Abstract:In this work, based on first principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulation, we systematically investigated the VS2/blue phosphorene (BlueP) heterostructures as potential anodes for LIBs. Our results show that both H-VS2/BlueP and T-VS2/BlueP heterostructures exhibit metallic characteristics, ensuring good electrical conductivity for the fast electron transport. The Young's moduli (187.3 N/m for H-VS2/BlueP and 183.4 N/m for T-VS2/BlueP), mechanical flexibility (ultimate strains > 16%) and adsorption energy of VS2/BlueP heterostructures are remarkably improved in comparison with pristine BlueP. Such improved mechanical property and adsorption energy are of great significance to suppress the anode pulverization on the whole lithium intercalation–deintercalation process. Moreover, the specific capacities of VS2/BlueP heterostructures are up to 1211.34 mA h/g (multi-layer Li adsorption), which are much higher than pristine BlueP and commercial graphite anodes. In addition, diffusion barriers in the H-VS2/BlueP and T-VS2/BlueP heterostructures are 0.17, 0.16 eV, respectively, implying high mobility of Li. All these encouraging results indicate that VS2/BlueP heterostructures are promising anodes to achieve advanced LIBs.

Abstract:Blue phosphorene has triggered enormous research effort as an anode for Li-ion batteries due to its large surface and high capacity. However, its application is hindered by poor electrical conductivity, mechanical properties and mobility. Graphdiyne exhibits excellent mechanical properties and high storage capacity but low Li-ion mobility. Herein, we designed blue phosphorene/graphdiyne (BlueP/GDY) heterostructure as a potential anode material for LIB based on denstity functional theory. We demonstrated that BlueP/GDY heterostructure exhibits good thermodynamics stability and enhanced elastic stiffness (Young's modulus is 215.9 N/m), which can effectively avoid electrode cracking and pulverization. Synergistic effect between BlueP and GDY significantly enhanced binding strength of Li for composite compared with isolated BlueP and GDY. The transition of semiconducting to metallic induced by Li intercalation suggested better metallic conductivity for fast electron transport. Furthermore, BlueP/GDY heterostructure delivers high theoretical specific capacity (761.76 mA·h·g −1 ) and rather small Li-ion diffusion energy barriers (0.11 eV), which is estimated to be 10 5 times faster than that on isolated BlueP and GDY at room temperature, indicating excellent rate performance for BlueP/GDY anode. Therefore, it is expected that BlueP/GDY heterostructure has great potential in LIBs with excellent mechanical stability, good electrical conductivity, high capacity and fast Li-ion mobility.

Abstract:Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure-based electrodes have invoked tremendous research interest due to their intriguing properties and their capability to break the limitations of the restricted properties of single-material systems. Herein, based on first-principles approaches, we propose that the black phosphorene/blue phosphorene (BLK-P/BLE-P) vdW heterostructure can be a capable anode material for power-driving lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), as it exhibits a large theoretical capacity, together with a relatively strong binding strength compared with the individual BLK-P and BLE-P monolayers. Our calculation results show that the Li adatom prefers to intercalate into the interlayer of the BLK-P/BLE-P vdW heterostructure due to the synergistic interfacial effect, resulting in a high binding strength and a diffusivity comparable to the BLK-P and BLE-P monolayers. Subsequently, the theoretical specific capacity is found to be as high as 552.8 mA h g-1, which can be attributed to the much higher storage capacity of Li adatoms in the BLK-P/BLE-P vdW heterostructure. Furthermore, electronic structure calculations reveal that a large amount of charge transfer assists in semiconductor to metallic transition upon lithiation, which would ensure good electrical conductivity. These simulations prove that the BLK-P/BLE-P heterostructure has great potential in LIBs and is essential for future battery design.

Abstract:Blue phosphorene (blue-P) possesses superior adsorption capability to Li/Na atoms and its puckered graphene-like surface can provide sufficient space for Li/Na storage. However, its wide bandgap, low stiffness and chemical sensitivity restrict its further application as anode in Li/Na-ion batteries (LIBs/NIBs). Recently, the novel C3N monolayer with great mechanical, thermodynamic and electrical properties has been synthesized. Thus, we construct the C3N/blue-P (C3N/P) heterostructure consisting of C3N monolayer and blue-P monolayer to overcome the inherent defects in blue-P. The geometric, mechanical, electronic and electrochemical properties of C3N/P as anode material in LIBs/NIBs have been systematically studied by the first-principle computations. Our computations show that compared with blue-P monolayer, the C3N/P has better mechanical properties, lower band gap and stronger adsorption energy for Li/Na. Furthermore, it is predicted that the C3N/P has low diffusion barriers of 0.17 and 0.10 eV, low open circuit voltage of 0.54 and 0.35 V and high theoretical specific capacities 333 and 658 mAh/g for Li and Na, respectively. All of these characteristics ensure that the C3N/P could serve as an ideal anode material for LIBs/NIBs, especially for NIBS.

Abstract:Properties of ZnS/graphene, such as formation energy of the Li adatom, activation energy for Li diffusion, pseudocapacity-like storage, and density of state (DOS), render ZnS/graphene a suitable anode material for a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Lithium storage sites, migration paths, electronic conductivity, and storage sequence of lithium ions are clarified. Lithium ions preferentially embed the ZnS/graphene heterostructure interface and the surface of ZnS and then intercalate into the bulk phase of ZnS. In the ZnS bulk, Li ions diffuse by the T–O–T path, and the activation energy diseases with volume expanded. LiS4 and ZnS2 are produced with ZnS lithiation, besides Li x Zn and Li2S. Moreover, it is proven that the capacity of ZnS/graphene more than the sum of ZnS and graphene originates from the interfacial lithium storage via the pseudocapacity-like storage mechanism. Therefore, further increasing the contact area between ZnS and graphene could promote the capacity by reducing the ZnS particle size.

The stable interface formed by C-O covalent bonds not only improves the structural stability but also makes the hybrid structure more conductive than the semiconducting SnO2. The calculated binding energies and diffusion barriers show that Li tends to insert into the interface, and a new pathway along the SnO2(110) direction for Li rapid diffusion with a low barrier is found.

Abstract:Carbon allotropes are widely used as anode materials in Li batteries, with graphite being commercially successful. However, the limited capacity and cycling stability of graphite impede further advancement and hinder the development of electric vehicles. Herein, through first principles computations, we proposed holey penta-hexagonal graphene (HPhG) as a potential anode material, achieved through active site designing. Due to the internal electron accumulation from π-bond, HPhG follows a single-layer adsorption mechanism on each side of the nanosheet, enabling a high theoretical capacity of 1094 mAh/g without the risk of vertical dendrite growth. HPhG also exhibits a low open circuit voltage of 0.29 V and a low ion migration barrier of 0.32 eV. Notably, during the charge/discharge process, the lattice only expands slightly by 1.1%, indicating excellent structural stability. This work provides valuable insights into anode material design and presents HPhG as a promising two-dimensional material for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Blue phosphorene (BlueP) is an exceptional anode material for metal-ion batteries (MIBs) because of its fast ion diffusion and high capacity; nevertheless, the low electronic conductivity and high chemical sensitivity have severely limited its practical application in MIBs. Coincidentally, 2D transition metal borides (MBenes) exhibit good mechanical stability and high conductivity, which can overcome the drawbacks of BlueP. Herein, we proposed Ti2BT2 (T=F, Cl and Br) monolayers as protective layers to boost the electrochemical performance of BlueP. Based on the first principles calculation results, it is found that the designed BlueP/Ti2BT2 heterostructures are thermally, dynamically and mechanically stable. Due to the synergetic effect between BlueP and Ti2BT2, their Young’s moduli (>230 N/m) are greatly improved. Moreover, all three heterostructures have low ion diffusion barriers (380.98 mA h/g for Li and > 326.55 mA h/g for Na) further demonstrate that the three heterostructures are appealing anodes of lithium/sodium-ion batteries. Our work not only reports three promising anodes for MIBs but also enriches the BlueP-based heterostructures.

Abstract:Borophene has received much attention due to its unique structure and electronic properties. However, the application of borophene has been limited by the template effect of the growth metal substrate. A stable borophene/graphene (B/G) heterostructure is designed and prepared by the resonance ball milling method and one‐step molding strategy to realize the application of borophene in the lithium‐ion battery for the first time. Graphene serves as a supporting substrate for borophene, and the B/G anode has a better specific capacity and rate performance than the reduced graphene (G) oxide skeleton. By comparing the electrochemical performance of boron powder samples under different ball milling times, it is found that the anode of B/G heterostructure with 6 h boron powder has the largest specific capacity of 192.3 mAh g–1, which is 39% higher than that of the graphene framework. Oxidation functional groups on the surface of borophene are beneficial for the rate performance of the anode. And the influence of the surface functional groups of borophene are analyzed on the diffusion performance through the first principles. It is believed that the B/G has potential for further applications in the field of lithium‐ion batteries.
Structural, Electronic, and Transport Properties of Phosphorene–Graphene Lateral Heterostructure Anodes: Insights from First-Principles Calculations

Abstract:Edge reconstruction is a major challenge for the application of black phosphorus nanosheets as anodes of lithium-ion batteries. Recently, it was reported that a lateral heterostructure of black phosphorus flakes linked with graphite flakes as an anode material is capable of operating under high rate and high capacity. This raises some interesting problems concerning the geometry, P-C bonding property, and transport property of the heterostructure. In this paper, we first demonstrated energetically the stability of the phosphorene-graphene lateral heterostructure (BP-G) employing first-principles calculations. Furthermore, it is further revealed that the phosphorus and carbon atoms of the BP-G are strongly bonded by sp(2)-hybridized mode, and the electronic conductivity of the combined system is significantly improved compared with that of isolated phosphorene. Besides, it is found that BP-G allows strong Li adsorption, offering a theoretical specific capacity higher than or similar to graphite and phosphorene. Li migration from the interface to phosphorene side is confirmed to be fast along the zigzag direction, owing to a low barrier of , similar to 0.12 eV, which is much lower than that of edge reconstructed phosphorene. These results give an underlying explanation to the performance of the BP-G as an anode of lithium-ion batteries.

In this study, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate the structural stability, electronic properties, and ion diffusion behaviors of 2D graphene/C2N lateral heterostructures. Three species of (5, 26), (11, 26), and (17, 26) heterostructures are chosen to explore the effects of graphene components on electronic properties. The results show that graphene/C2N lateral heterostructures exhibit good dynamic stability due to a small lattice mismatch and strong chemical interaction at the heterojunction interface. By introducing zero-gap graphene, these heterostructures acquire good electronic conductivity with small direct band gaps. The component ratio of graphene can significantly tune the band gap, showing a monotonic decrease as the ratio increases. Moreover, the introduction of C2N components can greatly improve the lithium capacities of heterostructures. Small diffusion energy barriers (0.257-0.273 eV) and a low average operating voltage of 0.758 V are observed in graphene/C2N heterostructures. The effects of graphene components and valence states on Li migration are discussed. Our results demonstrate that the graphene/C2N lateral heterostructure can effectively combine the advantages of graphene and the C2N monolayer, showing great promise as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries.
Hexagonal Boron Nitride/Blue Phosphorene Heterostructure As a Promising Anode Material for Li/Na-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Blue phosphorene (blue-P), an allotrope of black phosphorene, is prone to oxidize under ambient conditions, which significantly hinders its incorporation in anode for Li/Na ion batteries (LIBs/NIBs). Combining blue-P and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) together to construct h-BN/blue-P heterostructure (BN/P) can break the limitation of the restricted properties of blue-P. By means of first-principles computations, we explored the potential of using BN/P as anode material for LIBs/NIBs. Our computations show that the adsorption energies of Li/Na in BN/P are stronger than those in blue-P. Interestingly, although Li has similar chemical properties to Na, their the most energetically favorable sites on BN/P are different. Li prefers to insert into the interlayer of BN/P while Na prefers to absorb on the blue-P surface of BN/P. Furthermore, BN/P can achieve high theoretical specific capacities 801 and 541 mAh/g and low diffusion barriers 0.08 and 0.07 eV for LIBs and NIBs, respectively. All these characteristics suggest that the BN/P could be an ideal candidate used as promising anode material for high-performance LIBs/NIBs.
The Potential Application of Phosphorene As an Anode Material in Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:The capacity and stability of the constituent electrodes critically determine the performance of Li-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, density functional theory is employed to explore the potential application of the recently synthesized two dimensional phosphorene as an electrode material in LIBs. Our results show that Li atoms can bind strongly with the phosphorene monolayer and double layer with significant electron transfer. Besides, the structure of phosphorene is not influenced much by lithiation and the volume change is only 0.2%. After lithiation, a semiconductor-to-conductor transition is observed. The diffusion barrier values of Li are calculated to be 0.76 and 0.72 eV on monolayer and double layer phosphorene, respectively. We further demonstrate that the theoretical specific capacity of the phosphorene monolayer is 432.79 mA h g(-1), which is larger than those of other commercial anode materials. The influence of Si and S implantation is also examined and our results indicate that Si-doped phosphorene greatly improves the binding of Li atoms, while the diffusion barrier is not affected. Our findings show that the high capacity, low open circuit voltage, small volume change and electrical conductivity of lithiated phosphorene make it a good candidate for application as an electrode material in batteries.

Abstract:In this work, using first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated the geometric and electronic properties of heterostructures composed of two different structures, i.e., M2CO2 (M = Sc, Ti, V) and B-doped graphene (BDG), and further investigated their Li storage mechanisms and properties. Our results show that an obvious electron transfer occurs between the interfaces of the heterostructure, which is determined by the difference of the work function between the individual structures. Compared with the individual structures, the adsorption of Li on the heterostructures was enhanced, and the theoretical capacitance was found to have increased accordingly. We propose two mechanisms that explain these behaviors, i.e., the effect of electron transfer between heterostructure interfaces, and the synergistic adsorption effect with the upper and lower individual layers. In addition, we also found that B-doping of the graphene layer enhanced the Li adsorption and reduced the Li diffusion energy barrier in the heterostructure. These findings provide valuable insights into the development and application of heterostructures for lithium-ion battery applications.

Abstract:Borophene has been predicted to be a potential anode material of lithium-ion batteries because of its high specific capacity, high mechanical strength, and low diffusion barrier. However, borophene cannot be stable without metal substrates, impeding the industrial applications. Hence, using first-principles calculations, we proposed to form van der Waals heterostructures to improve the stability of monocomponent borophene and found graphene to be an alternative substrate for stabilizing borophene as a borophene/graphene (B/G) heterostructure. We find that B/G has a high adsorption energy of Li (-2.959 eV) and a high theoretical specific capacity (1469.35 mA h/g). Also, systematic climbing-image nudged elastic band calculations show that B/G has a low diffusion barrier (0.613 eV), and these properties change with the interlayer distance of B/G, theoretical specific capacity increasing to 1763.22 mA h/g, and diffusion barrier decreasing to 0.353 eV. Our results demonstrate that B/G is a promising anode material and that the electrochemical performance can be changed by adjusting the interlayer
First principles theoretical of designing Sandwich-like Metallic BP4 Monolayer as Anode for Alkali Metal-ion Batteries

Abstract:Phosphorene has been widely used as anode material for batteries. However, the huge volume change during charging and discharging process, the semiconductor properties, and the high open circuit voltage limit its application. Based on this, by introducing the electron-deficient boron atoms into blue phosphorene, we proposed a P-rich sandwich-like BP4 monolayer by density functional theory calculation and particle swarm optimization. The BP4 monolayer shows good thermodynamic and dynamic stability, as well as chemical stability in O2 atmosphere, mainly due to the strengthened P-P bond of the outer layer by the middle boron atoms adopting sp3 hybridization. According to the band structure, the BP4 monolayer shows metallic property, which is beneficial to electron conductivity. Furthermore, compared with blue phosphorene and black phosphorene, the P-rich BP4 monolayer shows higher theoretical capacity for Li, Na, and K of 1193.90, 1119.28, and 397.97 mA·h·g-1, respectively. The lattice constant of BP4 monolayer increases only 3.73 (Li), 2.52 (Na) after Li/Na fully adsorbed on the anode. More importantly, the wettability of BP4 monolayer in the electrolyte is comparable to that of graphene. These findings show that the stable sandwich-like BP4 monolayer has potential as a lightweight anode material.
