Abstract:Dissipative Kerr solitons in resonant frequency combs offer a promising route for ultrafast mode-locking, precision spectroscopy and time-frequency standards. The dynamics for the dissipative soliton generation, however, are intrinsically intertwined with thermal nonlinearities, limiting the soliton generation parameter map and statistical success probabilities of the solitary state. Here, via use of an auxiliary laser heating approach to suppress thermal dragging dynamics in dissipative soliton comb formation, we demonstrate stable Kerr soliton singlet formation and soliton bursts. First, we access a new soliton existence range with an inverse-sloped Kerr soliton evolution-diminishing soliton energy with increasing pump detuning. Second, we achieve deterministic transitions from Turing-like comb patterns directly into the dissipative Kerr soliton singlet pulse bypassing the chaotic states. This is achieved by avoiding subcomb overlaps at lower pump power, with near-identical singlet soliton comb generation over twenty instances. Third, with the red-detuned pump entrance route enabled, we uncover unique spontaneous soliton bursts in the direct formation of low-noise optical frequency combs from continuum background noise. The burst dynamics are due to the rapid entry and mutual attraction of the pump laser into the cavity mode, aided by the auxiliary laser and matching well with our numerical simulations. Enabled by the auxiliary-assisted frequency comb dynamics, we demonstrate an application of automatic soliton comb recovery and long-term stabilization against strong external perturbations. Our findings hold potential to expand the parameter space for ultrafast nonlinear dynamics and precision optical frequency comb stabilization.

Abstract:The formation of dissipative cavity solitons in microresonators provides an efficient process for ultrashort pulse synthesis and mode-locking of Kerr frequency combs. However, as dissipative cavity solitons arise spontaneously from a continuous-wave pump, deterministically controlling the number of intracavity solitons remains challenging to date. In this paper, we propose an efficient yet easy way to access single cavity soliton formation in microresonators via inverse-Kelly sideband generation in Kerr comb spectrum. Our method only requires fixed-speed unidirectional pump frequency sweeping to achieve single soliton state, avoiding complex pump scanning trajectory and high frequency pump modulation. Moreover, we report on the determinacy of single-soliton generation using the proposed method; statistic analysis shows that excellent determinacy as high as 98.7% is achieved.

Abstract:The emergence of soliton microcombs has catalyzed significant advancements in a wide range of applications, including optical communication, precision metrology, and astronomical calibration. Despite the existing benefits, soliton microcombs generated in passive microcavities often face significant limitations in promoting comb power and nonlinear efficiency. On the other hand, generating soliton combs within active microresonators has remained challenging due to the confined cavity volume for doping and substantial opto-thermal effects. In this study, we successfully achieve dissipative Kerr solitons in an active microcavity by sintering erbium ions (Er3+) onto its surface. The introduction of Er3+ significantly boosts the power of the microcomb within the cavity, bypassing the traditional requirement for an external erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and paving the way toward high quality soliton microcomb integration. By operating the system below the lasing threshold, the actively optical-assisted microcomb maintains the low-noise advantages of coherently driven solitons. Our research demonstrates that the optical excitation of Er3+ facilitates the tunability of cavity losses, thereby providing a method to dynamically control the soliton properties. This enables soliton operation at a lower threshold, with a larger soliton access range, wider comb span, and enhanced comb power. The increased intracavity power and enhanced Kerr nonlinear process also enable the generation of EDFA-free solitons in a low-Q microcavity, paving the way for simplifying microcomb devices. These findings open new avenues for the formation of active cavity solitons (ACSs), where the combination of coherent and incoherent pumping within a microcavity yields superior performance and increased practicality.

Abstract:Microresonator-based Kerr frequency combs have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years, in which mode locking of the generated combs is associated with bright or dark cavity soliton formation.In this paper, we show that, different from soliton propagation along a waveguide, cavity solitons can be robustly formed under a unique dispersion profile with four zero-dispersion wavelengths.More importantly, such a dispersion profile exhibits much smaller overall dispersion, thus making it possible to greatly reduce the pump power by five to six times.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr solitons are self-organized optical waves arising from the interplay between Kerr effect and dispersion. They can form spontaneously in nonlinear microresonators pumped with an external continuous-wave laser, which provides the parametric gain for the proliferation of an ultrastable frequency comb. These miniaturized and battery driven microcombs have become a disruptive technology for precision metrology, broadband telecommunication and ultrafast optical ranging. In this work, we report on the first experimental observation of dissipative Kerr solitons generated in a ring cavity with a fast semiconductor gain medium. The moderate quality factor of the ring cavity is compensated by the giant resonant Kerr nonlinearity of a quantum cascade laser, which is more than a million times larger than in Si3N4. By engineering the dispersion of the cavity, we observe the formation of bright dissipative Kerr solitons in the mid-infrared range. Soliton formation appears after an abrupt symmetry breaking between the two lasing directions of the ring cavity. The pump field of the soliton is generated by direct electrical driving and closely resembles the soliton Cherenkov radiation observed in passive microcombs. Two independent techniques shed light on the waveform and coherence of the solitons and confirm a pulse width of approximately 3 ps. Our results extend the spectral range of soliton microcombs to mid-infrared wavelengths and will lead to integrated, battery driven and turnkey spectrometers in the molecular fingerprint region.

Abstract:Optical solitons are wavepackets that can sustain the shape via a nonlinear refractive index potential well. They exist in a wide range of optical systems spanning optical fibers, fiber lasers and parametric oscillators. Recently, a new type optical solitons have been observed in coherently pumped high-Q microcavities. The observation of microcavity optical solitons provides a well-controlled experimental platform to study soliton physics. Microcavity optical solitons also endow an array of highly stable spectral lines in the frequency domain, which advance the miniaturization of frequency comb systems. These soliton microcombs have been self-reference stabilized and could enable many chip-based applications including optical frequency synthesizers, optical atomic clocks, data transmission, spectrometer and LiDAR in the near future. Here, the fundamental of microcavity optical solitons was introduced, with a special focus on soliton interaction dynamics. The microcavity dual-comb measurement based applications in fast imaging and mid-infrared gas spectroscopy were also discussed.

Abstract:Solitons are self-reinforcing localized wave packets arising from a balance of linear and nonlinear effects. This definition encompasses the interplay of nonlinear gain and loss, leading to the concept of dissipative solitons that has been instrumental in understanding the wide variety of mode locking phenomena in ultrafast optics. To date, most studies have involved the group velocity dispersion as a key ingredient for soliton generation. Here, we report on a novel kind of soliton, both theoretically and experimentally, which builds up in spectrally confined cavities when dispersion is practically absent. Precisely, the interplay between the Kerr nonlinearity and spectral filtering results in an infinite hierarchy of eigenfunctions which, combined with optical gain, allow for the generation of stable dispersion-less dissipative solitons in a previously uncharted regime. When the filter order tends to be infinite, we find an unexpected link between dissipative and conservative solitons, in the form of Nyquist-pulse-like solitons endowed with an ultra-flat spectrum. In contrast to the dispersion-enabled solitons, these dispersion-less Nyquist solitons build on a fully confined spectrum and their energy scaling is not constrained by the pulse duration. This study broadens the fundamental scope of dissipative soliton physics and opens new avenues for engineering optical solitons endowed with superior temporal and spectral features.

Abstract:Driven Kerr nonlinear optical resonators can sustain localized structures known as dissipative Kerr cavity solitons, which have recently attracted significant attention as the temporal counterparts of microresonator optical frequency combs. Whilst conventional wisdom asserts that bright cavity solitons can only exist in the region of anomalous dispersion, recent theoretical studies have predicted that higher-order dispersion can fundamentally alter the situation, enabling bright localized structures even under conditions of normal dispersion driving. Here we demonstrate a flexible optical fibre ring resonator platform that offers unprecedented control over dispersion conditions, and we report on the first experimental observations of bright localized structures that are fundamentally enabled by higher-order dispersion. In broad agreement with past theoretical predictions, we find that several distinct bright structures can co-exist for the same parameters, and we observe experimental evidence of their collapsed snaking bifurcation structure. In addition to enabling direct experimental verifications of a number of theoretical predictions, we show that the ability to judiciously control the dispersion conditions offers a novel route for ultrashort pulse generation: the bright structures observed in our work correspond to pulses of light as short as 220~fs -- the record for a passive all-fibre ring resonator. We envisage that our work will stimulate further fundamental studies on the impact of higher-order dispersion on Kerr cavity dynamics, as well as guide the development of novel ultrashort pulse sources and dispersion-engineered microresonator frequency combs.

Abstract:A coherently driven Kerr optical cavity is able to sustain dissipative temporal solitons, enabling all-optical data storage buffers and broadband frequency combs. Kerr solitons are balanced through an energy exchange with the pump field. Improving the pump-to-soliton energy conversion is of great importance for practical applications, but remains an outstanding challenge owing to a limited pump–soliton temporal overlap. Here we report the discovery of temporal solitons in mutually coupled cavities instead of a traditional single cavity. A pump recycling strategy is proposed, to greatly improve the power utilization efficiency. Using macroscale optical fibre-ring cavities, which share the same physical model as miniature microresonators, we demonstrate nearly 100% pump recycling and the ability to break the efficiency limit of a single cavity. This study could greatly extend the applications of temporal cavity solitons and provides an attractive platform for exploring the complex nonlinear dynamics in coupled cavity systems.

Abstract:A plethora of applications have recently motivated extensive efforts on the generation of low noise Kerr solitons and coherent frequency combs in various platforms ranging from fiber to whispering gallery and integrated microscale resonators. However, the Kerr (cubic) nonlinearity is inherently weak, and in contrast, strong quadratic nonlinearity in optical resonators is expected to provide an alternative means for soliton formation with promising potential. Here, we demonstrate the formation of a dissipative quadratic soliton via non-stationary optical parametric amplification in the presence of significant temporal walk-off between pump and signal leading to half-harmonic generation accompanied by a substantial pulse compression (exceeding a factor of 40) at low pump pulse energies ($\sim$ 4 picojoules). The bright quadratic soliton forms in a low-finesse cavity in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, which is in stark contrast with bright Kerr solitons. We present a route to significantly improve the performance of the demonstrated quadratic soliton when extended to an integrated nonlinear platform to realize highly-efficient extreme pulse compression leading to the formation of few-cycle soliton pulses starting from ultra-low energy picosecond scale pump pulses that are widely tunable from ultra-violet to mid-infrared spectral regimes.

Abstract:The discovery that externally driven nonlinear optical resonators can sustain ultrashort pulses (solitons) corresponding to coherent optical frequency combs has enabled landmark advances in applications from telecommunications to sensing. Most previous research has focused on resonators with purely cubic (Kerr-type) nonlinearity that are externally driven with a monochromatic continuous-wave laser—in such systems, the solitons manifest themselves as unique attractors whose carrier frequency coincides with that of the external driving field. Recent experiments have, however, shown that a qualitatively different type of temporal soliton can arise via parametric downconversion in resonators with simultaneous quadratic and cubic nonlinearity. In contrast to conventional solitons in pure-Kerr resonators, these parametrically driven solitons come in two different flavours with opposite phases, and they are spectrally centred at half of the frequency of the driving field. Here we theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate that parametrically driven solitons can also arise in resonators with pure-Kerr nonlinearity under conditions of bichromatic driving. In this case, the solitons arise through four-wave-mixing-mediated phase-sensitive amplification, come with two distinct phases and have a carrier frequency in between the two external driving fields. Our experiments are performed in an integrated silicon nitride microcavity, and we observe frequency comb spectra in remarkable agreement with theoretical predictions. In addition to representing the discovery of a new type of temporal dissipative soliton, our results constitute an unequivocal realization of parametrically driven soliton frequency combs in a microcavity platform that is compatible with foundry-ready mass fabrication.

Abstract:We report on the theoretical analysis as well as the numerical simulations about the nonlinear dynamics of cavity solitons in a passive Kerr resonator operating in the multistable regime under the condition of a sufficiently strong pump. In this regime, the adjacent tilted cavity resonances might overlap, thus leading to the co-existence of combinatory states of temporal cavity solitons and the extended modulation instability patterns. Very interestingly, the cavity in the regime of multistablity may sustain distinct families of cavity solitons, vividly termed as super cavity solitons with much higher intensity and broader spectra if compared with those in the conventional bi-stable regime. The description of such complex cavity dynamics in the multstable regime requires either the infinite-dimensional Ikeda map, or the derived mean-field coupled Lugiato-Lefever equations by involving the contributing cavity resonances. With the latter model, for the first time, we revealed the existence of different orders of super cavity solitons, whose stationary solutions were obtained by using the Newton-Raphson algorithm. Along this line, with the continuation calculation, we have plotted the Hopf / saddle-node bifurcation curves, thus identifying the existing map of the stable and breathing (super) cavity solitons. With this defined parameter space, we have proposed an efficient method to excite and switch the super cavity solitons by adding an appropriate intensity (or phase) perturbation on the pump. Such deterministic cavity soliton manipulation technique is demonstrated to underpin the multi-level coding, which may enable the large capacity all-optical buffering based on the passive fiber ring cavities.

Abstract:By generating a Brillouin laser in an optical microresonator, we realize a soliton Kerr microcomb through exciting the Kerr frequency comb using the generated Brillouin laser in the same cavity. The intracavity Brillouin laser pumping scheme enables us to access the soliton states with a blue-detuned input pump. Due to the ultra-narrow linewidth and the low-noise properties of the generated Brillouin laser, the observed soliton microcomb exhibits narrow-linewidth comb lines and stable repetition rate even by using a diode laser with relatively broad linewidth. Also, we demonstrate a low-noise microwave signal with phase noise levels of -24 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz, -111 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz, and -147 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offsets for a 11.14 GHz carrier with only a free-running input pump. The easy operation of the Brillouin-Kerr soliton microcomb with excellent performance makes our scheme promising for practical applications.
