Abstract:We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:Capacity is the eternal pursuit for communication systems due to the overwhelming demand of bandwidth hungry applications. As the backbone infrastructure of modern communication networks, the optical fiber transmission system undergoes a significant capacity growth over decades by exploiting available physical dimensions (time, frequency, quadrature, polarization and space) of the optical carrier for multiplexing. For each dimension, stringent orthogonality must be guaranteed for perfect separation of independent multiplexed signals. To catch up with the ever-increasing capacity requirement, it is therefore interesting and important to develop new multiplexing methodologies relaxing the orthogonal constraint thus achieving better spectral efficiency and more flexibility of frequency reuse. Inspired by the idea of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme, here we propose a digital domain power division multiplexed (PDM) transmission technology which is fully compatible with current dual polarization (DP) coherent optical communication system. The coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) modulation has been employed owing to its great superiority on high spectral efficiency, flexible coding, ease of channel estimation and robustness against fiber dispersion. And a PDM-DP-CO-OFDM has been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated with 100Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission over 1440km standard single mode fibers (SSMFs). Two baseband quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) OFDM signals are overlaid together with different power levels. After IQ modulation, polarization multiplexing and long distance fiber transmission, the PDM-DP-CO-OFDM signal has been successfully recovered in the typical polarization diversity coherent receiver by successive interference cancellation (SIC) algorithm.

A Novel Wdm-Mdm Pon Scheme Utilizing Self-Homodyne Detection for High-Speed/Capacity Access Networks

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, energy-saving mode-division-multiplexing passive optical network (MDM-PON) scheme utilizing self-homodyne detection for high-speed/capacity access network based on low modal-crosstalk few-mode fiber (FMF) and all-fiber mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX). In the proposed scheme, one of the spatial modes is used to transmit a portion of signal carrier (namely pilot-tone) as the local oscillator (LO), while the others are used for signal-bearing channels. At the receiver, the pilot-tone and the signal can be separated without strong crosstalk and sent to the receiver for coherent detection. The spectral efficiency (SE) is significantly enhanced when multiple spatial channels are used. Meanwhile, the self-homodyne detection scheme can effectively suppress laser phase noise, which relaxes the requirement for the lasers line-width at the optical line terminal or optical network units (OLT/ONUs). The digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver is also simplified since it removes the need for frequency offset compensation and complex phase correction, which reduces the computational complexity and energy consumption. Polarization division multiplexing (PDM) that offers doubled SE is also supported by the scheme. The proposed scheme is scalable to multi-wavelength application when wavelength MUX/DEMUX is utilized. Utilizing the proposed scheme, we demonstrate a proof of concept 4 × 40-Gb/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission over 55-km FMF using low modal-crosstalk two-mode FMF and MUX/DEMUX with error free operation. Compared with back to back case, less than 1-dB Q-factor penalty is observed after 55-km FMF of the four channels. Signal power and pilot-tone power are also optimized to achieve the optimal transmission performance.

Abstract:The unique advantage of orbital angular momentum (OAM) provides a novel approach to breaking through the limitations of high‐capacity and long‐distance transmission in the conventional radio‐overfiber passive optical network (RoF‐PON) hybrid access network. Introducing the OAM division multiplexing (OAM‐DM) based on Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beams into the RoF‐PON, an innovative multidimensional system architecture is proposed, which integrates with polarization‐division multiplexing (PDM), wavelength‐division multiplexing (WDM), and orthogonal frequency‐division multiplexing (OFDM) technologies. Successful long‐distance transmission of both the downstream 40 GHz radio OFDM signal and the upstream 40 Gbps on‐off keying (OOK) signal over 80 km are achieved. Additionally, at the optical network unit side, low‐cost upstream carrier re‐modulation technology and flexible access for both wired and wireless signals are realized. The proposed RoF‐OAM‐DM‐PDM‐WDM‐OFDM‐PON architecture offers a dependable solution for high‐capacity and low‐cost future communication systems, holding great importance in achieving flexible access networks.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel wavelength-division-multiplexing orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing passive-optical-network (WDM-OFDM-PON) architecture with centralized lightwave sources and polarization shift keying (PolSK) multicast overlay. The 10-Gb/s 16QAM-OFDM point to point (P2P) signal, 2.5-Gb/s multicast PolSK signal and 2.5-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) upstream signal are experimentally demonstrated. After transmission over 25km standard single mode fiber (SMF), 1.5dB crosstalk between the downstream signals is eliminated by employing a low pass electrical filter at the PolSK receiver. The power penalty of the upstream OOK signal at BER of 10(-9) is less than 0.1dB.
Dual-Tap Optical-Digital Feedforward Equalization Enabling High-Speed Optical Transmission in IM/DD Systems

Abstract:Intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission is widely adopted for high-speed optical transmission scenarios due to its cost-effectiveness and simplicity. However, as the data rate increases, the fiber chromatic dispersion (CD) would induce a serious power fading effect, and direct detection could generate inter-symbol interference (ISI). Moreover, the ISI becomes more severe with the increase of fiber length, thereby highly restricting the transmission distance of IM/DD systems. This paper proposes a dual-tap optical-digital feedforward equalization (DT-ODFE) scheme, which could effectively compensate for CD-induced power fading while maintaining low cost and simplicity. A theoretical channel response is formulated for IM/DD transmission, incorporating a dual-tap optical equalizer, and the theoretical analysis reveals that for an IM/DD transmission using 1371nm over 10km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), frequency notch is removed from 33.7GHz to 46GHz. Simulation results show that the DT- ODFE achieves an SNR gain of 2.3dB over IM/DD systems with symbol-space feedforward equalizer (FFE) alone. As the fiber length increases to 15 km, DT- ODFE performs well, while FFE, decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) and Volterra nonlinear equalizers (VNLE) all fail to compensate for the power fading and the 7% hard-decision FEC limit is not satisfied. For 200 Gb/s/$\lambda$ PAM-4 over 15km SSMF, results show that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the proposed DT- ODFE with optimal coefficients satisfies the 7% hard-decision FEC limit, which uncovers the great potential of the DT- ODFE for high-speed IM/DD systems in LR/FR scenarios.

Abstract:Future passive optical network (PON) should combine various multiplexing method to realize larger-scale access. In this paper, mode division multiplexed (MDM) as a new multiplexing dimension is proposed, in which both the transmission few-mode fiber and the mode multiplexer/demultiplexer have low mode-crosstalk so that no multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) digital signal processing is required at the receiver. We show by experiments the feasibility of MDM-PON and hybrid MDM-TDM-PON. 10-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) signals are successfully transmitted over 1.8-km 2-mode fiber without MIMO processing.

Abstract:Recently orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) has been proposed in the passive optical network (PON) for downstream and upstream transmissions. Due to its powerful digital signal processing and high flexibility, OFDMA-PON has emerged as a promising candidate for the next-generation optical access networks. In this letter, we propose a cost-effective upstream scheme based on the interleaved frequency-division multiple access (IFDMA), which is a modified form of OFDMA. The IFDMA has lower peak-to-average power ratio and lower computation complexity at the transmitter, which is cost-effective for the optical network unit. Upstream IFDMA transmission is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:A simple high spectral efficiency directly-detected frequency guard band (FGB) free optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM) system is proposed for passive optical network (PON) in this paper. The two main impairments, subcarriers mixing interference (ISMI) caused by square-law detection and frequency selective fading (FSF) deduced from the double side band modulation are mathematically analyzed. To reduce the performance deterioration, static adaptive modulation (SAM) and turbo codes are proposed in this system. A high spectral efficiency FGB-free DD-OOFDM system with 64-QAM (qadrature amplitude modulation) for subcarrier modulation is experimentally demonstrated. Thank to the static adaptive modulation and turbo codes implemented in the digital signal process domain, the system shows its significant robustness to both ISMI and FSF.
Advanced digital signal processing for short-haul and access network

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) has been proved to be a successful technology recently in high speed and high spectrum-efficiency optical short-haul and access network, which enables high performances based on digital equalizations and compensations. In this paper, we investigate advanced DSP at the transmitter and receiver side for signal pre-equalization and post-equalization in an optical access network. A novel DSP-based digital and optical pre-equalization scheme has been proposed for bandwidth-limited high speed short-distance communication system, which is based on the feedback of receiver-side adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 400GE on a single optical carrier based on the highest ETDM 120-GBaud PDM-PAM-4 signal, using one external modulator and coherent detection. A line rate of 480-Gb/s is achieved, which enables 20% forward-error correction (FEC) overhead to keep the 400-Gb/s net information rate. The performance after fiber transmission shows large margin for both short range and metro/regional networks. We also extend the advanced DSP for short haul optical access networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and demonstrate a high speed multi-band CAP-WDM-PON system on intensity modulation, direct detection and digital equalizations. A hybrid modified cascaded MMA post-equalization schemes are used to equalize the multi-band CAP-mQAM signals. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrates 550Gb/s high capacity WDM-PON system with 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, and 10-Gb/s per user in the downstream over 40-km SMF.

Abstract:Wavelength reuse has been proposed as an effective solution to realize colorless optical network units (ONUs) for next-generation passive optical network with simplified maintenance and reduced cost. In this paper, we propose a wavelength reused mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) scheme for bidirectional short-reach optical access network with low mode-crosstalk multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) and few-mode fiber (FMF). In downstream (DS) transmission, one of the spatial modes in FMF is used to transmit optical carriers, while the others are used as DS signal channels. In upstream (US) transmission, the carrier is split to all the ONUs for US remodulation. By utilizing low mode-crosstalk mode MUX/DEMUX and FMF, the carrier and each signal channel can be effectively separated. Compared with other wavelength reused schemes in which the DS and US transmission are modulated in orthogonal dimension, the signal qualities on two transmission directions are independent in the proposed scheme, and symmetrical bidirectional transmission without residual remodulation crosstalk can be achieved. What is more, to reduce bidirectional Rayleigh backscattering noise, we propose to use different optical sidebands for DS and US transmission. With the proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrate symmetrical bidirectional 2 × 12.5-Gb/s quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) intensity-modulation and direct-detection transmission over 11.5-km four-mode FMF. With Rayleigh backscattering noise mitigation, a Q-factor improvement of 2 dB is achieved for the US signal at the DS signal-to-carrier power ratio of -27 dB.

Abstract:Motivated by the robust immunity to interference as well as the higher spectrum efficiency, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely considered as one of the strongest contenders for high-speed Next-Generation Passive Optical Networks (NG-PONs), which satisfies the huge surge in demand for high-speed broadband services. In the other hand, OFDM systems suffer from a high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) at the transmitted signal resulting in signal degradation. The simplest method to deal with the PAPR problem consists in applying deliberate clipping to the transmitted signal which significantly reduces the requirement of the received optical power. In this paper, an analytical evaluation for the performance of an IM/DD optical OFDM system is shown, this is while accounting for clipping distortion and quantification noise caused by the limited bit resolution of DAC converter. Moreover, the paper demonstrates that applying digital signal restoration at the system receiver enables further improvements in the system performances in terms of enhanced effective Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and reduced optical power that is required to achieve specifiedBit-Error-Rate (BER).

Abstract:For the first time, we proposed and demonstrated auxiliary management and control channel (AMCC) in frequency division multiplexing coherent passive optical network (FDM-PON) based on digital subcarriers (DCM) to transmit control information and reduce the latency of signal transmission. We propose an extraction algorithm to detect AMCC signals. A 4-band FDM QPSK coherent PON system of a total 100-Gbps data rate with a 24-Mbps non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal was demonstrated and the system performance at different modulation index (MI) was analyzed.

Abstract:Recently, digital signal processing (DSP) methods have been extensively studied and various DSP-based schemes have been proposed for next-generation passive optical network (PON). In this paper, we combine the time-division-multiplexing (TDM) architecture with advanced DSP methods to achieve high spectrum-efficiency colorless transmission. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), as the original form of various DSP methods with frequency-domain equalization (FDE), is chosen for both upstream and downstream transmissions. In the TDM-PON based on OFDM (TDM-OFDM-PON) architecture, OFDM symbols are transmitted in different time slots instead of on-off-key (OOK) bits in conventional TDM-PON. This architecture can be extended for single-carrier with FDE easily. Due to the same TDMA scheme, it can achieve maximum compatibility with current TDM-PON. A DSP-based evolution scheme from conventional TDM-PON to TDM-OFDM-PON is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by upgrading the optical line terminal (OLT) to support both OOK and OFDM signals, which can maintain the current optical distribution network (ODN) and minimize the impact for the existing service and equipment.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-passive optical network (OFDM-PON) and single-carrier frequency division multiplexing (SCFDM)-PON are promising solutions for future high-speed PON-based access.A polarization division multiplexing scheme with direct detection is proposed for OFDM-PON to effectively reduce bandwidth requirements for components.However, the scheme strictly requires spectrum overlapping of two orthogonal sidebands and the 4×4 multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) algorithm to eliminate complex cross-polarization interference.In this letter, we propose a polarization interleaving (PI) approach that significantly reduces bandwidth requirements for optical and electrical components while achieving a high-flexibility and low-complexity MIMO algorithm.Downstream single sideband PI-SCFDM transmission is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel low-cost radio-over-fiber network architecture with one directly modulated laser and one intensity modulator. By employing an orthogonal frequency division mutiplexing modulation format and frequency quadruple scheme, the bandwidth requirement of the devices and the cost of the system is reduced. Experimental results show that the power penalty for the downlink data after transmission over 20-km single mode optical fiber (SMF)-28 is smaller than 1.3 dB, while for the up-link data, the power penalty after transmission over 20-km SMF-28 is smaller than 0.3 dB.
