Abstract:Singular beams which possess helical phase wavefront or spatially inhomogeneous polarization provide new freedom for optical field manipulation. However, conventional schemes to produce the singular beams have difficulty in realizing the flexible switch between different singular beams. In this work, we have experimentally demonstrated the capability of dielectric metasurfaces to generate three types of singular beams and switch between them at working wavelength of 1550 nm . We have shown vortex beam and cylindrical vector beam generation with single metasurface and cylindrical vector vortex beam generation with two cascaded metasurfaces. Moreover, experimental demonstration on switching cylindrical vector beam into vortex beam has also been done by combining one quarter-wave plate and a Glan laser polarizer. The experimental results match well with the analysis from the Jones matrix calculations. The average conversion efficiency of cylindrical vector beam to vortex beam was estimated to be 47.7%, which was about 2.3% lower than the theoretical prediction.
Compact generation of arbitrarily accelerating double caustic beams with orthogonal polarizations using a dielectric metasurface

Abstract:Compact launching double arbitrarily accelerating caustic beams with orthogonal polarizations based on a metasurface are presented. By only tailoring the phase of the transmitted fields from an amorphous silicon elliptical posts array, launching double arbitrarily accelerating caustic beams with orthogonal polarizations is achieved. The trajectories of vector caustic beams with orthogonal polarizations are dependent on the phase modulations through the structural units of the metasurfaces. By changing the polarization of the incident light, dynamic switching between two caustic beams is obtained. Compared to the traditional methods, the simple design method can provide a very compact device overcoming some limitations of the traditional methods for generating vector caustic beams. The results can be used for potential applications in integrated optics, polarization optics, dynamic beam shaping, biosensing, and micro-particle manipulation. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Bessel beams have a wide range of applications in optical communications because their non-diffractive properties do not depend on the amplitude and phase distribution in the spatial frequency range. Recently, metasurfaces have been widely utilized as subwavelength materials for light manipulation, including the generation of Bessel beams. However, so far, no reports of metasurfaces generating Bessel beams with polarization rotation function have been published, which has potential applications for information encryption in optical communication. An all-dielectric metasurface based on the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase is proposed to realize the generation of a Bessel beam with polarization rotation function under the incident of linearly polarized (LP) light. Furthermore, we exhibit dual Bessel beams with orthogonal polarization states through the superimposition of two Bessel beam phases onto a metasurface, with different polarization rotation angles and phase gradients. Our final demonstration illustrates Bessel beam arrays with polarization rotation, and this design concept can be extended to more channels and higher-order Bessel beams. The proposed all-dielectric metasurfaces based on polarization rotation function provides a new option for the application of Bessel beams in integrated optical systems and multiplexing.

Abstract:A single transmission‐type metasurface operating in the terahertz (THz) band is demonstrated. So, pencil‐like beams with inhomogeneous polarization profiles can be imparted along the propagation direction. The introduction of a latitudinal polarization control factor representing the initial phase difference enables near‐even manipulation of the evolutionary trend of the longitudinal inhomogeneous polarization state. Polarization plays a key role in fundamental science, and manipulating the evolutionary trends of longitudinal polarization states can provide new implements for light–matter interaction. However, existing 3D optical devices can only manipulate the polarization conversion in a single transverse plane. Recently, methods to control polarization by cascading bulky optical systems are miniaturized using metasurfaces. Nevertheless, it is quite challenging to generate focused beams with vectorial properties for metasurfaces carrying inhomogeneous polarization profiles. Here, a single‐layer all‐silicon metasurface operating in the terahertz (THz) band is demonstrated to address all those aforementioned challenges in one go, and pencil‐like beams with inhomogeneous polarization profiles can be imparted along the propagation direction. The introduction of a latitudinal polarization control factor representing the initial phase difference enables near‐even manipulation of the evolutionary trend of the longitudinal polarization state according to the extended focal depth. By manipulating the topological charges within two orthogonal circularly polarized channels to accomplish coherent superposition, a focused vortex beam with vectorial properties can be generated in desired planes. Two functional demonstrations based on this approach are established experimentally, offering promising opportunities for structured light on meta‐optics.

Abstract:In this Letter, we study the influence of magnetic mode dispersion on the performance of a metasurface cylindrical vector beam (CVB) generator. An optical field after a metasurface CVB generator can be manipulated by polarization-dependent transmittance arising from dual magnetic resonance of silicon nanopillars. A perfect CVB is only generated when the transmittances are equal for two orthogonal polarization. Two magnetic resonant wavelengths can be spatially separated because of the coherent superposition between the residual incident light and the generating CVB, which is potentially useful for a compact multiplex color router.

Abstract:Polarization is an important dimension in the research and applications of light waves. However, traditional polarization optics often only focus on the polarization characteristics in the transverse plane. Here, we demonstrate a new scheme for the generation of longitudinally varied polarization state in terahertz beam using all-silicon metasurface. We employ wavefront transformation designs with long-focal-depth for orthogonal circularly polarized terahertz waves, achieving varied amplitude and phase along the propagation direction in opposite spin states. Based on the principle of coherent superposition of polarized waves, different linear and elliptical polarization states are obtained in transverse planes along the propagation path, with variable ellipticity and azimuth angle. Simulation results show that a large-scale evolution of the elliptical polarization azimuth angle from 45 degrees to -60 degrees and ellipticity from 20 degrees to -74 degrees can be observed within a focal depth range of 0.45-0.8 mm. We also intuitively display the helical trajectory of the polarization state from left-hand elliptical ones to right-hand elliptical ones within the focal depth range, using the Poincar & eacute; sphere. This work expands the application of metasurface devices for multifunctional polarization devices and can be applied to polarization generation and transformation for optical imaging or terahertz communications.

Abstract:Beams with longitudinally continuously varying polarization provide a new application dimension in fields such as optical communication and optical manipulation. The small-sized and multifunctional metasurfaces have been used to generate scalar or vector beams whose polarizations vary along the propagation direction within a single polarization mode. However, dual-mode beams with longitudinally varying polarization can further increase the dimension of manipulation, but they have been rarely explored. Here, we propose a scheme based on the spatial partitioning method for designing dual-mode beams with longitudinally evolving polarization. To validate the proposed scheme, we demonstrate three dual-mode beams generated by all-silicon metasurfaces which have evolving polarization from scalar to vector, scalar vortex to vector vortex, and first-order to second-order cylindrical vector, respectively. The transverse polarization distributions of these beams depend on their longitudinal position. The different focal lengths of the orthogonal circularly polarized components and the design of long focal depth make it possible to change the polarization distribution longitudinally. The optical fields generated based on the proposed scheme are expected to be applied in depth detection and optical manipulation.

Abstract:Metasurface is a class of two-dimensional microstructure functional materials, which has an ability of modulating light in subwavelength region and becomes a hot topic during the last decade. An advantage of metasurfaces is their versatility by invoking the degrees of freedom of light field to achieve various functionalities. In this paper, we report methods of using the polarization and dispersion of light to achieve multifunctional metasurface devices, allowing the different degrees of freedom of light to carry independent phase profiles to achieve the polarization-dependent conversion of Bessel beams with different orders and numerical apertures as well as integrated optical tweezers-optical spanner metasurface. Also, the wavelength-controlled multifunctional metalens by introducing an improved genetic algorithm has been implemented. We envision our research are expected to be the potential candidates in multifunctional integrated optical devices.
Generation of Airy Beams with Transmissive Cross-Polarization Conversion Metasurfaces

Abstract:This paper present a 1D finite-energy Airy beam generator at 8.0 GHz using a transmissive metasurface composed of coupling-propagation-decoupling unit cells. The phase and amplitude of the cross-polarized transmitted waves can be controlled by changing the length of the stripline and the position of loaded shorting pins, respectively. Utilizing this property to reshape the field of transmitted waves in accordance with the desired phase and amplitude profile of 1D finite-energy Airy beams. The designed metasurface is fabricated to measure the quasi-nondiffraction and self-bending properties of the generated 1D Airy beams at 8.0 GHz. In addition, the presented Airy beams generator has a very thin thickness of 0.05 lambda(0) (approximate to mm). The measured results were found to be in good agreement with the simulated results. Thanks to the independent control of phase, amplitude and polarization, the designed unit cell can be used in structured light, beam shaping, and holography etc.

Abstract:The proposed scheme is for generation and manipulation structured vector light fields along the propagation direction in terahertz band based on all‐silicon metasurfaces. By introducing the varying phase differences via path accumulation or initial phase, continuous variation and independently designed vector polarization distributions in multiple planes are obtained, for both of the transverse and longitudinal components. The generation and manipulation of vector light fields are of great significance for both fundamental research and industrial applications of polarized optics. In recent years, the spatial domain control of structured vector fields has gradually expanded from two‐ to three‐dimensional, including traditional optics and meta‐optics. Here, a new method to generate and manipulate structured vector light fields along the propagation direction is proposed, and the functionality in terahertz band using all‐silicon metasurfaces is demonstrated. The coherent superposition of orthogonal circularly polarized terahertz waves through long focal depth and multifocal metalens is completed, and varying phase differences between them in the propagation direction via path accumulation or initial phase design are introduced, thereby continuous variation or independently designed vector polarization distributions in multiple planes are obtained. It is worth mentioning that the proposed scheme is not only for the design of transverse electric field components, but also shows a strong ability for manipulation of the longitudinal component. This scheme realizes the polarization distribution designs of three‐dimensional vector fields in three‐dimensional space, and provides a new inspiration for the generation and manipulation of vector beams based on meta‐optics.

Theoretical Study on Generation of Radially Polarized Beam from Linearly Polarized Beam with All-Silicon Metasurface in the Terahertz Regime

Abstract:A transmissive all-silicon dielectric square metasurface with a side length of 12.4 mm is designed in this paper. At 2.52 terahertz, the normally incident x-polarized Gaussian beam can be shaped into the radially polarized narrow-width annular beam with Bessel-Gaussian amplitude distribution at a propagation distance of 45 mm away from the metasurface. Anisotropic rectangular silicon pillars with different dimensions and rotation angles are arranged on the silicon substrate to manipulate the beam. To suppress the reflection loss, a polarization-independent square silicon pillar array is also proposed, which is patterned at the other side of the substrate. In addition, the errors analysis is also discussed. It is expected that our study may have potential for applying terahertz wave in high-resolution microscopy and capturing particles in three dimensions.

Abstract:All‐dielectric metasurfaces with low‐loss planar photonic subwavelength elements can be freely designed to realize high‐efficiency light wave manipulation. It is highly desirable to achieve multifunctionalities with a single metasurface to further enrich the manipulation of light with metasurfaces for diverse applications. This article demonstrates multifunctional silicon‐based metasurfaces capable of generating versatile wavefronts under different polarization light incidence at visible wavelengths. The polarization‐multiplexed metasurfaces are implemented with rationally arranged anisotropic silicon nanobricks to achieve independent control of orthogonal linearly polarized light waves for multi‐channel functionalities, including polarized beam splitting, opposite charged and different ordered optical vortexes. The polarization‐multiplexed high‐quality silicon metasurfaces have great potential for applications in multi‐channel optical devices with integrated functionality. Multi‐functional silicon metasurfaces are demonstrated for realizing multi‐channel visible light devices by independently controlling the propagation of orthogonal linearly polarized wave. High‐index silicon structures are employed for controllable interfacial phase discontinuity and thus high‐efficiency polarization‐multiplexed all‐dielectric metadevices including multiplexed beam deflectors and multi‐ordered vortex generators.

Abstract:Polarization is one of the most important properties of light, which is also a typical dimension for light field manipulation. With specially designed meta‐atoms and tailorable phase distribution, metasurfaces have been employed to achieve arbitrary polarization state in linear regime. Moreover, metasurface is also a platform for various types of nonlinear light generation, which can be used to realize an integrated polarized light source combined with its powerful capability of polarization manipulation. Here, a nonlinear plasmonic metasurface that is able to simultaneously realize nonlinear light generation and polarization manipulation is demonstrated. Two separated second harmonic (SH) beams with orthogonal circular polarizations are achieved from a linearly polarized fundamental wave (FW), and illuminated by circularly polarized FW the same nonlinear plasmonic metasurface can generate linearly polarized SH, which can be viewed as an SH quarter‐wave plate. Furthermore, arbitrary elliptical polarized SH can also be obtained from properly designed nonlinear metasurfaces. This design provides a new approach for miniaturized light source for special polarization requirement, which may have potential applications in integrated optics.

Abstract:Polarization is a basic characteristic of electromagnetic waves that conveys much optical information owing to its many states.The polarization state is manipulated and controlled for optical information security,optical encryption,and optic-al communication.Metasurface devices provide a new way to manipulate wave-fronts of light.A single ultrathin metasur-face device can generate and modulate several differently polarized light fields,and thus carries optical information in several different channels.Terahertz(THz)waves have become widely used as carrier waves for wireless communica-tion.Compact and functional metasurface devices are in high demand for THz elements and systems.This paper pro-poses a tri-layer metallic THz metasurface for multi-channel polarization generation and phase modulation with a high ef-ficiency of approximately 80%.An azimuthally polarized THz vectorial beam generator is realized and characterized for use as a THz polarization analyzer.The incident polarization angle can be observed graphically with high accuracy.Moreover,a vectorial hologram with eight channels for different linear polarization states is demonstrated experimentally.The information in different holograms can be hidden by choosing the polarization channel for detection.This work con-tributes to achieving multi-functional metasurface in the THz band and can benefit THz communication and optical in-formation security.

Abstract:In this paper, we generated polarization-independent ring-Airy beams by designing metasurfaces that can realize modulations of both phase and amplitude. In numerical simulation, such metasurfaces are designed by placing subwavelength rectangular slits in Au film uniformly. Two orthogonal types of slits, with orientation angles of 45 and −45 degrees, are used to obtain the binary phase profile in the light transmitted from the metasurface under illumination with either right circular polarization (RCP) or left circular polarization (LCP). This satisfies the phase required for Airy beam generation. Meanwhile, the difference between the phase profile under RCP illumination and that under LCP illumination is right 2π, which can be regarded as the same. This makes the metasurface available to generate Airy beams regardless of incident polarization. We also analyzed the auto-focusing, self-healing, and frequency-response properties of the generated Airy beams with different parameters. This work opens up more opportunities for applications of Airy beams.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, metasurfaces have revolutionized conventional bulky optics by providing an effective approach to manipulate optical waves at the subwavelength scale. This advancement holds great potential for compact, multifunctional, and reconfigurable optical devices. Notably, metasurfaces constructed with anisotropic nanostructures have exhibited remarkable capability in manipulating the polarization state of optical waves. Furthermore, they can be employed to achieve independent control of the amplitude and phase of optical waves in different polarization channels. This capability has garnered significant attention from the photonics community due to its unprecedented potential for polarization-selective and -multiplexed optical wave manipulation, offering versatile applications in optical imaging, communication, and detection. This paper reviews the design principles, representative works, and recent advancements in anisotropic nanostructures for optical polarization manipulation, detection, as well as polarization-selective and -multiplexed optical wave manipulation. Personal insights into further developments in this research area are provided.

Abstract:Electromagnetic metasurfaces are structured surfaces consisting of a thin array of subwavelength elements with engineered scattering properties, thus providing a promising means of holographic display by controlling the field distributions. However, the existing metasurface holography has limited capabilities in achieving 3-D fields with simultaneous features of high spatial resolution and energy efficiency due to the design methods. In this work, we present a transmissive metasurface to achieve polarization-dependent field distributions in 3-D space with both high resolution and efficiency. In the design, a new method that utilizes dyadic Green's function (DGF) as the rigorous propagator is used. Using the method, the sources and fields are linked directly and can be located on arbitrary 3-D points with the intermediate spaces being equal or unequal. The design is successfully validated by full-wave simulations and experimental measurements. The broadband simulation results indicate that the design has a bandwidth of 0.8 GHz. This work demonstrates a feasible and simple route of field synthesis for real-world applications that require high resolution, high efficiency, and 3-D scenarios.

Abstract:In this paper, a transmissive metasurface for radially polarized beams generation is proposed in microwave band. The metasurface consists of the designed polarzation conversion meta-atoms excited by linear polarized waves. According to the principle of propagation phase, the transmission phase phase can be realized controlled by changing the length of striplines. By changing the position of the feed point to control the polarization of transmitted waves. Finally, a metasurface consisting of proposed meta-atoms with different geometric dimensions is designed, which can efficiently produce radially polarized beams at 8 GHz.

Abstract:Longitudinal Manipulation of Scalar to Vector Vortex Beams Evolution Empowered by All‐Silicon Metasurfaces In article number 2301368, Yating Zhang, Yun Shen, Jianquan Yao, and colleagues propose a systematic scheme for designing all‐silicon metasurface‐based functional THz devices. Such a strategy demonstrates experimentally the evolutionary trend from the homogeneous to the inhomogeneous polarization states along the propagation direction. The designed minimalist metasurface is believed to open a new window for manipulating inhomogeneous polarization states and provides a fundamental mechanism for developing ultra‐thin, compact, and high‐performance devices with pervasive applicability.

Abstract:Manipulation of polarization states with metasurfaces is a compelling approach for on-chip photonics and portable information processing. Yet it remains challenging to generate different types of polarization states with a single piece of a metasurface. This paper demonstrates a metasurface to resolve this issue, which is made of L-shaped resonators with different geometrical sizes. Each resonator diffracts a right- or left-handed circularly polarized state with an additional geometrical-scaling-induced phase. The type of polarization state of each diffracted beam is determined by the enantiomorphism, size, and spatial sequence of the resonators in the unit cell. The number of the beams is modulated by the geometry and separation of the resonators. We provide examples to illustrate how to achieve the specific number of diffracted beams with the desired polarization states in experiments. We suggest that this strategy can be applied for integrated photonics and portable quantum information processing.
