Abstract:Anomalous diffusion impedance due to the solid-state Li+ diffusion in Li-ion batteries is often troublesome for the analysis. In this work, we propose a novel analytical Parallel-diffusion Warburg (PDW) model and couple it with the conventional equivalent electrical circuit model (EECM) analysis to tackle this long-standing challenge. The analytical expression of the PDW is derived from the classical Fickian diffusion framework, introducing non-unified diffusion coefficients that originate from the diverse crystalline conditions of Li+ diffusion paths, as theoretically demonstrated in the atomistic modeling results. The proposed approach (EECM + PDW) is successfully employed to study the diffusion impedance of thin-film LiNi0.5Mn1.5O2 (LNMO) electrodes and porous LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) electrodes, demonstrating the applicability and robustness of this method.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are a powerful tool to study diffusion processes in battery electrolyte and electrode materials. From a single molecular dynamics simulation many properties relevant to diffusion can be obtained, including the diffusion path, attempt frequency, activation energies, and collective diffusion processes. These detailed diffusion properties provide a thorough understanding of diffusion in solid electrolytes, and provides direction for the design of improved solid electrolyte materials. Here a thorough analysis methodology is developed, and applied to DFT MD simulations of Li-ion diffusion in \beta-Li3PS4. The methodology presented is generally applicable to crystalline materials and facilitates the analysis of molecular dynamics simulations. The code used for the analysis is freely available at: https://bitbucket.org/niekdeklerk/md-analysis-with-matlab. The results on \beta-Li3PS4 demonstrate that jumps between bc-planes limit the conductivity of this important class of solid electrolyte materials. The simulations indicate that by adding Li-interstitials or Li-vacancies the rate limiting jump process can be accelerated significantly, which induces three dimensional diffusion, resulting in an increased Li-ion diffusivity. Li-vacancies can be introduced through Br-doping, which is predicted to result in an order of magnitude larger Li-ion conductivity in \beta-Li3PS4. Furthermore, the present simulations rationalise the improved Li-ion diffusivity upon O-doping through the creation of local Li-interstitials.

Abstract:Finding Li-ion migration pathways in solid state electrolytes is an important prerequisite for disruptive development of all-solid-state battery materials. Previous studies either used empirical method such as bond valence (BV) or relied on on-the-fly first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations, which are very time and resource consuming. In this paper, we propose an approach of using spatially dependent electronic charge density to predict Li-ion migration pathways in superionic conductors with first-principles level precision. Since the electronic charge density can be simultaneously calculated along with the structure optimization, this method saves tremendous computing time in finding the migration pathways, as is the case for the currently widely used FPMD method. Its accuracy and feasibility are validated by reproducing 3D diffusion channel of six representative Li-ion structures [LiFePO4, Li2S, Li5PS4Cl2, Li10GeP2S12, Li4GeS4, and Li3Y(PS4)2]. Our approach is expected to accelerate high-throughput screening of superionic conductors, such as using the most likely migration paths replaces global search of migration paths for first-principles method. The direct relationship between ion transport pathways and electronic charge densities constructed here could serve as an efficient descriptor for training machine learning models. Due to the inherent relationship between bottom-level electronic charge density and macroscopic properties, we expect that this method can be also extended to designing materials with other target physical or chemical properties such as thermoelectrics, photovoltaics, and fuel cells.

Abstract:High-throughput analysis of the ion transport pathways is critical for screening fast ion conductors. Currently, empirical methods, such as the geometric analysis and bond valence site energy (BVSE) methods, are respectively used for the task. Geometric analysis method can only extract geometric and topological pathway properties without considering the interatomic interactions, while the BVSE method alone does not yield a geometric classification of the sites and interstices forming the pathway. Herein, we propose a highly efficient and informative method to identify interstices and connecting segments constructing an ion transport network by combining topological pathway network and BVSE landscape, which enables to obtain both the geometry and energy profiles of nonequivalent ion transport pathways between adjacent lattice sites. These pathways can be further used as the input for first-principles nudged elastic band calculations with automatically generated chains of images. By performing high-throughput screening of 48,321 Li-, Na-, Mg- and Al-containing ionic compounds from the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database based on the filter combining geometric analysis and BVSE methods, we obtain 1,270 compounds with connected ionic migration pathways of suitable sizes and low migration energy barriers, which include both previously reported fast ion conductors, and new promising materials to be explored further.

Robust and efficient calculation of activation energy by automated path search and density functional theory

Abstract:Because inorganic solid electrolytes are one of the key components for application to all-solid-state batteries, high-ionic-conductivity materials must be developed. Therefore, we propose a method of efficiently evaluating the activation energy of ionic diffusion by calculating a potential-energy surface (PES), searching for the optimal diffusion path by an algorithm developed using dynamic programming (DP), and calculating the corresponding activation energy by the nudged elastic band (NEB) method. Taking beta-Li3PS4 as an example, the activation energy of Li-ion diffusion was calculated as 0.43, 0.25, and 0.40 eV in the a-, b-, and c-axis directions, respectively, which is in good agreement with previously reported values. By comprehensively searching for the lowest energy path by PES-DP, the arbitrariness of the path selection can be eliminated, and the activation energy must only be calculated using the NEB method a few times, which greatly reduces the computational cost required for evaluating activation energy and enables the high-throughput screening of solid state electrolytes.
Screening Possible Solid Electrolytes by Calculating the Conduction Pathways Using Bond Valence Method

Abstract:Inorganic solid electrolytes have distinguished advantages in terms of safety and stability, and are promising to substitute for conventional organic liquid electrolytes. However, low ionic conductivity of typical candidates is the key problem. As connective diffusion path is the prerequisite for high performance, we screen for possible solid electrolytes from the 2004 International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) database by calculating conduction pathways using Bond Valence (BV) method. There are 109846 inorganic crystals in the 2004 ICDD database, and 5295 of them contain lithium. Except for those with toxic, radioactive, rare, or variable valence elements, 1380 materials are candidates for solid electrolytes. The rationality of the BV method is approved by comparing the existing solid electrolytes’ conduction pathways we had calculated with those from experiments or first principle calculations. The implication for doping and substitution, two important ways to improve the conductivity, is also discussed. Among them Li2CO3 is selected for a detailed comparison, and the pathway is reproduced well with that based on the density functional studies. To reveal the correlation between connectivity of pathways and conductivity, α/γ-LiAlO2 and Li2CO3 are investigated by the impedance spectrum as an example, and many experimental and theoretical studies are in process to indicate the relationship between property and structure. The BV method can calculate one material within a few minutes, providing an efficient way to lock onto targets from abundant data, and to investigate the structure-property relationship systematically.

Abstract:Advanced battery management systems can improve the safety, operation efficiency, and service life of the power Li-ion battery. Such a battery management system requires accurate information about the spatial distribution of Li+ concentration in the electrolyte. In general, the acquisition of the spatial distribution information of Li+ concentration can be described based on the Li battery physicochemical model and its corresponding solution algorithm. In this study, a pseudo-2D electrochemical model is used as the Li battery physicochemical model, which can provide complete information about the spatial distribution of Li+ concentration in the electrolyte throughout the full battery. Regarding the solution algorithm, which normally takes considerable time for the traditional finite difference method to discretize the diffusion partial differential equation, a new algorithm combining the finite element and θ method is proposed and a simple and efficient linear basis function is introduced into the finite element method in this study, thus aiming at a quick calculation on the spatial distribution of Li+ concentration in the electrolyte throughout the complete battery under different charging/discharging modes. The results of numerical calculation show: (1) in the frequency domain, the numerical solution obtained by the finite element method is highly consistent with the analytical solution obtained by the variation-of-parameters method; (2) in the time domain, the numerical solution obtained by the combination of finite element method and θ method agrees well with that obtained by the finite difference method. The algorithm proposed in this paper provides a new method for obtaining the spatial distribution of Li+ concentration in the electrolyte throughout the full battery with high speed and accuracy.

Abstract:The solid-state diffusion coefficient of the electrode active material is one of the key parameters in lithium-ion battery modelling. Conventionally, this diffusion coefficient is estimated through the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT). In this work, the validity of GITT and a faster alternative technique, intermittent current interruption (ICI), are investigated regarding their effectiveness through a black-box testing approach. A Doyle-Fuller-Newman model with parameters for a LiNi$_{0.8}$Mn$_{0.1}$Co$_{0.1}$O$_2$ electrode is used as a fairly faithful representation as a real battery system, and the GITT and ICI experiments are simulated to extract the diffusion coefficient. With the parameters used in this work, the results show that both the GITT and ICI methods can identify the solid-state diffusion coefficient very well compared to the value used as input into the simulation model. The ICI method allows more frequent measurement but the experiment time is 85% less than what takes to perform a GITT test. Different fitting approaches and fitting length affected the estimation accuracy, however not significantly. Moreover, a thinner electrode, a higher C-rate and a greater electrolyte diffusion coefficient will lead to an estimation of a higher solid-state diffusion coefficient, generally closer to the target value.

Abstract:Identifying new materials that combine high ionic conductivity with structural and electrochemical stability so far remains a slow trial and error search process. To rationally accelerate materials design and exploit the opportunities in the materials genome a dependable rapid screening of materials is required that can pre-select structures that merit higher level computational as well as experimental characterization. Here we report on the progress of our “softBV” bond-valence site energy-based automated pathway analysis utilizing our new Bond Valence Pathway Analyzer (BVPA) – with fast bond valence site energy calculations to quickly obtain suggested candidate materials for fast ionic conduction. BVPA provides rapid and simplified visualization, in order to bridge the gap between experimentalists and simulation [1,2]. Calculation of ion transport pathways can be done extremely quickly on the order of seconds or minutes on desktop PCs providing a speedup factor of 3 to 5 orders of magnitude compared to DFT-based NEB methods. Combined with a graphical user interface our software suite (that can be downloaded from [2] and is free for academic use) should enable experimentalists to quickly identify candidate solid electrolyte materials. We also aim to integrate the pre-screening into an automated workflow for subsequent DFT characterization [3]. Results will be benchmarked against both experimental and DFT NEB migration barriers. Besides the migration barriers the approach now also comprises an AI-based dopant predictor utilizing bond-valence-based crystal chemical descriptors to assist experimentalists in exploring favorable substitutional doping strategies. We will also compare the predictability of absolute room temperature conductivities from static energy landscape analysis, bond-valence based empirical MD simulations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. While for small fast-ion conductor structures at sufficiently high temperatures AIMD appears to be the gold standard, the less reliable but computationally empirical approaches have an advantage in modelling complex disordered interfaces at low temperatures over longer periods. This eliminates the hazards involved in extrapolations down to room temperature properties for the frequent cases of order-disorder phase transitions at intermediate temperatures. As an example we will discuss lithium and sodium compounds containing multiple anions, in particular the combination of thiophosphate and halide anions or various MS 4 polyanions. Based on computational screening using our bond valence site approach and DFT studies several thiophosphate halides along the A 3 PS 4 -LiX (Cl, Br, I; A = Li, Na) tie line [4] and the A x (MS 4 ) y (M’S 4 ) z phase space [5] have been explored and their properties discussed based on BVSE pathway models and molecular dynamics simulations in combination with experimental (X-ray and neutron) diffraction, solid state NMR and electrochemical characterisation. MD simulations e.g. show that Li 5 (PS 4 )Cl 2 is found to undergo an order-disorder phase transition and thus should, contrasting to earlier predictions, not be a fast Li + ion conductor. The newly predicted thermodynamically stable cubic solid electrolyte Li 15 (PS 4 ) 4 Cl 3 was successfully prepared and characterized. Though its conductivity does not reach a superionic level, it demonstrates that the computational approach can successfully predict a completely new classes of solid electrolytes and can predict its optimization by doping. The simplicity of the approach also facilitates the study of homogeneity ranges as exemplified for the solid solution systems Li 4-x PS 4 I x (0<x<0.67) and Na 9+x (MS 4 ) 3-x (SnS 4 ) x (M = P, Sb; x ≈ 2). Direct Calculation of Li-Ion Transport in the Solid Electrolyte Interphase

Abstract:The mechanism of Li(+) transport through the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), a passivating film on electrode surfaces, has never been clearly elucidated despite its overwhelming importance to Li-ion battery operation and lifetime. The present paper develops a multiscale theoretical methodology to reveal the mechanism of Li(+) transport in a SEI film. The methodology incorporates the boundary conditions of the first direct diffusion measurements on a model SEI consisting of porous (outer) organic and dense (inner) inorganic layers (similar to typical SEI films). New experimental evidence confirms that the inner layer in the ∼20 nm thick model SEI is primarily crystalline Li(2)CO(3). Using density functional theory, we first determined that the dominant diffusion carrier in Li(2)CO(3) below the voltage range of SEI formation is excess interstitial Li(+). This diffuses via a knock-off mechanism to maintain higher O-coordination, rather than direct-hopping through empty spaces in the Li(2)CO(3) lattice. Mesoscale diffusion equations were then formulated upon a new two-layer/two-mechanism model: pore diffusion in the outer layer and knock-off diffusion in the inner layer. This diffusion model predicted the unusual isotope ratio (6)Li(+)/(7)Li(+) profile measured by TOF-SIMS, which increases from the SEI/electrolyte surface and peaks at a depth of 5 nm, and then gradually decreases within the dense layer. With no fitting parameters, our approach is applicable to model general transport properties, such as ionic conductivity, for SEI films on the surface of other electrodes, from the atomic scale to the mesoscale, as well as aging phenomenon.

Abstract:Solid electrolytes hold substantial promise as vital components of all-solid-state batteries. Enhancing their performance necessitates simultaneous improvements in their stability and lithium conductivity. These properties can be calculated using first-principles simulations, provided that the crystal structure of the material and the diffusion pathway through the material are known. However, solid electrolytes typically incorporate dopants to enhance their properties, necessitating the optimization of the dopant configuration for the simulations. Yet, performing such calculations via the first-principles approach is so costly that existing approaches usually rely on predetermined dopant configurations informed by existing knowledge or are limited to systems doped with only a few atoms. The proposed method enables the optimization of the dopant configuration with the support of neural network potential (NNP). Our approach entails the use of molecular dynamics to analyze the diffusion after the optimization of the dopant configuration. The application of our approach to Li MP S O (M = Ge, Si, or Sn) reproduce the experimental results well. Furthermore, analysis of the lithium diffusion pathways suggests that the activation energy of diffusion undergoes a percolation transition. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of NNPs in the systematic exploration of solid electrolytes.

Deep Potential generation scheme and simulation protocol for the Li10GeP2S12-type superionic conductors

Abstract:It has been a challenge to accurately simulate Li-ion diffusion processes in battery materials at room temperature using {\it ab initio} molecular dynamics (AIMD) due to its high computational cost. This situation has changed drastically in recent years due to the advances in machine learning-based interatomic potentials. Here we implement the Deep Potential Generator scheme to \textit{automatically} generate interatomic potentials for LiGePS-type solid-state electrolyte materials. This increases our ability to simulate such materials by several orders of magnitude without sacrificing {\it ab initio} accuracy. Important technical aspects like the statistical error and size effects are carefully investigated. We further establish a reliable protocol for accurate computation of Li-ion diffusion processes at experimental conditions, by investigating important technical aspects like the statistical error and size effects. Such a protocol and the automated workflow allow us to screen materials for their relevant properties with much-improved efficiency. By using the protocol and automated workflow developed here, we obtain the diffusivity data and activation energies of Li-ion diffusion that agree well with the experiment. Our work paves the way for future investigation of Li-ion diffusion mechanisms and optimization of Li-ion conductivity of solid-state electrolyte materials.
A Novel Method for the in Situ Determination of Concentration Gradients in the Electrolyte of Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract:An electrochemical method has been developed for the in situ determination of concentration gradients in the electrolyte of sealed Li-ion batteries by measuring the potential difference between microreference electrodes. Formulas relating the concentration gradient and the potential difference between the microreference electrodes were derived from the Nernst-Planck equation. The concentration gradients in Li-ion batteries are theoretically and experimentally proven to be linear at steady state under galvanostatic charging and discharging conditions. Based on this finding, both the diffusion coefficient of the lithium ions in the electrolyte and the diffusion overpotential related to the concentration gradient have been calculated. It was found that the concentration gradient is proportional to the applied current over a wide current range and that the obtained diffusion coefficient of lithium ions is almost constant. For the batteries studied in this work, the diffusion overpotential is already noticeable at 0.30 A and the limiting current is estimated to be 1.1 A, corresponding to a C-rate of 3.7.
Accelerated discovery of solid-state electrolytes using Bayesian optimisation

Abstract:Current lithium batteries do not fully meet the longevity and safety requirements of electric vehicles. Novel solid state lithium ion batteries could be a compelling solution to these problems. In this work we unravel some of these new materials with potentially high lithium conductivity by using a Bayesian optimization approach. This involves exploring the material space for new solid-state electrolyte materials with the objective of maximising - lithium diffusivity. The materials selected by the Bayesian optimisation algorithm are then examined using ab initio molecular dynamics to estimate their diffusion energy barrier. We establish that the materials are electronic insulators, a requirement in electrolyte materials, by computing the electronic bandgaps of each of the selected materials using a hybrid exchange method, and then examine the stability of the materials at the lithium metal anode interface by computing the crystal decomposition energies. Out of the selected materials, we find that Li3YBr6 has a reasonably low diffusion barrier, a high bandgap and is potentially the most stable material at the lithium metal interface. In addition to introducing stable and high-diffusivity solid-state electrolyte materials, our work presents a material discovery method that can be applied for a broad range of applications.

Molecular Dynamics of Lithium Ion Transport in a Model Solid Electrolyte Interphase

Abstract:Li+ transport within a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in lithium ion batteries has challenged molecular dynamics (MD) studies due to limited compositional control of that layer. In recent years, experiments and ab initio simulations have identified dilithium ethylene dicarbonate (Li2EDC) as the dominant component of SEI layers. Here, we adopt a parameterized, non-polarizable MD force field for Li2EDC to study transport characteristics of Li+ in this model SEI layer at moderate temperatures. The observed correlations are consistent with recent MD results using a polarizable force field, suggesting that this non-polarizable model is effective for our purposes of investigating Li+ dynamics over long time scales. Mean-squared displacements distinguish three distinct Li+ transport regimes in EDC ballistic, trapping, and diffusive. Compared to liquid ethylene carbonate (EC), the nanosecond trapping times in EDC are significantly longer and naturally decrease at higher temperatures. New materials developed for fast-charging Li-ion batteries should have smaller trapping regions. The analyses implemented in this paper can be used for testing transport of Li+ ion in novel battery materials. Non-Gaussian features of van Hove self -correlation functions for Li+ in EDC, along with the mean-squared displacements, are consistent in describing EDC as a glassy material compared with liquid EC. Vibrational modes of Li+ ion, identified by MD, characterize the trapping and are further validated by electronic structure calculations.

Diffusion-aware voltage source: An equivalent circuit network to resolve lithium concentration gradients in active particles

Abstract:Traditional equivalent circuit models (ECMs) have difficulties in estimating battery internal states due to the lack of relevant physics, such as the lithium diffusion in active particles. Here we configure a circuit network to describe the lithium diffusion and define it as a new high-level circuit element called diffusion-aware voltage source. The circuit representation is proven equivalent to the discretized diffusion equation. The new voltage source gives the electrode potential as a function of the surface concentration and thus automatically incorporates the diffusion overpotential. We show that an ECM with the proposed diffusion-aware voltage sources (called "shell ECM") can reproduce the single particle model simulation results, making it a trustworthy easy-to-implement substitute. Furthermore, the simplest shell ECM consisting of a single diffusion-aware voltage source and a resistor is validated against experimental constant-current discharges at various rates. The diffusion-aware voltage source can be used to measure diffusivity by fitting the diffusion resistance against experimental data. The viability of the shell ECM for onboard usage is confirmed by implementation into a battery management system of WAE Technologies. By tracking the internal concentration states, the shell ECM demonstrates robustness to dynamic applied-current profiles.

Abstract:The composition, structure, and the formation mechanism of the solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) in lithium-based (e.g., Li-ion and Li metal) batteries have been widely explored in the literature. However, very little is known about the ion transport through the SEI. Understanding the underlying ion diffusion processes across the SEI could lead to a significant progress, enabling the performance increase and improving safety aspects of batteries. Herein, we report the results of first-principles density functional theory calculations on the dominant diffusion pathways, energetics, and the corresponding diffusion coefficients associated with Li diffusion through the polycrystalline SEI. This paper is particularly concerned with the Li diffusion through the grain boundary (GB) formed between the three major inorganic components of the SEI, such as Li2O, LiF, and Li2CO3. Abstract:Stable and fast ionic conductors for magnesium cathode materials have the prospect of enabling high energy density batteries beyond current Lithium-ion technologies. So far, only a few candidate materials have been identified leading to data only being scarcely available to the community. Here, we present a systematic study, in the framework of Density Functional Theory, including the estimation of the diffusion barrier for 16 materials through employing Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) calculations. By introducing a path finder algorithm based on the idea of Voronoi tessellations, we show that an estimate of the transition state configuration can be extracted automatically prior to running NEB-calculations. Using geometrical descriptors in combination with a principal component analysis it is possible to further sub-group the diffusion paths. This approach also extends to materials which are not part of the study, making it a viable approach to more efficiently explore crystal structures with distinguishable diffusion characteristics.
