Abstract:The advantages of low cost, high theoretical capacity, and dependable safety of aqueous zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) enable their promising use in flexible and wearable energy storage devices. However, achieving extended cycling stability in ZHSCs is still challenged by the limited availability of carbon cathode materials that can effectively pair with zinc anode materials. Here, we report a method for synthesising heteroatom-doped carbon nanofibers using electrostatic spinning and metal-organic frameworks (specifically ZIF-8). Assembled Zn//ZPCNF-1.5 ZHSCs exhibited 193 mA h g−1 specific capacity at 1 A g−1 and 162.6 Wh kg−1 energy density at 841.2 kW kg−1. Additionally, the device showed an ultra-long cycle life, maintaining 98% capacity after 20,000 cycles. Experimental analysis revealed an increase in the number of pores and active sites after adding ZIF-8 to the precursor. Furthermore, N doping effectively enhanced Zn2+ ions chemical adsorption and improved Zn-ion storage performance. This work provides a feasible design strategy to enhance ZHSC energy storage capability for practical applications.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc-ion batteries have received increasing attention because of their cost effectiveness, ecofriendliness, and high capacity. However, they suffer from poor rate capacities and low lifespans because of the uncontrolled formation of zinc dendrite on the zinc metal anode. Although replacing the zinc metal negative electrode could fundamentally solve the dendritic problem, it may lead to the lack of anodic Zn2+ source to sustain the charge carriers during charge-discharge. Here, by adopting a pre-zincation electrode treatment, we demonstrate a novel zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor (ZIS) by using GNS/ CNT@MnO2 electrode and activated carbon electrode as the positive and negative electrode, respectively. The ZIS exhibits a high specific energy of 41.5 Wh kg- 1 and excellent cycle stability. It retains over 81% of its initial capacitance and near 100% coulombic efficiency after 10000 cycles at 2 A g-1. We also create a Flexible Quasi-Solid-State Zinc-ion Hybrid Supercapacitor (FQSSZIS) by using a ZnSO4/MnSO4xanthan gel electrolyte and cheap graphite paper current collectors. Abstract:Zinc–ion hybrid supercapacitors are a promising energy storage device as they simultaneously combine the high capacity of batteries and the high power of supercapacitors. However, the practical application of Zinc–ion hybrid supercapacitors is hindered by insufficient energy density and poor rate performance. In this study, a symmetrical zinc–ion hybrid supercapacitor device was constructed with hollow mesoporous-carbon nanospheres as electrode materials, and aqueous ZnSO4 adopted as an electrolyte. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and high specific area (800 m2/g) of the hollow carbon nanospheres, fast capacitor-type ion adsorption/de-adsorption on both the cathode and the anode can be achieved, as well as additional battery-type Zn/Zn2+ electroplating/stripping on the anode. This device thus demonstrates outstanding electrochemical performance, with high capacity (212.1 F/g at 0.2 A/g), a high energy density (75.4 Wh/kg at 0.16 kW/kg), a good rate performance (34.2 Wh/kg energy density maintained at a high power density of 16.0 kW/kg) and excellent cycling stability with 99.4% capacitance retention after 2,500 cycles at 2 A/g. The engineering of this new configuration provides an extremely safe, high-rate, and durable energy-storage device.

Abstract:Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) are attracting significant attention due to their high energies/power densities, safety, and low cost. In this review, recent advances in the development of ZHSCs are summarized. Particular emphasis is placed on state-of-the-art cathodes (including carbon, metal oxides, MXenes, and redox-active polymers), anodes (including Zn-based composites and Zn-free materials) and electrolytes for ZHSCs. Furthermore, the latest research on functional ZHSC devices with miniaturized ZHSCs, fiber-shaped ZHSCs, self-chargeable ZHSCs and self-healing devices is reported. Finally, further developments with ZHSCs are envisaged for future research in this thriving field. This research is emphasized particularly on cathodes (such as carbon, metal oxides, MXenes, and redox-active polymers), anodes (such as Zn-based composite materials and Zn-free materials), electrolytes (organic/ionic liquid electrolytes, WiSs, redox electrolytes, polymer or solid electrolytes) as well as the design of a novel device for ZHSCs.

Abstract:Zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZICs) are considered as newly-emerging and competitive candidates for energy storage devices due to the integration of characteristic capacitor-level power and complementary battery-level energy. The practical application of rising ZICs still faces the specific capacity and dynamics mismatch between the two electrodes with different energy storage mechanisms, which cannot meet the ever-growing indicator demand for portable electronic displays and public traffic facilities. Focusing on these unresolved issues, this mini-review presents recent advances in ZICs referring to the hybrid energy storage mechanism, design strategies of both capacitor-type and battery-type electrode materials, and electrolyte research toward advanced performances (e.g., high operational potential, wide adaptive temperature). Finally, current challenges and future outlook have been proposed to guide further exploration of next-generation ZICs with a combination of high-power delivery, high-energy output and high-quality service durability.

Abstract:Low-cost supercapacitors with high energy densities have attracted great research attention, since it would broaden the application of capacitors. Increasing the capacitance is one principle to obtain a high energy density of a supercapacitor. In this study, a low cost aqueous Zn-based hybrid supercapacitor (AZHS) with high energy density is achieved using an actived carbon derived from corncob (denoted as ACC) as the positive electrode, zinc metal as the negative electrode, and the 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte. The actived carbon is prepared with a facile calcination-activation process, and it exhibits high specific surface area (2619 m(2) g(-1)). Though without extra heteroatom doping, ACC demonstrates a superb specific capacitance in acidic, alkaline and neutral electrolytes. The assembled AZHS exhibits a high energy density of 94 W h kg(-1) at 68 W kg(-1) in a potential window of 0.2-1.8 V, and an excellent cycle stability with only 1.8% capacitance decay is obtained after 10 000 cycles at 5 A g(-1). These results suggest that a low cost supercapacitor with high energy density can be achieved by a hybrid system design using electrodes with high capacitance.

Abstract:From both the cost and safety point of view, aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion based electrochemical energy storage devices are highly attractive as a substitute for lithium-ion batteries. The development of zinc‐iodine battery-capacitor hybrid devices (ZIBCHDs) properly integrated with zinc‐iodine batteries (ZIBs) and zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZICs) are desired to endure both the large energy density of ZIBs and the high-power density of ZICs. We demonstrated herein an N-doped porous carbon framework (3D) decorated with nanosheets (2D) hybrids can serve as a robust iodine host. Benefitting from its unique 3D2D microstructure, large BET surface area, and abundant surface functional groups, the resulting porous carbon/iodine cathodes can display battery level specific capacity and energy density as well as a supercapacitor level rate capability and cycle stability. The optimized cathode delivers a large reversible specific capacity of 291.5 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , which is much larger than the corresponding ZIBs (163.8 mAh g −1 ) and ZICs (148.9 mAh g −1 ) revealing the broadening potential window can effectively utilize carbon scaffold to further boost the specific capacity. Additionally, the energy storage mechanism was fully explored through a series of ex-situ testing techniques, and a combination of physical/chemical adsorption-desorption and redox reactions mechanism has been proposed.

Abstract:On-chip micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), as promising power candidates for microdevices, typically exhibit high power density, large charge/discharge rates, and long cycling lifetimes. However, as for most reported MSCs, the unsatisfactory areal energy density (<10 mu Wh cm(-2)) still hinders their practical applications. Herein, a new-type Zn-ion hybrid MSC with ultrahigh areal energy density and long-term durability is demonstrated. Benefiting from fast ion adsorption/desorption on the capacitor-type activated-carbon cathode and reversible Zn stripping/plating on the battery-type electrodeposited Zn-nanosheet anode, the fabricated Zn-ion hybrid MSCs exhibit remarkable areal capacitance of 1297 mF cm(-2) at 0.16 mA cm(-2) (259.4 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.05 A g(-1)), landmark areal energy density (115.4 mu Wh cm(-2) at 0.16 mW cm(-2)), and a superb cycling stability without noticeable decay after 10 000 cycles. This work will inspire the fabrication and development of new high-performance microenergy devices based on novel device design.
Aqueous V 2 O 5 /activated carbon zinc-ion hybrid capacitors with high energy density and excellent cycling stability

Abstract:Hybrid metal-ion capacitors are designed to promote the energy density of supercapacitors with less sacrifice of power density. Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor, based on the multivalent ion storage principle, is a kind of energy storage device in which both the high energy density and power density can be achieved. Here, we propose a new configuration of zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors composed of mild aqueous ZnSO 4 electrolyte, activated carbon (AC) anode and V 2 O 5 cathode. The operating voltage of the hybrid supercapacitor can reach to 2 V in the aqueous electrolyte when the mass ratio of AC to V 2 O 5 is 1:1. The maximum energy density of zinc-ion hybrid capacitor is about 3.9 times higher than that of AC symmetric supercapacitor, while its maximum power density is 1.7 times higher than that of zinc-ion battery. The capacity retention of the hybrid supercapacitors is 97.3% over 6000 charge–discharge cycles at 0.5 A g −1 . Compared with MnO 2 zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors system, the stable nature of V 2 O 5 allows new zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors system to achieve a better cycling performance. The unique electrochemical performance, low cost and high safety of the new zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor endow it with a very wide range of applications in consumer electronics and stationary energy storage.

Abstract:Zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZISCs), as one of emerging energy storage devices, have gained numerous attentions due to their high safety, satisfied energy/power output, low-cost and long-term durability. To construct a satisfying ZISC with high charge storage behavior, well-developed electrode structures and optimized electrolytes by effective strategies are highly demanded. However, current basic research is relatively far from its practical application, which has greatly deferred the large-scale production of ZISC and has become a key issue. Here, recent advances towards the ZISCs have been systematically summarized to meet such challenges, with a focus on the charge storage mechanism. In addition, insights into the development of electrodes and electrolytes are presented. It is worth believing that this review could be a medium for attracting more efforts to the early rise of ZISCs in terms of the sustainable material preparations and the advanced technique inventions.

Abstract:With rapid development of portable electronics and electric vehicles, high-performance energy storage devices are urgently needed; however, the existing energy storage systems often have some deficiency, such as low energy for supercapacitors, security risks for lithium-ion batteries and poor cycling stability for alkaline zinc/manganese dioxide batteries. Here we report a novel energy storage system of zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSs), in which activated carbon materials, Zn metal and ZnSO4 aqueous solution serve as cathode, anode and electrolyte, respectively. Reversible ion adsorption/desorption on AC cathode and Zn2+ deposition/stripping on Zn anode enable the ZHSs to repeatedly and rapidly store/deliver electrical energy, accompanying with a capacity of 121 mAh g−1 (corresponding to an energy of 84Whkg−1), a very large power output of 14.9kWkg−1 and an excellent cycling stability with 91% capacity retention over 10000 cycles. The extremely safe, high-rate and ultralong-life ZHSs are believed to provide new options for next-generation energy storage devices.

Abstract:The increasing demand for wearable electronic systems has driven research on portable electrochemical energy storage devices. Zinc-ion hybrid capacitors have recently received considerable attention owing to their benefits of environmental friendliness, safety, and low cost. However, their moderate energy density has severely hampered their use in portable electronic equipment. In this study, we used the sweet messes from glutinous rice alcoholic fermentation as a highly available green carbon source to prepare a new biomass-derived porous carbon material by mixing it with KOH under a nitrogen atmosphere. GRPC-A13 has a rich microporous structure, high micropore area (1991 m 2 g −1 ), and abundant oxygen content (7.0 at.%). Subsequently, a carbon-based zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor was assembled with GRPC-A13 as the cathode, and zinc foil and 2 mol/L ZnSO 4 as the anode and electrolyte, respectively. Zn//GRPC-A13 devices offer an ultrahigh energy density of 116 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 800 W kg −1 . In addition, they have a long lifetime of 270,000 constant-current charge/discharge cycles and still maintain 100 % Coulombic efficiency. This improvement is principally due to the rapid ion adsorption/desorption on the GRPC-A13 cathode electrodes and reversible zinc-ion plating/exfoliation on battery-type zinc negative electrodes. These results provide insight into the development of zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors in miniature electronics.

Abstract:The recent research on aqueous zinc‐ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) based on zinc metal anode has attracted great attention in energy storage systems due to the inherited merits of supercapacitors and batteries. However, the problems of sluggish diffusion of zinc ion, low utilization rate of zinc foil, and uncontrollable zinc dendrites limit the application of ZHSCs. In order to effectively solve the above problems, a ZHSC is constructed and investigated with a 2D layered titanium disulfide (TiS2) (de)intercalation battery‐type anode and an active carbon (AC) capacitor‐type cathode in 2 m ZnSO4 electrolyte. Notably, this ZHSC demonstrates a high specific capacitance of 249 F g−1 (0.2 A g−1), a superior energy density of 112 Wh kg−1 (180 W kg−1), and a high power density of 3600 W kg−1 (35 Wh kg−1) based on the total weight of the anode and cathode active materials. Furthermore, the ZHSC also shows long service life with a capacitance retention of 92% after 5000 cycles at a current density of 2 A g−1 This work provides a concept to design next‐generation high‐performance ZHSC by replacing the zinc foil anode with a (de)intercalation battery‐type anode.

Abstract:Integrating a battery‐type electrode to build a hybrid supercapacitor is a promising approach to improve the overall energy density of a supercapacitor‐type energy storage device without sacrificing its power output. However, this strategy is usually achieved at the expense of cycling lifespan. In this work, a hybrid supercapacitor comprising Zn foil and porous carbon derived from chemical activated graphene (aMEGO) is developed, and the trade‐off between energy density and cycling life is well‐balanced by the utilization of 3 m Zn(CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 electrolyte with high Zn stripping/plating efficiency. Such a hybrid supercapacitor demonstrates an energy density of 106.3 Wh kg −1 and a power density of 31.4 kW kg −1 , and significantly a wide operation voltage of 1.9 V is achieved in aqueous electrolyte. Benefitting from the high Zn stripping/plating efficiency, the Zn‐aMEGO hybrid‐supercapacitor also exhibits an ultralong cycling life up to 80 000 cycles with capacity retention of 93%, which is comparable to that of conventional electrochemical double‐layer capacitors.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion capacitors (ZICs) are promising for electric vehicles and stationary grid storage. To meet extreme needs, we here developed ZICs working under harsh conditions including ultrafast rates, sub-million cycles, high loadings, and wide temperatures through the incorporation of activated carbon (AC), aqueous binder, and concentrated electrolyte. AC exhibits large surface area, hierarchical porous structures, and abundant heteroatom dopants, aqueous binder enhances electrode-electrolyte wettability enabling high-mass-loading electrode, and concentrated electrolyte gives high Zn stripping/plating efficiency, high ionic conductivity as well as suppressed hydrogen bonding interaction in water realizing ultralow frozen temperature. Three keys combined unlock unprecedented ZICs with a large capacitance of 436 F g−1 (capacity: 200 mAh g−1), ultrahigh rate up to 200 Ag−1, ultralong cycles (0.3 million), ultrahigh loadings (10 mg cm−2) under lean electrolyte (8.8 µL mg−1), and wide-temperature operation (-60∼60 °C), leading to a maximal energy density of 134.8 Wh kg−1 and power density of 118.4 kW kg−1. A proton/Zn2+ ion co-interaction mechanism was revealed in the AC electrode. With low cost and extreme functionalities, this work opens an avenue towards practical supercapacitors beyond normal conditions.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors are considered to be a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage devices owing to their high safety, long life, and low price. In this paper, a nitrogen doped hierarchical porous carbon is evaluated as the cathode for aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors. Benefiting from the synergistic merits of excellent structural features of N-HPC and tiny zinc dendrite of Zn anode in ZnSO4 electrolyte, the zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor exhibits excellent energy storage performance including high capacity of 136.8 mAh·g−1 at 0.1·Ag−1, high energy density of 191 Wh·kg−1, large power density of 3,633.4 W·kg−1, and satisfactory cycling stability of up to 5,000 cycles with a capacity retention of 90.9%. This work presents a new prospect of developing high-performance aqueous rechargeable zinc ion energy storage devices.

Abstract:In recent years, the metal ion hybrid micro-supercapacitor (MSC) comprised of the battery-type Faradaic cathode based electrode and capacitor-type anode based electrode, can realize both high power and energy density, which becomes one of the most hottest areas of energy device. Herein, we demonstrated a zinc-ion hybrid micro-supercapacitor (ZIHMSC) by designing a Ti3C2Tx MXene based electrode as capacitor-type anode and vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) based electrode as battery-type cathode. In addition, the polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel where ZnSO4 dissolved was chosen as the electrolyte, which effectively avoids the security risks, unlike other hybrid MSC based on the organic electrolytes. Meanwhile, the flexible ZIHMSC also exhibits well electrochemical properties, displaying a remarkable capacitance (129 mF cm−2 under 0.34 mA cm−2), high energy density (48.9 μWh cm−2 at 673 μW cm−2) and well-cycle stability (retaining ~ 77% capacitance after 10,000 cycles). This work supports a prospective routine for constructing the new-generation flexible micro-energy storage systems.

Abstract:With the increasing demands for high-performance energy storage devices, aqueous zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZICs) attract lots of attention due to the integration of high-energy-density zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) and high-power-density supercapacitors (SCs). In addition, they hold some unique features such as high safety, low cost, and capable energy storage ability. Until now, many great results about ZICs have been achieved especially in the electrode materials exploring, ions storage mechanism, and device design. Herein, we exhaustively discuss the electrochemical characteristics, charge storage mechanism, and kinetic analysis of capacitor- and battery-type of electrode materials as well as summarize recent advances in materials and devices. Meanwhile, we point out the limitations and directions of their present development, which may give some guidance for commercializing Zn 2+ storage devices.

Abstract:The hydrogel electrolyte is an important part of safety and development potential in zinc-based energy storage equipment due to its inherent low mechanical strength and voltage decomposition. However, hydrogel electrolytes possess a reduced working life for zinc dendrites growth and a narrow voltage window. In this study, a hydrogel electrolyte prepares by the zwitterionic monomer [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) (MS) and sodium alginate (SA) alleviate these problems. The zwitterionic double-network hydrogel has good mechanical strength, inhibits the growth of zinc dendrites, enhances practicability, greatly increases the voltage window (0–2.4 V), and has self-healing properties to its rich functional groups. The assembled zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSs) have a high-power density of 172.33 W kg−1 and an energy density of 88.56 Wh·kg−1 at 0.5 A g−1. The assembled zinc-ion battery also has good electrochemical performance. Flexible ZHSs and batteries provide power to the timer stably under different bending angles. The zwitterionic double-network hydrogel can be applied to both zinc-based supercapacitors and batteries.

Abstract:Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) have received widespread attention because of their advantages of high power density, long lifetime, low cost and environmental protection, but they restricted to the low energy density mainly caused by low specific capacitance of carbon electrode materials. Herein, we design and utilize a novel method to synthesis of zinc and nitrogen co-doped zinc-based metal-organic framework derived porous carbon (ZMDPC) materials through the binding of two ligands. The obtained carbon materials show excellent electrochemical properties with high specific capacitance and cycling stability due to the zinc and nitrogen co-doping, excellent pore structure and high specific surface area. As a result, ZHSCs assembled by the zinc and nitrogen co-doped porous carbon cathode and zinc metal anode demonstrate an high specific capacitance of 255.6 F g–1, high energy density of 90.88 Wh kg–1, outstanding cycle stability and excellent rate performance. Furthermore, the supercapacitor exhibited a capacity retention of 97.8% after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g–1. The development provides an attractive route to design porous carbon electrodes based on various two-dimensional nanomaterials.
