Abstract:The Fibonacci word F is the fixed point beginning with a of morphism σ(a)=ab and σ(b)=a. Since F is uniformly recurrent, each factor ω appears infinitely many times in the sequence which is arranged as ωp (the pth occurrence of ω, p≥1). Here we distinguish ωp≠ωq if p≠q. In this paper, we give an algorithm for counting the number of repeated palindromes in F[1,n] (the prefix of F of length n). That is the number of the pairs (ω,p), where ω is a palindrome and ωp≺F[1,n]. We also get explicit expressions for some special n such as n=fm (the mth Fibonacci number). Similar results are also given for the Tribonacci word, the fixed point beginning with a of morphism τ(a)=ab, τ(b)=ac and τ(c)=a.

Abstract:A $4^-$-power is a non-empty word of the form $XXXX^-$, where $X^-$ is obtained from $X$ by erasing the last letter. A binary word is called {\em faux-bonacci} if it contains no $4^-$-powers, and no factor 11. We show that faux-bonacci words bear the same relationship to the Fibonacci morphism that overlap-free words bear to the Thue-Morse morphism. We prove the analogue of Fife's Theorem for faux-bonacci words, and characterize the lexicographically least and greatest infinite faux-bonacci words.

Abstract:This note is an attempt to attack a conjecture of Fraenkel and Simpson stated in 1998 concerning the number of distinct squares in a finite word. By counting the number of (right-)special factors, we give an upper bound of the number of {\em $k$-powers} in a finite word for any integer $k\geq 3$. By {\em $k$-power}, we mean a word of the form $\underbrace{uu...u}_{k \; \text{times}}$.

Abstract:The Tribonacci sequence 𝕋 is the fixed point of the substitution σ(a)=ab, σ(b)=ac, σ(c)=a. The prefix of 𝕋 of length n is denoted by 𝕋[1,n]. The main result is threefold, we give: (1) explicit expressions of the numbers of distinct squares and cubes in 𝕋[1,n]; (2) algorithms for counting the numbers of repeated squares and cubes in 𝕋[1,n]; (3) a discussion about α-powers in 𝕋[1,n] for α≥2 and n≥1.

Abstract:This paper is a sharp and focussed exploration of the Fibonacci substitution and the mathematical entity it gives rise to, the Fibonacci word. Our investigations are both of an algebraic and a geometric nature. Indeed, it is the combination of the two that gives this paper its overall character. The work is in four parts. Chapter 1 is a brisk tour of necessary basics; definitions, key theorems, and a number of techniques subsequently used extensively. A simple one dimensional drawing rule is investigated in chapter 2 with the aid of what is thought to be an original geometric figure that we will call a "deviation from zero diagram". A highlight of the chapter is its concluding elementary proof of a non-trivial result. Chapter 3 presents a two dimensional drawing rule. Although selected because it is amongst the simplest form possible, this time the object derived from the rule is a fractal. That this is so is proven and its fractal (Hausdorff) dimension calculated. This fractal is a (possibly previously unexplored) variant of that known in the literature as "The Fibonacci Fractal". By way of an overall conclusion, the last chapter, the fourth, suggests a few aspects of those preceding it worthy of further analysis.

Abstract:Given an infinite word, enumerating its factors is an important exercise for understanding the structure of the word. The process of finding all the factors is quite tricky for two-dimensional words. In this paper, two possible ways of enumerating the factors of the fixed point ($f_{\infty,\infty}$) of the sequence of Fibonacci arrays and a method for locating these factors in $f_{\infty,\infty}$ are explored. In addition, the factor complexity and the locations of the factors of the fixed point of Fibonacci sequence of arrays are also analysed.

Abstract:Let $\beta=\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$, $(a_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}^+}$ be a non-uniform morphic sequence involving the infinite Fibonacci word and $(\delta(n))_{n \in \mathbb{N}^+}$ be a positive sequence such that for all positive integers $n$, $\delta(n)=\frac{1}{\sqrt{5}}\sum_{j \geq 0}\epsilon_j\beta^{j+2}$ if the unique Zeckendorf expansion of $n$ is $n=\sum_{j \geq 0}\epsilon_jF_{j+2}$ with Fibonacci numbers $F_0,F_1,F_2...$. We define and study some Dirichlet series in the form of $\sum_{n\geq 1}\frac{a_n}{(\delta(n))^s}$ and relations between them. Moreover, we compute the values of some infinite series involving the infinite Fibonacci word.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) quasiperiodic Schrödinger equations have been studied by many authors in recent years (see for example [21]). In particular, much attention has been focussed on quasiperiodic potentials that are derived from the Fibonacci sequence, providing a. kind of prototype models for studying quasiperiodic systems. Starting from the Fibonacci sequence, some authors have proposed diverse generalisations [22]. On the other hand, the combinatorial properties of the Fibonacci infinite word are of great interest in mathematics and physics, such as fractal geometry, quasicrystals, number theory, formal language, computational complexity etc. See [1,3,4,5,7,11,12,13,14,17,22]. Moreover, the properties of the subwords of the Fibonacci infinite word have been studied extensively by many authors [3,7,13]. In this lecture, we shall present some new properties of the subwords of the Fibonacci word. This lecture consists of three parts. In the first part, after recalling some preliminary remarks on the Fibonacci word, we introduce the singular words and discuss their elementary properties. Then we establish two decompositions of the Fibonacci word in singular words and their consequences. By using these results, we discuss the local isomorphism of the Fibonacci word and the overlap properties of the factors, and we give a necessary and sufficient condition for local isomorphism. In the second part., we introduce the class of invertible substitutions which is a. natural generalisation of the Fibonacci substitution, and which is also an important, class of 1D quasiperiodic chains in physics [21]. We study first the group structure and local isomorphism of the invertible substitutions, then we study further the properties of the singular words of the invertible substitutions. In the third part we return again to the Fibonacci sequence.

Abstract:For every nonnegative integer $n$, let $r_F(n)$ be the number of ways to write $n$ as a sum of Fibonacci numbers, where the order of the summands does not matter. Moreover, for all positive integers $p$ and $N$, let \begin{equation*} S_{F}^{(p)}(N) := \sum_{n = 0}^{N - 1} \big(r_F(n)\big)^p . \end{equation*} Chow, Jones, and Slattery determined the order of growth of $S_{F}^{(p)}(N)$ for $p \in \{1,2\}$. We prove that, for all positive integers $p$, there exists a real number $\lambda_p > 1$ such that \begin{equation*} S^{(p)}_F(N) \asymp_p N^{(\log \lambda_p) /\!\log \varphi} \end{equation*} as $N \to +\infty$. Furthermore, we show that egin{equation*} \lim_{p \to +\infty} \lambda_p^{1/p} = \varphi^{1/2} , \end{equation*} where $\varphi := (1 + \sqrt{5})/2$ is the golden ratio. Our proofs employ automata theory and a result on the generalized spectral radius due to Blondel and Nesterov.

Abstract:Let u be a finite word and r be a positive integer, a power is a word of the form uu...u}rtimes . Particularly, a square is a word of the form uu . Fraenkel and Simpson conjectured in 1998 that the number of distinct squares in a word is bounded by its length. This conjecture was proved recently by Brlek and Li. Besides, a stronger upper bound for binary words was conjectured by Jonoska, Manea and Seki by stating that, for a word of length n over the alphabet {a,b} , if k is the least of the number of a's and the number of b's and k≥2 , then the number of distinct squares is upper bounded by 2k−12k+2n . In this article, we prove this conjecture by giving a stronger statement on the number of distinct powers in a binary word.

Abstract:Based on the combinatorial interpretation of the ordered Bell numbers, which count all the ordered partitions of the set $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, we introduce the Fibonacci partition as a Fibonacci permutation of its blocks. Then we define the Fibonacci-Fubini numbers that count the total number of Fibonacci partitions of $[n]$. We study the classical properties of this sequence (generating function, explicit and Dobiński-like formula, etc.), we give combinatorial interpretation, and we extensively examine the Fibonacci-Fubini arithmetic triangle. We give some associate linear recurrence sequences, where in some sequences the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds appear as well.

Abstract:If $u$ and $v$ are two words, the correlation of $u$ over $v$ is a binary word that encodes all possible overlaps between $u$ and $v$. This concept was introduced by Guibas and Odlyzko as a key element of their method for enumerating the number of words of length $n$ over a given alphabet that avoid a given set of forbidden factors. In this paper we characterize the pairwise correlations between the minimal forbidden factors of the infinite Fibonacci word.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that each non-degenerate Lucas sequence contains only finitely many terms which can be written as products of double factorials or as sums or differences of double factorials. In particular, we find all the solutions to the products of double factorials which are sums or differences of two Fibonacci numbers, and Fibonacci numbers which are sums or differences of two double factorials.

Abstract:Let $a, b\in \mathbb{N}$ be relatively prime. Previous work showed that exactly one of the two equations $ax + by = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ and $ax + by + 1 = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ has a nonnegative, integral solution; furthermore, the solution is unique. Let $F_n$ be the $n$th Fibonacci number. When $(a,b) = (F_n, F_{n+1})$, it is known that there is an explicit formula for the unique solution $(x,y)$. We establish formulas to compute the solution when $(a,b) = (F_n^2, F_{n+1}^2)$ and $(F_n^3, F_{n+1}^3)$, giving rise to some intriguing identities involving Fibonacci numbers. Additionally, we construct a different pair of equations that admits a unique positive (instead of nonnegative), integral solution.

Abstract:Denote by $\Sigma n^m$ the sum of the $m$-th powers of the first $n$ positive integers $1^m+2^m+\ldots +n^m$. Similarly let $\Sigma^r n^m$ be the $r$-fold sum of the $m$-th powers of the first $n$ positive integers, defined such that $\Sigma^0 n^{m}=n^m$, and then recursively by $\Sigma^{r+1} n^{m}=\Sigma^{r} 1^{m}+\Sigma^{r} 2^{m}+\ldots + \Sigma^{r} n^{m}$. During the early 17th-century, polynomial expressions for the sums $\Sigma^r n^m$ and their factorisation and polynomial basis representation properties were examined by Johann Faulhaber, who published some remarkable theorems relating to these $r$-fold sums in his Academia Algebrae (1631). In this paper we consider families of polynomials related to the Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials which naturally lend themselves to representing sums and differences of integer powers, as well as $\Sigma^r n^m$. Using summations over polynomial basis representations for monomials we generalise this sum for any polynomial $q(x)\in\mathbb{Q}[x]$, encountering some interesting coefficient families in the process. Other results include using our polynomial expressions to state some theorems of Fermat, where in particular, we obtain an explicit expression for the quotient in Fermat's Little Theorem. In the final two sections we examine these sums in the context of the three pairs of Stirling number varieties and binomial decompositions. We also derive an expression for $\Sigma n^m$ in terms of the Stirling numbers and Pochhammer symbols, leading to a seemingly new relation between the Stirling numbers and the Bernoulli numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the diophantine equation σ_2(n)-n^2=An+B. We prove that except for finitely many computable solutions, all the solutions to this equation with (A,B)=(L_2m,F_2m^2-1) are n=F_2k+1F_2k+2m+1, where both F_2k+1 and F_2k+2m+1 are Fibonacci primes. Meanwhile, we show that the twin primes conjecture holds if and only if the equation σ_2(n)-n^2=2n+5 has infinitely many solutions.
