Abstract:Recent discovery on scalarvector features of ultrashort pulses sheds new light on the polarization dynamics of ultrafast fibre lasers. Here, we report on the generation of scalar and vector solitons in a bidirectional fibre laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Through introducing different polarization evolving mechanisms into the counter-propagation branches, the fibre laser respectively approaches the scalar-soliton regime and vector-soliton regime in the clockwise and counterclockwise directions. It is found that the strong local birefringence facilitates the energy to flow between two orthogonal polarization directions, consequently inducing the pulse evolution toward vector solitons even against obvious polarization discrimination effect introduced by the NPR mode-locking mechanism. Furthermore, the polarization resolved measurement is implemented to both analyze the scalarvector feature of the emitted solitons and realize the manipulation of vector solitons. In addition, numerical simulations are carried out to clarify the manipulation process of the vector solitons. To our knowledge, this is the first observation of scalarvector operation in a bidirectional fibre laser, which both enriches our understanding toward polarization dynamics of optical solitons and paves potential application scenarios of pulsed fibre lasers.

Full-field Real-Time Characterization of Creeping Solitons Dynamics in a Mode-Locked Fiber Laser

Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Rapid progress in passively mode-locked fiber lasers is currently driven by the recent discovery of vector feature of mode-locking pulses, namely, the group velocity-locked vector solitons, the phase locked vector solitons, and the high-order vector solitons. Those vector solitons are fundamentally different from the previously known scalar solitons. Here, we report a fiber laser where the mode-locked pulse evolves as a vector soliton in the strong birefringent segment and is transformed into a regular scalar soliton after the polarizer within the laser cavity. The existence of solutions in a polarization-dependent cavity comprising a periodic combination of two distinct nonlinear waves is novel and likely to be applicable to various other nonlinear systems. For very large local birefringence, our laser approaches the working regime of vector soliton lasers, while it approaches scalar soliton fiber lasers under the conditions of very small birefringence.

Abstract:Due to the weak birefringence of single mode fibers, solitons generated in fiber lasers are indeed vector pulses and exhibit periodic parameter change including polarization evolution even when there is a polarizer inside the cavity. Period doubling eigenstates of solitons generated in a fiber laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization rotation, i.e., period doubling of polarization components of the soliton, are numerically explored in detail. We found that, apart from the synchronous evolution between the two polarization components, there exists asynchronous development depending on the detailed operation conditions. In addition, period doubling of one polarization component together with period-one of another polarization component can be achieved. When the period tripling window is obtained, much complexed dynamics on the two polarization components could be observed.

Abstract:Solitons, as stable localized wave packets that can propagate long distance in dispersive media without changing their shapes, are ubiquitous in nonlinear physical systems. Since the first experimental realization of optical bright solitons in the anomalous dispersion single mode fibers (SMF) by Mollenauer et al. in 1980 and optical dark solitons in the normal dispersion SMFs by P. Emplit et al. in 1987, optical solitons in SMFs had been extensively investigated. In reality a SMF always supports two orthogonal polarization modes. Taking fiber birefringence into account, it was later theoretically predicted that various types of vector solitons, including the bright-bright vector solitons, dark-dark vector solitons and dark-bright vector solitons, could be formed in SMFs. However, except the bright-bright type of vector solitons, other types of vector solitons are so far lack of clear experimental evidence. Optical solitons have been observed not only in the SMFs but also in mode locked fiber lasers. It has been shown that the passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber lasers offer a promising experimental platform for studying the scalar optical solitons. Vector solitons can also be formed in mode locked fiber lasers. In this dissertation, the author presents results of a series of theoretical and experimental investigations on the vector solitons in fiber lasers.

Abstract:Vector soliton operation of erbium-doped fiber lasers mode locked with atomic layer graphene was experimentally investigated. Either the polarization rotation or polarization locked vector dissipative solitons were experimentally obtained in a dispersion-managed cavity fiber laser with large net cavity dispersion, while in the anomalous dispersion cavity fiber laser, the phase locked NLSE solitons and induced NLSE soliton were experimentally observed. The vector soliton operation of the fiber lasers unambiguously confirms the polarization insensitive saturable absorption of the atomic layer graphene when the light is incident perpendicular to its 2D atomic layer.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of two types of phase-locked vector soliton in weakly birefringent cavity erbium-doped fiber lasers. While a phase-locked dark-dark vector soliton was only observed in fiber lasers of positive dispersion, a phase-locked dark-bright vector soliton was obtained in fiber lasers of either positive or negative dispersion. Numerical simulations confirmed the experimental observations, and further showed that the observed vector solitons are the two types of phase-locked polarization domain-wall solitons theoretically predicted.

Abstract:Based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, we report on a stable passive 23rd harmonic mode-locked erbium-doped fiber soliton laser for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In this laser, 23 solitons are uniformly distributed in the cavity simultaneously, and all solitons have the same energy and duration. The increase of the coupler output enhances the dispersive radiation, and the longer cavity strengthens the interaction between solitons and dispersive waves. The two above factors play the key function to generate the 23rd harmonic mode-locked operation.

Abstract:The bidirectional ultrafast fiber laser is a promising light source for dual-comb applications. The counter-propagating geometry could lead to soliton interaction through gain sharing, as well as the possible outcome of polarization instability. However, the polarization dynamics hidden behind the soliton interaction process in bidirectional fiber lasers were rarely investigated. Herein, we report on the polarization instability induced by the mutual soliton interactions through fiber gain in a bidirectional mode-locked fiber laser. Depending on the adjustment of the intracavity birefringence, the polarization states of two counter-propagating solitons can exhibit similar periodical polarization switching behaviors with a polarization-rotating transition state. The successive interactions of the bidirectional solitons mediated by the polarization cross-saturation effect of gain fiber could be responsible for the soliton polarization instability. These findings, in addition to the fundamental interest of the soliton nonlinear dynamics in dissipative optical systems, also open up new possibilities for creating dynamical control of the soliton polarization state and performance improvement in bidirectional ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:A long-term stable picosecond dissipative soliton (DS) is achieved for the first time using nonlinear polarization evolution. The environmental stabilization is performed by a Faraday mirror, which can cancel environmentally induced changes in the birefringence of the fiber. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components generates DS pulses with 2.9 nJ single pulse energy and 5.9 ps pulse width. The output power test over 2 hours shows the excellent mode-locking stability of this design.

Abstract:In article number 2000216, Xueming Liu and co-workers demonstrate novel optical nonlinear dynamics in a mode-locked laser induced by the coupling interaction of two orthogonally polarized pulses via cross-phase modulation (XPM). The XPM-induced vector asymmetrical soliton displays period-doubling spectral evolution with alternate redshift and blueshift, which is helpful to laser design and brings useful insights into the optical nonlinearity and chaos for solitons.

Abstract:Bound soliton (BS) states, as an interesting physical phenomenon operating at multi-pulse mode, are intensively investigated both theoretically and experimentally. However, the BSs have rarely reported in bidirectional fiber ring lasers. Here, we demonstrated a bidirectional passively mode-locked all-fiber ring laser with BSs output at 1.55 μm. The laser is mode-locked by a single-wall carbon nanotube absorber. Two synchronous single-soliton pulses in clockwise and counter-clockwise directions were delivered simultaneously from the laser, which could be transferred to the two-soliton bound states. The bidirectional operations showed the same BS states with phase differences of -π∕2, 0, and π.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of solitons and bound-state solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser based on the nonlinear polarization rotation effect by polarization-dependent helical grating. The CO2-laser-inscribed grating has a high polarization-dependent loss of 24.4 dB at 1558.4 nm, which has facilitated the achievement of stable mode locking. The soliton laser could generate 548.9 fs pulses at 1560.59 nm with a spectrum bandwidth of 5.45 nm and a signal-to-noise ratio of 75.2 dB. Through adjustment of the polarization controller and pump power, a bound-state soliton mode-locked pulse with a spectral modulation period of 3.11 nm was achieved and the temporal interval between the two solitons was 2.19 ps. Furthermore, its repetition rate can be easily manipulated by varying the pump power. The results indicated that the polarization-dependent helical grating is an excellent polarizer that could be applied in an ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:Raman dissipative soliton is generated in a mode locked polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. Ultrafast Raman laser with a repetition rate of 1.23 MHz is obtained. Signal to noise ratio of the radio frequency spectrum of the Raman dissipative soliton is as high as 85 dB. As the pump power increasing, the pulse energy and the spectral width increase, while the pulse width decreases. The highest pulse energy and lowest pulse width is 1.23 nJ and 63 ps, respectively. It is the first report of Raman dissipative soliton generation from an all polarization maintaining mode locked fiber laser to the best of our knowledge. This configuration provides a method to obtain linearly-polarized ultrafast laser at flexible wavelengths.

Abstract:Due to the necessity of making a series of random adjustments after mode-locking in most experiments for preparing soliton molecules, the repeatability of the preparations remains a challenge. Here, we introduce a novel all-polarization-maintaining erbium-doped fiber laser that utilizes a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror for mode-locking and features a linear shape. This laser can stably output soliton molecules without any additional adjustment once the mode-locking self-starts. Moreover, it can achieve the transition from soliton molecule state to soliton state, and then to multi-pulse state by reducing the pumping power. The unconventional method of generating multi-pulses, combined with a wide pumping power range of 200--640 mW for maintaining mode-locking, allowed us to observe periodic optical spectra with two complete cycles for the first time. Based on the experimental facts, we develop a multistability model to explain this phenomenon. With its ability to switch between three stable states, this flexible laser can serve as a versatile toolbox for studying soliton dynamics.

Abstract:We report on the vector nature of rectangular pulse operating in dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) region in a passively mode-locked fiber laser. Apart from the typical signatures of DSR, the rectangular pulse trapping of two polarization components centered at different wavelengths was observed and they propagated as a group-velocity locked vector soliton. Moreover, the polarization resolved soliton spectra show different spectral distributions. The observed results will enhance the understanding of fundamental physics of DSR phenomenon. Abstract:We demonstrate a fiber ring laser with narrow bandwidth single-longitudinalmode cylindrical vector beam (CVB) output at C-band wavelength range for the first time to the best of our knowledge. A step index two-mode fiber Bragg grating is used as a transverse mode selector for CVB generation, while both the injection-locking technique and narrow bandwidth of the fiber Bragg grating lead to single-longitudinal-mode operation. The 3-dB bandwidth of the laser output is measured to be < 0.01 nm near a single wavelength of 1551.4 nm with a signal-to-background ratio of > 60 dB. Mode distribution and optical spectra of few-mode fibers with periodic modulated refractive index profile, namely the few-mode fiber Bragg gratings with bent radius, are investigated theoretically and experimentally, which provide a comprehensive exploration of CVB's generation.
Vector pulsating solitons and soliton molecules under higher-order effects in passively mode-locked fiber lasers

Abstract:We numerically study the transport dynamics of vector solitons in ytterbium-doped fiber lasers based on a coupled Ginzburg-Landau equation with higher-order effects. By adjusting the small signal gain coefficient and intracavity birefringence, the number of soliton molecules can be manipulated, the transmission of synchronous and asynchronous vector solitons and the generation of chaotic pulse sequences can be realized. Synchronous vector solitons can be generated when the intracavity birefringence is relatively low, the stable transmission of multi-soliton molecules and the interaction between soliton molecules can be achieved. By changing the value of the phase delay, periodic pulsating solitons can be produced. Furthermore, the phenomenon of the pulse train from the period-doubling to chaos can also be observed. With the enhancement of the intracavity birefringence, asynchronous vector solitons can also achieve stable transmission in the cavity, which the amplitudes and widths of two components are opposite with the different phases. The proposed model has universal application value and the numerical results have guiding significance for studying polarization tunable lasers and exploring the nonlinear mechanism in fiber lasers.
