Abstract:We report here a Cu-catalyzed enantioselective acyloxylation of cyclic diaryliodonium salts. With readily available cyclic diaryliodonium salts and ubiquitous aliphatic or (hetero)aromatic carboxylic acids as the starting materials, various axially chiral acyloxylated 2-iodobiaryls were prepared in excellent yield and with excellent enantioselectivity (mostly 99% yield and 99% ee). Density functional theory calculations were conducted to reveal the stereo- and regioselectivities. This simple reaction protocol can be employed for the late-stage modification of some drug molecules. Finally, by diversity-oriented transformations, these acyloxylated 2-iodobiaryl products can be easily transformed into diverse valuable functionalized biaryls that could be used as chiral ligands or functional materials.

Abstract:The transition metal catalyzed ortho-functionalization of cyclic diaryliodonium salts have been well developed. Herein we present a transition-metal free meta-halogenation of readily available cyclic diaryliodonium salts for the preparation of valuable 2, 3'-dihalobiaryls which can be transformed into a wide range of functionalized biaryls. The key for this green process is the base-mediated generation of benzyne intermediate which was successfully captured and supported the proposed mechanism.

Abstract:Diaryliodonium Salts. Our research interest focusing on synthetic methodology with diaryliodonium salts, is summarized in this account. Besides employing a dual activation strategy of C−I and ortho C−H bonds, we have introduced vicinal functional groups at ortho‐positions of diaryliodonium salts, in which their unique reactivities have been explored in various processes, including arylation, diarylation, cascade annulation, benzocyclization, arylocyclization, and intramolecular aryl migration. The variety of mechanisms of these reactions that involves either transition metals, especially palladium in organometallic catalysis, or transition‐metal free conditions, were discussed in the context. This procedure provides a practical protocol to synthesize various diaryl and alkyl aryl sulfoxides in moderate-to-good yields. Abstract:Aryl amines are highly useful organic chemicals, but large-scale, transition-metal-free syntheses of aryl amines are surprisingly underdeveloped. A mild and scalable (up to 500 mmol) aryl amine synthesis from benzyne chemistry was invented using easily accessible aryl chlorides as precursors, NaH as a stoichiometric base, and a new type of sodium alkoxide cluster, X@RONa, as a catalyst. The cluster catalyst X@RONa featured an externally hydrophobic dodecameric sodium alkoxide shell housing an encapsulated center anion. The cluster made from methoxy-tert-butanol was found to be the most effective. The intramolecular version of this reaction allowed the synthesis of indolines and indoles. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies revealed that the rate-determining step was likely the transport of solid NaH into the X@RONa cluster in the organic phase.

Abstract:An efficient approach to sulfones through a reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, sulfur dioxide, and aryliodonium tetrafluoroborates under metal-free conditions is reported. This transformation proceeds in the presence of morpholin-4-amine and NaHSO3, leading to the formation of sulfones in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate the application of unsymmetrical iodonium salts towards S-arylation of heterocyclic thiols (especially tetrazole-5-thiols and pyridine-2-thiol) under metal-free conditions, affording a diverse range of di(hetero)aryl thioethers in moderate to good yields. A detailed study on the effects of counter-anions and the auxiliary of iodonium salts was conducted. Suitable auxiliary selection of the unsymmetrical iodonium salt offers flexibility for a wide range of aryl moieties and its incorporation into S-arylation. The DFT study supports the experimental observations of chemoselective arylation.

Abstract:Diaryliodonium salts have become widely recognized as arylating agents in the last two decades. Both, symmetrical and unsymmetrical forms of these salts serve as effective electrophilic arylating reagents in various organic syntheses. The use of diaryliodoniums in C–C and carbon–heteroatom bond formations, particularly under metal-free conditions, has further enhanced the popularity of these reagents. Abstract:Simple, small organic molecules containing nitrogen and oxygen atoms in their structures have been disclosed to catalyze transition-metal-free C–H arylation of unactivated arenes with aryl iodides in the presence of tBuOK. In this article, an optimized catalytically active molecule, (2-(methylamino)phenyl)methanol, was designed. A broad range of aryl iodides could be converted into the corresponding arylated products at 100 °C over 24 h with good to excellent yields. Mechanistic experiments verified that radicals participated in this catalytic transformation and that the cleavage of the aromatic C–H bond was not the rate determining step. A K+ capture experiment by 18-crown-6 emphasized the significance of the cation species of the strong base. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy proved that the catalytic system was activated by the hydrogen bonds between small organic molecules and tBuOK. Also, a clear mechanism was proposed. This transition-metal-free method affords a promising system for efficient and inexpensive synthesis of biaryls via a user-friendly approach, as confirmed by scale-up experiments.

Abstract:A concise synthesis of aryl enol ethers from allylic alcohols and arylsulfonium salts by simply using inorganic base as a mediator is described. The reaction enabled facile conversion of various α-aryl allylic alcohols to the corresponding aryl enol ethers in good yields with excellent selectivity. The results demonstrated that both symmetric triarylsulfonium triflate and 10-methyl-5-aryl-5,10-dihydrophenothiazin-5-ium salts were the effective arylation reagents for the base-initiated selective O-arylation and isomerization of α-aryl allylic alcohols. This reaction represents the first use of arylsulfonium salts as arylation reagents to access aryl enol ethers directly from allylic alcohols.

Abstract:A simple, general and efficient method is developed for the metal-free iodination of arylboronic acids. The protocol uses very cheap molecular iodine as the halide source and potassium carbonate as the base. The method is highly tolerant of various functional groups present in the substrates. Importantly, the iodination strategy can also be applied very effectively in the one-pot, two-step synthesis of biaryl derivatives.

Abstract:Organosulfur compounds are ubiquitous in agrochemicals, active pharmaceutical ingredients, natural products, catalysts, and functional materials. The efficient assembly of sulfur-containing skeletons through S(IV) intermediates has emerged as an actively explored direction in organic synthesis. In the past 7 years, our research group has been devoted to developing aryne-induced, sulfonium-zwitterionbased synthetic methodologies. In this account, we systematically overview our recent efforts on this topic, including sigmatropic rearrangements, ring opening of cyclic sulfides, and selective S-arylation of thiooxindoles. These distinct protocols feature mild conditions and avoid the use of transition metals, allowing facile access to structurally diverse organosulfur compounds. The working hypothesis for our reaction design and key historical precedents are also critically discussed. Abstract:An efficient Dess-Martin periodinane (DMP)-promoted dearylation of N-arylsulfonamides was developed through a highly selective oxidative cleavage of the inert C(aryl)—N bonds in secondary sulfonamides while leaving the S—N bond unchanged.This metal-free reaction proceeds under mild conditions and provides access to various biologically important primary sulfonamides,some of which are otherwise unattainable using conventional aminolysis and hydrolysis methods.The concise and efficient dearylation reaction provides the use of an aryl group as a removable protecting sulfonamide group under metal catalyst-free conditions.

Abstract:In the last 20 years, efficient transition metal catalysts for the α‐arylation of enolates have been introduced. Despite the popularity and utility of these reactions, there remains room for improvement (reduced costs, elimination of transition metals and specialized ligands). Herein is reported a general, scalable and green method for aroylation of simple diarylmethane pronucleophiles through direct acyl C–N cleavage of N‐Bn‐N‐Boc arylamides and N‐acylpyrroles under transition metal‐free conditions. Importantly, a 1 : 1 ratio of the amide to the pronucleophile is employed. Unlike. use of Weinreb amides, this method avoids preformed organometallics (organolithium and Grignard reagents) and does not employ cryogenic temperatures, which are difficult and costly to achieve on scale. The operationally simple protocol provides straightforward access to a variety of sterically and electronically diverse 1,2,2‐triarylethanones, a group of compounds with high‐value in medicinal chemistry.
