Abstract:The unique enzyme-like properties of metal nanoparticles (NPs) hold great promise for chemical and biomedical applications; implementation relies on improvements in their catalytic efficiency. We have constructed PtCuCo nanostructures using hydrothermal treatment of Co3O4, Cu2+, and Pt2+ in aqueous solutions, resulting in PtCuCo trimetallic alloy NPs having hollow structures, as confirmed by TEM, XRD, XPS, and EDS analyses. These PtCuCo NPs are capable of oxidizing 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-benzidine (TMB) in either the absence or presence of hydrogen peroxide, suggesting efficient peroxidase- and oxidase-like activity. These NPs could also catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by NaBH4. We believe that the combination of Pt and oxidized Cu and Co species results in surfaces with rich active sites possessing a wide range of electronic variation, which promotes both generation of hydroxyl radicals and electron transfer. Consequently, the catalytic capabilities of our PtCuCo NPs are greater than those of either Pt or PtCu NPs. Building upon the peroxidase-like activity of PtCuCo NPs, we developed a colorimetric method not only capable of specifically detecting glucose, but also able to detect rongalite and HS-, on the basis of the inhibitory effect of these substances upon PtCuCo nanoperoxidase.
2D PdCu Alloy Nanodendrites Manifest Effective Peroxidase-Like Activity Against Biofilms

Abstract:Noble metal nanomaterials with peroxidase-like catalytic activity have received great interest lately for their potential applications in biomedicine and environmental protection; however, it is still challenging to achieve high catalytic efficiency despite enormous efforts. In this work, a novel but simple route was developed to synthesize 2D PdCu alloy nanodendrites (PdCu NDs) as a high-performance peroxidase mimic for biofilm elimination. Catalytic kinetics shows that the composition-dependent synergy between Pd and Cu in the PdCu NDs can strongly enhance the peroxidase-like activity. Density functional theory calculations further provide the underlying mechanisms at both atomic and electronic levels for the effective adsorption and dissociation of H2O2 molecules on PdCu NDs surfaces. Owing to their superior peroxidase-like activity, the PdCu NDs exhibit striking biofilm inhibition properties, which suggests that the controlled synthesis of 2D noble metal alloy may open up new opportunities for enhancing enzyme-like activities of noble metal nanomaterials.

Abstract:Peroxidase mimics with dimensions on the nanoscale have received great interest as emerging artificial enzymes for biomedicine and environmental protection. While a variety of peroxidase mimics have been actively developed recently, limited progress has been made toward improving their catalytic efficiency. In this study, we report a type of highly efficient peroxidase mimic that was engineered by depositing Ir atoms as ultrathin skins (a few atomic layers) on Pd nanocubes (i.e., Pd-Ir cubes). The Pd-Ir cubes exhibited significantly enhanced efficiency, with catalytic constants more than 20- and 400-fold higher than those of the initial Pd cubes and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), respectively. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the Pd-Ir cubes were applied to the colorimetric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of human prostate surface antigen (PSA) with a detection limit of 0.67 pg/mL, which is ∼110-fold lower than that of the conventional HRP-based ELISA using the same set of antibodies and the same procedure.

Abstract:Surface engineering of nanozymes has been recognized as a potent strategy to improve their catalytic activity and specificity. We synthesized polydopamine-coated Co3O4 nanoparticles (PDA@Co3O4 NPs) through simple dopamine-induced self-assembly and demonstrated that these NPs exhibit catalase-like activity by decomposing H2O2 into oxygen and water. The activity of PDA@Co3O4 NPs was approximately fourfold higher than that of Co3O4 NPs without PDA, possibly due to the additional radical scavenging activity of the PDA shell. In addition, PDA@Co3O4 NPs were more stable than natural catalase under a wide range of pH, temperature, and storage time conditions. Upon the addition of a sample containing sulfide ion, the activity of PDA@Co3O4 NPs was significantly inhibited, possibly because of increased mass transfer limitations via the absorption of the sulfide ion on the PDA@Co3O4 NP surface, along with NP aggregation which reduced their surface area. The reduced catalase-like activity was used to determine the levels of sulfide ion by measuring the increased fluorescence of the oxidized terephthalic acid, generated from the added H2O2. Using this strategy, the target sulfide ion was sensitively determined to a lower limit of 4.3 μM and dynamic linear range of up to 200 μM. The fluorescence-based sulfide ion assay based on PDA@Co3O4 NPs was highly precise when applied to real tap water samples, validating its potential for conveniently monitoring toxic elements in the environment.
Pd-Catalyzed Reaction-Producing Intermediate S on a Pd/In2O3 Surface: A Key To Achieve the Enhanced CS2-Sensing Performances

Abstract:Although chemiresistive gas sensors, based on metal-oxide semiconductors, have exhibited particular promise for the monitoring of air pollution, they are often limited because of poor selectivity. In that case, to overcome this issue, according to the essence of the gas-sensing process, the method of reforming the surface reaction path on the surface of the sensing materials was used. Here, we report that Pd nanoparticles supported over the In2O3 composites, featured with a yolk-shell structure, enable the trace detection of carbon disulfide (CS2) gas molecules, which are immensely dangerous to humans and animals. Moreover, the prominent enhancement of the gas response and the ultraselective CS2-sensing characteristic were acquired in comparison with pristine In2O3 sensors. Significantly, density functional theory calculations revealed that the Pd supported on In2O3 greatly facilitates the adsorption capacity to CS2, and the intermediate S, produced by Pd-catalyzed desulfurization reaction, on the Pd/In2O3 surface during the sensing process is a key to achieving a high CS2 gas response as well as ultraselectivity, which is well in agreement with the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results. On the basis of these results, a new sensing mechanism model for the CS2-sensing process was put forward.

Abstract:Although the unique properties of nanomaterials have endowed enzyme-mimic catalysts with broad applications, the development of catalysts still relies on trial-and-error strategies without predictive indicators. Surface electronic structures have rarely been studied in enzyme-mimic catalysts. Herein, we present a platform for understanding the impact of surface electronic structures on electrocatalysis toward H2O2 decomposition, using the Pd icosahedra (Pd ico), Pd octahedra (Pd oct) and Pd cubic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts. The electronic properties on Pd were modulated with a correlation of surface orientation. We revealed the relationship between the electronic properties and electrocatalytic performance, in which the surface electron accumulation can boost the electrocatalytic activity of the enzyme-mimic catalysts. As a result, the Pd icodimer exhibits the highest electrocatalytic and sensing efficiency. This work offers new perspectives for the investigation of structure-activity relationships and provides an effective knob for utilizing the surface electronic structures to boost the catalytic performance for enzyme-mimics.

Abstract:Monitoring of reactive oxygen species like superoxide anion (O2∙−) turns to be of increasing significance considering their potential damages to organism. In the present work, we fabricated a novel O2∙− electrochemical sensor through immobilizing superoxide dismutase (SOD) onto a Pt–Pd/MWCNTs hybrid modified electrode surface. The Pt–Pd/MWCNTs hybrid was synthesized via a facile one-step alcohol-reduction process, and well characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The immobilization of SOD was accomplished using a simple drop-casting method, and the performance of the assembled enzyme-based sensor for O2∙− detection was systematically investigated by several electrochemcial techniques. Thanks to the specific biocatalysis of SOD towards O2∙− and the Pt–Pd/MWCNTs – promoted fast electron transfer at the fabricated interface, the developed biosensor exhibits a fast, selective and linear amperometric response upon O2∙− in the concentration scope of 40–1550μM (R2=0.9941), with a sensitivity of 0.601mAcm−2mM−1 and a detection limit of 0.71μM (S/N=3). In addition, the favorable biocompatibility of this electrode interface endows the prepared biosensor with excellent long-term stability (a sensitivity loss of only 3% over a period of 30 days). It is promising that the proposed sensor will be utilized as an effective tool to quantitatively monitor the dynamic changes of O2∙− in biological systems.

Abstract:As a new field, there are still many unknowns and challenges in the study of nanozymes, such as the mechanism of the reaction catalyzed by nanozymes and the precise control of the catalytic activity of nanozymes. We found that Pd@Pt nanoparticles (NPs) have trienzyme mimetic activity, including peroxidase-like, catalase-like, and oxidase-like activity. More importantly, we observed that the catalytic performance can be modulated by DNA. After systematic studies, the potential mechanisms of DNA modulation of nanozymes were through local coordination, van der Waals forces, and hydrophobic forces, constructing an interface modulation in the Pd@Pt NP enzyme-like system. Based on the surface-interface effect between DNA and Pd@Pt NP nanozymes, a colorimetric sensor was constructed for rapid, accurate and selective analysis of Salmonella by using a specific aptamer. After optimization, the limit of detection was calculated to be ∼58 CFU mL−1. These results indicated that the catalytic activity of Pd@Pt NP nanozymes can be modulated by DNA, and the surface-interface effect has potential in the application of analytical assays.

Abstract:The surface evolution of catalysts, which leads to the changes in physicochemical properties for various catalysts under different storage temperatures and amounts of time, is an important issue for altering catalytic performance. However, the influence of such a surface evolution under different storage conditions on the catalytic performance is often neglected, albeit enormous studies have been carried out in past decades. In this work, Pd nanocrystals are prepared through facile aqueous synthetic methods and employed as model catalysts for catalytic reactions. Our investigation reveals that the storage duration of Pd nanocubes has great influence on their catalytic performance. Generally, the catalytic performance of Pd nanocubes show a dramatically enhanced catalytic performance for Heck coupling reaction after a storage duration of 25 days. According to XPS characterization, this enhancement in catalytic performance is attributed to the presence of oxidized Pd on the surface of Pd nanocubes. Moreover, it is further discovered that the change in storage temperature and storage environment can also contribute to the surface state evolution of Pd nanocubes, affecting their catalytic performance. This work shows not only the storage condition-dependent catalytic performance of the Pd nanocubes, but also the evidence that allows us to understand the structure sensitivity of Pd nanocubes over different storage condition.
Amperometric Inhibitive Biosensor Based on Horseradish Peroxidase-Nanoporous Gold for Sulfide Determination

Abstract:As a well-known toxic pollutant, sulfide is harmful to human health. In this study, a simple and sensitive amperometric inhibitive biosensor was developed for the determination of sulfide in the environment. By immobilizing nanoporous gold (NPG) on glassy carbon electrode (GCE), and encapsulating horseradish peroxidase (HRP) onto NPG, a HRP/NPG/GCE bioelectrode for sulfide detection was successfully constructed based on the inhibition of sulfide on HRP activity with o-Phenylenediamine (OPD) as a substrate. The resulted HRP/NPG/GCE bioelectrode achieved a wide linear range of 0.1–40 μM in sulfide detection with a high sensitivity of 1720 μA mM−1 cm−2 and a low detection limit of 0.027 μM. Additionally, the inhibition of sulfide on HRP is competitive inhibition with OPD as a substrate by Michaelis-Menten analysis. Notably, the recovery of HRP activity was quickly achieved by washing the HRP/NPG/GCE bioelectrode using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique in deaerated PBS (50 mM, pH 7.0) for only 60 s. Furthermore, the real sample analysis of sulfide by the HRP/NPG/GCE bioelectrode was achieved. Based on above results, the HRP/NPG/GCE bioelectrode could be a better choice for the real determination of sulfide compared to inhibitive biosensors previously reported.
Uncapped nanobranch-based CuS clews used as an efficient peroxidase mimic enable the visual detection of hydrogen peroxide and glucose with fast response

Abstract:Nanosized materials acting as substitutes of natural enzymes are currently attracting significant research due to their stable enzyme-like characteristics, but some flaws of these nanozymes, including their limited catalytic rate and efficiency, need to be remedied to enable their wider applications. In this work, we verify for the first time the catalytic behavior of uncapped nanobranch-based CuS clews as a peroxidase mimic. XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM proofs demonstrate that high-purity CuS clews composed of intertwined wires with abundant nanodendrites outside are successfully produced via a facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis approach, with thiourea as both the sulfion source and the structure-directing agent. The synthesized CuS can catalytically oxidize 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H2O2 to trigger a visible color reaction with rapid response (reaching a maximum change within 5 min). The proposed CuS nanozyme exhibits preferable catalytic kinetics over natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP). This outstanding activity primarily results from the large surface area and rich sites exposed by the uncapped unique structure. Under optimized conditions, the fabricated sensing system provides linear absorbance (652 nm) changes in the H2O2 concentration range of 0.2˜130 μM, with a detection limit of as low as 63 nM. When coupled with glucose oxidase (GOD), the system is demonstrated to be capable of monitoring glucose in blood samples with excellent performance.

Abstract:The effective synthesis of functional nanoplatforms for simple, selective, and sensitive hydrogen sulfide detection has received significant attention because of the toxicity of hydrogen sulfide. Here, a new porphyrin-based porous organic polymer, FePPOPEPA, was fabricated through a Pd-/CuI-catalyzed Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction between tris(4-ethynylphenyl)amine and iron(III) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4′-bromophenyl)porphyrinato (FeTBrPP). Results showed that FePPOPEPA has a porous framework, high BET surface areas, wide pore size distribution, abundant surface catalytic active sites, and excellent stability as well as reusability. In the presence of H2O2, FePPOPEPA showed high peroxidase-like activity toward 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine. Based on these findings, FePPOPEPA was used for the first time as an efficient colorimetric probe for sensitive and selective detection of sulfide ions with a low detection limit (0.013 μM) within 3 min. Highly Dispersed Pd Icosahedra and Ag Nanocubes on Ultrathin G-C3n4 Nanosheet for Boosting Photocatalytic Bacterial Inactivation and Organic Pollutants Degradation

Abstract:Engineering surface facet of metallic nanoparticles that decorated on certain substants is an intriguing strategy to modulate photocatalytic capacity. Herein, a novel photocatalyst by doping g-C3N4 3 N 4 nanosheet with Pd icosahedra with {11 1} facets and Ag nanocubes with {100} facets were firstly synthesized through facile wet-chemical route. The successfully constructed g-C3N4/Pd/Ag 3 N 4 /Pd/Ag composites were employed as a visible-light-driven dual- functional photocatalyst for bacterial inactivation and organic contaminant degradation. Result suggested that 1 x 108 8 CFU/mL E. coli strains can be totally inactivated by g-C3N4/Pd/Ag 3 N 4 /Pd/Ag within 60 min, outperformed that of {1 00} faceted enclosed Pd nanocubes functioned g-C3N4/Ag. 3 N 4 /Ag. Also, the optimized g-C3N4/Pd/Ag 3 N 4 /Pd/Ag exhibited ideal photocatalytic performance toward tetracycline and methylene blue degradation. The rate constant was found to be 8.74 x 10-3-3 and 7.08 x 10-3-3 min-- 1 , respectively, which was higher than those of bare g-C3N4 3 N 4 and g-C3N4/Pd. 3 N 4 /Pd. Quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis suggested that hole (h+), + ), electron (e-- ), and superoxide radical (center dot O2- center dot O 2- ) exerted a key role in the improved capacity. Furthermore, the more positive Fermi level of Pd icosahedra and Ag nanocubes relative to that of g-C3N4 3 N 4 also contributed to the enhanced photocatalytic performance. Synthesis and DFT calculation of microbe-supported Pd nanocomposites with oxidase-like activity for sensitive detection of nitrite

Abstract:Nanozymes have emerged as the forefront of research in analytical sensing due to their promising applications. In this study, we utilized polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified Pichia pastoris residue to synthesize microbial-based palladium nanocomposites (Pd/MMR) through simple in-situ reduction methods. The dispersed active sites of Pd nanoparticles with a size of 2.12 ± 0.49 nm that were supported by microbial biomass provided excellent oxidative enzyme-mimicking activity to Pd/MMR. The catalytic mechanism of Pd/MMR involved the combined action of 1 O 2 , ·OH, and · O 2 – , and possible reaction pathways and corresponding energy barriers were also revealed using DFT calculations. We also established a quantitative detection platform for nitrite using Pd/MMR. The platform could detect nitrite at concentrations of 10–300 μM with a detection limit of 0.27 μM, and was successfully applied to detect nitrite in real samples. These findings serve as a reference for the synthesis and application of metal nanocomposites using microorganisms.

Abstract:High cost and restricted activity of electrocatalysis are the major challenges for hydrogen generation and biosensors. In this work, we provided a one-pot synthesis of Cu x Pd y alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with controllable atomic ratio and "clean surface". Benefiting from the preferable d-band structure, the Cu 62 Pd 38 NPs exhibited a lower overpotentials in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over the full pH range. In the acidic media, Cu 62 Pd 38 NPs achieved a low overpotential of 28.12 mV for HER, which was 25.73% of Pd NPs. In the neutral solution, the overpotential by Cu 62 Pd 38 NPs is only 41.71% for that by uncleaned CuPd NPs. In alkaline media, the overpotential by Cu 62 Pd 38 NPs was declined from 38.01 to 20.20 mV after 720 min yielding hydrogen, which was only 53.14% for the initial overpotential. As applied in biosensor, the synergistic effect of Cu and Pd accelerated the kinetics of electrocatalytic process, resulting in an enhanced performance. The glucose sensor constructed by Cu 67 Pd 33 exhibited a wider detection range up to 100.0 mM. And the sensitivity is 379.4 μA/(mM·cm 2 ), which is ca. 4.63 and 14.09 folds for that by pure Cu NPs and Pd NPs, respectively. An optimal atomic percent would be conducive to optimize electrocatalytic activity of Cu x Pd y alloy. The volcano plots for Cu x Pd y would open up a new avenue for designing electrocatalysis with rationalized cost and optimized performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we have demonstrated a new carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite sensor with Pd nanoparticles prepared by seed-mediated growth method, using 3.5nm gold nanoparticles as seeds and CNTs as growth scaffold. Their morphological characterization was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were employed to characterize the performance of the modified electrode (PdNPs/AuNPs/CNTs/chitosan (chit) electrode). The results showed that the modified electrode had obvious electrochemical activity for electrocatalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at −0.2V. Low detection limit of 0.1μM with wide linear range from 0.1μM to 6mM could be obtained. The results of the experiment also showed that the sensor exhibits good reproducibility and long-term stability, as well as high selectivity with no interference from other oxidable species.
