Abstract:Photonic quantum technologies have been extensively studied in quantum information science, owing to the high-speed transmission and outstanding low-noise properties of photons. However, applications based on photonic entanglement are restricted due to the diffraction limit. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time the maintaining of quantum polarization entanglement in a nanoscale hybrid plasmonic waveguide composed of a fiber taper and a silver nanowire. The transmitted state throughout the waveguide has a fidelity of 0.932 with the maximally polarization entangled state Φ(+). Furthermore, the Clauser, Horne, Shimony, and Holt (CHSH) inequality test performed, resulting in value of 2.495 ± 0.147 > 2, demonstrates the violation of the hidden variable model. Because the plasmonic waveguide confines the effective mode area to subwavelength scale, it can bridge nanophotonics and quantum optics and may be used as near-field quantum probe in a quantum near-field micro/nanoscope, which can realize high spatial resolution, ultrasensitive, fiber-integrated, and plasmon-enhanced detection.

Anisotropic Mode Excitations and Enhanced Quantum Interference in Quantum Emitter-Metasurface Coupled Systems

Abstract:This study proposes a nanophotonic structure that supports quantum interference (QI) between orthogonal decay channels in multilevel quantum emitters within the framework of the quantum master equation. The Green functions of the electric field are obtained by applying boundary conditions in the presence of two-dimensional metasurfaces. We demonstrate distinct in-plane excitation features of the surface plasmon modes (SPMs) with the anisotropic metasurfaces tailored to conductivity components. In particular, we observed that the Purcell factor of transitions with orthogonal polarizations experiences unequal enhancements, owing to the anisotropic propagation of the SPMs. This property depends only on the anisotropy of the metasurfaces; thus, it is easily manipulated. Using this platform and considering experimentally achievable material parameters, we predict a strong interference effect in three-level quantum emitters. In principle, this enables the generation of maximum QI. Our study provides a method for realizing QI systems and has potential applications in highly integrated, tuneable quantum devices.

Abstract:An experimentally feasible configuration of a prism coupler with an electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) medium layer, e.g., a semiconductor-quantum-dot (SQD) medium, deposited upon its prism base is suggested for generating tunable surface-plasmon-polariton resonance. Such surface-plasmon-polariton resonance and optical excitation of a surface plasmon wave can be manipulated by switchable quantum interference among SQD multilevel transitions driven by two external control fields. When an incident probe field is coupled into a surface plasmon wave excitation mode, the surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) resonance at the interface between the SQD medium layer and the substrate will arise, and the quantum-coherently controllable reflection spectrum of the probe field on the prism base can be achieved. In this process, destructive and constructive quantum interference (determined by the intensity ratio of the two external control fields) in the SQD multilevel system plays a key role for achieving the tunable reflection spectrum. The EIT-based surface-plasmon-polariton resonance presented here will have three characteristics (some of them would be attractive): (i) switchable quantum interference exhibited by surface plasmon wave excitation, (ii) quantum-coherently controllable surface plasmon polaritons by external optical fields, (iii) surface wave sensitive to dispersion of the SQD quantum coherent medium. Such an effect of controllable optical response based on the quantum-interference switchable surface-plasmon-polariton resonance in the EIT-prism coupler may find some potential applications in design of new photonic and quantum optical devices.

Abstract:Plasmonics could provide compact and powerful solutions for manipulating light in deep-subwavelength dimensions, which is promising for a great range of nanophotonic technologies such as plasmonic rulers and sensors. However, the effective area of enhanced localized field induced by surface plasmon polaritons is typically restricted to the structural boundaries. In this work, we propose a method to generate high quality-factor extended electromagnetic fields via hybridizing the super-radiant state and the quasi bound state in the continuum of graphene metasurfaces. The coupling interaction involved operates as a three-level system with multiple sharp resonances immune to the polarization, which holds great promise for developing nanodevices with high sensing capacity in two dimensions.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polariton has attracted more and more attention and has been studied extensively in the recent decades, owing to its ability to confine the electro-magnetic field to a sub-wavelength scale near the metal-dielectric interface. On one hand, the tightly confined surface plasmonic modes can reduce the size of integrated optical device beyond the diffraction limit; on the other hand, it provides an approach to enhancing the interaction between light and matter. With the development of experimental and numerical simulation techniques, its investigation at a quantum level has become possible. In the recent experiments, scientists have realized quantum interference between single plasmons in a nanoscale waveguide circuit and achieved the strong coupling between photons and single molecules by using plasmonic structure, which demonstrates its superiority over the traditional optics. Here, we review the theoretical and experimental researches of surface plasmon polariton in the field of quantum information processing. First, we introduce the experiments on the basic quantum properties of surface plasmons, including the preservation of photonic entanglement, wave-particle duality and quantum statistical property. Second, we review the research work relating to the generation, manipulation and detection of surface plasmons in a quantum plasmonic integrated circuit. Then, we present the research of the interaction between surface plasmons and single quantum emitters and its potential applications. Finally, we make a discussion on how the intrinsic loss affects the quantum interference of single plasmons and the coupling between quantum emitters. The collision and combination of quantum optical and plasmonic fields open up possibilities for investigating the fundamental quantum physical properties of surface plasmons. It can be used to make ultra-compact quantum photonic integrated circuits and enhance the interaction strength between photons and quantum emitters.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (plasmons) are a combination of light and a collective oscillation of the free electron plasma at metal-dielectric interfaces. This interaction allows sub-wavelength confinement of light, beyond the diffraction limit inherent to dielectric structures. The resulting electromagnetic fields are more intense and the strength of optical interactions between metallic structures and light-sources or detectors can be increased. Plasmons maintain non-classical photon statistics and preserve entanglement on plasmon-assisted transmission through thin, patterned metallic films or weakly confining waveguides. For quantum applications it is essential that plasmons behave as indistinguishable quantum particles. Here we report on a quantum interference experiment in a nanoscale plasmonic circuit consisting of an on-chip plasmon beam splitter with integrated superconducting single-photon detectors to allow efficient single plasmon detection. We demonstrate quantum mechanical interaction between pairs of indistinguishable plasmons by observing Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, a hallmark non-classical effect which is the basis of linear optics-based quantum computation. Our work shows that it is feasible to shrink quantum optical experiments to the nanoscale and demonstrates a promising route for sub-wavelength quantum optical networks.

Quantum Interfaces Using Nanoscale Surface Plasmons

Abstract:The strong coupling between individual optical emitters and propagating surface plasmons confined to a conducting nanotip make this system act as an ideal interface for quantum networks, through which a stationary qubit and a flying photon (surface plasmon) qubit can be interconverted via a Raman process. This quantum interface paves the way for many essential functions of a quantum network, including sending, receiving, transferring, swapping, and entangling qubits at distributed quantum nodes as well as a deterministic source and an efficient detector of a single-photon. Numerical simulation shows that this scheme is robust against experimental imperfections and has high fidelity. Furthermore, being smaller this interface would significantly facilitate the scalability of quantum computers.
Subradiant entanglement in plasmonic nanocavities

Abstract:Plasmonic nanocavities are known for their extreme field enhancement and sub-wavelength light confinement in gaps of just a few nanometers. Pairing this with the ability to host quantum emitters, they form highly promising platforms to control or engineer quantum states at room temperature. Here, we use the lossy nature of plasmonic nanocavities to form sub-radiant entangled states between two or more quantum emitters, that persist for $\sim 100$ times longer than the plasmonic excitation. We develop a theoretical description that directly links quantum variables to experimentally measurable quantities, such as the extinction cross-section, and unlike previous studies includes plasmonic excitations necessary to resonantly form subradiant states. This work paves the way towards engineering quantum entangled states in ambient conditions with plasmonic nanocavities, for potential applications such as rapid quantum memories, quantum communications and sensors.

Abstract:The interactions between surface plasmons (SPs) in metal nanostructures and excitons in quantum emitters (QEs) lead to many interesting phenomena and potential applications that are strongly dependent on the quantum yield of SPs. The difficulty in distinguishing all the possible exciton recombination channels hinders the experimental determination of SP quantum yield. Here, we experimentally measured for the first time the quantum yield of single SPs generated by the exciton plasmon coupling in a system composed of a single quantum dot and a silver nanowire (NW). By utilizing the SP guiding property of the NW, the decay rates of all the exciton recombination channels, i.e., direct free space radiation channel, SP generation channel, and nonradiative damping channel, are quantitatively obtained. It is determined that the optimum emitter-NW coupling distance for the largest SP quantum yield is about 10 nm, resulting from the different distance-dependent decay rates of the three channels. These results are important for manipulating the coupling between plasmonic nanostructures and QEs and developing on-chip quantum plasmonic devices for potential nanophotonic and quantum information applications.
Taming plasmonic nanocavities for subradiant entanglement

Abstract:Recent rapid advances in quantum nanoplasmonics offer the potential for accessing quantum phenomena at room temperature. Despite this, entangled states have not yet been realised, and remain an outstanding challenge. In this work, we demonstrate how entanglement emerges in plasmonic nanocavities, which are inherently multi-mode, and demonstrate the conditions necessary for entanglement to persist. We find that, in general, these conditions are broken due to coupling with multiple plasmonic modes of different parity. We address this challenge with a new nanocavity design that supports high selective coupling to a single mode, enabling the robust generation of subradiant entanglement in nanoplasmonics. Our results open exciting prospects for leveraging simple plasmonic setups in ambient conditions for applications in quantum communication, sensing and rapid quantum memories.

Abstract:The extraordinary optical properties of surface plasmons in metal nanostructures provide the possibilities to enhance and accelerate the spontaneous emission, and manipulate the decay and emission processes of quantum emitters. The extremely small mode volume of plasmonic nanocavities also benefits the realization of plasmon–exciton strong coupling. Here, the progress on the study of plasmon modified spontaneous emission and plasmon–exciton strong coupling are reviewed. The fundamentals of surface plasmons and quantum emitters, and the methods for assembling coupling systems of plasmonic nanostructures and quantum emitters are first introduced. Then the major aspects of plasmon modified spontaneous emission, including emission intensity, lifetime, spectral profile, direction, polarization, and energy transfer are reviewed. The coupling of quantum emitters and plasmonic waveguides is then discussed. Next, the developments of strong coupling between plasmonic structures and various quantum emitters are reviewed. Finally a few applications are highlighted followed by conclusions and outlook.

Abstract:With the fast development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, research on the unique optical properties of metal nanostructures and related applications has rapidly grown into an important branch discipline of nano-optics, known as plasmonics, with abundant content and extensive applications in many fields such as biology, chemistry, renewable energy, and information technology. This article introduces some basic concepts of surface plasmons, including localized surface plasmons and propagating surface plasmon polaritons. An overview of various important applications in bio/chemo sensing, nanolasers, ultrafast optical switches, surface plasmon-based logic, and so forth is presented.

Abstract:Surface phonon polariton (SPhP) is a special propagation mode in condensed matter systems. We present an investigation on the entanglement of SPhP modes. The entangled SPhP pairs are generated through launching entangled photons onto the grating coupling systems. The interaction Hamiltonian for the coupling process between entangled photons and entangled LRSPhPs is derived. State vector of the entangled LRSPhPs is obtained through the perturbation theory. The origin of LRSPhP entanglement is revealed. Wave mechanics approach is taken to describe the coupling process as an alteration. Abstract:Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are filled in a photonic crystal (PhC) hole array on green light emitting diodes (LEDs). The localized surface plasmon (LSP)–quantum well (QW) coupling effect is studied by measuring the cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra impinging at the specific spots on the Ag NPs. Twenty-six percent and fifty-two percent enhancements of the CL intensities are obtained at the center and edge of the Ag NP, respectively, compared to the result that the electron-beam (e-beam) excites the QW directly. To illustrate the coupling process of the three-body system of e-beam–LSP–QW, a perturbation theory combining a three-dimensional (3D) finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation is put forward. The effects of the polarization orientation of the dipole and the field symmetry of the LSP on the LSP–QW coupling are also discussed.

Resolving single plasmons generated by multiquantum-emitters on a silver nanowire

Abstract:Surface plasmons, the collective oscillations of electrons at metal surface, provide the ability to enhance the weak interaction between individual quantum emitters and photons for quantum information applications. The generation of single plasmons by coupling silver nanowire with single quantum emitters opens the prospects of using quantum optical techniques to control single surface plasmons and designing novel quantum plasmonic devices. However, the real applications will deal with multiple plasmons generated from multiple quantum emitters. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of resolving single plasmons generated by a pair of quantum dots (QDs) on a silver nanowire waveguide. The accurate positions of the two QDs with separation ranging from micrometers to 200 nm within the diffraction limit are determined by using super-resolution imaging method. The efficiency of plasmon generation due to the exciton-plasmon coupling is obtained for each QD. Our research takes a crucial step toward the experimental study of coupled systems of multiple quantum emitters and plasmonic waveguides and would shed new light on the study of light-matter interactions for potential quantum optics and quantum information applications.
Plasmonic Waveguides to Enhance Quantum Electrodynamic Phenomena at the Nanoscale

Abstract:The emerging field of plasmonics can lead to enhanced light matter interactions at extremely nanoscale regions. Plasmonic (metallic) devices promise to efficiently control both classical and quantum properties of light. Plasmonic waveguides are usually used to excite confined electromagnetic modes at the nanoscale that can strongly interact with matter. The analysis of these nanowaveguides exhibits similarities with their low frequency microwave counterparts. In this article, we review ways to study plasmonic nanostructures coupled to quantum optical emitters from a classical electromagnetic perspective. These quantum emitters are mainly used to generate single photon quantum light that can be employed as a quantum bit or qubit in the envisioned quantum information technologies. We demonstrate different ways to enhance a diverse range of quantum electrodynamic phenomena based on plasmonic configurations by using the classical dyadic tensor Green function formalism. More specifically, spontaneous emission and superradiance are analyzed by using the Green function based field quantization. The exciting new field of quantum plasmonics will lead to a plethora of novel optical devices for communications and computing applications operating in the quantum realm, such as efficient single-photon sources, quantum sensors, and compact on-chip nanophotonic circuits.

Abstract:The coupling of photons to collective charge oscillations at the surface of a metal to form surface-plasmon polaritons enables strong confinement of electromagnetic near fields in the vicinity of photonic nanostructures. Even though surface plasmons are formed from bosons and fermions, this kind of near-field wave exhibits bosonic properties in the limit of many electrons. Here we show that the classical near-field dynamics of surface plasmons are defined by nonclassical processes of scattering among their constituent multiparticle subsystems. We isolate multiparticle plasmonic subsystems to demonstrate that their quantum dynamics are governed by either bosonic or fermionic processes of coherence. We also discuss the quantum-coherence properties of plasmonic fields excited by the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. Our findings uncover multiparticle properties of electromagnetic near fields with important implications for quantum technology.

Abstract:The quantum emitter-metallic nanoparticle hybrid system possesses more functions and properties than the individual subunits. Here we perform theoretical studies about the interference effects on the absorption, scattering and the nonlinear effects enhancement in the hybrid system. On the one hand, based on the interference mechanism between multiple transitions, the effects of dark plasmon induced gain without inversion and methods of the absorption spectrum tailoring are proposed. On the other hand, we find that the hybrid system can realized the nanoscale control of photon statistics without the need of strong coupling. At last, using the plasmonic structure which gives an anisotropic Purcell factors, we theoretically demonstrate the effective modulation of the Kerr effects. These studies enrich the absorption, scattering and nonlinear properties of the hybrid system, which may have potential applications for the quantum state preparation, band-pass filter, refractive index sensing, photon statistics control and on-chip photonic nonlinear devices.
