Abstract:A reservoir computing (RC) system based on a semiconductor laser (SL) with double optical feedback and optical injection is proposed, and the prediction performance of such a system is numerically investigated via Santa Fe Time-Series Prediction task. The simulation results indicate that the RC system can yield a good prediction performance. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a scalable photonic reservoir computing system based on pulse propagation in parallel passive dispersive links. The approach features a simple structure and is composed of passive components, such as dispersive elements and ring resonators. The system utilizes a pulsed laser and employs a multi-channel architecture with dispersive elements for pulse broadening and ring resonators for delay stacking. It is verified for its capability to handle both digital tasks (2-bit Boolean logic operations, header recognition) and analog tasks (Mackey-Glass time-series prediction, Lorenz 63 time-series prediction). A major advantage of the approach lies in its scalability.It has been confirmed that more complex tasks can be processed by using a system with more channels, along with dispersive elements and ring resonators with larger dispersion amounts and delays, respectively. Abstract:A reservoir computing (RC) system based on two mutually delay coupled semiconductor lasers (MDC-SLs) subject to optical injection is proposed, and the chaotic time series prediction and signal classification performance for such a system is numerically investigated via the Santa-Fe time-series prediction task and the signal classification task, respectively. The simulation results indicate that, when adopting this system to process ultra-fast data with rate up to 1 Gbps, the best prediction error 5.1×10−5±5.2×10−6 and signal recognition error 5.5×10−4±8.8×10−5 can be achieved under optimized operation parameters.

Abstract:Via Santa Fe time series prediction and nonlinear channel equalization tasks, the performances of a reservoir computing (RC) system based on an optical feedback semiconductor laser (SL) under electrical information injection are numerically investigated. The simulated results show that the feedback delay time and strength seriously affect the performances of this RC system. By adopting a current-related optimized feedback delay time and strength, the RC can achieve a good performance for an SL biased within a wide region of 1.1-3.5 times its threshold. The prediction errors are smaller than 0.01 when implementing the Santa Fe tests, and the symbol error rates (SERs) are very low on the order of 10-5 for accomplishing nonlinear channel equalization tests under a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 32 dB. Moreover, under a given RC performance level, the information processing rate of the RC can be improved by increasing the SL current.

Abstract:Reservoir computing (RC) by supervised training, a bio-inspired paradigm, is gaining popularity for processing time-dependent data. Compared to conventional recurrent neural networks, RC is facilely implemented by available hardware and overcomes some obstacles in training period, such as slow convergence and local optimum. In this paper, we propose and characterize a novel reservoir computing system based on a semiconductor laser with double optoelectronic feedback loops. This system shows obvious improvement on prediction, speech recognition and nonlinear channel equalization compared to the traditional reservoir computing systems with single feedback loop. Then some influencing factors to optimize the performance of the new RC are numerically studied, and its great potential of addressing more complex and troubling problems in information processing is expected to be exploited.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the performances of an optical reservoir computing (RC) system based on two parallel time-delay reservoirs composed of two semiconductor lasers (SLs) subject to optical feedback. In such a system, the information being processed is split into two parts to send into two reservoirs through directly modulating the pump currents of two SLs, and the temporal output of the two SLs are sampled and taken as the virtual node states for training and testing. Via Santa Fe time series prediction task and multi-waveform recognition task, the performances of the proposed RC system are investigated and compared with those of the system based on one reservoir. The results show that the system based on two parallel reservoirs behaves better performance and stronger parameter robustness than that based on one reservoir. Moreover, through analyzing the dependence of the system performances on the number of virtual node states actually used for readout, the potential data processing rate (DPR) of the system is evaluated. For processing a prediction task under guaranteeing the normalized mean square error below 0.1 and a recognition task under guaranteeing the signal error rate below 0.005, the potential DPR of the proposed RC system can achieve 200 MSa/s, which is twice the DPR of the system with only one reservoir.

Abstract:Via the nonlinear channel equalization and the Santa-Fe time series prediction, the parallel processing capability of a reservoir computing (RC) system based on two mutually coupled semiconductor lasers is demonstrated numerically. The results show that, for parallel processing the prediction tasks of two Santa-Fe time series with rates of 0.25 GSa/s, the minimum prediction errors are 3.8 × 10−5 and 4.4 × 10−5, respectively. For parallel processing two nonlinear channel equalization tasks, the minimum symbol error rates (SERs) are 3.3 × 10−4 for both tasks. For parallel processing a nonlinear channel equalization and a Santa-Fe time series prediction, the minimum SER is 6.7 × 10−4 for nonlinear channel equalization, and the minimum prediction error is 4.6 × 10−5 for Santa-Fe time series prediction.

Abstract:Nonlinear photonic sources including semiconductor lasers have recently been utilized as ideal computation elements for information processing. They supply energy-efficient way and rich dynamics for classification and recognition tasks. In this work, we propose and numerically study the dynamics of complex photonic systems including high-$\beta$ laser element with delayed feedback and functional current modulation, and employ nonlinear laser dynamics of near-threshold region for the application in time-delayed reservoir computing. The results indicate a perfect (100$\%$) recognition accuracy for the pattern recognition task, and an accuracy of about 98$\%$ for the Mackey-Glass chaotic sequences prediction. Therefore, the system shows an improvement of performance with low-power consumption, in particular, the error rate is an order of magnitude smaller in comparison with previous works. Furthermore, by changing the DC pump, we are able to modify the amount of spontaneous emission photons of the system, this then allow us to explore how the laser noise impact the performance of the reservoir computing system. Through manipulating these variables, we show a deeper understanding on the proposed system, which is helpful for the practical applications of reservoir computing.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic time-delay reservoir computing (TDRC) system with random distributed optical feedback under optical injection. To evaluate the performance, we calculate the memory ability and perform two benchmark tasks, i.e., chaotic time series prediction and nonlinear channel equalization task. Our numerical results show that the proposed TDRC has a superior performance compared with the case with conventional single optical feedback. This is attributed to the fact that the random distributed optical feedback offers multiple external cavity modes, which enhance the nonlinearity of the reservoir laser. Additionally, the experimental result also shows that our proposed TDRC scheme outperforms the computer with single optical feedback in the chaotic time series prediction task. To the best of our knowledge, our work offers a novel path to improve the performance of TDRC by introducing random distributed optical feedback.

Abstract:Physics-based computing exploits nonlinear or disorder-induced complexity, for example, to realize energy-efficient and high-throughput computing tasks. A particularly difficult but useful task is the prediction of extreme events that can occur in a wide range of complex systems. We prepare an experiment based on a microcavity semiconductor laser that produces statistically rare extreme events resulting from the interplay of deterministic nonlinear dynamics and spontaneous emission noise. We then evaluate the performance of three reservoir computing training approaches in predicting the occurrence of extreme events. We show that Dual Training Reservoir Computing (which in turn can be implemented with fast semiconductor laser dynamics) can provide meaningful early warnings up to 15 times the typical linear correlation time of the dynamics.

Abstract:A simple reservoir computing (RC) system based on a solitary semiconductor laser under an electrical message injection is proposed, and the performances of the RC are numerically investigated. Considering the lack of memory capacity (MC) in such a system, some auxiliary methods are introduced to enhance the MC and optimize the performances for processing complex tasks. In the pre-existing method, the input information is the current input data combined with some past input data in a weighted sum in the input layer (named as M-input). Another auxiliary method (named as M-output) is proposed to introduce the output layer for optimizing the performances of the RC system. The simulated results demonstrate that the MC of the system can be improved after adopting the auxiliary methods, and the effectiveness under adopting the M-input integrated with the M-output (named as M-both) is the most significant. Furthermore, we analyze the system performances for processing the Santa Fe time series prediction task and the nonlinear channel equalization (NCE) task after adopting the above three auxiliary methods. Results show that the M-input is the most suitable for the prediction task while the M-both is the most appropriate for the NCE task.

Abstract:As an efficient information processing method, reservoir computing (RC) is essential to artificial neural networks (ANNs). Via the Santa Fe time series prediction task, we numerically investigated the effect of the mismatch of some critical parameters on the prediction performance of the RC based on two mutually delay-coupled semiconductor lasers (SLs) with optical injection. The results show that better prediction performance can be realized by setting appropriate parameter mismatch scenarios. Especially for the situation with large prediction errors encountered in the RC with identical laser parameters, a suitable parameter mismatch setting can achieve computing performance improvement of an order of magnitude. Our research is instructive for the hardware implementation of laser-based RC, where the parameter mismatch is unavoidable.

Abstract:Studying the chaotic dynamics of semiconductor lasers is of great importance for their applications in random bit generation and secure communication. While considerable effort has been expended towards investigating these chaotic behaviors through numerical simulations and experiments, the accurate prediction of chaotic dynamics from limited observational data remains a challenge. Recent advancements in machine learning, particularly in reservoir computing, have shown promise in capturing and predicting the complex dynamics of semiconductor lasers. However, existing works on laser chaos predictions often suffer from the need for manual parameter optimization. Moreover, the generalizability of the approach remains to be investigated, i.e., concerning the influences of practical laser inherent noise and measurement noise. To address these challenges, we employ an automated optimization approach, i.e., a genetic algorithm, to select optimal reservoir parameters. This allows efficient training of the reservoir network, enabling the prediction of continuous intensity time series and reconstruction of laser dynamics. Furthermore, the impact of inherent laser noise and measurement noise on the prediction of chaotic dynamics is systematically examined through numerical analysis. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and generalizability of the proposed approach in achieving accurate predictions of chaotic dynamics in semiconductor lasers.

Abstract:Prediction of continuous intensity time series and the underlying dynamical behaviors are investigated for chaotic optically injected semiconductor lasers. An intensity time series of about 20ns is first simulated by a rate-equation model, and is then utilized for training of a reservoir network. Upon careful optimization of the reservoir parameters, prediction of the continuous intensity time series is successfully demonstrated for over 0.8ns. Moreover, the dynamical behaviors of the chaotic laser are also successfully reproduced, including the microwave power spectrum, probability density function, autocorrelation function, and chaotic attractors.

Abstract:A neuromorphic reservoir computing (RC) system using a semiconductor nanolaser (SNL) with double phase conjugate feedbacks (PCF) is proposed for the first time and demonstrated numerically. The prediction performance of such RC system is investigated via Santa Fe chaotic time series prediction task. The Purcell cavity-enhanced spontaneous emission factor F and the spontaneous emission coupling factor beta are included in the rate equations, and the influences of F and beta on the prediction performance of such RC system are analyzed extensively. For the purpose of comparison, the prediction performance of SNL-based RC system with single PCF is also considered. The simulation results indicate that, compared with the SNL-based RC system with single PCF, enhanced prediction performance can be obtained for the SNL-based RC system with double PCF. Moreover, the influences of bias current, the modulation depth of input signal, feedback strength, as well as feedback delay, are also taken into account. The proposed SNL-based RC system subject to double PCF in this paper has the potential to develop the RC-based neuromorphic photonic integrated circuit.

Abstract:Reservoir computing (RC), especially photonic RC based on a single semiconductor laser with a feedback loop, as a method of machine learning, shows excellent performance in time series prediction and classification tasks. The faster the processing speed, the shorter the feedback loop should be employed. However, the performance of the system is not ideal enough due to the limited reservoir nodes caused by the short feedback loop. To overcome this drawback, it is necessary and challenging to develop integrated photonic RC. In this paper, we propose an integrated neuromorphic photonic time-delayed RC scheme based on an array of four distributed feedback lasers (F-DFBs) with optical feedback and injection. Here, we investigate the feasibility of using larger laser arrays and shorter external feedback cavities to provide the RC system with more virtual nodes at the same processing speed, enabling it to handle more complex tasks. Additionally, we compare the performance of the systems with a single DFB (the S-DFB RC) and the F-DFBs RC through simulations and experiments involving iris recognition tasks. Furthermore, the minimum symbol error rate values can reach 0.052 in experiments (and 0 in simulations).

Abstract:In this work, we propose a scheme of reservoir computing (RC) for processing a Santa-Fe time series prediction task and a signal classification task in parallel, and the performances of the RC have been numerically investigated. For this scheme. a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) simultaneously subject to double optical feedback and optical injection is utilized as a nonlinear node, and the parallel information processing of the RC system is implemented based on the dynamical responses of X polarization component (X-PC) and Y polarization component (Y-PC) in the VCSEL. Considering that two different feedback frames (polarization-preserved optical feedback (PP-OF) or polarization-rotated optical feedback (PR-OF)) may be adopted in two feedback loops, four feedback combination cases arc numerically analyzed. The simulated results show that the parallel processing ability of the proposed RC system depends on the feedback frames adopted in two loops. After comprehensively evaluating the parallel processing performances of the two tasks under different feedback combinations, the best parallel processing performance can be achieved by adopting PP-OFs in both two feedback loops. Under some optimized operation parameters, this proposed RC system can realize the lowest prediction error of 0.0289 and the lowest signal classification error of 2.78 x 10(-5). Abstract:In this work, we propose and numerically investigate a scheme for reservoir computing (RC) based on two parallel reservoirs under identical electrical message injection, in which two semiconductor lasers (SLs) under optical feedback are utilized as two parallel reservoirs. For simplifying the system, only one mask signal is employed in this scheme. After multiplying with input data, the masked information is injected into two parallel reservoir lasers (SL1 and SL2). The virtual node states can be obtained from the temporal outputs of two SLs. RC can be accomplished by three ways, namely RC1/RC2 (the virtual node states originating from SL1/SL2 are used for training and testing) and RCM (the merged virtual node states originating from two SLs are used for training and testing). Via chaotic time series prediction task and memory capacity (MC) test, the performance of the RC system is simulated and assessed. The results show that, for a given data processing rate, better prediction performance and higher MC can be realized by RCM through setting suitable mismatched parameters between the two SLs. Under satisfying the requirement for achieving a good performance, the highest data processing rate can be doubled for RCM with respect to that for RC1/RC2.
