Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) has been expected to be an effective way to reduce carbon emissions. Designing photocatalytic materials with long-term effectiveness is the key of photocatalytic technology. In this work, CoO nanoparticles loaded on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) membranes on silicon substrate were in-situ fabricated by one-step method. The resulting materials can convert CO2 into carbon monoxide (CO) up to 70 h at a steady rate of ~185 ± 30 μmol g-1 h-1 with a selectivity of nearly 100%. This material system contained rich oxygen vacancies and generated new oxygen vacancies during the photocatalytic process. Oxygen vacancies mediate the interactions with excitons: (i) promoting the dissociation of free excitons; (ii) leading to form bound excitons under the coupling effect with phonons, inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes as well as enhancing the long-term effectiveness of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. We hope this work can provide valuable insights for the design and optimization of photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Graphene-BiFeO3 composites are synthesized through a one-pot hydrothermal method and their photocatalytic performances are investigated under visible light irradiation. Bandgap engineering of BiFeO3-graphene composites is achieved by simply adjusting the concentration of OH groups during the hydrothermal treatment. XPS and Raman analysis indicate that enhanced coupling between BiFeO3 nanoparticles and graphene is achieved by the formation of Fe-O-C bonds, which is mediated by OH groups adsorbed on the surface of graphene. The band gaps of the composites could be successfully tuned from 1.78 eV-2.24 eV, giving rise to high photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation. This may be of significance in understanding the mechanism of the coupling between graphene and semiconductor oxides which are currently being intensively investigated as photocatalysts.

Abstract:BiFeO3/Reduced Graphene Oxide (BFO/RGO) composites have been fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis reveal that graphene oxide was reduced in hydrothermal process and BFO/RGO composites were successfully synthesized. UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence properties show that the introduction of RGO can effectively reduce the recombination of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. Compared to the pristine BFO, the photocatalytic performance of BiFeO3 Graphene Oxide (BGO) composites is enhanced for the degradation of Methylene blue (MB) solution under visible light irradiation, and the result shows that the optimal amount of Graphene Oxide (GO) in the composites is 60 mg (BGO60). The excellent photocatalytic performance is mainly ascribed to improved light absorption, increased reactive sites, and the low recombination rate of electron-hole pairs. This work can provide more insights into designing advanced photocatalysts for wastewater treatment and environmental protection.
Nanoscale p-n heterojunctions of BiOI/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide as a high performance photocatalyst

Abstract:Bismuth oxygen iodine (BiOI) is an emerging visible-light photocatalyst for water purification and contamination treatment. However, the performance of bare BiOI is restricted by the short lifetime of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Herein, nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (rGO) flakes self-assemble on the spherical superstructures of BiOI nanoplates via solvothermal reactions. The products are nanoscale p-BiOI/n-rGO heterojunctions with highly efficient visible light photocatalytic degradation activities. Optimum photocatalytic efficiency is obtained with ∼2.83% weight ratio of loaded n-rGO, and the activity increased by 2.1 times for removal of phenol and 1.8 times for degradation of rhodamine B over with bare BiOI. Experimental measurements demonstrate that the enhanced photocatalytic performance of p-BiOI/n-rGO is ascribed to the improvement in all three vital steps in photocatalysis: charge separation, migration, and recombination, which benefit from the built-in electric field of the nanoscale p-BiOI/n-rGO heterojunctions. Our method provides a cost-effective solution for high-efficiency visible-light-response photocatalyst.

Abstract:Photocatalytic technology has wide potential applications in the fields of energy generation and pollutant purification due to its advantages of low cost and environmental friendliness. Besides traditional photocatalysts of TiO2 and ZnO, the developing of new photocatalyst with novel properties of strong oxidation, reduction ability, and visible light response has received more attention. Bismuth compounds, such as BiOX (X=Cl, Br, I), exhibit highly efficient photocatalytic activity because of its layered structure and electronic characteristics. The special layered structure, resulting in built-in-field, is favorable for the separation and migration of photogenerated electrons and holes. Among BiOX compounds, BiOI has the best optical absorption characteristics in the range of visible light, and also has the best photocatalytic activity for the degradation of organic pollutants under visible light irradiation. Graphene is an ideal two-dimensional crystal with zero band gap and a high specific surface area. Many researches have shown that graphene can effectively reduce recombination probability of hole and electron because of its unique electron transport property, and it can improve the photocatalytic activity and light stability of the composite catalytic materials. In this paper, by constructing BiOI nanosheets and hybrid graphene/BiOI, the nanocomposite photocatalytic materials each with a high specific surface area and good photocatalytic activity are obtained. First-principle calculation based on density functional theory is used to investigate the electronic and optical properties of single/double layer BiOI nanosheets and their nanocomposites with graphene. Three kinds of vacancy defects, such as Bi, O and I in BiOI, are also considered. The calculated results show that the spontaneous charge transfer from graphene to BiOI takes place, forming electron-hole puddle because of the interface interaction between graphene and BiOI. Additionally, the hybrid graphene/BiOI complex displays an enhanced optical absorption behavior in the visible light region, improving its photocatalytic activity. The calculated results about the vacancy defects show that the Bi vacancy enhances the charge transfer between BiOI and graphene and forms more electron-hole puddles. In contrast, O and I defects restrain the charge separation between two layers and reduce the formation of electron-hole puddles.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is regarded as a limit-efficiency process in electrochemical water splitting generally, which needs to develop the effective and low-cost non-noble metal electrocatalysts. Oxygen vacancies have been verified to be beneficial to enhance the electrocatalytic performance of catalysts. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of reduced CoFe2O4/graphene (r-CFO/rGO) composite with rich oxygen vacancies by a citric acid assisted sol-gel method, heat treatment process and the sodium borohydride (NaBH4) reduction. The introduction of graphene and freezing dry technique prevents the restacking of GO and the aggregation of CFO nanoparticles (NPs) and increases the electronic conductivity of the catalyst. Fast heating rate and low anneal temperature favors to obtain low crystallinity and lattice defects for CFO. NaBH4 reduction treatment further creates the rich oxygen vacancies and electrocatalytic active sites. The obtained r-CFO/rGO with high specific surface area (108 m2 g−1), low crystallinity and rich oxygen vacancies demonstrates a superior electrocatalytic activity with the smaller Tafel slope (68 mV dec−1), lower overpotential (300 mV) at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, and higher durability compared with the commercial RuO2 catalyst. This green, low-cost method can be extended to fabricate similar composites with rich defects for wide applications.

Abstract:Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, I) exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity owing to their distinctive layered structures and suitable bandgaps. However, BiOX and its derived composites are usually fabricated via the liquid-phase strategy, which always produces waste liquid, thereby polluting the environment. Recently, BiOX/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with two-dimensional/two-dimensional (2D/2D) heterostructures have been successfully prepared without using any solvent by one-pot mixing/grinding using chemicals such as bismuth nitrate pentahydrate, potassium halide, graphene oxide (GO), and BH4K. The fabricated BiOX/RGO heterostructures were endowed with oxygen-rich vacancies and a very short fabrication time of 15 min. During the synthesis process, BiOX can grow in situ on the GO due to Bi3+ ions; thus, BiOX could be adsorbed easily on the GO surface, with the negatively charged oxygen-containing functional group. Significantly, BH4K not only reduces GO to RGO but also introduces a suitable concentration of oxygen vacancies (OVs) in BiOX, which can photo-induce the carrier separation efficiency and effectively improve visible-light absorption. BiOX/RGO with a 2D/2D heterojunction structure provided a higher specific surface area and a larger heterogeneous interface and transferred photogenerated electrons regularly. Owing to the dual synergistic effects of the aforementioned features, BiOX/RGO can produce more active substances (h+, •OH, and •O2−) for the photodegradation of organic pollutants. The results showed that the photocatalytic performance of BiOCl/RGO, BiOBr/RGO, and BiOI/RGO was significantly improved as the degradation rate of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation was 6, 3, and 2 times higher than that of pure BiOCl, BiOBr, and BiOI, respectively. Furthermore, BiOX/RGO displayed a similar enhanced photocatalytic effect on tetracycline degradation. Therefore, this work provides a versatile, green, and fast method to synthesize BiOX/RGO composites for the photodegradation of different organic pollutants.

Abstract:The van der Waals (vdW) integration enables to create heterostructures with intimate contact and bring new opportunities. However, it is not confined to layered materials but can also be generally extended to 3D materials. Multidimensional Bi2O3/BiVO4@graphene oxide (GO) van der Waals heterostructures are synthesized by one-pot wet chemistry method. Bi2O3/BiVO4 composite nanoparticles are self-assembled with GO framework by vdW interaction to form vdW heterostructures, in which GO framework allows short electron transport distance and rapid charge transfer and provides massive reactive sites. Such self-assembled heterostructures show a superior high photoactivity towards oxygen evolution with an enhanced oxygen generation rate of 1828 µmol h-1 g-1, nearly 3 times than that of pure BiVO4, attributed to the accelerated charge separation and transfer processes of Bi2O3/BiVO4@GO vdW heterostructures. This study indicates that our strategy provides a new avenue towards fabricating multi-dimensional vdW heterostructures and inspiring more innovative insights in oxygen evolution field.

Preparation of Reduced Graphene Oxide by Infrared Irradiation Induced Photothermal Reduction

Abstract:We present a green and scalable route toward the formation of reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) by photothermal reduction induced by infrared (IR) irradiation, utilizing a bathroom IR lamp as the source of IR light. Thermogravimetric analysis, Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm the reduction of r-GO by IR light. Ultraviolet-visible-infrared spectra indicate that adsorption of IR light by original GO films is less than that of UV and visible light; but when GO is exposed to IR light, its adsorption of IR light increases very rapidly with time. The influence of the power density of the IR light on the structure and properties of r-GO was investigated. At high IR power density, the reduction reaction was so fierce that r-GO became highly porous due to the rapid degassing and exfoliation of GO sheets. The r-GO powder revealed good performance as the anode material for lithium ion batteries. At relatively low IR power density, the reduction process was found to be mild but relatively slow. Crack-free and uniform conductive r-GO thin films with a volume conductivity of 1670 S m(-1) were then prepared by two-step IR irradiation, i.e. first at low IR power density and then at high IR power density. Moreover, the r-GO films were also observed to exhibit obvious and reversible IR light-sensing behavior.

Abstract:The efficient separation and transport of photogenerated charge carriers via the interface is crucial for the desired performance of the composite photocatalysts. Here we report a facile one-pot solvothermal approach to prepare reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-BaTiO3 (BTO) nanocomposites, where single- crystal and single- domain BTO nanoparticles were uniformly loaded on the rGO sheets. Such composites demonstrated a dramatic degradation performance of various organic dye pollutants under visible light irradiation. By systematically investigating the ferroelectric polarization, light absorption, charge separation and transport properties of BTO nanoparticles and rGO-BTO nanocomposites, the high photocatalytic efficiency could be ascribed to the synergic effect of ferroelectric polarization effect in BTO nanoparticles and superior electron transport of rGO on improving separation and transport of the photogenerated charge carriers. This work suggests that implementation of ferroelectric polarization effect in the composites would offer great opportunities to design and prepare high-efficient rGO-ferroelectrics photocatalysts for environment remediation.
Enriched Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation and Photoelectric Performance of BiOI Photoelectrode by Coupling Rgo

Abstract:Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) wrapped n-type BiOl hybrids for enhanced photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of organic pollutants is reported. The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images showed that the rGO was homogeneously coated on the surface of BiOl, forming a core@shell structure. Raman spectra, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses showed that an intense interaction was formed between rGO and BiOI, which could highly promote the photo-generated charge transfer rate and photoelectric conversion efficiency. It was experimentally demonstrated that the degradation efficiency of organic pollutants for PEC process was 40.6% and 62.7% higher than that of photocatalytic (PC) and electrocatalytic (EC) processes, respectively. Further analyses indicated that the improvement in PEC degradation of organic pollutants benefited from: (1) a strong interaction and a wide range of conjugation were formed in the hybrid system; (2) negative shifts for the flat band potential in case of BiOI@rGO composites. Abstract:Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) grafted W doped BiVO4 (WBVO) hybrids have been obtained using twostep wet-chemical approach. At first, WBV was synthesized by hydrothermal method in strong-acid condition. And second, the WBVO/GO mixture was transformed into WBVO/RGO hybrids by hydrothermal treatment under ethanol-water condition. The photocatalytic activity of WBV/RGO can be optimized by controlling the content of RGO at 4 wt%. Abstract:The most effective approach to develop new photocatalysts involves solar activation and prevention of the recombination of photogenerated hole–electron pairs. To achieve these goals, in this work, a series of bismuth oxyiodide and graphene oxide (BiOI/GO) composites were synthesized by a simple ex situ method. The structural, morphological, optical, and electrical properties of the synthesized compounds were thoroughly investigated. The photooxidation reaction of NO in the gas phase under visible light irradiation was used to assess the photocatalytic activity of BiOI/GO composites. The results showed that a small amount of GO significantly improved the photocatalytic activity. The BiOI/GO-0.5% sample prepared with 0.5 wt% GO showed the highest NO conversion (∼100%), indicating excellent photocatalytic stability after four continuous irradiation cycles and a high selectivity of 97% for nitrate ion formation. The increase in photocatalytic activity was mainly related to increased light absorption, high specific surface area, and better separation of light-generated charges. The use of chemical scavengers contributed to clarifying certain aspects of the possible photooxidation process of NO, which demonstrated that superoxide radicals ( ̇O 2 − ) could be the main factor responsible for the photodegradation of NO by BiOI/GO-0.5%.

Abstract:Bi2O2CO3(BOC)/Bi4O5Br2(BOB)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) Z-scheme heterojunction with promising photocatalytic properties was synthesized via a facile one-pot room-temperature method. Ultra-thin nanosheets of BOC and BOB were grown in situ on rGO. The formed 2D/2D direct Z-scheme heterojunction of BOC/BOB with oxygen vacancies (OVs) effectively leads to lower negative electron reduction potential of BOB as well as higher positive hole oxidation potential of BOC, showing improved reduction/oxidation ability. Particularly, rGO is an acceptor of the electrons from the conduction band of BOC. Its dual roles significantly improve the transfer performance of photo-induced charge carriers and accelerate their separation. With layered nanosheet structure, rich OVs, high specific surface area, and increased utilization efficiency of visible light, the multiple synergistic effects of BOC/BOB/rGO can achieve effective generation and separation of the electron-holes, thereby generating more •O2 − and h+. The photocatalytic reduction efficiency of CO2 to CO (12.91 µmol/(g*hr)) is three times higher than that of BOC (4.18 µmol/(g*hr)). Moreover, it also achieved almost 100% removal of Rhodamine B and cyanobacterial cells within 2 hours.

Abstract:We prepared unique BiVO4/reduce graphene oxide (BiVO4/rGO) nanocomposite with enhanced photocatalytic ability by hydrothermal method applying Bi(NO3)3·5H2O, NH4VO3 and graphene oxide as precursors. The physical and chemical attributes were characterized by various analytical techniques; X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrum analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photon spectroscopy, surface area Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyzer and photoluminescence. Methylene blue was used as a pollutant and degraded under visible light irradiation; the photocatalytic activity of BiVO4/rGO nanocomposite was observed 29% higher than the pure BiVO4 catalyst. The graphene enhanced the surface adsorption property and increased the charge separation efficiency of photo-created charge carriers; moreover, the photoactivity of BiVO4 increased considerably. The mechanism for the BiVO4/rGO nanocomposite was purposed and discussed critically, which suggests that graphene acts as electron trapper and tuning the bandgap energy led to superior photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Water oxidation process is a pivotal step of photosynthesis and stimulates the progress of high-performance catalysts for renewable fuel production. Despite the performance benefit of cocatalysts, defect engineering holds promise to settle inherent limitations of semiconductors aiming at sluggish water oxidation. Here, we modify the in situ growth pathway of monoclinic BiVO4 (m-BiVO4) on reduced graphene oxide (rGO), constructing abundant surface oxygen vacancies (OV)-incorporated m-BiVO4/rGO heterostructure toward water oxidation reaction under visible light. Owing to the OV in the m-BiVO4 component, a vacancy-related defect level allows more electrons to be photoexcited by low-energy photons to cause the electron transition, boosting photoabsorption as well as photoexcitation. Besides, the OV can reinforce surface adsorption and reduce the dissociation energy of water molecules. Particularly because of the synergy of OV and cocatalyst rGO, the OV functions as electron-trapped sites to facilitate the carrier separation; the rGO not only receives electrons from m-BiVO4 promoted by internal electric field over Mott-Schottky heterostructures but also spurs further electron diffusion along a highly conductive carbon network. These merits enable the OV-incorporated m-BiVO4/rGO heterostructure with an over 209% growth in O2 yield relative to the counterpart. The increased performance is also validated by the significant rise of •OH radicals and •O2- radicals. The current work paves a novel avenue for the integration of defect engineering and cocatalyst coupling in artificial photosynthesis.
