Abstract:Objectives: Dyslipidemia and vascular dysfunction both are important factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases. The triglycerides-to-HDL cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C ratio), which is a new comprehensive lipid index, as well as vascular function, have been reported to be useful in predicting cardiovascular disease. However, little is known of how they develop over time and the relationship between them. We analyzed their relationship in a Chinese cohort study to prove whether TG/HDL-C ratio is associated with vascular indices. Methods: We conducted an observational cohort study from 2013 to 2017 in Hanzhong, China, which included 515 adults aged 31 to 44 years in 2013; a representative 65.2% sample (n = 336) participated in a pilot follow-up in 2017. Demographic characteristics, including blood pressure (BP), triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and other physical examination findings were collected in both surveys. Results: Across TG/HDL-C ratio quartiles, there was a significant progressive increase in systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), serum creatinine, serum uric acid, body mass index, and baPWV, in both surveys. In the baseline, very high TG/HDL-C ratio group versus low TG/HDL-C ratio group had higher incidence of hypertension (32.1% vs.16.7%, P < 0.05) and baPWV [(1347.2 ± 277.8) vs. (1232.8 ± 207.1) cm/s, P = 0.003] in the follow-up period. However, we did not find any significant association between annual change in TG/HDL-C ratio and the progression of baPWV after adjusting for a wide range of standard cardiovascular risk factors. Conclusion: Higher TG/HDL-C ratio in earlier life may increase the risk of hypertension and developing arterial stiffness in the long run.
