Abstract:Exercise therapy is one of the comprehensive therapies for Alzheimer's disease besides drug treatment. But how to exercise is still controversial. The purpose of this study was to observe the effectiveness of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (self-designed exercise program) on the cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Sixty-five participants were randomly divided into aerobic exercise group (n=32) and control group (n=33). Patients in exercise group were given 40-min moderate intensity aerobic exercise training, 3 times per week for 4 months. The patients in control group only completed daily activities and did not receive aerobic exercise. Cognition function scales (MMSE, ADAS-cog and WMS-IV) were performed at baseline and after 4 and 8 months. After 4 months treatment and then 4 months follow-up, the MMSE and WMS-IV of exercise group were significantly higher than before treatment and control group (P<0.05). ADAS-cog was significantly lower than that before treatment and control group (P<0.05). After 4 months of treatment, the MMSE of control group was higher than before treatment (P<0.05). After 4 months follow-up, WMS-IV was significantly lower than that before treatment (P<0.05). The moderate-Intensity aerobic exercise can improve the cognitive function, especially memory function in AD patients.
