Abstract:In this work, we have proposed and fabricated a novel constant-cladding tapered-core (CCTC) Yb-doped fiber, which has a constant cladding diameter of ~600 μm and spindle-shaped core diameter with a ~20.8 μm at both ends and ~36.0 μm in the middle. Based on this CCTC fiber, an all-fiberized laser oscillator was constructed and investigated experimentally. The output power was scaled to 1514 W with an optical-to-optical efficiency of ~64%, and the measured beam quality (M2 factor) is ~1.6. The further power scaling is promising by optimizing the structure of the CCTC fiber.

Abstract:In this Letter, we demonstrate a monolithic high-power master oscillator power amplifier by using a home-made double-clad tapered Yb-doped fiber (T-YDF) with an input end of ∼20/400 µm and an output end of ∼30/600 µm. Thanks to perfect core/cladding matching with the fiber components at both ends of the T-YDF, the laser is pumped bidirectionally and an output power of over 4 kW with a high slope efficiency of 84.1% and excellent beam quality M2 ∼ 1.46 is achieved. In contrast to previous work on common fiber lasers, experimental results also reveal that the co-pump scheme has a higher transverse mode instability (TMI) threshold and power-boosting capability than that of a counter-pump scheme. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest output power demonstrated to date from such a T-YDF with excellent beam quality. This work indicates the great potential of the T-YDF to realize further power scaling, high laser efficiency, and excellent beam quality in high-power fiber lasers.

Abstract:In the power scaling of monolithic fiber lasers, the fiber nonlinear effects and transverse mode instability are main limitations. The tapered gain fiber has a longitudinally varying mode area, which has the advantage of mitigating fiber nonlinear effects. However, the transverse mode instability (TMI) was seldom reported in the tapered fiber lasers at high average power levels. In this work, we have constructed a monolithic tapered ytterbium-doped fiber laser oscillator and investigated the laser oscillator performance with respective 976 nm and 915 nm pump, especially on the aspects of the TMI. The double cladding tapered ytterbium-doped fiber has a narrow end of similar to 20/400 mu m and a wide end of similar to 30/600 mu m. Fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) are respectively inscribed on double cladding fibers with core/inner cladding diameter of 20/400 mu m and 30/400 mu m to match with the narrow and wide end of the tapered ytterbium-doped fiber. When 915 nm pump is employed, the TMI occurs at the output power of similar to 1350 W. The output power is further scaled to a maximum of 1720 W. The M-2 factor of the output laser is similar to 2.1 and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the signal laser is similar to 3.6 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest average power for the tapered ytterbium-doped fiber lasers. Abstract:An all-fiber, high-power, spectrally clean, single-mode Yb-doped fiber oscillator at 1120 nm wavelength is demonstrated. By optimizing the reflectivity of the output coupler and the length of the gain fiber, an output power of 322 W and an optical efficiency of 71% have been achieved. The output power, spectra, and bandwidth broadening are presented and briefly discussed. The power scaling capability of the cavity is analyzed on the basis of the thermal effect, and a maximal thermal-damage-free output power of 450 W could be expected.

Abstract:We present an all-fiber single frequency high-power amplifier using tapered ytterbium-doped fiber (T-YDF) based on a master oscillator power amplification (MOPA) scheme. Different from previous laser amplifiers, the monolithic system is all-fiber-integrated, employing a large mode area (LMA) T-YDF and co-pump scheme. The LMA T-YDF is 7 m long and its core/inner cladding diameters are 20.4/237.1 μm and 46.9/579.9 μm in the input port and output port, respectively. In experiment, the laser amplifier is shown to generate up to 53 W of single frequency laser with slope efficiency of 57.7%, which indicates more than a two times increase of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold than common LMA fibers with core/inner cladding diameters of 20/400 μm. At the highest output power, the M2 factor is measured to be 1.25 and 1.20 in the X and Y directions. Results show that this T-YDF can be scaled up to even higher power when other SBS suppression methods are employed simultaneously.

Abstract:Abstract Power scaling based on traditional ytterbium-doped fibers (YDFs) is limited by optical nonlinear effects and transverse mode instability (TMI) in high-power fiber lasers. Here, we propose a novel long tapered fiber with a constant cladding and tapered core (CCTC) along its axis direction. The tapered-core region of the fiber is designed to enhance the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) threshold and suppress higher-order mode resonance in the laser cavity. The CCTC YDF was fabricated successfully with a modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) method combined with solution doping technology, which has a cladding diameter of 400 μm and a varying core with a diameter of ~24 μm at both ends and ~31 μm in the middle. To test the performance of the CCTC fiber during high-power operation, an all-fiber laser oscillator based on a CCTC YDF was investigated experimentally. As a result, a maximum output power of 3.42 kW was achieved with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 55.2%, although the TMI effect was observed at an output power of ~3.12 kW. The measured beam quality ( M 2 factor) was ~1.7, and no sign of the Raman component was observed in the spectrum. We believe that CCTC YDF has great potential to simultaneously mitigate the SRS and TMI effects, and further power scaling is promising by optimizing the structure of the YDF.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a kW continuous-wave ytterbium-doped all-fiber laser oscillator with 7×1 fused fiber bundle combiner, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and double-clad gain fiber fabricated by corresponding technologies. The results of experiment that the oscillator had operated at 1079.48nm with 80.94% slope efficiency without the influence of temperature and non-linear effects indicate that fiber components and gain fiber were suitable to high power environment. No evidence of the signal power roll-over showed that this oscillator possess the capacity to highest output with available pump power.

Abstract:Hundreds of picosecond pulses amplifier based on Yb-doped tapered fiber can serve as the primary power amplifier stage for an all-fiber and polarization-maintained picosecond pulse laser system. Here, we report a high-power narrow-linewidth amplifier stage by using the Yb-doped tapered fiber. In the regime, we have demonstrated amplification of 201.4 ps pulses centered at 1031.4 nm with a spectral width of 0.54 nm to 105 W average power at a repetition rate of 29.3 MHz. The picosecond pulses had a high beam quality with a measured M2 value of 1.36 ∼ 1.51, and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency reached 56 %. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a high-power amplifier based on Yb-doped tapered fiber, capable of amplifying hundreds of picosecond pulses beyond the hectowatt-level average power, while maintaining high beam quality. This achievement highlights the immense potential of Yb-doped tapered fiber in the field of picosecond pulse power amplification. At last, we have refined the model for the transmission and amplification of picosecond pulses in Yb-doped tapered optical fibers, thereby enhancing simulation accuracy by 8 % and providing valuable references for the in-depth research of tapered fiber pulse amplifiers.

120 W Monolithic Yb-Doped Fiber Oscillator at 1150 Nm

Abstract:We present experimental results on a high-power, diode-pumped, 1150 nm Yb-doped fiber (YDF) oscillator in an all-fiber configuration. A cut-back method is used to investigate the impacts of YDF length on the key performances of the oscillator, including parasitic lasing threshold, spectral evolution, and laser efficiency. Discrepancies of the 1150 nm laser's output characteristics with different fiber Bragg grating reflectivity are also analyzed. A record power of 120 W is obtained when a length of 7 m YDF is utilized, with a slope efficiency of 54.5% with respect to injected pump power. The threshold of parasitic lasing decreases with the YDF length and possible explanations of this unexpected phenomenon are discussed in detail. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this fast track communication, we realized a high energy and peak power broadband (Δλ = 10 nm) all-fiber Yb fiber amplifier chain for the generation of pulses at a wavelength near 1.064 μm, which can possibly be applied in high peak power systems such as high power fiber-laser-driven extreme-ultraviolet lithography or fiber-based inertial confinement fusion (ICF). This system is capable of yielding 31 mJ, 12 ns pulses with peak power above a megawatt at a repetition rate of 20 Hz. Also, to make this system more applicable, a large mode combiner is made to realize an all-fiber structure. Since the system is operated at a low repetition rate, in order to suppress the ASE built between pulse intervals, multi-stage pulse pump technology is applied. Amplification characteristics in the condition of different pump widths were measured.

Abstract:The all-fiber high-power linearly polarized single-frequency fiber laser based on the polarization-maintaining tapered Yb-doped fiber (T-YDF) is systematically studied. As a result, a 300 W-level stable output with linear polarization and nearly diffraction-limited beam quality is demonstrated. In particular, the overall properties of the transverse mode instability (MI) effect in such a single-frequency laser system are discussed in detail for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, including temporal, frequency, polarization, and spatial domains. Furthermore, the beam pointing error taking the MI effect into account is investigated. Theoretical analyses covering both stimulated Brillouin scattering and the MI effects reveal the great potential of the T-YDF for further power scaling as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe an all fiber high peak power master oscillation amplifier at 1064 nm center wavelength generated in Yb-doped fiber-based experimental setup. The experiment using two stages of single-mode amplifiers as a cascade structure to prevent the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) caused by weak power of the semiconductor seed. The four-stage fiber amplifier is used to boost the output power up to 6.98 W, the output realized the repetition frequency of 25 kHz ∼ 200 kHz continuous tunable with narrow pulse width of 1.2 ns, the maximum peak power can reach 233 kW, the ASE and nonlinear effect can be effectively suppressed, the emitted beam exhibiting near-Gaussian, single-transverse-mode profile of M2 < 1.3.

Abstract:An all-fiberized, laser-diode-pumped, high-power, 1120-nm Yb-doped fiber laser with master oscillator power amplifier configuration was demonstrated. The seed was a 178-W single-mode fiber laser with an optical efficiency of nearly 70%. An amplifier stage was built to boost the power to 309 W with the slope efficiency of 80%. The M-2 factors, measured in the end of the amplifier at output power of 253 W, are 2.45 and 2.82 in x- and y-directions, respectively. A numerical model was also proposed to evaluate the ability of seed power level in suppressing amplified spontaneous emission in the fiber amplifier. The result indicates that the ratio of the pump power and seed power should not be higher than four for our amplifier if there is no special design to suppress amplified spontaneous emission.

Abstract:In recent years, multi-wavelength lasers have attracted much attention due to their wide applications in various fields. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate a high-power multi-wavelength Yb-doped fiber laser with the aid of an acoustic-optic tunable filter, in which the wavelength interval, the intensity of each channel, and the number of lasing channels can be tuned independently. As a result, the operating wavelength tuning range covers 1040.0 to 1090.0 nm and the maximal output power reaches 15.7 W, which is higher than the previous reports by more than three orders of magnitude. The wavelength interval can be adjusted from 2.6 to 50 nm and the spectral profile can be arbitrarily controlled. Furthermore, the number of wavelength channels can be adjusted from 1 to 4. This work will provide a reference for achieving high-power spectral-flexible fiber sources.

Abstract:A linearly polarized monolithic fiber laser based on a master oscillator power amplifier structure with a master oscillator and a one-stage power amplifier is reported. We design a homemade oscillator based on the theory that, in the coiled gain fiber, the higher modes and the polarized mode of the fundamental mode along the fast axis are suppressed effectively because of their obviously higher bend loss than that of the polarized mode of the fundamental mode along the slow axis. The oscillator operates at 1080 nm, launching a 30 W seed laser with a high polarization extinction ratio of 19 dB into the power amplifier via a mode field adapter. The power amplifier utilizes Yb-doped polarization-maintaining fiber of 20/400 μm, which produces nearly diffraction-limited output power of about 1.5 kW with an optical-optical efficiency of 81.5% and a polarization extinction ratio of 13.8 dB. Both the M(x)² factor and the M(y)² factor of the collimated beam are measured to be about 1.2. The spectral width of the output power is broadened approximately linearly, and the full width at half maximum of the spectrum at the maximum output power is about 5.8 nm. It is known as the highest linearly polarized output power to the best of our knowledge.
Towards Power Improvement of All-Fiber Laser Oscillators with 30 Μm-Core Yb-doped Fibers by Suppressing Transverse Mode Instability

Abstract:In this work, the transverse mode instability (TMI) behaviors in high-power all-fiber laser oscillators based on the ytterbium (Yb)-doped fiber (YDF) with a core diameter of 30 mu m have been experimentally investigated for the first time. We have constructed all-fiber laser oscillators with the YDF with core/inner-cladding diameter of 30/400 mu m and 30/600 mu m, and investigated the corresponding TMI thresholds respectively. Experimental results manifest that the YDF with the larger cladding diameter corresponds to a higher TMI threshold for the two types of YDF with 30 mu m core diameter. Compared with the 30/400 mu m fiber, the 30/600 mu m fiber can improve the TMI threshold by 2.0 times in the co-pumping configuration. By adopting bidirectional pumping configuration in the 30/600 mu m fiber oscillator, a maximum output power is scaled to similar to 3.6 kW without any sign of TMI, and no Raman Stokes light is observed in the output spectra. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of high-power all-fiber laser oscillators based on commercial 30/600 mu m YDF. The experimental results show an excellent feasibility of all-fiber laser oscillators with large core and cladding diameter fiber for high-power operation.
Femtosecond Yb-doped Tapered Fiber Pulse Amplifiers with Peak Power of over Hundred Megawatts

Abstract:Ultrafast fiber lasers combining high peak power and excellent beam quality in the 1-µm wavelength range have been explored to applications in industry, medicine and fundamental science. Here, we report generation of a high-energy sub 300 fs polarization maintaining fiber chirped pulse amplification (CPA) system by using a Yb-doped large mode area tapered polarization maintaining (PM) optical fiber with the core/cladding diameters of 35/250 µm at the thin end and 56/400 µm at the thick end. The taper fiber design features a confined core for selective gain amplification and multi-layer cladding for enhanced suppression of higher order modes. In this regime, we have demonstrated 266 fs pulse amplification with peak power of up to 132 MW at a repetition rate of 2 MHz and high beam quality with measured M2 value of 1.1∼1.3. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest peak power reported in such tapered Yb-doped fiber (T-YDF) amplifier in the femtosecond regime. This work indicates the great potential of the T-YDF to realize further power scaling, high laser efficiency, and excellent beam quality in high-power femtosecond fiber lasers.

Abstract:In order to balance the mitigation of transverse mode instability and stimulated Raman scattering effect in the high power fiber lasers, a specially designed Yb-doped fiber, named spindle-shaped Yb-doped fiber, was fabricated with a core/cladding diameter of 20/400 µm at both ends and 30/600 µm in the middle. Based on this fiber, an all-fiber laser oscillator was built and over 3 kW near-single-mode (M2 factor ∼1.3) laser was achieved with an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 78.4%. While operating at the maximum power, the transverse mode instability is well mitigated and the stimulated Raman scattering effect is well suppressed (>34dB lower than signal laser). Further power scaling is promising by optimizing the structure of the Yb-doped fiber.
550 W single frequency fiber amplifiers emitting at 1030 nm based on a tapered Yb-doped fiber

Abstract:In this paper, we report a high power single frequency 1030 nm fiber laser with near-diffraction-limited beam quality based on a polarization-maintaining tapered Yb-doped fiber (T-YDF). The T-YDF has advantages of effectively suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) while maintaining good beam quality. As a result, a record output power of 379 W single frequency, linearly polarized, nearly single-mode fiber amplifier operating at 1030 nm is demonstrated. The polarization extinction ratio is as high as 16.3 dB, and the M-2 is measured to be 1.12. Further, the dependence of the thermal-induced mode instability (TMI) threshold on the polarization state of an input signal laser is investigated for the first time. By changing the polarization state of the injected seed laser, the output power can increase to 550 W while the beam quality can be maintained well (M-2 = 1.47). The slope efficiency of the whole amplifier is about 80%. No sign of SBS appears even at the highest output power and the further brightness scaling of both situations is limited by the TMI effect. To the best of our knowledge, this result is the highest output power of all-fiberized single frequency fiber amplifiers.
