Abstract:A simple, low cost, and green method was developed for the synthesis of water-soluble and well-dispersed fluorescent carbon nanodots (CDs) via a one-step hydrothermal treatment of potatoes. The as-prepared CDs exhibit a strong blue fluorescence, with a quantum yield of up to 15%. We further explored the use of these CDs as a novel sensing probe for the label-free, sensitive and selective detection of Fe3+. This is based on strong fluorescence quenching due to the complex formed between the CDs and Fe3+. The detection limit was as low as 0.025 mu mol L-1, and different concentrations corresponded to different sensitivities. The linear ranges were 1.0-5.0 mmol L-1 and 5.0-50.0 mmol L-1 at lower and higher concentration ranges respectively, and the recoveries of the spiked water samples were 93.7-101.5%. Therefore, the as-prepared CDs could meet the requirements for the monitoring of Fe3+ in environmental samples.

Abstract:A dual-mode colorimetric/fluorescence pH sensor was fabricated from carbon dots (CDs). It exhibited a pH response via both fluorescence and visible colorimetric observation. The CDs solution changed from red to yellow when the pH changed from acid to alkaline. Meanwhile, the color of pH test paper that incorporated the CDs changed from purple-red to orange and then to yellow. The CD fluorescence maximum was at 630 nm in acid solution and 590 nm under neutral and alkaline conditions. The fluorescence of the pH test paper changed from red to orange and then to yellow, which was better than that of the pure CDs solution. The CDs exhibited highly selective and reversible fluorescence quenching with respect to Cu2+ ions because of strong binding and fast chelating kinetics. There was a linear relationship between fluorescence quenching and Cu2+ concentration, suggesting the other promising practical usage of this sensing system. The versatile CDs-based pH sensor thus provides a basis for developing sustainable and fast-response dual-mode pH meters as well as Cu2+ sensing.
One-Step Synthesis of Nitrogen/Fluorine Co-Doped Carbon Dots for Use in Ferric Ions and Ascorbic Acid Detection

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have caught enormous attention owing to their distinctive properties, such as their high water solubility, tunable optical properties, and easy surface modification, which can be generally used for the detection of heavy metals and organic pollutants. Herein, nitrogen and fluorine co-doped carbon dots (NFCDs) were designed via a rapid, low-cost, and one-step microwave-assisted technique using DL-malic acid and levofloxacin. The NFCDs emitted intense green fluorescence under UV lighting, and the optical emission peak at 490 nm was observed upon a 280 nm excitation, with a high quantum yield of 21.03%. Interestingly, the spectral measurements illustrated excitation-independent and concentration-independent single-color fluorescence owing to the presence of nitrogen and fluorine elements in the surface functional groups. Additionally, the NFCDs were applied for the selective detection of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid based on the “turn-off” mode. The detection limits were determined as 1.03 and 4.22 μM, respectively. The quenching mechanisms were explored using the static quenching mechanism and the inner filter effect. Therefore, a NFCDs fluorescent probe with single color emission was successfully developed for the convenient and rapid detection of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid in environments.

Abstract:Fluorescent detection is a new spectroscopic measurement for ions sensing due to the advantages of real-time determination with high selectivity, accuracy, and low cost. However, chemosensors based on fluorescent detection are usually determined by absolute intensity from a monochromatic emission signal, which is easy to be fluctuated by the external environment, especially for Fe(3+)detection in complex fluids. Herein, we rationally design a dual-emission Eu3+: CDs@ZIF-8 to construct a ratiometric fluorescent sensor with self-calibrating ability for Fe(3+)determination. High efficient carbon dots (CDs) are embedded in europium ions (Eu3+)-doped MOF by simple stirring preparation at room temperature. The label-free ratiometric fluorescent probe (ICDs@ZIF-8/I-Eu) exhibits simultaneous blue and red emission under the same excitation at 365 nm. Remarkably, Eu3+: CDs@ZIF-8 displays the superiority of high selectivity to Fe3+, which shows ratiometric fluorescence characteristics (I-0/I) in a range of 0-6 mu mol\L with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.897 mu mol\L. Besides, the CDs-MOF nanocomposite holds good aqueous dispersibility and low cytotoxicity, which shows great potential applications in medical aid including biological detection and clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) have been identified as potential nanosensors and attracted tremendous research interests in wide areas including anti-counterfeiting, environmental and biological sensing and imaging in considering of the attractive optical properties. In this work, we present a CDs based fluorescent sensor from polyvinylpyrrolidone, citric acid, and methionine as precursors by hydrothermal approach. The selective quantifying of Fe 3+ and ascorbic acid (AA) are based on the fluorescent on-off-on process, in which the fluorescent quenching is induced by the coordination of the Fe 3+ on the surface of the CDs, while the fluorescence recovery is mainly attributed to redox reaction between Fe 3+ and AA, breaking the coordination and bringing the fluorescence back. Inspired by the good water solubility and biocompatibility, significant photostability, superior photobleaching resistance as well as high selectivity, sensitivity, and interference immunity, which are constructed mainly from the N,S-doping and methionine surface functionalization, the CDs have not only been employed as fluorescence ink in multiple anti-counterfeiting printing and confidential document writing or transmitting, but also been developed as promising fluorescence sensors in solution and solid by CDs doped test strips and hydrogels for effectively monitoring and removing of Fe 3+ and AA in environmental aqueous solution. The CDs have been also implemented as effective diagnostic candidates for imaging and tracking of Fe 3+ and AA in living cells, accelerating the understanding of their function and importance in related biological processes for the prevention and treatment specific diseases.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), a class of fluorescent nanomaterials, have attracted widespread attention from researchers. Because of their unique chemical properties, these high-quality fluorescent probes are widely used for ion and molecule detection. Excess intake of many ions or molecules can cause harm to the human body. Although iron (in the form of Fe3+ ions) is essential for the human body, excess iron in the human body can cause many diseases, such as iron poisoning. In this study, we have synthesized fluorine and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (FNCDs) by a hydrothermal method. These FNCDs exhibited good stability, selectivity, and anti-interference ability for Fe3+. Fe3+ could be detected in the range of 0.2–300 μM, and their detection limit is up to 0.08 μM. In addition, the recovery and relative standard deviation measured by the standard addition recovery method were not higher than 107.5% and 1.1%, respectively, indicating that FNCDs have good recovery and accuracy for Fe3+ detection.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have been widely used in recent years because of their excellent water solubility and abundant surface functional groups. However, compared with quantum dots or biological probes, the quantum yield of CDs is lower, and the fluorescence mainly concentrated in the blue-green range, which significantly limits the biological applications of CDs. Heteroatoms doping is the most common method to improve the luminescence of CDs. In this work, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped luminescent CDs were successfully synthesized by microwave assisted method using glutathione (GSH) and p-phenylenediamine (PPD) as raw materials. It can emit bright green fluorescence in ethanol solution, and the maximum emission wavelength is 535 nm when excited at 374 nm, and the absolute quantum yield is as high as 63%. Iron ion (Fe3+) can interact with the functional groups on the surface of the CDs to form CDs/Fe3+, which is a non-fluorescence complex, and Fe3+ can be reduced to ferrous ion (Fe2+). In other words, the reaction mechanism of CDs and Fe3+ is a combination of dynamic quenching and static quenching. The fluorescence of CDs quenched by Fe3+ can be restored by thiol, because there is a stronger binding force between sulfhydryl (-SH) on the surface of thiol and Fe3+, which enables CDs to be released. In addition, the CDs has good biocompatibility and stability, indicating that it has excellent potential in bioimaging. This discovery will expand the application of CDs in the fields of biosensing and imaging.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) represent a rising class of nanomaterials with numerous optical and physicochemical properties that make them useful for a variety of applications. In this work, three different methods, conventional hydrothermal carbonization (CHC), microwave-assisted irradiation and heating reflux reaction technique, were used as different bottom-up approaches to obtain different CDs. The carbon nanoparticles were prepared using three different carbon precursors (maleic, fumaric and adipic acids) and one nitrogen source (ethylenediamine). The CDs were characterized using different techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy, Ultraviolet-visible, Fluorescence and Zeta potential measurements. Both, the experimental method used to obtain the CDs and the different precursors, presented a considerable influence on the quantum yield values (QY), and also on the fluorescence emission curves. The molar proportion between the carbon and nitrogen source was varied to improve the QY, and one of the samples prepared by CHC method reached QY = 25.4%. The carbon nanoparticles obtained by CHC were used as nanoprobes for metal ions and exhibited great selectivity and sensitivity for Fe 3+ ions, reaching a limit of detection of 35 nM, which is lower than most reported values for CD-based PL method used as probes for Fe 3+ ions.

N- and O-Doped Carbon Dots for Rapid and High-Throughput Dual Detection of Trace Amounts of Iron in Water and Organic Phases

Abstract:In this work, we report a dual use of highly fluorescent N- and O-doped carbon dots (CDs) for rapid and high-throughput trace analysis of iron in water and organic phases. The CDs are rapidly synthesized in a sealed vessel via microwave irradiation within 5 min, and they exhibit high quantum yields of 80% with sensitive quenching responses to iron contents. Combined with a microplate fluorescence reader, a rapid and high-throughput assay for ions is further developed. The whole process from the CD synthesis to the detection output can be accomplished within 15 min. The limits of detection for Fe3+ in aqueous solution and ferrocene in organic gasoline are determined down to 0.05 mM. Furthermore, this method has been successfully used to determine the level of irons in real gasoline for quality evaluation. The results have an excellent agreement with atomic absorption spectrophotometric measurements. The CD-based facile assay with lower cost, use of less sample, and higher-throughput holds great promise as a powerful tool for iron detection in water and organic phase samples.

Abstract:A facile and rapid strategy was developed for the synthesis of ultrabright luminescent carbon nanodots (CDs) with tunable wavelength from 464 to 556 nm by introducing glutaraldehyde into the precursor solution under microwave irradiation. The fluorescence properties, including excitation and emission wavelength, quantum yield, and size of the CDs, were adjusted by changing the amount of glutaraldehyde and poly(ethylenimine). Several methods such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering, UV-vis, fluorescence, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to study the morphology and the properties of CDs. The luminescence mechanism was also discussed. In addition, confocal microscopy imaging revealed that the as-prepared CDs could be used as effective fluorescent probes in the cell imaging without obvious cytotoxicity. Moreover, a novel sensor for the detection of Co(2+) was proposed on the basis of Co(2+)-induced fluorescence quenching. These superior properties demonstrated the potential application of the CDs in cellular imaging and ion sensing.
Conjugate area-controlled synthesis of multiple-color carbon dots and application in sensors and optoelectronic devices

Abstract:During the heretofore several years, Carbon dots (CDs) have achieved the widely used in fluorescence sensing, optoelectronics and bio imaging owing to their distinctive photoluminescence attribute. Here, CDs with bule to red emission were prepared by solvent heat treatment of phenol-derived with regulation the reaction time in the synthetic system, and their fluorescence spectra ranged from 450 ∼ 650 nm. Characterization through variety of methods and density functional theory calculations clearly demonstrates that the achieve stable long-wavelength emission caused in solvent is mainly due to the increase in conjugate area and oxygen elements of CDs. Importantly, conjugate area and oxidation degree can affect the level of HOMO-LUMO, further changing the band gap leading to fluorescent red-shift. Because of their excellent photoluminescent properties, we examined the performance in detection of non-metal ions by green and yellow-color CDs. The results show that they have high accuracy and rapid reaction to ClO- within the scope of 0 ∼ 50 μM and 4 ∼ 44 μM, with response limits are 31.1 nM and 56.5 nM, respectively. Moreover, we also prepared CDs/PMMA films and CDs/epoxy resin films with highly transparent and stability. Subsequently, the white-light emission diodes (0.32, 0.31; ClE coordinate) was obtained through mixing CDs in a certain proportion. This study provides a novel platform for fluorescence sensing of multi-color emission CDs, and provides strong potential for new optoelectronic equipment.

Abstract:Carbon nanodots (CDs) of uniform size were prepared simply by the hydrothermal decomposition of folic acid (FA) precursor at various reaction temperatures. The CDs formed via dehydration of FA at 260 degrees C contributed the strongest photoluminescence (PL) signal and the highest quantum yield at about 68%, without assistance of any passivation agent. The effects of preparation conditions on PL behavior of CDs have been investigated in detail, and the quantum yield of the CDs was found to be associated strongly with sample crystallinity. Moreover, because the obtained CDs also exhibited high luminescence stability, abundant surface functional groups and good biocompatibility, there are many promising applications in printing ink, ion detection, pH sensors and cell imaging.

Abstract:The development of ratiometric fluorescence sensing platforms with simple synthetic routes and good anti-interference capacities are of great importance for their further application. Herein, hyperbranched polyethylenimine passivated carbon dots (HPEI-CDs) with concentration-modulated dual-excitation fluorescence property were synthesized. At a low concentration, HPEI-CDs only showed one fluorescence center, while at a relatively high concentration, its excitation peak around 355 nm would split into two peaks. Energy level splitting and broadening were demonstrated to be the origin of such dual-excitation behavior. Based on the dual-excitation signals, HPEI-CDs could serve as a ratiometric sensor for the detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solution. The assay exhibited a wide linear response concentration range (2-360 μM) with a limit of detection of 0.47 μM. Significantly, benefiting from the high concentration of HPEI-CDs, the sensor showed good selectivity and excellent anti-interference capacity. In addition, this nanosensor was successfully applied for the detection of Fe3+ in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract:A new carbon source (mint) is proposed to prepare carbon dots with excellent photostability and strong photobleaching properties by one-step hydrothermal method. The average particle diameter for carbon dots is 5.0 nm, emitting blue luminescence, and the quantum yield is 4.5%. Fluorescence can be obviously quenched in Fe 3+ solution. Further, A method based on fluorescence quenching of carbon dots for detecting Fe 3+ is established, which has a linear range of 0.5∼100 μ M with a detection limit of 0.104 μ M. This may provide an easy and sensitive method for iron detection.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon dots (CDs) have raised broad interest because of their great potential in the fluorescence related fields, such as photocatalysis and bioimaging. CDs exhibit different optical properties when dissolved in various solvents. However, the effects of solvents during the process of preparation on the fluorescence emission of CDs are still unclear. In this work, CDs were prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal route. Typical critic acid and thiourea were used as precursors. Through changing the volume ratio of water to N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF), we have obtained color tunable CDs, with the emission wavelength from 450 to 640 nm. TEM images, Raman and XPS spectra indicate that the particle size of CDs and the content of surface functional groups (C–N/C–S and C≡N bonds) increase with the increasing ratio of DMF to water, which results in the optimal emission wavelength red-shifted. The prepared multicolor CDs may have prospects in the lighting applications. Graphical abstract

Abstract:We report a method for the of coal-based fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) at room temperature using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and formic acid (HCOOH) as the oxidant instead of concentrated HNO 3 or H 2 SO 4 . The CDs have an excitation dependent behavior with a high quantum yield (QY) of approximately 7.2%. The CDs are water soluble and have excellent photo-stability, good resistance to salt solutions, and are insensitive to pH in a range of 2.0-12.0. The CDs were used as a very sensitive probe for the turn-off sensing of Fe 3+ ion with a detection limit as low as 600 nmol/L and a detection range from 2 to 100 μmol/L. This work provides a way for the high value-added utilization of coal.

Abstract:The authors describe strongly red-emitting carbon dots (CDs) which were obtained via microwave synthesis using phenylenediamine as the carbon source. The structural and optical properties of the resultant CDs are studied in some detail. The CDs possess (a) longwave emission (peaking at 620 nm under 470 nm excitation), (b) a quantum yield of ~15%, (c) a size of typically 3.8 nm; and (d) good photostability. The CDs have a pH-dependet response that covers the pH 5 to 10 range, and their fluorescence is quenched by ferric ions. The CDs can detect ferric ions in aqueous samples in the 0 to 30 μM concentration range with a lower detection limit of 15 nM. The CDs were also used to image pH values and ferric ions in E. coli bacteria. Graphical abstract The red-emitting carbon dots with high stability are synthesized which show dual response to pH-values and ferric ions in aqueous solution and biological media simultaneously.

Abstract:Ratiometric fluorescence probes based on multi-emission carbon dots improve accuracy and sensitivity on detecting various environment issues. Herein, a novel dual-emitting N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) was synthesized from citric acid and urea via a solvothermal method in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The blue and orange emissions of N-CDs in water were modulated, and pure white light-emitting with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.33) was achieved. The two PL centers behaved differently for Fe3+, Cu2+ and Ag+ ions, with the limit of detection (LOD) of ppm as fluorescence probes. Additionally, N-CDs displayed unique solvatochromism phenomenon. A new green emission appeared in organic solvents and gradually quenched with the increase of solvent polarity. The ratiometric PL displayed an excellent linear response for detecting water, and the LOD was between 0.003 % and 0.3 % in DMF, ethanol, isopropanol and N-methylpyrrolidone. Furthermore, N-CDs exhibited pH-sensitive response in the range of 4.0-7.0 and temperature-dependent response during heating-cooling cycles between 15 and 70 °C. A simple, efficient and reliable multi-functional ratiometric probe for detecting metal ions, water content, pH and temperature simultaneously was realized. However, there is a need for future application research to overcome the limitation imposed by the excitation wavelength of 330 nm.
Large-scale direct pyrolysis synthesis of excitation-independent carbon dots and analysis of ferric (III) ion sensing mechanism

Abstract:A one-step direct pyrolysis method without any post-treatment steps and a mass yield of up to 69% was realized for preparing N-doped carbon dots (NCDs). The NCDs exhibit excellent excitation-independent blue fluorescence with quantum yield (QY) of 65.5%, and their luminescence mechanism was explored based on optical properties and structural composition, which mainly originates from surface state photoluminescence (PL). The NCDs display highly selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ in tris-HCl buffer system, a good linear relationship between PL intensity ratios and Fe3+concentrations was obtained in concentration range of 0 to 400 μM with a low LOD of 0.703 μM. The formation of ferric hydroxide colloid is the main reason for the specific recognition of Fe3+ by NCDs, and buffer solution plays a key role in the formation of ferric hydroxide colloid and selective detection of Fe3+. The sensing mechanism is a dynamic quenching electron transfer process in the action of hydrogen bonding and colloidal adsorption. Three real water samples were applied to evaluate actual application of NCDs probe, satisfactory recoveries (93.5%–105.6%) indicate that NCDs has great practical potential for detection of metal ions in environmental water assays.
