Abstract:Herein, a facile strategy was established to build mechanoresponsive luminogens with high sensitivity to substituents and positional effects. Even in slightly different structures, distinct optical phenomena, including fluorescence efficiency and mechano-responsive properties, were clearly present. Abstract:Structurally simple chalcone derivatives 1-2 are prepared and their diversified emission behaviors are deeply investigated. Two polymorphs (1G:lambda(em) = 536 nm, Phi(f) = 0.08, tau = 1.81 ns; 1O:lambda(em) = 573 nm, Phi(f) = 0.19, tau = 10.82 ns) with distinctively different emission behaviors are constructed by finely controlling the crystallization conditions of compound 1. 1G exhibits typical amplified spontaneous emission while 1O shows an interesting blue shift under smashing process (1O-S: lambda(em) = 562 nm, Phi(f) = 0.23, tau = 6.42 ns), which is ascribed to their different molecular packing structures and intermolecular interactions. Notably, simply introducing a fluorine substituent effectively endows the crystal with red emission (crystal 2: lambda(em) = 598 nm, Phi(f) = 0.16, tau = 18.77 ns). Thus multicolor emissions including green, yellow, orange, and red emissions are obtained based on this simple chalcone skeleton.

Abstract:Two new mechanofluorochromic-active AIE non-planar phenothiazine-based dyes (E)-N'-((10-ethyl-10 H -phenothiazin-3-yl)methylene)-4-methylbenzenesulfonohydrazide (EPMMBS) and (E)-N'-((10-ethyl-10 H -phenothiazin-3-yl)methylene) benzenesulfonohydrazide (EPMBS) were designed and successfully fabricated by simple one step aldimine condensation reaction strategy. The synthesized compounds EPMBS and EPMMBS with subtle different electron-withdrawing moieties disclosed distinct mechanofluorochromic phenomenon via fluorescence color and emission intensity changes upon mechanical grinding. The mechanofluorochromism was supported by PXRD (powder X-ray diffraction) and FESEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy)the powder XRD and FESEM analysis due to the phase transition between well-organized crystalline and the amorphous phase. Our work would provide a promising way for designing more mechanofluorochromic materials.

Abstract:Developing red fluorescence emitters with simple structures via convenient synthetic routes is highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, two novel donor–acceptor-type red emitters, DCFOPV-TPA and SCFOPV-TPA, featuring the intramolecular charge transfer effect were designed by integrating triphenylamine and trifluoromethyl into a CN-substituted oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) backbone. Both chromophores exhibited aggregation-induced enhanced emission and solvatochromic behavior. Moreover, DCFOPV-TPA also displayed reversible mechanofluorochromic properties under external force.

Abstract:It is extremely significant and desirable to integrate the fascinating properties of mechanochromism and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in one simple molecule. Herein, pyrene-based aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) with mechanofluorochromic (MFC) properties solve the traditionally existing aggregation- caused quenching (ACQ) challenge. Three cyanoethylene-functionalized pyrene-based derivatives were designed and synthesized. All compounds exhibit remarkable aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) activity by a 3-20 times enhancement in mixed H2O/THF 2 O/THF solutions. More importantly, high fluorescence efficiency was recorded in the solid state, especially for the luminogen 2c , with more than 200 times observed increased efficiency from 0.3% in solution to 69.8% in the solid state. Meanwhile, excellent mechanochromism properties and reversibility against the grinding treatment was systematically investigated. The excellent fatigue resistance properties are a necessity for potential applications in the field of anti-counterfeiting fluorescent inks and for the encryption of security information.

Abstract:In this paper, four new tetraphenylethylene-based chalcone derivatives ( E )-1-phenyl-3-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (PLPE), ( E )-1-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (PLPE-F), ( E )-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (PLPE-Cl), ( E )-1-(4-bromophenyl)-3-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (PLPE-Br) with different halogen substitutions were reported, and the effects of halogens on their photophysical properties, aggregation-induced emission behaviors and mechano-responsive luminescent properties were systematically investigated. Interestingly, aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) behaviors were observed for PLPE, PLPE-F, PLPE-Cl, and PLPE-Br. Moreover, upon grinding, all of the four compounds displayed mechanical force-induced luminescence enhancement and red-shifted behaviors, which was found to be reversible in the case of fuming with dichloromethane (DCM) vapors or heat treatment. In particular, upon grinding, PLPE-F showed the highest contrast fluorescence response behaviors (red-shifted 49 nm and solid fluorescence quantum yield increased 20-fold). Furthermore, the results of powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) measurements indicated that reversible phase transitions between the ordered crystalline state and the disordered amorphous form was crucial to their interesting mechanical force-induced luminescence enhancement and chromism. And the obvious red shifts of fluorescence emission are ascribed to the increased molecular conjugations via the planarization of molecular conformations. Moreover, halogen-substituted PLPE-F, PLPE-Cl, PLPE-Br have more twisted conformations than PLPE, which are responsible for their higher contrast mechanical force-induced luminescence chromism. Hence, the present study provides a new strategy to construct new advanced high-contrast mechanical force-induced luminescence enhancement and chromism luminescent materials with the introduction of halogen atoms.

Abstract:In this work, two novel luminescent molecules containing distorted phenothiazine-S-oxide and phenothiazine-S,S dioxide skeletons were synthesized by oxidation reactions using different oxidants (m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, acetic acid /hydrogen peroxide). The target compounds were all confirmed by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and EI-MS. Combined with the results of UV-vis absorption spectra and fluorescence emission spectra, we found that the different oxidation states of S-atom, from sulfide (+2) to sulfoxide (+4) and sulfone (+6), led to the blue, yellow-green and yellowish fluorescence of these compounds in the solid states. Subsequent studies showed that the molecule containing the phenothiazine-S-oxide skeleton exhibited obvious solvatochromism, and the increase of solvent polarity induced a red-shift in the emission wavelength. Moreover, this molecule also exhibited a rare self-recovery mechanochromatic behavior. In addition, these properties were further confirmed by theoretical calculations and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis.

Abstract:Four tetraphenylethene-extended phenyl/benzoxazole compounds ( TPEPBZs 1 – 4 ) were synthesized, which exhibited aggregation-induced emission behavior and multi-stimuli-responsive properties. Single-crystal structural analyses revealed that TPEPBZ-2 possessed the most planar conformation and a unique hydrogen-bonded organic framework structure, resulting in a redshifted emission. After being ground in an agate mortar, the morphologies of TPEPBZs 1 – 4 transformed from crystalline to amorphous state, and their luminescence was simultaneously shifted bathochromically to a green emission. It was proposed that the slight modification of substituents on the aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) was a facile strategy to change their solid structures and further mechanochromic contrasts before and after grinding. The initial emission of TPEPBZs 1 – 4 could be returned upon fuming with dichloromethane vapor, indicating reversible mechanochromic properties. Moreover, TPEPBZs 1 – 4 exhibited significant acidichromic behavior. The emission of TPEPBZs 1 – 4 could change reversibly between their initial color and subsequent orange emission under trifluoroacetic acid and triethylamine stimuli. Finally, TPEPBZ-1 with the best mechanochromic and acidichromic properties was successfully applied to paper for anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:Four triphenylamine or carbazole-based highly emissive solid fluorophores (The maximum quantum yield of 42.43%) of dibenzothiophene sulfones have been successfully prepared and characterized. The solid-state emission behaviors and mechanical stimulus-responsive luminescence characteristics of all these donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type or donor-π-acceptor-π-donor (D-π-A-π-D) type compounds 1–4 were investigated. Interestingly, these fluorophores 1–4 exhibited various solid-state fluorescent colors involving blue (CIE color coordinates of (0.15, 0.09)), blue-green (CIE color coordinates of (0.17, 0.43)), yellow (CIE color coordinates of (0.41, 0.56)) and brown-yellow (CIE color coordinates of (0.50, 0.50)). Furthermore, these dyes 1–4 also exhibited different mechanofluorochromic behaviors. More specifically, luminogens 1–3 showed bathochromic mechanofluorochromic phenomena. However, luminogen 4 showed distinct-different hypsochromic mechanofluorochromic phenomenon. All these observed mechanochromic emission conversions could be repeated for many cycles. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction experiments demonstrated that the mechanofluorochromic behaviors of 1–4 were related to the morphology transformation from crystalline state to amorphous state.

Abstract:The design, synthesis, and photophysical properties of organic fluorophores have attracted considerable research interest due to the utility of these compounds for various optoelectronic, analytical, and biological applications. In this study, we synthesized two novel -extended red-emitting hybrid xanthene dyes, each of which has two spirolactone rings and combines a seminaphthofluorescein moiety and a seminaphthorhodafluor moiety in a single molecule. The photophysical properties of the dyes in methanol in the presence of acid, base, and metal cations were investigated. Mono-ring-opened seminaphthofluorescein and seminaphthorhodafluor forms of the dyes could be obtained by the addition of OH- or H+, respectively. Owing to the changes in the absorbance spectra of the mono-ring-opened forms induced by addition of H+ and OH-, the dyes could perform simultaneously the functions of an XOR gate and an INHIBIT gate, with the absorbances at 510 and 560 nm as outputs, respectively, and could act as half-subtractors with H+ and OH- as inputs. Furthermore, stepwise ring-opening could be induced by Hg2+ ions in methanol. In water, the dyes existed in double-ring-opened forms that emitted deep-red fluorescence and were mitochondria-targetable, suggesting that these chromophores might be useful as fluorescence tracers in biological applications. Because the absorption and fluorescence properties of these fluorophores can be regulated via their two spirolactone rings, we expect that these compounds will find utility in various optoelectronic, analytical, and biological applications.

Abstract:A new family of phenazine‐based compounds is synthesized to achieve multicolored emission from deep blue (418 nm) to red (625 nm). Emitters have unique hybrid local and charge‐transfer excited states for S1, T1, T2, and even higher‐layer excited states, respectively, while all emitters possess thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) nature. The rigid structure of phenazine and steric hindrance of donors are sufficiently utilized to suppress the nonradiative consumption, manipulate the configurations of excited states, and regulate the luminescence color. Organic light‐emitting diodes exhibit superior multicolored emission with 10.74% external quantum efficiency. Employing such kind of simple‐structured and easily synthesized compounds to realize multicolored emission would provide a new strategy for designing high‐performance and multicolored TADF materials. The phenazine group is utilized for the first time to synthesize multicolored thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules for realizing the emission from deep blue to red. They feature unique hybrid local and charge‐transfer‐type excited states, ultrahigh exciton utilization efficiencies, and 10.74% maximum external quantum efficiency. These superior performances make them promising candidates for organic light‐emitting diodes.

Abstract:Azaanthracene derivatives, e.g. phenoxazine and phenothiazine, have attracted considerable interest not only in chemistry but also in materials science for the unique electron structures and photophysical properties. However, like most organic luminogens, phenoxazine and phenothiazine both suffer from the annoying aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, which greatly limits their further application in solid state conditions. Fortunately, the discovery of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon provides an elegant platform to solve the stubborn ACQ effect. But most of the existing AIEgens have been prepared through some complicated synthesis processes, which are commonly unpopular with environmental unfriendly, high cost, and low solubility. Therefore, it deserves great attention to explore a simple and cost effective approach to achieve the AIE modification of phenoxazine and phenothiazine. In this work, two diphenylethylene substituted azaanthracene derivatives DPE-POZ and DPE-PTZ were masterly designed and synthesized through a fairly simple one-step reaction. The introduction of multi-rotor group diphenylethylene endows the products with twisted molecular conformations, which successfully promotes the photophysical behavior conversion of ACQ-AIE. The αAIE (the ratio of PL intensity in a mixed solvent with 90 vol% fraction of water to 0 vol%)of DPE-POZ and DPE-PTZ reached 8 and 23, respectively. In addition, DPE-POZ exhibited an uncommon blue-shifted mechanofluorochromic phenomenon. The powder X-ray diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction characterizations revealed that the MFC properties could be attributed to the phase transition between the crystalline and amorphous states which was promoted by the loose solid molecular arrangement.

Abstract:Red luminescent materials are essential components for full color display and white lightening based on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, but the extension of emission color towards red or deep red region generally leads to decreased photoluminescence and electroluminescence efficiencies. Herein, we wish to report two new luminescent molecules (2CNDPBPPr-TPA and 4CNDPBPPr-TPA) consisting of cyano-substituted 11,12-diphenyldipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine acceptors and triphenylamine donors. As the increase of cyano substituents, the emission wavelength is greatly red-shifted and the reverse intersystem crossing process is promoted, resulting in strong red delayed fluorescence. Meanwhile, due to the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds, the molecular structures become rigidified and planarized, which brings about large horizontal dipole ratios. As a result, 2CNDPBPPr-TPA and 4CNDPBPPr-TPA can perform as emitters efficiently in OLEDs, furnishing excellent external quantum efficiencies of 28.8 % at 616 nm and 20.2 % at 648 nm, which are significantly improved in comparison with that of the control molecule without cyano substituents. The findings in this work demonstrate that the introduction of cyano substituents to the acceptors of delayed fluorescence molecules could be a facile and effective approach to explore high-efficiency red or deep red delayed fluorescence materials.

Abstract:Pyrene-based luminogens have attracted wide attention due to their promising applications in organic electronics, chemical sensing, and bioimaging. In this study, a cyanoethylene-functionalized pyrene-based luminogen CNPyCH3 was designed and synthesized. Experimental results show that CNPyCH3 exhibits distinct photophysical properties in dilute solution and various solid states. The mechano-fluorochromic (MFC) property is more attractive and interesting, as a red shift with enhanced emission was observed upon mechanical stimulation. The intriguing MFC enhancement behavior was further investigated by in-depth theoretical calculations combining Monte Carlo simulations, quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations, and time-dependent density functional theory. It was found that the calculated emission wavelengths for both pristine and ground CNPyCH3 are in good agreement with the experimental values, and that the ground CNPyCH3 has a greater oscillator strength. From the perspective of intermolecular interactions, the weakened π-π interactions induced by the half-switched “face-to-edge” packing modes are beneficial for achieving brighter emission upon grinding. In terms of intramolecular structures, the ground CNPyCH3 has a more planar conformation around the cyanoethylene moiety in the excited-state equilibrium geometry than the pristine CNPyCH3, resulting in the grinding-induced red-shifted emission. Our study provides a unique insight into the MFC enhancement behavior of the pyrene-based luminogens.
Multicolor mechanochromism of a phenothiazine derivative through molecular interaction and conformational modulations

Abstract:Mechanochromic luminescent (MCL) materials have attracted great attention in the fields of sensing, memory chips and anti-counterfeiting. However, most MCL materials only display a two-color change and it is challenging to achieve multicolor mechanochromism with a single molecule. Herein, we reported a twisted D-π-A type molecule (PZ-BZ) composed of a phenothiazine (donor), 1,4-phenylene unit (π) and benzothiazole (acceptor). PZ-BZ exhibits intramolecular charge transfer and aggregation-induced enhancement emission properties. Additionally, multicolor mechanochromic behaviour of PZ-BZ single crystal is observed. The original crystal of PZ-BZ emits cyan fluorescence (470 nm). When crushed, it exhibits blue-shifted emission (455 nm) due to the destruction of intermolecular interactions. Further grinding induces conformation planarization, resulting in large red-shifted fluorescence (503 nm). This study provides a deep insight into the molecular mechanism of multicolor mechanochromism through molecular interaction and conformation modulations.

Abstract:Owing to academic significance and potential applications, mechanofluorochromism has attracted much research interest. However, among the hundreds of mechanofluorochromic organic and metallorganic compounds reported to date, those with high contrast, multicolour and multichannel switching, and a remarkable mechanohypsochromic luminescence are rarely realized. This paper presents the synthesis and unusual mechano- and thermo-chromic fluorescence behaviours of a new 1,4-diketo-pyrrolo[3,4-c]-pyrrole derivative (CODPP) with oxadiazole as the conjugation bridge and carbazole as the end donor. The as-prepared crystalline CODPP emits a near-infrared light (723 nm, NIR state) and can be mechanically ground into a red emitting state (614 nm, R state), rendering a large mechano-fluorohypsochromic shift up to 110 nm. However, unlike most mechanofluorochromic materials, the ground R state could not revert to the pristine (NIR) state upon heat annealing; instead, a new yellow emitting state (557 nm, Y state) is formed, and grinding the Y state affords the R state. Moreover, both the Y and R states hardly change their colours upon solvent fuming but can form the NIR state only by recrystallization or reprecipitation. These changes are repeatable and are characterized and discussed based on IR, X-ray diffraction, DSC, and time-resolved fluorescence spectra. This remarkable mechano- and thermo-hypsochromic luminescence has enriched the types of stimuli responsive materials and enlarged the optical properties of DPP derivatives.

Abstract:On the basis of molecular design about the donor-acceptor (D-A) triphenylamine-coumarin (TPA-coumarin) dyad, two new bichromophores 7-butoxy-6-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-4,8-dimethyl-2H-chromen-2-one (TC) and 7-butoxy-6-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-8-methyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)-2H-chromen-2-one (TF), were synthesized and characterized by using IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS. Both TC and TF exhibited the expected solid-state fluorescence emission due to the aggregation induced emission effect and different degrees of positive solvatochromism due to their different molecular conformations in various solvents. Owing to the different push-pull electronic effects of substituents on the coumarin moiety, TC and TF, acting as the D-A compounds, showed different HOMO-LUMO gaps and a variable red-shifted emission in their solid-state, substantiating the possibility to effectively tune the photophysical properties of these bichromophores by rational molecular design.

Abstract:A new cyano-substituted diarylethene derivative (R-NH2) with reversible far-red mechanofluorochromic property was synthesized and confirmed by standard spectroscopic methods. To the best of our knowledge, the 684 nm red-shifted wavelength of the ground R-NH2 is the longest wavelength that has appeared in the literature. The mechanofluorochromic mechanism was investigated by small and wide-angle X-ray scattering and was ascribed to the destruction of crystalline structure. More in-depth study by infrared spectra and time-resolved emission-decay behaviors showed that the changes of C H out-of-plane bending vibrations in aryl group of the compound and the obvious increase of fluorescence lifetime might be the fundamental reasons. The synthetic strategy reported here can be extended to prepare more and more long-wavelength emission mechanofluorochromic materials, which can broaden the scope of application of such materials and for thoroughly understanding the mechanofluorochromic mechanism.
