Abstract:Bacteria-based mineralization is a novel technique, and a potentially useful way of carrying out bio-mineralization in building materials. This study seeks to improve the performance of steel slag by the addition of a microbial agent which can advance mineralization essentially via microbial enzyme activity. Primarily, the dependence of the curing condition on the mechanical properties of steel slag cementing materials subjected to bio-mineralization was examined. Reaction products formed by bacterial mineralization under different curing conditions were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The amount of reaction products was estimated via thermos-gravimetric analysis, and the pore structure was examined by mercury intrusion porosimetry. The compressive strength and carbonation speed increased with increasing curing pressure; the enhancement in strength was notable. Bacteria could accelerate the rate of carbon sequestration in the mineralization process. The compressive strength of steel slag subjected to 4 h bacterial mineralization under 0.3 MPa could reach up to 42.5 MPa, for which the mineralization area and porosity were 80.7% and 29.98%, respectively. The micron-size mineralize by microorganism apparently resulted in a denser and compacted structure. Integrated and denser structures were stronger than their less-integrated and less-denser counterparts.
