional electronic skins with both wearing comfortability and diverse sensing capability.

Abstract:<p>Electronic skin (e‐skin) technology is an exciting frontier to drive the next generation of wearable electronics owing to its high level of wearability, enabling high accuracy to harvest information of users and their surroundings. Recently, biomimicry of human and biological skins has become a great inspiration for realizing novel wearable electronic systems with exceptional multifunctionality as well as advanced sensory functions. This review covers and highlights bioinspired e‐skins mimicking perceptive features of human and biological skins. In particular, five main components in tactile sensation processes of human skin are individually discussed with recent advances of e‐skins that mimic the unique sensing mechanisms of human skin. In addition, diverse functionalities in user‐interactive, skin‐attachable, and ultrasensitive e‐skins are introduced with the inspiration from unique architectures and functionalities, such as visual expression of stimuli, reversible adhesion, easy deformability, and camouflage, in biological skins of natural creatures. Furthermore, emerging wearable sensor systems using bioinspired e‐skins for body motion tracking, healthcare monitoring, and prosthesis are described. Finally, several challenges that should be considered for the realization of next‐generation skin electronics are discussed with recent outcomes for addressing these challenges.</p>

Abstract:There is huge demand for recreating human skin with the functions of epidermis and dermis for interactions with the physical world. Herein, a biomimetic, ultrasensitive, and multifunctional hydrogel-based electronic skin (BHES) was proposed. Its epidermis function was mimicked using poly(ethylene terephthalate) with nanoscale wrinkles, enabling accurate identification of materials through the capabilities to gain/lose electrons during contact electrification. Internal mechanoreceptor was mimicked by interdigital silver electrodes with stick-slip sensing capabilities to identify textures/roughness. The dermis function was mimicked by patterned microcone hydrogel, achieving pressure sensors with high sensitivity (17.32 mV/Pa), large pressure range (20-5000 Pa), low detection limit, and fast response (10 ms)/recovery time (17 ms). Assisted by deep learning, this BHES achieved high accuracy and minimized interference in identifying materials (95.00% for 10 materials) and textures (97.20% for four roughness cases). By integrating signal acquisition/processing circuits, a wearable drone control system was demonstrated with three-degree-of-freedom movement and enormous potentials for soft robots, self-powered human-machine interaction interfaces of digital twins.

Abstract:Electronic skins (e-skins) with multifunctional sensing functions have attracted a lot of attention due to their promising applications in intelligent robotics, human-machine interfaces, and wearable healthcare systems. Here, we report a multifunctional e-skin based on patterned metal films for tactile sensing of pressure and temperature with a broad linear response range by implementing the single sensing mechanism of piezoresistivity, which allows for the easy signal processing and simple device configuration. The sensing pixel features serpentine metal traces and spatially distributed microprotrusions. Experimental and numerical studies reveal the fundamental aspects of the multifunctional tactile sensing mechanism of the e-skin, which exhibits excellent flexibility and wearable conformability. The fabrication approach being compatible with the well-established microfabrication processes has enabled the scalable manufacturing of a large-scale e-skin for spatial tactile sensing in various application scenarios.

Abstract:Versatile electronic skin devices that enable detection of multimodal signals have revealed great potential for human health monitoring. To make a versatile electronic skin, hierarchical micronanostructures are essential to obtain improved sensing performance and multisignal detection capability. However, current strategies for developing a nanostructured electronic skin usually involve complex procedures, harsh experimental conditions, and the use of expensive equipment, which limit its practical applications. In this paper, we reported the fabrication of a multifunctional wearable electronic skin with hierarchical micronanostructures by using natural reed leaves as templates. The capacitive-type electronic skin is fabricated by double-sided coating of Au electrodes on an artificial polydimethylsiloxane reed leaf that is duplicated from natural reed leaves via soft lithography. The electronic skin features a very simple device structure yet high sensing performance. It permits multimodal signal detection, including that of pressure, deformation, and proximity, and can serve as surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates for the detection of metabolites in sweat because of the formation of plasmonic structures. The versatile electronic skin can be attached to the human skin, and it enables effective monitoring of multiphysiological signals, revealing great potential for cutting-edge applications, such as human health monitoring.

Abstract:Abstract Mechano-sensitive hair-like sensilla (MSHS) have an ingenious and compact three-dimensional structure and have evolved widely in living organisms to perceive multidirectional mechanical signals. Nearly all MSHS are iontronic or electronic, including their biomimetic counterparts. Here, an all-optical mechano-sensor mimicking MSHS is prototyped and integrated based on a thin-walled glass microbubble as a flexible whispering-gallery-mode resonator. The minimalist integrated device has a good directionality of 32.31 dB in the radial plane of the micro-hair and can detect multidirectional displacements and forces as small as 70 nm and 0.9 μN, respectively. The device can also detect displacements and forces in the axial direction of the micro-hair as small as 2.29 nm and 3.65 μN, respectively, and perceive different vibrations. This mechano-sensor works well as a real-time, directional mechano-sensory whisker in a quadruped cat-type robot, showing its potential for innovative mechano-transduction, artificial perception, and robotics applications.

Abstract:A novel bionic tactile E‐skin combining the characteristics of three coupling elements (Stratum spinosum, Meissner corpuscle, and Piezo2 protein) is developed by direct ink writing. Under the coupling enhancement effect, the fabricated E‐skin exhibits high sensitivity, low hysteresis, fast response, etc., and it is expanded to a sensor array for the machine learning‐assisted intellisense system with brain‐like recognition ability. In the pursuit of tactile sensation resembling human skin, the electronic skin (E‐skin) has long been a subject of interest and inspires the exploration of various biomimetic structures. Nevertheless, the exceptional functionality of living organisms arises from the synergistic interplay of multiple internal factors, i.e. the coupling enhancement effect, which has received limited attention in existing studies. Here, a tactile E‐skin featuring a multicoupled biomimetic structure that mimics three coupling elements found in the skin: Stratum spinosum, Meissner corpuscle, and Piezo2 protein, is proposed. By amalgamating their distinguishing characteristics, this bionic E‐skin surpasses the performance of conventional counterparts such as sensitivity as high as 388.5 kPa−1, hysteresis as low as 0.76%, and response times as short as 10 ms. Furthermore, its fabrication methodology of efficient 3D printing shows great advantages in terms of production cost and customization. Finally, the sensor is expanded to a 9 × 9 pixels array for a machine learning‐assisted intellisense system to recognize the fruits as a human does, achieving an accuracy of 91.4%. All of these prove the promising potential of this multicoupled biomimetic structure in wearable electronics, human–machine interface, soft robotics, and artificial sensing.

Abstract:Mimicking human's tactile sensory capabilities enables the functionality of electronic skin (e-skin), which plays a crucial role in the interaction between humans and the environment, and operation life and stability are key factors for the application. Here, we present the development of passive e-skin with a layered structure to realize tactile capabilities. No external energy supply is required during the achievement of the tactile functions. The fabricated e-skin shows high sensitivity responses with pressure and temperature stimuli simultaneously. Discrimination of surface textures and mimicking humans' thermosensation are demonstrated by the measurements of time-dependent voltage variations and theoretical fittings. The multifunctional tactile sensing e-skin with low energy consumption provides opportunities of flexible electronics in promising important applications in robotic skins, prosthetics, and wearable sensors.

Abstract:Four types of mechanoreceptors in human skin are capable of sensing different stimuli and transmitting fast adapting (FA) and slow adapting (SA) signals to the brain. To mimic these functions, novel devices have been developed by coupling multiple sensing principles. However, complicated fabrication, high minimum detection limit, and low sensitivity hinder their wide application. In this paper, we report a self-powered mechanical stimulus receptor based on a combination of an artificial ion channel system, a single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator, and a parallel plate capacitor, which can mimic human skin to monitor both dynamic and static stimuli. The introduction of the capacitive sensing part of this sensor overcomes the problem of conventional potentiometric sensors that are unable to monitor static stimuli due to insufficient electrolyte deformation at low pressure. This device detects external mechanical stimuli with high sensitivity (2.75 kPa−1 under dynamics and 1.18 kPa−1 under statics) and low detection limits (19.5 Pa). For the feasibility study, the signal simulation of Morse code is successfully implemented. In addition, the sensor has been shown to be able to detect human joint activity. This new sensor provides more options for future wearable electronic devices and human–computer interfaces.

Abstract:Electronic skin (e-skin), an important part toward the realization of artificial intelligence, has been developing through comprehending, mimicking, and eventually outperforming skin in some aspects. Most of the e-skin substrates are flexible polymers, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Although PDMS was found to be biocompatible, it is not suitable for long-time wearing due to its air impermeability. This study reports a simple and designable leather based e-skin by merging the natural sophisticated structure and wearing comfort of leather with the multifunctional properties of nanomaterials. The leather based e-skin could make leather, "the dead skin," repurposed for its sensing capabilities. This e-skin can be applied in flexible pressure sensors, displays, user-interactive devices, etc. It provides a new class of materials for the development of multifunctional e-skin to mimic or even outshine the functions of real skin.
An Adaptive Ionic Skin With Multiple Stimulus Responses And Moist-Electric Generation Ability

Abstract:It is still a challenge for biomimetic skin to simultaneously achieve an exact match between the specific performance and the various stimulus recognitions of natural skin. Herein, we developed a smart ionic skin based on ion-conducting organohydrogel assemblies, which enables various stimulus responsesviachemical and electrical signal transmission. This organohydrogel substrate endows the electronic skin with great transparency (93.8%), haze (27.8%), stretchability (450%), softness (8.2 mm), antifreeze (-63.28 degrees C), anti-dryness, conductivity, and thermal self-healing properties. The customized and kirigami-inspired pressure/strain-sensing component of the electronic skin allows excellent adaptability and high strain sensitivity. The resultant ionic skin also exhibits sensitive stimulation detection capabilities, including temperature and moisture, within wide ranges of temperature (-30-70 degrees C) and humidity (45-85% RH). Moreover, the spontaneous moist-electric-generating component produces a voltage potential of up to similar to 0.17 V, available for imitating the energy supply station of natural skin. Such a low-cost, reliable, and sustainable ionic skin permits the potential development of complex devices on a large scale, desirable for bionic skins of robotics working under relatively harsh conditions.
Composite Biomaterial for Mimetic Electric Skin Generated by Conductive Polymer/anion Synergistic Effect

Abstract:Developing skin-like biomimetic materials with electromechanical and sensing sensitive properties, so-called E-skin, demonstrate the potential to serve as novel sensors for surface strain measurement. Thus, a versatile bionic E-skin that can perceive strain signals was fabricated based on an electronic/ionic-conductive polymer, named as the CNC@PPy/CS-Cit(3-)/PVA gel. Notably, the citrate ion (Cit(3-)) formed tridentate coordination with N-glucosamine units of chitosan (CS) to form an interpenetrating CS-Cit(3-) polymer network. More importantly, the coordinated Cit(3-) could enhance the mechanical properties of the gels and serve as movable "bridges" among the cellulose nanocrystals@polypyrrole (CNC@PPy) nanoparticles. The as-developed conductive gels exhibited consecutive conductive networks with high conductivity (up to 0.97 & PLUSMN; 0.05 S m(-1)). The sensitivity of this electronic/ionic-conductive skin could be divided into two separate regions at different strain ranges (the GF was 5.27 for strain under 0-2.8% and the GF was 1.24 for strain under 2.8-650%). Owing to the rapid response time (& SIM;160 ms) and recovery time (& SIM;100 ms), remarkable fatigue resistance, and biocompatibility, the E-skin-based sensor can precisely distinguish physiological signals and joint motions of the body. It was envisioned that the bionic E-skin would achieve broad applications as sensors in medical monitoring and implantable bioelectronics.

Abstract:Biomimetic skin-like materials, capable of adapting shapes to variable environments and sensing external stimuli, are of great significance in a wide range of applications, including artificial intelligence, soft robotics, and smart wearable devices. However, such highly sophisticated intelligence has been mainly found in natural creatures while rarely realized in artificial materials. Herein, we fabricate a type of biomimetic iontronics to imitate natural skins using supramolecular polyelectrolyte hydrogels. The dynamic viscoelastic networks provide the biomimetic skin with a wide spectrum of mechanical properties, including flexible reconfiguration ability, robust elasticity, extremely large stretchability, autonomous self-healability, and recyclability. Meanwhile, polyelectrolytes’ ionic conductivity allows multiple sensory capabilities toward temperature, strain, and stress. This work provides not only insights into dynamic interactions and sensing mechanism of supramolecular iontronics, but may also promote the development of biomimetic skins with sophisticated intelligence similar to natural skins.

Abstract:Electronic skins, as the integration of multiple distinct sensors, have aroused broad interests owing to their great potential in sensing applications. However, problems including the interference between sensing components and the difficulty in synchronous monitoring are practically encountered when they are applied to mixed signals. In this work, efforts are devoted to trouble-free technical strategies for laminating three sensors with different sensing abilities into a skin-like electronic device. The use of ionic liquid, combined with particular circuit topologies, ensures the reliable stability against mechanical disturbance during the real-time sensing tests. The intrinsic layered structure and three independent sensing functions of natural skins are successfully presented by this particular device in which three sensors with the ease of preparation are spatially integrated. The changes of temperature, pressure, and infrared light can be recorded simultaneously yet without mutual signal interference. The perfect integration of multiple functional sensors into a single skin-like device without any signal interference makes an important progress for pursuing the goal of future electronic skins that can practically be used as skin.

Abstract:Developing skin-like biomimetic material with electromechanical and sensing-sensitive properties, so-called E-skin, represents potentials to serve as novel sensors for surface strain measurement. Thus, a versatile bionic E-skin that can perceive strain signals was fabricated based on an as-fabricated electronic/ionic-conductive polymer, named as CNC@PPy/CS-Cit 3- /PVA gel. Notably, the citrate ion (Cit 3- ) could form tridentate coordination with the N-glucosamine units of chitosan (CS) to form the interpenetrating CS-Cit 3- polymer network. More importantly, the coordinated Cit 3- could enhance the mechanical properties of the gels and serve as moveable "bridges" among the cellulose nanocrystals@polypyrrole (CNC@PPy) nanoparticles. The as-developed conductive gels exhibited consecutive conductive networks with high conductivity (up to 0.97±0.05 S/m).
