Abstract:The copper-catalyzed sulfenylation of indoles with aryl iodide and sulfur powder has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. This protocol provides a direct and facile approach to prepare 3-sulfenylindoles with moderate to excellent yields and good functional-group tolerance. The in-situ IR analysis provided evidence for that NaOAc could promote the synthesis of diphenyl disulfide by the coupling of aryl iodide and sulfur powder. According to DFT calculations, the coupling pathway involving the intermediate N-methyl-3-iodoindole is more favored than the direct coupling by the CH activation of indole. The N-methyl-3-iodoindole was identified as a crucial intermediate in the catalytic cycle.

Abstract:A new green synthesis of phenyl vinyl sulfoxide was described. The use of ethylene oxide, strong acid resin, and solid supported phosphotungstic acid made the process green and feasible to industrialize. The optimal condition was selected in the experiments. The total yield was 80.5% and it was eco-friendly. The catalysts were easy to recycle. According to the experiments, the oxidation mechanism was assumed to follow the complex–oxidation–decomplex fashion.

Abstract:An iodophor-catalyzed sulfenylation of indoles using sulfonyl hydrazides as sulfur source to synthesize 3-sulfenylindoles in aqueous phase has been achieved. Notably, iodophor as catalyst and solvent is inexpensive, commercially available and no innocuous to the environment. The method is also easy to operate. Moreover, the synthetic strategy features a wide range of substrates with excellent tolerance to diverse functional groups. A plausible mechanism for the iodophor-mediated 3-sulfenylation of indoles with sulfonyl hydrazides has been proposed. In addition, 3-(phenylthio)-1H-indole was obtained on a multi-gram scale.

Abstract:An efficient and general method for the synthesis of 3-sulfenylindoles and 3-selenylindoles employing visible-light irradiation with graphene oxide as a promoter at room temperature has been achieved. The reaction features are high yields, simple operation, metal-free and iodine-free conditions, an easy-to-handle oxidant, and gram-scalable synthesis. This simple protocol allows one to access a wide range of 3-arylthioindoles, 3-arylselenylindoles, and even 3-thiocyanatoindoles with good to excellent yields.

Abstract:Eco-friendly and regioselective synthesis of 3-(isoxazol-5)-yl)indoles had been developed from the cyclocondensation reaction of β-ethyltho-β-indolyl-α, β-unsaturated ketones and hydroxyl -amine hydrochloride. It was found that in the presence of 1 equivalent of 4-dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) in boiling water, β-ethyltho-β-indolyl-α, β-unsaturated ketones efficiently reacted with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to afford 3-(isoxazol-5)-yl)indoles in good yields and with good to excellent regioselectivity. The method features the advantages of eco-friendly process, good yield and regioselevtivity, operational simplicity, broad substrate scope and ease of scale-up.

Abstract:We report a base-promoted metal-free approach for the synthesis of thieno[2,3-b]indole derivatives. This method combined four C-H σ-bond cleavage reactions of two different kinds of C-H bonds and two C-S σ-bond formation processes. A series of thieno[2,3-b]indoles were obtained starting from 3-benzylindole derivatives with good yields and high regioselectivity, with the elemental sulfur serving as a cheap and readily available sulfur source. Good efficiency could be maintained even when the reaction was performed on a gram scale. A plausible mechanism was proposed on the basis of mechanistic studies.

The coupling reaction was prompted by K2S2O8 in the presence of glucose at room temperature. Broad substrate scope, functional group tolerance, room temperature reactions and metal‐free conditions are the salient features of the developed methodology.

Abstract:A green and efficient synthesis of 3-pyrazolyl indoles was developed by the cyclocondensation reaction of β -ethylthio- β -indolyl- α, β -unsaturated ketones with semicarbazide hydrochloride as hydrazine equivalent in the presence of 3 equiv. of PEG-400( 1 a/PEG mole ratio of 1:3) in reflux water. This procedure did not require toxic hydrazine and product purification, eliminating the use of toxic liquid chemicals.

Abstract:We herein reported a sustainable synthesis of 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles via a Michael-type reaction based on the CuBr-catalysed capture of carboxylic oxonium ylides with isatylidene malononitrile. The reaction is characterized by a high atom economy and low economic constraints. The catalyst CuBr could be conveniently recyclized. The products of the reaction were found to be inhibitory against Na ion channels. We expect the reaction to shed the light on synthesis of biologically interesting molecules directed by principles of green chemistry. Graphical abstract We described a sustainable synthesis of 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles with high atom efficiency and reduced economic constraints. Abstract:In continuation of our research interest in the green oxidation of indoles, we further explore the direct oxidation of 2-methylindoles to 2-formyl indoles promoted by NCS and associated with H2O as the oxygen source. This methodology was demonstrated to be a robust protocol consisting of chlorination, SN2', and oxidation processes, and presents a reasonably broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, thus enabling the preparation of high added-value versatile building blocks susceptible to further functionalization.

Abstract:An "on water" organocatalytic cyanoarylmethylation of aryl acetonitrile to isatins is developed, giving products in high yields and up to excellent diastereoselectivities. A remarkable enhancement of reaction rates and diastereoselectivities by water was observed under mild conditions. Moreover, this approach provides a highly efficient and environmentally benign access to thermodynamic 3-hydroxy-3-cyanomethyl oxindoles.

Abstract:An efficient and eco-friendly method has been developed for the preparation of 3,3′-bis(indolyl)methanes from indoles and aryl acetic acid is reported. The in-situ conversion of aryl acetic acid to their corresponding carbonyl compounds, and subsequent condensation with indoles was prompted by K 2 S 2 O 8 in presence of glucose in water. The metal-free reaction with room temperature conditions, and wide substrate scope with good functional group tolerance are the salient features of the developed methodology.

Abstract:Herein we develop a novel micellar catalytic system based on amphiphilic bifunctional iodide salts for oxidative intramolecular alpha-oxygenation and alpha-amination of carbonyl substrates in water, thus enabling a unified and benign synthesis of various 2-oxindoles containing spirotetrahydrobenzofurans, spiroisochromanones, spiroindolines and spirolactones. Notably, the terminal oxidant H2O2 produced water as the only by-product. The excellent recyclability of the aqueous medium containing the catalyst further highlights the synthetic utility of this system.

Abstract:The present paper describes a simple, efficient, and straightforward protocol for the synthesis of a series of spiro‐oxindole fused dihydroquinazolinone derivatives via one‐pot three‐component reactions of isatoic anhydride, various primary anilines, and substituted isatins in the presence of a catalytic amount of sulfamic acid as an efficient organocatalyst in water under refluxed conditions. A simple, efficient, and straightforward protocol has been developed for the synthesis of spiro‐oxindole fused dihydroquinazolinone derivatives from one‐pot three‐component reactions of isatoic anhydride, various primary anilines, and substituted isatins using a catalytic amount of sulfamic acid as an organocatalyst in water under refluxed conditions. All the synthesized compounds were formed within just 2 h and isolated pure by simple filtration with excellent yields (89%–94%). Gram scale production, use of commercially available low‐cost organocatalyst, green solvent, reusability of the medium, one‐pot three‐component reaction strategy, no column chromatography, and high atom economy are some of the major benefits of this newly developed protocol.
