Abstract:Grinding, an essential procedure before flotation, to some extent, determines the flotation behavior of minerals. In this study, the effect of grinding media on the flotation behavior of fluorite using sodium oleate (NaOl) as a collector was investigated via micro-flotation experiments, zeta potential measurements, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The results indicated that, compared with the fluorite particles ground by ceramic media, the ones ground by cast iron media adsorbed less NaOl, resulting in lower flotation recovery. The lower flotation recovery of fluorite particles ground by cast iron media resulted from the coating of the hydrophilic Fe precipitates generated in the grinding, including Fe(0), Fe(OH)(2), and Fe(OH)(3) on their surfaces. These Fe precipitates may cover the Ca active sites and increase the hydration membrane which can inhibit the further NaOl adsorption. This research reveals the effect of grinding media on the flotation behavior of fluorite and guides for media selection in disposing of fluorite ore.
Decoupling the effects of solid and liquid phases in a Pb-water glass mixture on the selective flotation separation of scheelite from calcite

Abstract:In this study, lead ion was combined with water glass to separate scheelite from calcite using flotation. The effects and underlying mechanisms of the liquid and solid phases generated in this combined depressant (Pb-water glass, a mixture of lead ion and water glass) on the flotation performance of scheelite and calcite were investigated through micro-flotation experiments, X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer measurements, fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) analysis, zeta potential measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests. The flotation results indicate that the selective flotation separation of scheelite from calcite results from the liquid phase, not the solid phase. The XRD and FTIR results indicate that under different mass ratios of lead ion to water glass, the solid phases are the leadsilicate with amorphous structures, while the UV-Vis results reveal significant absorption differences in the liquid phases under different mass ratios of lead ion to water glass. The zeta potential and XPS results indicate that less metal silicate polymers are adsorbed on the scheelite surface than on the calcite surface, allowing NaOL to be adsorbed on the scheelite surface, but not on the calcite surface, and selective flotation separation of scheelite from calcite is therefore achieved. XPS results further reveal that the metal silicate polymers in the liquid phase are adsorbed on both mineral surfaces by firstly breaking the Ca-O group and then reacting with the Ca active sites.

Abstract:Grinding plays an important role in the beneficiation process. Different grinding media can determine the size distribution, shape, and even the surface properties of the produced material. However, comprehensive research related to the effect of grinding media on the flotation performance of cassiterite is lacking. In the current study, the effects on the flotability of the products obtained by grinding with ceramic and stainless steel media were investigated using micro-flotation, laser particle size distribution analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), chemical element analysis, zeta potential measurements, field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The micro-flotation results demonstrate that the flotability of stainless steel ground cassiterite surpasses that of ceramic. The laser particle size distribution test reveals that the two grinding media do not have a strong impact on the particle size distribution. The ICP-OES and chemical element analysis results identify the higher iron content in the samples and pulp of stainless steel ground cassiterite as the principle influencing factor. The zeta potential analysis indicates that the dissolved iron ions absorbed on the cassiterite surface results in a positive shift of the mineral surface potential. This not only reduces electrostatic repulsion but also increases the active sites of salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA) chemisorption. FESEM-EDS results demonstrate the rougher surface and higher iron content of the stainless steel ground cassiterite compared to the ceramic ground cassiterite, thereby increasing the SHA adsorption. The stainless steel grinding cassiterite was observed to alter the chemical environment of Fe species on the cassiterite surface via XPS analysis, with Fe2+ exhibiting a stronger reactivity and stability towards SHA compared to Fe3+. Thus, the stainless steel media ground cassiterite demonstrates an improved flotability performance compared to the ceramic equivalent.

Abstract:Flotation separation of scheelite from calcite remains a challenge because of the presence of Ca active sites on both mineral surfaces and of their similar physicochemical characteristics. In this study, the effect of Zn2+ and its addition sequence on flotation separation of scheelite from calcite was investigated via micro-flotation experiments, zeta potential measurements, solution chemistry calculations, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests. The Zn-water glass (a mixture of Zn2+ and water glass) exhibits a better selective depression effect on calcite than the water glass alone but is much less sensitive to scheelite flotation. However, when Zn2+ is added prior to the water glass, both scheelite and calcite are significantly depressed. The superior selective depression effect of Zn-water glass arises from the selective adsorption of the Zn-silicate polymer and Si(OH) 4 on the calcite surface, while the significant non-selective depression effect of Zn2+ added prior to the water glass is due to the adsorption of the hydrophilic Zn species on both scheelite and calcite surfaces.

Abstract:Pb2+ ions and water glass are commonly used as the activator and depressant, respectively, in the flotation separation of scheelite from calcite and fluorite in industry. The interactive effects of Pb2+ ions and water glass are rarely reported. In this paper, the effects of Pb2+ ions on the flotation behavior of scheelite, calcite, and fluorite in the presence of water glass were investigated through single mineral flotation experiments, zeta potential measurements, solution chemistry calculations, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests. The flotation results showed that at optimal conditions, Pb2+ ions could activate scheelite flotation and enhance the depression effects of water glass on the calcite and fluorite flotation compared with water glass alone. Solution chemistry calculations and zeta potential analysis indicated that after Pb2+ ions adsorption, water glass could strongly adsorb onto the calcite and fluorite surfaces and inhibit the NaOL adsorption, while on the scheelite surface, water glass could hardly adsorb and thus NaOL adsorption continued. XPS results further revealed that Pb2+ ions combined with WO bond to form the W-O-Pb2+ structure on the scheelite surface which could be the active sites for NaOL adsorption, while on the calcite and fluorite surfaces, the Pb-water glass polymers (polycondensation product of water glass and Pb2+ ions) and water glass combined with CaO bond to depress their flotation.

Abstract:Great progress has been made in reverse flotation of fine quartz, especially many new reagents were proved their excellent effects. However, the influences of complex flotation system on fine quartz flotation still need to be scrutinized. In this study, alkyl ether amine (Flotigam EDA-C from Clariant) was used as a collector for the flotation of quartz. It shows better collectability for the flotation of quartz at about pH 10.0 (+/- 0.2). The adsorption mechanism of EDA-C on quartz and the influence of calcium ions on the flotation of quartz were investigated by adsorption tests, zeta-potential measurements, FTIR spectra measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic and atomic force microscopy imaging. Results show that EDA-C adsorbs on the quartz surface in physical adsorption with no new products, changing its zeta potentials and increasing its hydrophobicity. Calcium ion concentration of 20 mg/L, 40 mg/L, 60 mg/L and 1 g/L can inhibit the quartz surface strongly and decrease its recovery sharply. Inhibition action of 2 g/L Ca2+ decreased, even disappeared when the collector concentration increased to 90 mg/L Calcium ions changed the chemical environment of Si atoms and Ols on the quartz surface. After positively charged CaOH+ adsorbed on quartz surface, the amount of EDA-C adsorbed on quartz surface and the recovery decreased. Abstract:In this study, the effect of bentonite and kaolinite minerals with low and high crystallinity on pulp rheology and the flotation of copper and gold minerals was investigated. It was found that clay minerals modified the pulp rheology depending on the type of clay minerals present. Bentonite, a 2:1 structured clay mineral increased pulp viscosity more significantly than kaolinite, a 1:1 structured clay mineral, and poorly crystallized kaolinite increased pulp viscosity more than well crystallized kaolinite. It was also found that pulp rheology modified by clay minerals was strongly correlated with copper and gold flotation. The higher pulp viscosity corresponded to the lower copper recovery. While high pulp viscosity was related to the decreased gold flotation, slightly increased pulp viscosity by clay minerals enhanced gold flotation. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A smart selection of grinding media not only effectively reduces the grinding cost but also optimizes the flotation response of valuable sulfide minerals. This review highlights the influences of grinding media on pulp chemical properties (dissolved oxygen, pulp potential, pH, and ion concentration), particle size distribution, surface morphology and species, and crystal structure of grinding products, as well as flotation performance of sulfide ores. In addition, the effects of electrochemical and mechano-chemical interactions between grinding media and sulfide ores are discussed in detail. Furthermore, a representative industrial application case on the replacement of grinding media is presented. Grinding products produced by grinding media that are less electrochemically active have higher pulp dissolved oxygen, higher pulp potentials, and smoother surfaces with fewer iron hydroxide species, which is beneficial to the oxidation and adsorption of xanthate on the surfaces of sulfide ores, thereby improving flotation performance. Ceramic balls and pebbles are recognized as the most promising grinding media for sulfide ores. This review aims to provide guidance for enhancing the recovery of valuable sulfide minerals based on selecting the appropriate grinding media.

Effects of the Crystal Structures of Three Calcium-Containing Minerals on Their Surface Characteristics in Flotation

Abstract:Significant differences in floatability were first observed for calcite, scheelite, and wollastonite with sodium oleate (NaOl) as a collector, even though these minerals contain the same cation, Ca2+. The surface characteristics of the three minerals were studied through zeta potential, contact angle, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrate that calcite, which has the highest zeta potential, largest contact angle, and highest relative calcium content on its surface, had the best floatability of the three minerals. In contrast, wollastonite, which has the lowest zeta potential, smallest contact angle, and lowest relative calcium content, showed poor floatability. All the surface characteristics of the three minerals can be attributed to the surface densities and surface unsaturated calcium bonds derived from rupture of the mineral crystals. The inherent flotation mechanism has been revealed, allowing the floatability of a mineral to be predicted based on its crystal structure. Additionally, the wollastonite crystal structure, which had seldom been mentioned in the literature, has been studied in detail based on its surface characteristics.
A potential ceramic ball grinding medium for optimizing flotation separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite

Abstract:Ceramic ball (CB) and cast iron ball (CIB) media were used in the grinding of chalcopyrite and pyrite (1:1) to investigate the influence of grinding media on flotation separation. The selectivity indexe values were 2.65 (CB) and 1.58 (CIB) under the optimal conditions. In the CB system, the concentrations of Cu2+, SO42−, dissolved oxygen, and pH in the slurry were slightly higher. The root-mean-square roughness (Rq) values of the CB and CIB systems ground products were 9.02 nm and 74.80 nm, respectively. Moreover, a large amount of FeOOH was formed on the surface of the CIB ground products owing to the electrochemical interaction between the minerals and the media. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that FeOOH was adsorbed preferentially on the surfaces of chalcopyrite and pyrite, thus severely hindering the adsorption of butyl xanthate. Therefore, the CB medium is beneficial for enhancing the flotation performance of chalcopyrite and pyrite.

Abstract:The structure and granularity of calcite were measured during dry grinding in a ball mill by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and laser diffraction, and its morphology was observed by a scanning electron microscope. During the early stage of grinding (0–10min), the median particle size and X-ray diffraction intensity of the calcite decreased, while the full width at half maximum increased as grinding progressed. During the middle grinding stage (20–300min), the grain size and crystalline degree of ultrafine calcite particles no longer changed with time; this was attributed to aggregation, which hindered the breakage of particles. During the final grinding stage (360–720min), a polymorphic transformation of calcite into aragonite took place.

Abstract:In mineral processing, sufficiently liberated target minerals by grinding is a prerequisite for successful flotation. Rod grinding produces particles with a narrower size range and better floatability through line contacts, but with a lower production capacity compared to balls (point contacts). As a result, balls remain as the preferred media for most dressing plants. However, balls produce many ultra-coarse and ultra-fine particles. Hence, grinding media with multiple contact forms could offer a compromise, which can combine the advantages of both rods and balls. In this paper, the performance of short cylinders which comminute minerals in point and line contact modes and ball grinding media were compared and evaluated using chalcopyrite as a test mineral. The grinding results show that short cylinders generate more angular particles with intermediate particle sizes and have a higher grinding efficiency compared with balls. Short cylinders selectively produce more active {1 1 2} surfaces of chalcopyrite, which possess higher adsorption capacity with collectors and were preferentially floated as the concentrate. Flotation tests confirm that the real ore particles ground by short cylinders have higher liberation degree and exhibit a higher flotation recovery of chalcopyrite than ore ground using balls. This study provides a reference scheme for the grinding and flotation optimization of valuable minerals.

Abstract:Sulphide mineral processing often involves grinding media and a number of types of sulphide minerals at various ratios of feed grades, but conventional studies on galvanic interactions for sulphide mineral processing often looked into dual-phase galvanic contacts with an equal surface area of anode and cathode. For the first time, this study investigated the galvanic interaction of a tri-phase galvanic system (GM-Cc-Py) consisting of grinding media, chalcocite and pyrite with different surface area ratios of pyrite to chalcocite (Py/Cc) to reflect the practical nature. The electrochemical studies found that chalcocite acted as a cathode in the galvanic system in the absence of pyrite, but it was switched to an anode after the addition of pyrite at Py/Cc = 1. An increase in pyrite surface area not only further anodised grinding media and chalcocite, but also increased the galvanic interaction and the oxidation of anodic materials. This nature of galvanic interactions was found to impact the pulp chemistry after grinding and also the mineral flotation behaviour. A greater pyrite surface area caused a more reducing pulp condition and higher chalcocite oxidation, both promoting copper activation on pyrite and then pyrite flotation. This study identified a high amount of pyrite recovered in copper mineral flotation at a high pyrite feed grade and suggested solving this problem by altering the cathodic role of pyrite.

Abstract:Wet grinding of calcified slag was conducted to improve alumina extraction from red mud by the calcification–carbonization method. The grinding operation conditions and mechanism were investigated. The results showed that wet grinding destroyed the compact structure of spherical hydrogarnet and broke down agglomerates. The rough surface of ground hydrogarnet promoted the formation of aragonite-type calcium carbonate, and then inhibited the formation of a dense production layer on the unreacted particles, which consequently improved carbonization efficiency and alumina extraction. Alumina extraction increased with increased rotation speed within the low speed range, and decreased dramatically over a critical speed. Prolonged grinding time increased alumina extraction until large particles comminuted. Both lower and higher liquid-to-solid ratios decreased alumina extraction due to the formation of adhered layers and the decrease of ball-to-powder collision probability. A smaller ball-to-powder ratio reduced ball-to-powder collisions, whereas excess balls caused energy loss during ball-to-ball collisions, which decreased alumina extraction.

Abstract:The effect of Artemisia sphaerocephala Krasch. gum (ASKG) on the flotation separation of fluorite and calcite with sodium oleate (NaOl) as collector was studied for the first time. Results of micro-flotation and artificial mixed mineral experiments proved that ASKG had a strong depression effect on calcite, but the flotation of fluorite was barely effected by ASKG within the pH range studied. Zeta potential analysis results confirmed an evident adsorption difference of ASKG, and the adsorption strength of ASKG on calcite was much stronger than that of fluorite. The results of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis suggested that ASKG hardly affected the chemical interaction between NaOl and fluorite, but the pre-adsorption of ASKG on calcite surface could further prevent the adsorption of NaOl. Meanwhile, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results indicated that ASKG could be adsorbed on calcite surface to improve the hydrophilicity by the strong complexation of hydroxyl (–OH) with Ca2+. Therefore, the flotation separation of fluorite and calcite could be realized due to the remarkable difference of NaOl adsorption by using ASKG as selective depressant.

Abstract:It has been well acknowledged that clay minerals could impose deleterious effects on flotation performance by affecting pulp rheology. To date, it is still not clear regarding the role of clay minerals in influencing froth rheology which has been increasingly recognized as an important froth property in determining flotation performance. Hence, this work selected three typical clay minerals with different characteristics to study their impacts on froth rheology: montmorillonite, kaolinite and talc. The results showed that the clay minerals showed different froth rheological behaviors with increasing the solids concentration in the feed from 1 wt% to 9 wt%. For montmorillonite, the froth viscosity decreased first and then increased, reaching a lowest viscosity at 5 wt%. The froth viscosity continuously decreased for kaolinite while it kept increasing for talc over the solids concentration in the feed. In addition, talc generated much more viscous froths than the other two clays. The different varying behaviors of froth viscosity among the three clays were related to clay crystal structure and surface hydrophobicity which ultimately determined froth properties. It is believed that the outcomes of this study could facilitate the flotation optimization of complex ores with the presence of clay minerals.

Abstract:In general, malachite is recovered via sulfidization–xanthate flotation, although many unsatisfactory flotation indexes are frequently obtained as a result of the presence of associated calcite. This phenomenon occurs because the dissolved components of malachite and calcite affect the flotation behavior of both minerals. In this study, the effect of the dissolved components derived from malachite and calcite on the flotation behavior and surface characteristics of both minerals was investigated. Flotation tests indicated that malachite recovery decreased when the calcite supernatant was introduced, while the presence of the malachite supernatant increased the recovery of calcite. Dissolution and adsorption tests, along with zeta potential measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry demonstrated that the Ca species in the calcite supernatant were adsorbed on the malachite surface, which hindered the interaction of Na 2 S with malachite, thereby resulting in the insufficient adsorption of sodium isoamyl xanthate (NaIX) on the surface of malachite. By contrast, the Cu species in the malachite supernatant were adsorbed on the calcite surface, and they provided active sites for the subsequent adsorption of Na 2 S and NaIX.

The marked ball wear tests showed that the wear rate could be minimized by a suitable combination of martensite and ferrite within the same ball. A ball composed solely of hard martensite exhibited increased wear under an oxygen environment, while balls composed of both soft ferrite together with hard martensite exhibited decreased wear due presumably to the difference in their passivation behaviors. The galvanic interaction between the two phases as well as among these phases and an electroactive mineral were investigated through electrochemical measurements under abrasive condition in a slurry. The rates of formation of passive film controlled the corrosion currents of the high chromium steel media. Corrosive wear and its effect on flotation are discussed using the passivation kinetics model thereby developed.

Abstract:The flotation separation of cerussite and calcite remains a challenge because their surface properties are altered by the adsorption of dissolved species derived from cerussite and calcite in the pulp environment. In this study, we investigated the adsorption behavior of dissolved species derived from cerussite and calcite using a series of surface analysis methods, including inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV), and zeta potential measurements. The change in the floatability of cerussite and calcite in the presence of the supernatant-containing dissolved species was verified via flotation experiments. A surface analysis suggested that calcium species in the calcite supernatant could adsorb on cerussite surfaces, thus decreasing the adsorption of Na2S and xanthate on the mineral surface. Similarly, the adsorption of lead species in the cerussite supernatant onto calcite surfaces provided an active site for the interaction of Na2S, thus increasing the adsorption of xanthate. Therefore, the dissolved species of cerussite and calcite would affect their floatability, i.e., the floatability of cerussite decreases and that of calcite increases, which greatly increases the difficulty of flotation separation of cerussite from calcite.

Abstract:The separation of fluorite and calcite during flotation is challenging due to the complex interfacial forces that cause capping of fine-grained calcite on coarse-grained fluorite. In this paper, the micro flotation test, Zeta potential test, contact Angle test, scanning electron microscope and E-DLVO theoretical calculation were used to investigate the combination of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and calcium lignosulphonate (CLS) to disperse calcite on fluorite surface. The test results show that SHMP and CLS alone cannot effectively remove the cover, but the combination of the two can achieve good dispersion effect. In addition, Zeta potential shows that SHMP can significantly enhance the electrical properties of mineral surface, while CLS has a negligible effect on it. The contact Angle test proved that CLS adsorbed on the surface of mineral enhanced the hydrophilicity and hydration force of mineral. E-DLVO theoretical calculation further proves that CLS can not only enhance the hydration force between minerals, but also generate steric hindrance effect. When the distance between minerals is less than 1.8 nm, the steric hindrance force is greater than the repulsion force of hydration, and the steric hindrance force plays a dominant role.
