Abstract:Traditional water–gas shift reaction provides one primary route for industrial production of clean-energy hydrogen. However, this process operates at high temperatures and pressures, and requires additional separation of H 2 from products containing CO 2 , CH 4 and residual CO. Herein, we report a room-temperature electrochemical water–gas shift process for direct production of high purity hydrogen (over 99.99%) with a faradaic efficiency of approximately 100%. Through rational design of anode structure to facilitate CO diffusion and PtCu catalyst to optimize CO adsorption, the anodic onset potential is lowered to almost 0 volts versus the reversible hydrogen electrode at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The optimized PtCu catalyst achieves a current density of 70.0 mA cm −2 at 0.6 volts which is over 12 times that of commercial Pt/C (40 wt.%) catalyst, and remains stable for even more than 475 h. This study opens a new and promising route of producing high purity hydrogen.
Hydrogen production from formic acid decomposition in the liquid phase using Pd nanoparticles supported on CNFs with different surface properties

Abstract:The development of safe and efficient H-2 generation/storage materials toward a fuel-cell-based H-2 economy as a long-term solution has recently received much attention. Herein we report the development of preformed Pd nanoparticles supported on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) via sol-immobilisation and impregnation techniques as efficient catalysts for the liquid phase decomposition of formic acid to H-2. We used CNFs as the preferred choice of support and treated at three different temperatures for the deposition of Pd nanoparticles. They were thoroughly characterised using XRD, XPS, SEM-EDX, TEM, Raman spectroscopy and BET. We observed that the Pd particle size, metal exposure and CNF graphitisation grade play an important role in catalytic performance. We found that Pd/CNFs prepared by the sol-immobilisation method displayed higher catalytic performance than those prepared by the impregnation method, due to the smaller Pd particles and high Pd exposure of the catalysts prepared by the first method. Moreover, we have shown that the best results have been obtained using CNFs with a high graphitisation degree (HHT). DFT studies have been performed to gain insights into the reactivity and decomposition of formic acid along two-reaction pathways on Pd(111), Pd(011) and Pd(001) surfaces.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) is becoming the most promising candidate for the future sustainable energy systems because it is clean and regenerable. Formic acid (FA, HCOOH), one of the high-value products of the biological metabolic process and the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2), is considered to be the most efficient hydrogen supplier because it is nontoxic and easy to store and transport and has high hydrogen content. Herein, Pd-ZrO2 nanoparticles (NPs) immobilized in amine-modified mesoporous silica (Pd-ZrO2/SBA-15-NH2) with ultrasmall particle size (1.5 nm) and high dispersion are successfully prepared and applied as an effective catalyst toward the additive-free dehydrogenation of FA at ambient conditions. As a result of the synergistic electronic effects of Pd and ZrO2, the strong interaction between the Pd-ZrO2 NPs and SBA-15-NH2 substrates and the abundant basic sites originated from ZrO2 and −NH2 groups, the as-prepared Pd-ZrO2/SBA-15-NH2 catalyst possesses 100% hydrogen selectivity as well as unexpected catalytic performance with a high turnover frequency value of 1408 h–1 toward CO-free hydrogen production from FA at 298 K, which is even better than most of the effective Pd-based heterogeneous catalysts ever reported. Abstract:Hydrogen generation via Al‐water reaction promoted by special catalysts has great potential, which can provide hydrogen source for portable fuel cells. In this work, we use wet chemical reduction method to prepare a high‐activity Fe/AlOOH composite with better stability and demonstrate its usage as a catalyst for Al‐water reaction. It is found that Fe/AlOOH composite not only significantly promotes the Al‐water reaction but also shortens the induction time. The catalytic activity of Fe/AlOOH directly correlated with its active area, which, in turn, is closely related to the AlOOH:Fe molar ratio. In addition, increasing the weight content of Fe/AlOOH, reaction temperature, and the Al:water ratio improve the hydrogen generation performance of Al‐water reaction. Mechanism analyses show that water dissociation on AlOOH surface and galvanic microinteractions between Fe and Al promotes the hydration of surface passivating oxide film of Al particle, which improves the Al‐water reaction dynamics. The present work provides a new way to produce hydrogen from Al‐water reaction for portable devices.

Abstract:Facile production of hydrogen at room temperature is an important process in many areas including alternative energy. In this Communication, a potent boron-doped Pd nanocatalyst (Pd-B/C) is reported for the first time to boost hydrogen generation at room temperature from aqueous formic acid formate solutions at a record high rate. Real-time ATR-IR spectroscopy is applied to shed light on the enhanced catalytic activity of B-doping and reveals that the superior activity of Pd-B/C correlates well with an apparently impeded COad accumulation on its surfaces. This work demonstrates that developing new anti-CO poisoning catalysts coupled with sensitive interfacial analysis is an effective way toward rational design of cost-effective catalysts for better hydrogen energy exploitation.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogen (H 2 ) generation from natural biological metabolic products has remained a huge challenge for the energy arena. However, designing a catalytic system with complementary properties including high surface area, high loading, and easy separation offers a promising route for efficient utilization of nanoreactors for prospective H 2 suppliers to a fuel cell. Herein, selective dehydrogenation of formic acid (FA) as a natural biological metabolic product to H 2 and CO 2 gas mixtures has been studied by supporting ultrafine palladium nanoparticles on organosulfur-functionalized SBA-15 nanoreactor under ultrasonic irradiation. The effects of the porous structure as a nanoreactor, and organosulfur groups, which presented around the Pd due to their prominent roles in anchoring and stabilizing of Pd NPs, studied as a superior catalyst for selective dehydrogenation of FA. Whole catalytic systems were utilized in ultrasonic irradiation in the absence of additives to provide excellent TOF/TON values. It was found that propose catalyst is a greener, recyclable, and more suitable option for the large-scale application and provide some new insights into stabilization of ultra-fine metal nanoparticle for a variety of applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen is one of the most promising future energy sources due to its highly efficient energy storage and carbon-free features. However, the energy input required for a hydrogen production protocol is an essential factor affecting its widespread adoption. Water electrolysis for hydrogen production currently serves a vital role in the industrial field, but the high overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) dramatically impedes its practical application. The formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) has emerged as a more thermodynamically favorable alternative, and the innovation of compatible electrodes may steer the direction of technological evolution. We have designed Au-Vo-NiO/CC as a catalyst that triggers the electrocatalytic oxidation of formaldehyde, efficiently producing H2 at the ultra-low potential of 0.47 V (vs. RHE) and maintaining long-term stability. Integrated with the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), this bipolar H2 production protocol achieves a nearly 100% Faraday efficiency (FE).

Abstract:A highly active and stable non-Pt electrocatalyst for hydrogen production has been pursued for a long time as an inexpensive alternative to Pt-based catalysts. Herein, we report a simple and effective approach to prepare high-performance iron phosphide (FeP) nanoparticle electrocatalysts using iron oxide nanoparticles as a precursor. A single-step heating procedure of polydopamine-coated iron oxide nanoparticles leads to both carbonization of polydopamine coating to the carbon shell and phosphidation of iron oxide to FeP, simultaneously. Carbon-shell-coated FeP nanoparticles show a low overpotential of 71 mV at 10 mA cm–2, which is comparable to that of a commercial Pt catalyst, and remarkable long-term durability under acidic conditions for up to 10 000 cycles with negligible activity loss. The effect of carbon shell protection was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. A density functional theory reveals that deterioration of catalytic activity of FeP is caused by surface oxidation. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis combined with electrochemical test shows that carbon shell coating prevents FeP nanoparticles from oxidation, making them highly stable under hydrogen evolution reaction operation conditions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our synthetic method is suitable for mass production, which is highly desirable for large-scale hydrogen production.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic interface plays a crucial role in driving the water splitting reaction. Herein, we report a rational constructed interface of Fe-O-P hybrid nanorods co-catalyst playing a significant role in high-performance hydrogen generation from neutral water. It is worth noting that the FeOx/FeP hybrid structure exhibits remarkably low overpotential of 96 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with a small Tafel slope of 47 mV dec(-1) and maintains excellent electrolytic durability over 60 h, placing it at the forefront among the best hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts operating in neutral media. The increased Tafel value contributed by FeOx elimination demonstrates the important effect of the FeOx/FeP interface. Additionally, theoretical investigations reveal deeper insights into the FeOx/FeP interface: firstly, the FeOx facilitates the adsorption and dissociation of water molecules and accelerates the supply of hydrogen atoms in the Volmer-Heyrovsky reaction; secondly, the interface further optimizes the Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption at the FeP surface.

Abstract:Iron is the cheapest and one of the most abundant transition metals. Natural [FeFe]-hydrogenases exhibit remarkably high activity in hydrogen evolution, but they suffer from high oxygen sensitivity and difficulty in scale-up. Herein, an FeP nanowire array was developed on Ti plate (FeP NA/Ti) from its beta-FeOOH NA/Ti precursor through a low-temperature phosphidation reaction. When applied as self-supported 3D hydrogen evolution cathode, the FeP NA/Ti electrode shows exceptionally high catalytic activity and good durability, and it only requires overpotentials of 55 and 127 mV to afford current densities of 10 and 100 mAcm(2), respectively. The excellent electrocatalytic performance is promising for applications as non-noble-metal HER catalyst with a high performance-price ratio in electrochemical water splitting for large-scale hydrogen fuel production.

Abstract:Hydrogen with advantages of high energy density, zero pollution and zero carbon dioxide emissions is regarded as a carrier of clean energy for replacing fossil fuels. Therefore, the development of a high activity, selectivity and stability catalyst for H2 production remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a new Ag@AgPd x nanotriangulars catalysts via immobilizing Pd atoms onto the surface of Ag nanotriangulars, for H2 production from formic acid (FA) at room temperature, with superior catalytic activity and stability over commercial Pd/C and Pt/C. The in-situ DRIFT results shown the FA dehydrogenation process over Ag@AgPd0.8 nanotriangulars, first the HCOOH* was rapidly converted to HCOO*, and finally to CO2*, which explained the fact that Ag@AgPd0.8 nanotriangulars have high activity and selectivity for FA dehydrogenation. This strategy opens up a new way to design effective catalysts for efficient H2 production from FA dehydrogenation to meet the requirement and applications of fuel cell.

Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution of Nanoporous CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 for Water Splitting

Abstract:The spinels CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 of nanoporous photocatalysts were prepared by dealloying and calcination. The photocatalytic performance for the hydrogen generation rate via water splitting was measured. The results revealed that CoFe2O4 exhibits a sheet-like nanoporous structure and that abundant mesopores are distributed in the nanosheets. NiFe2O4 shows a typical pore-ligament structure. The measurements show that hydrogen generation is exhibited by both oxides because the bandgap of CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 is higher than the water oxidization potential. The hydrogen generation rate is approximately 0.088 mmol h d(-1) g(-1) for CoFe2O4 and 0.026 mmol h d(-1) g(-1) for NiFe2O4 when the TEOA (10 vol%) sacrificial agent is adopted. This performance is significantly higher than that of methanol as the scavenger because TEOA increases the pH value of the solution, changes the negative shift in the conduction band energy level and improves the electron transport efficiency. The higher performance of CoFe2O4 is attributed to its larger specific surface area, ample unimpeded penetration diffusion paths and higher electron transfer rate. Synergistic effect in ultrafine PtNiP nanowires for highly efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution in alkaline electrolyte

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts play an important role in electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction, which is a renewable and clean way to produce H2. Herein, we have successfully synthesized the ultrafine PtNiP NWs with diameter less than 5 nm via a simple two-step hydrothermal reaction method. Impressively, the PtNiP NWs exhibit one of the best electrocatalytic activity toward HER under alkaline conditions, which can reach current density of 500 mA cm-2 only at the -0.153 V vs RHE with Tafel slop of only 30 mV dec-1. The DFT calculation results show synergistic effect of Pt, Ni and P atoms, where Ni atoms are conducive to the adsorption of H2O and P atoms are helpful for the dissociation of H2O, significantly improving kinetic processes of hydrogen evolution reaction. This work could be instructive and meaningful to design highly efficient and stable HER catalyst in alkaline condition for practical applications.

Abstract:Sub-5 nm ultra-fine iron phosphide (FeP) nano-dots-modified porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) heterojunction nanostructures are successfully prepared through the gas-phase phosphorization of Fe3O4/g-C3N4 nanocomposites. The incorporation of zero-dimensional (0D) ultra-small FeP nanodots co-catalysts not only effectively facilitate charge separation but also serve as reaction active sites for hydrogen (H2) evolution. Herein, the strongly coupled FeP/g-C3N4 hybrid systems are employed as precious-metal-free photocatalysts for H2 production under visible-light irradiation. The optimized FeP/g-C3N4 sample displays a maximum H2 evolution rate of 177.9 μmol h-1 g-1 with the apparent quantum yield of 1.57% at 420 nm. Furthermore, the mechanism of photocatalytic H2 evolution using 0D/2D FeP/g-C3N4 heterojunction interfaces is systematically corroborated by steady-state photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved PL spectroscopy, and photoelectrochemical results. Additionally, an increased donor density in FeP/g-C3N4 is evidenced from the Mott-Schottky analysis in comparison with that of parent g-C3N4, signifying the enhancement of electrical conductivity and charge transport owing to the emerging role of FeP. The density functional theory calculations reveal that the FeP/g-C3N4 hybrids could act as a promising catalyst for the H2 evolution reaction. Overall, this work not only paves a new path in the engineering of monodispersed FeP-decorated g-C3N4 0D/2D robust nanoarchitectures but also elucidates potential insights for the utilization of noble-metal-free FeP nanodots as remarkable co-catalysts for superior photocatalytic H2 evolution.

Abstract:In this communication, we report the in situ formation of ultrafine PtO2 nanoparticles coupled with a Co(OH)F nanowire array (PtO2-Co(OH)F NA/TM) via a facile hydrothermal treatment. The PtO2-Co(OH)F NA/TM possesses interfacial synergy derived from its favorable composition and structure. It can greatly promote water dissociation and optimize the free energy of H* adsorption, indicating high catalytic activity towards the alkaline HER.

Abstract:Developing efficient and robust electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for the widespread application of hydrogen energy. However, conventional synthetic methods usually require high energy consumption and cost, and large-scale production at ambient temperature remains a challenge. In this work, we propose two facile room-temperature synthetic methods to fabricate Pt/NiCo LDH as an efficient cathode for enhanced HER. Theoretical calculations firstly predict that Pt/NiCo LDH shows optimized electronic structure, strong metal-substrate interaction, and balanced hydrogen adsorption/desorption. Subsequently, Pt/dNiCo LDH and Pt/eNiCo LDH with distinct but uniform nanostructures are obtained by electrodeposition and etching. Notably, Pt/dNiCo LDH exhibits ultra-low overpotentials of 26 mV and 91 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 with excellent stability in 1 M KOH, which is superior to Pt/C and most reported catalysts. Moreover, the Pt/NiCo LDH-based electrolyzers require low cell voltages (1.55 V and 1.53 V at 10 mA cm −2 ) analogous to Pt/C||RuO 2 (1.57 V) for overall water splitting. This study paves the way for designing and preparing high-efficiency HER electrocatalysts.
