Abstract:Existing studies in the literature to date on the English translation of Lun Yu are mostly on the linguistic level.Few scholars have probed into the relationship between the English translation of Lun Yu and the transmission and succession of the Chinese culture.Taking Waley's version of The Analects as a sample and based on the theory of the manipulation of ideology,this study makes further explorations in the misinterpretation and mistranslation in the English translation of Chinese classics.The research findings are as follows:1.The misinterpretation and mistranslation in the English translation of Chinese classics are closely connected to ideology;2.When interpreting and translating meanings in a foreign culture,translators should treat them with caution;3.Scholars working on Confucianism and translation studies should work together in the transmission and succession of the excellent traditional Chinese culture so as to make Confucianism known to the world.

Abstract:The Confucian Analects or Lunyu has had many translations in the English-speaking world, yet Confucius still largely remains a vague, distant, unattractive, and at times confusing figure for the Western reader. It is both necessary and possible to change this situation. This article reviews the limited progress so far in translating Confucius, examines the remaining problems, and suggests some possible remedies. It concludes that translating the Analects is a sophisticated task that requires the translator to juggle demands from both philosophy and literature. To do this, the translator has to be equipped with literary sensibilities, philosophical insight, a thorough understanding of the Confucian text, a grasp of the syntactical differences between English and Classical Chinese, and a sensitivity to style and nuances of meaning.

Abstract:Chinese ancient prose culture has a long history and occupies an important place in the world civilization. Translation activities have played an important role in the process of cultural dissemination since ancient times. Xu Yuanchong, a Centennial translator in China, is an outstanding representative in the field of ancient prose translation. Eco-translation, as a theory of adaptation and transformation, is of great practical significance to the study of ancient Chinese translation in contemporary society, and has been fully applied in the English translation of the Analects of Confucius. Based on the three theories of ecological translation: translation ecological environment, adaptation and choice, and "three-dimensional" transformation, this paper studies Xu Yuanchong's English version of the Analects of Confucius, aiming at providing more research ideas for the English translation of the Analects of Confucius and making Confucianism better convey its value across ancient and modern times.

Abstract:Abstract This article examines the communicative effectiveness of translated versions of The Analects from an Anglophone perspective using a questionnaire-based survey targeting English-speaking academics. Sinologists, translators, and readers specializing in East Asian philosophy provided insights about their preferences, reading expectations, and opinions regarding the translations’ influence. The findings indicate a preference for translations that they considered to be not entirely fluent, but rather more accurate and in an easily accessible and readable form. Other important considerations include the content of translations and the translations’ influence on their value systems and cultural orientations. The study also suggests that collaborative efforts in translating Chinese classics could enhance quality, meet readers’ needs more effectively, and promote East–West cultural exchange. Recommendations are made for translators and publishers to support a more balanced interaction among scholars, translators, and readers in China and the Anglophone world, enriching Confucian studies with a communicative approach.

Abstract:The Analects of Confucius are classic works of ancient Chinese Confucian school, which contains a lot of culture-loaded words. And James Legge, Gu Hongming and Arthur Walley’s English translation of Analects is widely spread and highly recognized. Therefore, this paper will take Lectures on China’s Traditional Political Thoughts as an example to study the translation of culture-loaded words in three translated versions of The Analects of Confucius from the eco perspective. Relying on the Chinese ideological and cultural terminology Library under the project of “Chinese ideological and cultural terminology communication project”, this paper mainly combs and sums up the culture-loaded words in The Analects of Confucius respectively translated by James Legge, Gu Hongming, Arthur Waley. Based on the perspective of eco translatology, this paper makes a comparative study on translation methods of different schools from the perspectives of language, culture and communication, so as to improve the academic preciseness and accuracy of the translation.

Abstract:"The Analects," as a compilation of the words and deeds of Confucius and his disciples during the Spring and Autumn Period, stands as one of the classic works of the Confucian school of thought. This work is not only one of China's "four Books", but also occupies an important position in the global culture. The popularity of its numerous English translations reflects its profound influence worldwide. Based on the theory of Reception Aesthetics, this paper analyzes how the English translations by James Legge and Xu Yuanchong meet the expectations of readers in different cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, it points out that translation practices grounded in Reception Aesthetics not only enrich the expressive forms of literary works but also provide new perspectives for promoting cross-cultural communication and understanding.

Abstract:The language of the Analects of Confucius is concise, rich in connotation and highly abstract, so the problem of lack of meaning or semantic insufficiency is very obvious, and the numerical meaning is one of the most obvious examples. Based on Susan Bassnett view of cultural translation, this paper analyzes Gu Hongming's translated version of Analects and finds that there are great cultural differences between Chinese and Western numerals in terms of definite reference and vague reference. In addition to definite reference, Chinese numbers also have the function of vague reference; In English, numbers are mostly used in definite reference, and vague reference is mostly based on larger numbers. This increases the difficulty for translators and readers to understand the original work. In addition to having a solid bilingual foundation, the translator should have a profound bilingual cultural knowledge to realize the translation of cultural information behind the language. The theory of cultural translation has certain feasibility in guiding the translation of Chinese classics into English, which can promote the foreign translation of Chinese classics and has certain practical significance in promoting the transmission of Chinese culture to the world.

Abstract:In the context of implementing “Chinese Culture Exporting” strategy, it is difficult for Chinese translators of national classics to completely break down cultural barriers. For example, some high cultural context concepts such as “Li” (礼) cannot match the Western context, and classic translations are difficult to spread more widely. Ku's translation of ancient books is quite in line with the taste of the Western public, and is still widely spread. The translation strategies chosen to highlight the Chinese national culture have certain research value in the translation of Chinese classics and are of great help to the dissemination of Chinese culture. From the perspective of culture compensation, this paper classifies and analyzes the cross-cultural analogies in the Analects of Confucius translated by Ku, so as to extract the translator’s implicit translation strategies and good translator’s literacy, hoping to provide a solution to the problem of “culture barriers” in the translation of Chinese classical books.

Abstract:There are many translation versions of The Analects of Confucius, including the first version by the foreign emissaries to China, and the following versions at home and overseas, as well as modern and contemporary works by Chinese translators. The translation of The Analects became more and more diversified, and the research on The Analects was more and more in-depth. However, the translation of The Analects of Confucius began with ideological constraints that is hard to get rid of. This paper will refer to three translation versions from James Legge, Waley and Ku Hung-ming, in order to analyze the Christian, orientalism and Confucian culture ideological limitations on the translation of The Analects of Confucius. The paper argues that the translation of The Analects must be based on inheriting classic translation principles, accurately understand the original texts, aptly add to the annotations, break the ideological limitation, so as to translate and spread essence of Confucian classics better.

Abstract:Since 1980s, there has been an “ethical turn” in translation research, translation ethics research has not only focused on specific translation strategies and techniques, but also shifted its attention to the ethics behind the choices of translators. Unlike professional translators, scholar-translators are responsible for studying the original works, authors, and even the source language and culture, so their ethics behind their translation choices are more complex than professional translators’. Therefore, this study intends to analyze the translation strategies adopted by James Legge, a scholar-translator, at the linguistic and cultural levels, and to explore the ethical models of translation followed by him when he translated Confucian Analects. According to the analysis on Legge’s version of Confucian Analects, it can be concluded that “Faith” is the foundation of a scholar-translator’s translation ethics.

Abstract:The translator is the subject of translation, serving as a medium for cultural exchange and communication. However, translators in the external dissemination of Chinese culture have long been neglected and marginalized. With the “cultural turn” in translation studies, translators have gained due attention. As one of the representative works of Confucianism, Mencius is an important part of traditional Chinese culture, but its foreign translation is later than the Analects of Confucius and other classics, which also reflects the problem of scholars’ insufficient investment in its research. This paper makes a comparative analysis of how the English translation of the core concepts of Mencius by James Legge, Derk Bodde and D.C. LAU reflects the translator’s subjectivity, and in turn how the translator’s subjectivity affects their translation strategy, in order to make a contribution to the foreign translation of classics.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to provide a discussion of some of the basic differences and similarities between the Chinese and Western traditions of translation. After analysing some of the major findings about what is shared and what is unshared between the two traditions, as well as what lies beneath these differences and similarities, four basic conclusions are made; namely, (a) comparative translation studies is important and should be fully developed; (b) the differences between the Chinese and Western translation traditions are necessarily conditioned by differences in their broader socio-cultural framework; (c) quite similar ideas have been produced over the centuries between China and the West, which may be regarded as elements of ‘universality' as the most outstanding feature of theoretical discussions about translation across language-cultures; and most importantly, (d) an understanding of Chinese-Western differences and similarities should help create a meaningful environment in which translators and translation theorists from different traditions can draw upon one another's experiences. The rationale of the discussion is that by bringing culturally disparate translation traditions such as the Chinese and Western into comparison, important insights may be gained about the nature of translation and translation studies in general.

A Comparative Study of the English Versions of The Analects by Legge and Ku Hungming

Abstract:The Analects is one of the great works of traditional Chinese culture, and its translation has been an important part of cultural exchange in the past hundred years. The English versions of the Analects have reached more than 40, including that of James Legge’s and Ku Hungming’s. James Legge was a missionary and a famous British Sinologist; Ku Hungming was a famous Chinese scholar who got educated in the west. Their versions represent the highest level at that time. Legge is known for his rigorous responsibility to the original text, "faithful to the original". His version is of a scholar translation style, which can be summed up as "truthfully, lengthy and dull." Ku Hungming was renowned at home and abroad for his unique and weird style in Qing Dynasty. He received Western education and was deeply influenced by Western Romanticism. Most of his articles are written in English, even the native English speakers feel surprised by his extraordinary English proficiency. Ku also made great achievements in imputing Chinese classics to the west. In order to make the content easily acceptable to the Westerners, he tried his best to avoid Chinese names and places, and in order to evoke the original idea of the readers, he widely cited the western allusions and famous sayings. So Ku’s translations are widely spread in Europe. This paper focuses mainly on three parts. First, the translation differences of the two versions are investigated from the language to the overall translation techniques. Then, the causes of differences are analyzed, which include cultural background, Sinology skills, purposes and audience awareness. Finally, the way to translate Chinese classics like The Analects is briefly summarized.
