Abstract:To obtain surreal and richer visual experience, augmented reality (AR) technology has been widely used in various areas. As a popular solution of AR, display using computer generated hologram (CGH) is often accompanied by blurring which is caused by uncontrolled interference. In this paper, a modified algorithm based on double-phase hologram (DPH) algorithm is proposed to reduce speckle noise in holographic reconstruction. The macro-pixels in the original hologram are separated into multiple sub-holograms, and these sub-holograms are displayed alternately in high frequency, which reduces the speckle noise generated from the interference between adjacent macro-pixels. Meanwhile, the method is less time-consuming than the traditional Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm because no iteration is needed. The simulation and the optical experiment based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) have been conducted, and the results confirm the feasibility of the proposed method to improve the image quality.

Abstract:A new algorithm for calculating computer-generated holograms (CGH's) is proposed. The hologram fringe pattern data is stored in the computer image format, and transmitted to a transmission-type liquid crystal panel by the video signal. It will be used for the real-time three-dimension imaging by holographic reconstruction. Questions of the effect of the solution, the contrast ratio of the liquid crystal panel and the modulation due to the gray-level of the hologram image are addressed. Therefore the distribution of the amplitude and phase on the holographic plane is determinated by confirming image plane distribution considering the above effects. The reconstructed data is made as similar as possible to the source data by the optimal code. Experimental results,and value the quality of the reconstructed image are given.

Abstract:In this paper the research of the real-time three-dimensional holographic imaging system which uses liquid crystal panels to display the computer generated Fresnel holograms for reconstructed 3D images is described. The reconstructed effects are related to each step of the process and the characteristics of the devices. The contradictions between the quantization of holographic numerical data and the properties of the display device are the important reasons for the reconstruction errors. A new algorithm for calculating point holograms is proposed for reducing the reconstruction errors. Finally the original experimental result is given.

Abstract:This Letter proposes a spatial frequency regaining method for parallel holographic illumination (SFR-PHI) to suppress speckle noise in phase-only computer-generated holography (CGH). Based on the accurate calculation of the beam bandwidth, this method uses the bandwidth-limited quadratic initial phase and weighted constraint iteration to generate the optimized phase hologram, which can provide the accurate spatial frequency of multiple illumination patterns. The results show that SFR-PHI performs superiorly in speckle suppression for generating dozens of illumination patterns in parallel and with arbitrary shapes and numbers. Compared with other speckle-suppression methods, it exhibits significant advantages in terms of accuracy and modulation efficiency.

Abstract:Holographic techniques enable precise laser manipulation, but suffer from two considerable limitations: speckle and deterioration of axial distribution. Here, we propose a cylindrical quadratic phase (CQP) method with temporal focusing (TF) to generate speckle-free holographic illumination with high axial resolution. TF-CQP utilizes a superposed cylindrical phase as the initial guess to iteratively optimize phase hologram, realizing speckle-free holographic reconstruction on the target focal plane and eliminating secondary focus on the defocused planes. TF-CQP further disperses defocused beams symmetrically by a blazed grating, placed conjugate to the focal plane, which enhances axial confinement. Simulation and experimental results show that TF-CQP reconstructs speckle-free illumination with arbitrary shapes and <10 µm axial resolution. Compared to TF-GS (Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm), widely used in holographic optogenetics, TF-CQP shows increased uniformity of 200% and improved modulation efficiency of 32.33% for parallel holographic illumination, as well as a 10% increment in axial resolution.

Abstract:Speckle can be attenuated by averaging the reconstructed images of each sub-hologram or being filtered with different filters, at the expense of resolution. We propose a de-speckling method for a single-shot digital hologram while maintaining the resolution. Different tip-tilt phases are demonstrated to cause changes only for the speckle distributions of the reconstructed image. The speckle is attenuated by averaging these intensity images with different speckle distributions. The normalized contrast can be reduced to 0.56 by averaging only 20 different reconstructed images. When the averaged image is processed with block matching and 3D filtering, a further de-speckled image at a normalized contrast of 0.46 can be obtained with highly preserved resolution.

Abstract:We present a speckle reduction method to generate phase holograms with high-quality optical reconstruction based on optimized phase modulation. An initial phase with continuous and band-limited spectrum is utilized to iteratively optimize the phase modulation in the image plane. The optimized phase is used to modulate the object wave field, and the phase hologram is then calculated from the modulated object wave field. Phase distribution of the reconstructed image with our method is smoothly distributed and contains less phase singularities, which helps to reduce speckle noise in optical reconstruction. The proposed method can improve the reconstruction quality effectively, and eliminate the speckle noise induced by the random diffuse phase.

Abstract:One-shot digital holographic imaging has the advantages of high stability and low temporal cost. However, the reconstruction is affected by the speckle noise. Resampling ring-mask method in spectrum domain is proposed for speckle reduction. The useful spectrum of one hologram is divided into several sub-spectra by ring masks. In the reconstruction, angular spectrum transform is applied to guarantee the calculation accuracy which has no approximation. N reconstructed amplitude images are calculated from the corresponding sub-spectra. Thanks to speckle's random distribution, superimposing these N uncorrelated amplitude images would lead to a final reconstructed image with lower speckle noise. Normalized relative standard deviation values of the reconstructed image are used to evaluate the reduction of speckle. Effect of the method on the spatial resolution of the reconstructed image is also quantitatively evaluated. Experimental and simulation results prove the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:One-shot digital holographic imaging has the advantages of high stability and low temporal cost. However, its reconstruction is degraded severely by the laser speckle. A rectangle, ellipse, and diamond resampling mask method in spatial domain for speckle reduction is proposed. The effectiveness of the method for speckle reduction is explained successfully. In the method, one hologram recorded in a certain size is divided into N=S×T sub-holograms. Angular spectrum transform is applied to the holographic reconstruction of a diffuse object. N reconstructed amplitude images are calculated from the corresponding sub-holograms. Benefitting from speckle's random distribution, superimposing these N uncorrelated amplitude images would lead to a final reconstructed image with reduced speckle. Normalized relative standard deviation values of the reconstructed image are in good agreement with the asymptotical law. The maximum relative errors between the experiment data and the theoretical values are below 7.2%. The effect of the method on the spatial resolution of the reconstructed image is also quantitatively evaluated. Experimental and simulation results prove the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Optical holography has undergone rapid development since its invention in 1948, but the accompanying speckles with randomly distributed intensity are still untamed now due to the fundamental difficulty of eliminating intrinsic fluctuations from irregular complex-field superposition. Despite spatial, temporal and spectral averages for speckle reduction, it is extremely challenging to reconstruct high-homogeneity, edge-sharp and shape-unlimited images via holography. Here we predict that holographic speckles can be removed by narrowing the probability density distribution of encoded phase to homogenize optical superposition. Guided by this physical insight, a machine-learning-assisted probability-shaping (MAPS) method is developed to prohibit the fluctuations of intensity in a computer-generated hologram (CGH), which empowers the experimental reconstruction of irregular images with ultralow speckle contrast (C=0.08) and record-high edge sharpness (~1000 mm-1). It breaks the ultimate barrier of demonstrating high-end CGH lithography, thus enabling us to successfully pattern arbitrary-shape and edge-sharp structures such as vortex gratings and two-dimensional random barcodes.

Abstract:Phase-only holograms could be displayed with a single phase-only SLM free from the zero-order diffraction and the twin image. Addition of random phase to the object light in computer-generated holograms (CGHs) can widely diffuse the object light and to avoid its concentration on the CGH. But it causes speckle noise in the reconstructed image. Speckle reducing methods could be classified as iterative and non-iterative methods. Non-iterative methods are fast and effective, such as random displaced phase distribution (RDPD) and error diffusion (ED). The drawbacks are degradation of the reconstruction at different spatial frequencies. Point spread function (PSF) works as the impulse response of optical reconstruction system. Its Fourier transform, optical transfer function (OTF), gives a set of coefficients for plane waves of various spatial frequencies and orientations. The evaluation of OTF could quickly determine which spatial frequency components are passed or attenuated for the CGH display. The non-iterative methods for speckle noise reduction on reconstructed images in spatial frequency domain is analyzed.

Abstract:In recent years, digital holographic microscopy has attracted intensive attention for its capability of measuring complex shapes. There are two parts in digital holographic microscopy, hologram recording and digital diffractive reconstruction. Speckles are inevitable in the recorded interferometric patterns, thereby polluting the reconstructed surface topographies. Three reconstruction algorithms, i.e. Fresnel transform, Fresnel-wavelets and the proposed Fresnel-NSCT algorithms were compared. Three typical structures, rectangular, spherical and triangular surfaces were adopted for analysis. The performance of the three reconstruction algorithms on speckle removal and feature preservation was investigated comprehensively. Signal-Noise-Ratio (SNR) and Peak-Signal-Noise-Ratio (PSNR) were used as the numerical criteria. It is found that the Fresnel-NSCT algorithm has great superiority over the other two, subsequently it is promising for applications in the diffractive reconstruction of structured surfaces.

Abstract:The Gerchberg–Saxton algorithm is widely recognized as one of the most popular methods for calculating phase-only holograms. However, due to bandwidth limitations, this iterative method is not suitable for designing subwavelength resolution holograms. To address this challenge, we have modified the angular spectrum method (ASM) by incorporating additional information to compensate for lost high-frequency details in inverse propagation. In order to mitigate optical speckle artifacts that arise in the computational process, we have integrated the double amplitude freedom (DAF) into our approach. Furthermore, we have implemented a narrow probability distribution in the initial phase mask as a key strategy to minimize fluctuations in the intensity of the reconstructions. Our proposed method has successfully achieved subwavelength resolution reconstructions with reduced speckle noise.

Abstract:An iterative method with bandwidth constraint strategy is proposed to design phase holograms for high-quality speckle-free optical reconstruction. The bandwidth properties of the reconstructed field are analyzed theoretically based on the sampling theory, which helps in properly allocating the sampling resources for efficiently describing the speckles and artifacts in the reconstructed field. Iterative calculation with bandwidth constraint strategy of the reconstructed field and quadratic initial phase can optimize the phase hologram without stagnation problem, which provides effective controls of the reconstructed intensity fluctuations and helps to suppress the speckles and artifacts. Numerical and optical experiments have been performed to validate the proposed method can achieve excellent image fidelity.

Abstract:Digital holography is a promising imaging technology. However, there is speckle noise in the reconstructed image of a digital hologram. Speckle degrades the quality of the reconstructed image. Suppression of speckle noise is a challenging problem in digital holography. A novel method is proposed to reduce speckle by a fast logistic adaptive non-local means (LA-NLM) algorithm. In the proposed method, the logistic function is incorporated into the weight calculation of the NLM algorithm to account for multiplicative speckle noise. Filtering parameters are dynamically adjusted according to the statistical property of speckle in the reconstructed image. To enhance computational efficiency, the proposed algorithm takes advantage of the integral image technique to speed up the calculation of the similarity between image patches. Simulated and experimental digital holograms are obtained to verify the proposed method. The results show that the speckle noise is effectively suppressed in digital holography. The proposed method is efficient and feasible, and can be applied to such fields as three-dimensional display, holographic measurement, and medical diagnosis.

Abstract:The Gerchberg–Saxton (GS) algorithm is a widely employed algorithm for phase-only hologram (POH) generation. However, the POHs which can strictly satisfy the amplitude constraints on the object and the holographic plane may not exist or be obtained, resulting in speckle noise and reduction of the reconstruction quality. Relaxing the amplitude constraint during the iterations is an effective method to solve the above problem. In this work, a GS-double amplitude freedom (GS-DAF) algorithm is proposed. The amplitude constraint relaxation is realized by both the combined amplitude constraint and the support constraint. The spherical initial phase and oversampling method are applied to further improve the optical reconstruction quality of the GS-DAF algorithm. An enhanced reconstruction quality with less speckle noise has been achieved.

Abstract:Complex-amplitude hologram can provide a high-quality image that is free of twin image and zero-order noise. Multi-SLMs methods, single SLM with space-division modulations and super pixel methods were striving to meet the requirements of complex amplitude modulation. In this work, we propose an ultra-thin dielectric metasurface to improve the quality of holographic image by loading complex amplitude hologram. This metasurface controls the amplitude and phase simultaneously and independently in transmission mode. The multipole expansion method is applied to analyze the mechanism. The polarization conversion efficiency can be up to 99% and the diffraction efficiency is 71%. The simulations verify that the quality of holographic image could be greatly improved by a complex-amplitude metasurface.

Abstract:Computer-generated holography provides an approach to modulate the optical wavefront with computationally synthesized holograms. Since the hardware implementation for complex wavefronts is not yet available, double-phase decomposition is utilized as a complex encoding method of converting a complex wavefront to a double-phase hologram. The double-phase hologram adapts a complex wavefront for the phase-type devices, but the reconstruction is plagued by the noise caused by spatial-shifting errors. Here, a spectral-envelope modulated double-phase method is proposed to suppress the spatial-shifting noise with an off-axis envelope modulation on the Fourier spectrum of a double-phase hologram. This proposed method out-performs conventional on-axis double-phase method in optical reconstructing accuracy with indicated 9.54% improvement in PSNR and 196.86% improvement in SSIM.
