Abstract:Laser frequency drift (LFD) restricts the low-frequency vibration sensing ability of phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer ( $\Phi $ -OTDR). In this study, we propose a self-diagnosis structure combining Mach–Zehnder interference and $\Phi $ -OTDR is first designed to realize LFD measurement and vibration sensing simultaneously. A multiscale variational mode decomposition (VMD) with the judgment at different amplitude scales, time scales, and modal scales is proposed to suppress the influence of LFD at low-frequency vibration demodulation. Experimental results show a long-time continuous LFD measurement and vibration sensing along the sensing fiber of 10040 m. After the parameter optimization of iteration and mode decomposition with multiscale VMD, infrasonic and sub-Hertz vibration signals can be detected with improved SNR. The ultralow-frequency vibration signal as low as 0.04 Hz is also demodulated under a long-time continuous detection of more than 40 min. The fitting coefficient between the recovered vibration frequency and the actual vibration frequency is 0.99966. This self-diagnostic structure, based on multiscale VMD, effectively suppresses the influence of LFD on $\Phi $ -OTDR and reliably recovers ultralow-frequency vibrations during long-term detection.

Abstract:Phase modulation is one of the key techniques for the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) system. This paper proposes a novel phase modulation method by utilizing the phase shifting technique based on unbalanced Michelson interferometer (MI-PST) to reduce the computation complexity of the Φ-OTDR system. One arm of the MI is winded on a piezoelectric ceramic transducer (PZT) to introduce the modulation phase. Three shifting phases in the sequence of π/2, -π/2 and 0 are generated through the PZT. The signal phase can be directly calculated according to the three light intensities modulated by the shifting phases without calling for any complicate signal processing. In the experiment of 2 km sensing range, the system can accurately detect the signal information at any vibration position along the fiber, and the obtained signal-to-noise ratio can reach 44.21 dB with the background noise of 7.94×10-3 rad/√Hz. The proposed method is simple in both hardware implementation and signal calculation which reduces the computational complexity of the Φ-OTDR system.

Abstract:In phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR), the frequency drift of the laser source induces the fluctuation of signal, which limits the measurement capacity of Phi-OTDR for low frequency severely. In this paper, we propose a method to compensate for the influence of the frequency drift by using an auxiliary Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). In this method, the signal of the auxiliary MZI is received to monitor the frequency drift continuously, and then, to correct the signal obtained from the sensing path. In the experiment, a vibration with a 0.1-Hz frequency on a 6-km sensing fiber is detected with a 10-m spatial resolution and the sensitivity is estimated to be 5.9 n epsilon. This method will expand the scope of application of Phi-OTDR in the fields that require high sensitivity and low frequency response.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) based on heterodyne detection is widely used for its simple structure and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, the large amount of raw data of Φ-OTDR places a heavy burden on the storage device and also limits the transferability of the data. In this Letter, we propose an ultra-low sampling resolution technique to solve the data storage problem in heterodyne Φ-OTDR. Experimental results show that the optical phase variations induced by external vibrations can be successfully demodulated from the 1-bit-resolution raw data, and a vibration SNR of 58.03 dB is achieved. In addition, this work also reveals that a data acquisition device with extremely low sampling resolution is sufficient for heterodyne Φ-OTDR, signifying that the cost of the system can be further decreased.

Abstract:The phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (phi-OTDR) can effectively detect the vibration information of fiber; however, the detectable vibration frequency range is generally between several hundred hertz and several kilohertz, limited by the length of the sensing fiber. To improve the vibration detection range, a phi-OTDR system that uses heterodyne coherent detection is built in this study. The phase information of the scattered optical signal of the sensing fiber is obtained using the I/Q demodulation method. Differential phase demodulation in the space and time domains is consecutively performed to achieve a distributed detection of high frequency vibration signals in the fiber. Furthermore, the feasibility of the proposed high-frequency vibration detection scheme is theoretically analyzed, and the vibration signal with a frequency of 500 kHz is effectively demodulated in the experiment, obtaining a sensing distance of 23 km.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) is often required in many large-scale monitoring applications. However, the frequency response of the system is restricted by the round-trip time transmitted along the sensing fiber. In this article, we propose a new system which can realize ultrasound sensing with a very long sensing distance. The new system uses a weak reflector array as the sensing part to realize a quasi-distributed measurement. An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) method is used to multiplex multiple probe pulses into one interrogating period. This method has a high spectrum utilization efficiency of the transmission bandwidth. Vernier effect is also used to detect the frequency higher than the repetition rate of the probe pulses. With the combination of these two proposed methods, a quasi-distributed measurement of ultrasound signal with a response frequency up to 25 kHz can be realized with a very long sensing distance up to 51 km.

Abstract:The spatial-resolved capacity of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry ( $\varphi $ -OTDR) is limited by the optical pulse width, which increases the localization errors when measuring vibrations with range shorter than that determined by the pulse width. To overcome this problem, a high spatial-resolved $\varphi $ -OTDR with a differential pulse width sequence is proposed. The centimeter spatial resolution sensing can be realized by using meter equivalent pulses. This scheme utilizes the time-domain waveform subtraction obtained from the same pulse repetition rate and different pulse widths to form the differential vibration information at each fiber location. First, we provide a comprehensive treatment to prove that the proposed scheme can improve the spatial-resolved capacity of the $\varphi $ -OTDR system. The spatial resolution of 1.08m for 60/50ns pulse sequence is realized with a 30cm vibration source. Second, in a further proof-of-concept experiment, the spatial resolution is achieved up to 0.55m with a 55/50ns pulse sequence. It is demonstrated that the ability of spatial-resolved is enhanced greatly without any hardware modifications, compared to that required in the conventional method. This method holds great significance in accurately locating vibration signals within the narrow range of the distributed vibration sensor.

Abstract:Distributed fiber-optic vibration sensors based on phase-sensitive optical timedomain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) have found many applications in various fields. In this paper, we analyze the phase noise of Φ-OTDR, which is the main limiting factor of the measurement range. We found that the laser phase noise and phase extraction error caused by the intensity noise in photodetection contribute to the total phase noise. By introducing a series of auxiliary weak reflection points along the fiber, we develop a phase-noise-compensated Φ-OTDR and realize a long-range distributed vibration sensing based on the phase extraction. Furthermore, a statistical analysis was proposed to maintain the vibration measurement sensitivity along the whole fiber. In the experiment, vibrations at 30 km were measured with a linear response, which confirmed the validity of our proposed system.

Abstract:Phase optical time domain reflectometer (Phi-OTDR) is capable of quantitatively gauging the perturbations on the fiber based on the linear relationship between the phase change and the strain of the fiber. However, various noises in the coherent Phi-OTDR system may deteriorate the accuracy of quantitative measurement. In this letter, the characteristic of the phase evolution along fiber is analyzed and the phase change is recovered through differential calculations in the direction of both fiber length and time. According to the linear characteristic of phase change, the accurate measurement result is finally obtained by fitting the trace of phase change with the method of total least square. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis and five sets of measurements for the sinusoidal vibration are exceedingly consistent with each other. The variation coefficients of amplitude and frequency are 0.1931% and 0.0127%, respectively. And the minimum value of R-square representing the similarity between the measured waveform and the driving signal is 0.9999.

Abstract:The multi-parameter sensing is in great demand for comprehensive recognition in various application scenarios. We demonstrate a distributed optical fiber sensor (DOFS) for simultaneous vibration and temperature/strain sensing based on the integration of Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) and phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). A double heterodyne detection configuration is set up to receive the Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering simultaneously, which can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and reduce the polarization fading noise for the Brillouin signal at the same time. Most components in the setup are multiplexed for the Brillouin and Rayleigh signals. The overall cost is much lower than the summation of the BOTDR and the Φ-OTDR setup. In experiments, the setup is capable of measuring temperature change near the end of the 49.9 km long fiber with 0.381 MHz measurement uncertainty and restore different vibration patterns correctly by demodulating the phase variation of Rayleigh scattering signal, owning a 20 m spatial resolution. The sampling rate of the vibration measurement is 1.8 kHz, and the achieved dynamic strain resolution is 1.235 nɛ/√Hz with 100 Hz vibration.

Abstract:A novel fiber-optic phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) distributed sensing system is proposed and demonstrated for long-distance intrusion monitoring. By using the bi-directional Raman optical amplification technology, even intrusion signal detection along the whole sensing distance of ~62km has been demonstrated, resulting in the longest and the most sensitive Φ -OTDR distributed sensing system reported so far, to the best of our knowledge. In addition, high-power single-mode fiber laser with ultra-narrow line-width and special optical fiber cable encapsulated by fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) are used to further enhance the intrusion detection sensitivity, respectively.

Abstract:The frequency-drift of laser source is a crucial factor for influencing the performance of the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR). It induces signal fluctuation and severely limits the measurement capacity for low frequency. In this paper, a twice differential method is proposed to compensate for the influence of the laser-frequency-drift in Φ-OTDR. It uses the differential signal between two points on the sensing fiber as a reference signal and then subtracts the reference signal from the main signal to obtain the final result. In the experiment, the signal fluctuation induced by laser-frequency-drift is decreased by more than 95%. A vibration with a 0.1 Hz frequency on a 6 km sensing fiber is detected with 10 m spatial resolution and sensitivity is estimated to be 5.9 nε. With this method we also successfully measured the process of a stepper motor stretching a fiber section. This method will expand the scope of application of Φ-OTDR in the fields, which require high sensitivity and low frequency response.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Ф-OTDR) has been widely used to interrogate multi-point vibration events in the health monitoring and damage detection of civil infrastructures, mechanical processes and aerospace transportation. Due to the different lengths of the events, the spatial resolution (SR) requirements would also be different. This paper presents and demonstrates two kinds of Φ-OTDR sensing systems with multi-spatial resolution (MSR) analysis characteristics. Frequency division multiplexing (FDM) and multi-scale matching filtering schemes were introduced to provide MSR ability for the phase-discrimination and amplitude-discrimination Φ-OTDR systems respectively. The proposed methods could restore vibration events of different scales with optimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in merely a single measurement while maintaining the detectable frequency range, which offered promising solutions for the performance optimization of Φ-OTDR sensing systems.

Abstract:A phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) can be used for pipeline security. However, the sensing distance (less than 20 km) of traditional Φ-OTDR is too short for the needs of typical oil and gas pipeline monitoring applications (30-50 km). A simple structure Φ-OTDR system utilizing long pulse, balanced amplified detector and heterodyne detection is proposed in this paper and the sensing range is thereby increased to 60 km. Through analyzing the sensing principle of Φ-OTDR, a novel locating strategy is proposed to maintain the locating accuracy at a few meters when a long pulse (5 µs) is used. The increased pulse width deteriorates the time series of each sensing point seriously. In order to eliminate the deterioration, a data processing technique combining wavelet and empirical mode decomposition is applied in this system. The experiment results show that the sensing distance can be increased to 60 km and the locating accuracy is maintained at 6.8 m.

Abstract:Wider bandwidth always means better overall performance for an information system. Naturally, this criterion can also be applied to phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR), which is a typical distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) system. Thus, an indispensable way to enhance the pertbrmance of Phi-OTDR is to increase the available system bandwidth, which is usually limited by the electrical components. As a kind of frequency resources, the negative frequency band (NFB) has been used in communication systems based on coherent receivers and high-order modulation, but is still rarely used in DOFS. In this paper, we make a comprehensive study on how to utilize NFB in Phi-OTDR and thus double the available system bandwidth. Moreover, the related improvement of sensing performance is experimentally demonstrated. The positive and negative frequency multiplexing is utilized together with frequency division multiplexing to break the inherent trade-off between sensing distance and scan-rate. As a result, 21.6 kHz scan-rate is experimentally achieved on a 103 km fiber, with 97 p epsilon/root Hz strain resolution and 9.3 m spatial resolution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the best sensing performance in long distance Phi-OTDR > 100 km. The proposed scheme can also be applied to other DOFS systems with heterodyne-detection, opening up new possibilities for performance enhancement in DOFS systems. Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (phi-OTDR) uses narrow line-width laser with high coherence. In the sensing fiber, scattered lights from optical pulse interfere, and the interference light is highly sensitive to external disturbance. But the traditional amplitude-detection phi-OTDR is not quantitative detection, so that phase demodulation is necessary. Phase demodulation system based on 3 X 3 Michelson interferometer is costeffective, but is of lower spatial resolution than the traditional amplitude-detection phi-OTDR. We propose a fourchannel detection method to preserve the same spatial resolution as amplitude-detection phi-OTDR by adding only one detection channel. But the interference of scattered lights may have critical influence to phase demodulation. A four-channel detection system of phase demodulation phi-OTDR is analyzed based on 3 X 3 Michelson interferometer, from the aspect of Rayleigh backscattering light. The experiment shows that the disturbance around the fiber is detected quantitatively, with a linearity of O. 9956, phase sensing range of 31.85 rad, and the spatial resolution is same as that of amplitude-demodulation phi-OTDR.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) has been proposed for distributed vibration sensing purpose over recent years. Emerging applications, including seismic and hydroacoustic wave detection, demand accurate low-frequency vibration reconstruction capability. We propose to use the direct-detection Φ-OTDR configuration to achieve quantitative demodulation of external low-frequency vibrations by phase-shifted dual-pulse probes. Simultaneous pulsing and phase shifting modulation is realized with a single acousto-optic modulator to generate such probes, relaxing the need for an additional optical phase modulator. In the experiments, vibrations with frequency as low as 0.5 Hz are successfully reconstructed with 10 m spatial resolution and 35 dB signal-to-noise ratio. Excellent linearity and repeatability are demonstrated between the optical phase demodulation results and the applied vibration amplitudes. The proposed method is capable of quantitative demodulation of low-frequency vibrations with a cost-effective system configuration and high computation efficiency, showing potential for commercial applications of distributed seismic or hydroacoustic wave acquisition.

Abstract:This Letter proposes a novel phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) with continuous chirped-wave (CCW), which can make full use of both time and frequency domain resources. The principle and benefits of CCW Φ-OTDR are elaborated. With the merit of CCW Φ-OTDR, 1.042 MHz sensing bandwidth and 5pε/Hz strain sensitivity are achieved along a 1013 m fiber with 4.4 m spatial resolution. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first time that a Φ-OTDR achieves megahertz sensing bandwidth with metric spatial resolution, and without limiting the frequency feature of the disturbance. The good performance in long-range sensing is also verified over a 49.7 km fiber. More than that, the digital domain flexibility of the proposed scheme can be used to optimize the measured acoustic signal according to its feature and the practical needs.
A Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing System for Synchronous Vibration and Loss Measurement

Abstract:We propose a fully distributed fusion system combining phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and OTDR for synchronous vibration and loss measurement by setting an ingenious frequency sweep rate ( FSR ) of the optical source. The relationships between FSR , probe pulse width and repeat period are given to balance the amplitude fluctuation of OTDR traces, the dead zone probability and the measurable frequency range of vibration events. In the experiment, we achieve synchronous vibration and loss measurement with FSR of 40 MHz/s, the proble pulse width of 100 ns and repeat rate of 0.4 ms. The fluctuation of OTDR trace is less than 0.45 dB when the signal-to-noise ratio ( SNR ) is over 12 dB for a captured vibration event located at 9.1 km. The proposed method can be used for not only detection but also early warning of damage events in optical communication networks.
