Abstract:Visible light communication(VLC)has emerged as a promising communication method in 6G,particularly in the domain of underwater communication.However,because of its intimate coupling to the light-emitting diodes(LED),the transmission rate is limited by the modulation bandwidth and the nonlinearity of the LED.With current device development,LED bandwidth is substantially lower than that of other optical commu-nication devices,necessitating improved spectral effi-ciency and nonlinearity robustness to achieve high-speed transmission.In this paper,we propose a hexagonal con-stellation-based geometrically shaped(GS)32QAM with carrierless amplitude and phase(CAP)modulation for the underwater VLC system.A comprehensive performance comparison of four GS modulation methods,including our proposed hexagonal-32QAM,normal 32QAM,square-32QAM and 32APSK is investigated in both theory and experiment.The hexagonal-32QAM with a modified bin-ary switching coding(BSC)can obtain a Q factor gain of 0.44 dB,and a data rate improvement of 25 Mb/s com-pared with Gary coding based normal 32QAM.The ex-perimentally results illustrate the feasibility of geometric shaping 32QAM in underwater visible light communica-tion.

Abstract:Visible light communication(VLC) employing light-emitting diodes(LED) as light source has become a promising field for underwater wireless communication. However, due to the complex underwater environment and scattering, absorption and diffusion effects during optical transmission in water, the underwater VLC system will suffer from poor SNR and highly nonlinear distortion. In this paper, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel Square Geometrical Shaping(SGS) odd order QAM discrete multitone(DMT) and carrier-less amplitude phase(CAP) modulation based VLC system. Unlike to traditional odd order QAM constellation aiming at the minimum Euclidean distance but without Gray coding at edge constellation points, the new SGS constellation boasts acceptable Euclidean distance and thoroughly Gray coding for every constellation point. Therefore, the system performance can be effectively enhanced by SGS constellation for low SNR and high nonlinearity cases. Both numerical and experimental results verify that SGS 32QAM and 128QAM constellations can outperform traditional QAM constellation by mitigating nonlinearity in a blue LED based underwater and free space VLC system using DMT modulation or CAP modulation. By employing SGS 128QAM, we successfully demonstrate 2.534Gb/s 1.2meter underwater transmission at the driving voltage of 1.1Vpp.
Mitigating Nonlinearity Characteristics of Gray-Coding Square 8QAM in Underwater VLC System

Abstract:Visible light communication(VLC) has become a state-of-art technology in wireless communication which take the advantages of unlimited bandwidth, green source with no pollution, combination communication with illumination. However, when we need to transmit for a long distance or at a high data rate, the underwater visible light communication(UVLC) system will suffer from severe nonlinearity. In this paper, we proposed a gray-coding square (GCS) 8QAM based underwater VLC system which performs better than normal rectangular QAM and circular(7,1) 8QAM. Different from circular (7,1) which own the maximum minimum Euclidean distance, the GCS 8QAM own the thoroughly gray-coding of every constellation point. The GCS8QAM can achieve a higher data rate of 1.62Gb/s at 240mA bias current and 1.4Vpp than circular(7,1) and rectangle, and more operation range at bigger bias current and Vpp, which prove that GCS-8QAM is more suitable for nonlinear situations and higher data rate transmission in UVLC system.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed an underwater visible light communication system utilizing QAM-DMT and Multi-PIN reception to do the MRC receiving. The transmitter is a 600 mu m x 600 mu m green-emitting silicon substrate LED which has a peak emission wavelength of 521 nm. We study the effect of quiescent working point of the LED, the zero-padding number, the ISFA tap number and the ratio of two receivers on the BER performance of our VLC system. We notice that the ratio of two receivers can remarkably affect the performance of our system. We also measured the BER performance versus the bandwidth of the signal in 32QAM, 64QAM and 128QAM modulation format and we find the highest data rate of our system can reach 2.175 Gb/s. As far as we know, it is the highest data rate in under pure water VLC system using commercial LED and a PIN receiver.

In this study, to improve the performance of a UVLC system under such conditions, we propose a novel nonlinear hybrid modulation scheme named two-dimensional bit allocation (2DBA). By comparing the performance of 2DBA with the famous Levin-Campello (LC) algorithm and the quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)–based time-domain hybrid modulation (TDHQ) algorithm, we have proved by analysis and experiment that 2DBA can outperform the power allocation–based LC algorithm and the TDHQ algorithm below the 3.8×10−3 hard decision forward error correction threshold (HD-FEC) when the system has a severe nonlinear effect and ISI. The data rate 3.24 Gb/s of 2DBA is measured after 1.2 m underwater transmission; as far as we know, this is the highest data rate reported in a blue LED chip based UVLC system.

Abstract:We first study the transmission property of red light in water in terms of extinction coefficient and channel bandwidth via Monte Carlo simulation, with an interesting finding that red light outperforms blue-green light in highly turbid water. We further propose and experimentally demonstrate a broadband underwater wireless optical communication system based on a simple and cost-effective TO56 red-light laser diode. We demonstrate a 1.324-Gb/s transmission at a bit error rate (BER) of 2.02 × 10-3 over a 6-m underwater channel, by using 128-QAM OFDM signals and a low-cost 150-MHz positive-intrinsic-negative photodetector, with a record spectral efficiency higher than 7.32 bits/Hz. By using an avalanche photodetector and 32-QAM OFDM signals, we have achieved a record bit rate of 4.883 Gb/s at a BER of 3.20 × 10-3 over a 6-m underwater channel.
The Phase Estimation of Geometric Shaping 8-QAM Modulations Based on K-means Clustering in Underwater Visible Light Communication

Abstract:With more and more human underwater activities carrying out, underwater visible light communication has received increasing attention worldwide. To solve the problem of noise and nonlinearity in underwater visible light communication systems, we proposed a phase deviation correction algorithm based on K-means clustering to correct the phase deviation of special-shaped 8-QAM constellations. The experimental results indicate the performance of the circle has the maximum improvement after using the phase deviation correction algorithm. Before the use of the K-means phase correction algorithm, the highest data rate that circle can achieve is 1.3875 Gbps. The highest data rate increases to 1.4625 Gbps after applying the algorithm.

Abstract:Since visible-light communication (VLC) has become an increasingly promising candidate for 6G, the field of underwater visible-light communication (UVLC) has also garnered significant attention. However, the impairments introduced by practical systems and the time-varying underwater channels always limit the performance of underwater visible-light communication. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an autoencoder-based geometric shaping model (AEGSM) framework to jointly optimize quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals at the symbol-wise and bit-wise levels for underwater visible-light communication. Unlike traditional geometric shaping (GS) methods, which only give theoretically optimal shaping solutions, our framework can always obtain the globally optimal shaping scheme for a specific channel condition or different application scenarios. In our AEGSM framework, an autoencoder is used to find the optimal shaping scheme at the symbol-wise level and a revised pairwise optimization (RPO) algorithm is applied to achieve bit-wise optimization. In a real UVLC system, 2.05 Gbps transmission is achieved under the hard decision–forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10−3 by employing the autoencoder-based 8QAM (AE-8QAM) optimized by the AEGSM, which is 103 Mbps faster than the Norm-8QAM. The AE-8QAM also shows its resistance to nonlinearity and enables the UVLC system to operate within a larger dynamic range of driving voltages. The results substantiate the potential and practicality of the proposed AEGSM framework in the realm of underwater visible-light communication.

Abstract:Light-emitting diode (LED)-based visible light communication (VLC) has become a potential candidate for next-generation ultra-high-speed indoor wireless communication. In this paper, four special-shaped 8-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations are investigated in a single-carrier VLC system. It is numerically verified and experimentally demonstrated that circular (7,1) shows obvious superiority in the performance of the dynamic range of signal voltage peak-to-peak (vpp) value and bit error rate (BER). Next best is rectangular, followed by triangular; circular (4,4) has the worst performance. A data rate of 1.515 Gbit/s is successfully achieved by circular (7,1) employing a red chip LED over 0.5 m indoor free space transmission below a BER threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). Compared with circular (4,4), the traditional 8-QAM constellation, circular (7,1) provides a wider dynamic range of signal vpp, a higher data rate, and a longer transmission distance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first investigation into the performance differences of special-shaped 8-QAM constellations in a highspeed, single-carrier VLC system, and the results comprehensively demonstrate that circular (7,1) is the optimal option. Abstract:Next-generation visible light communication (VLC) is envisioned to evolve into a high-speed and multi-user system. In this work, a 75-µm single layer quantum dot (QD) micro-LED was fabricated, packaged and used to experimentally demonstrate a 3-meter QAM-OFDMA VLC system affording multiple users with a 1.06-GHz modulation bandwidth. The OFDMA system realized data rates of 1.2 Gbps and 750 Mbps with a BER of 0 and 3.6×10−3 for two independent users with a 1:1 bandwidth ratio, respectively. Additional sub-carrier allocation strategies and scenarios of 2∼6 users have been further evaluated, and all proposed strategies reach the sum-rate of beyond 1.41 Gbps while satisfying the forward error correction (FEC) criteria.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a large-coverage underwater visible light communication (VLC) system utilizing quadrature amplitude modulation-discrete multitone (QAM-DMT) and integrated 2×2 positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) array reception to achieve equal-gain combining (EGC) receiving. The transmitter consists of a lens group and blue-emitting silicon substrate light-emitting diode peak emission, the wavelength of which is 458 nm. After 1.2 m underwater transmission, a data rate of over 1 Gbit/s is successfully achieved with a spot of 25 cm in diameter and 11 cm alignment tolerances. A data rate of 1.8 Gbit/s is also achieved when using parallel light reception. Both are the highest data rates to our knowledge so far in a large-coverage underwater VLC system, which shows the benefit and feasibility of using an integrated PIN array with QAM-DMT modulation and EGC.
Square Geometrical Shaping 128QAM Based Time Domain Hybrid Modulation in Visible Light Communication System

Abstract:We proposed two kinds of visible light communication（VLC） systems which respectively based on 64 QAM/square geometrical shaping（SGS） 128 QAM time domain hybrid modulation scheme（SGSHY） and 64 QAM/128 QAM time domain hybrid modulation scheme（REGHY）. These two systems can operate around specific forward error correction（FEC） threshold and maximize the achievable information rate（AIR） of the system. The principles of SGSHY and REGHY are proposed in detail, which has very low computation complexity compared with probabilistic shaping. The SGSHY outperforms REGHY at high peak to peak voltage（Vpp）. Experimental results show that at high Vpp like 1.4 V, which means the system is suffering from high nonlinear distortion, the AIR of SGSHY outperforms that of REGHY by 0.12 Gb/s at the 2×10-2 FEC threshold. The AIR of the REGHY is at most 0.36 Gb/s higher than that of 64 QAM at 0.8 V Vpp and 7% FEC threshold, while the（achievable information rate） AIR of SGSHY is at most 0.40 Gb/s higher than that of 64 QAM at 1.4 V Vpp and 20% FEC threshold.

Abstract:We propose a flexible method for multiple feature frequencies-based bridge T hardware pre-equalizer that can better match the channel of an LED-based visible light communication (VLC) system and dramatically increase the system capacity. Based on this method, three kinds of equalizers are fabricated with the same maximum attenuation but different envelopes of frequency response. The performance of the three equalizers is experimentally compared in an underwater VLC system. The results show that the different shapes of the pre equalizer can significantly impact the system SNR as well as the system capacity. By utilizing one of the optimally designed equalizers, an overall data rate of 3.075 Gb/s underwater VLC system can be achieved based on 64 QAM discrete multitone modulation over 1.2-m water channel. Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) using high power light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed communication becomes a new area which draws increasing attention. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed VLC system based on Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) for the first time. We change the value of different factors and compare the performance of the system in order to find the effect of different factors. The experimental results show that the bit error rate (BER) for an overall 1.2Gb/s 64QAM and 32QAM signal over 40 cm transmission can be under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10 -3 . Meanwhile, we clearly demonstrate the benefit and feasibility of DFT-S OFDM modulation format for the high speed VLC system.
