Abstract:The development of solvent-free, metal-free, recyclable organic catalysts is required for the current chemical fixation of carbon dioxide converted into cyclic carbonates. With the goal of reducing the cost, time, and energy consumption for the coupling reaction of CO(2)and epoxides, a series of highly active heterogeneous catalysts, based on a thiourea and quaternary ammonium salt system, are synthesized by using a thiol-ene click reaction under ultraviolet light. Benefitting from synergistic interactions of the electrophilic center (thiourea) and the nucleophilic site (ammonium bromide), the catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic selectivity (99 %) for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with a diverse range of epoxides under mild conditions (1.2 MPa, 100 degrees C). Moreover, the catalyst can be easily recycled by facile filtration and reused for 5 times without noticeable loss of activity and selectivity. This work provides a potential heterogeneous catalyst for the conversion of carbon dioxide into high value-added chemicals with the combined advantages of low cost, easy recovery, and satisfactory catalytic properties.

Abstract:Asymmetric cyanation of a class of easily available olefins with a favorable cyanide source ethyl cyanoformate (CNCOOEt) was realized by an interesting modular catalyst. High yields and ee values were obtained for a range of substrates under solvent-free and mild reaction conditions. Abstract:The metallic catalyst-dominated alternating copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides has flourished for 50 years; however, the involved multistep preparation of the catalysts and the necessity to remove the colored metal residue in the final product present significant challenges in scalability. Herein, we report a series of highly active metal-free catalysts featured with an electrophilic boron center and a nucleophilic quaternary ammonium halide in one molecule for copolymerization of epoxides and CO2. The organocatalysts are easily scaled up to kilogram scale with nearly quantitative yield via two steps using commercially available stocks. The organocatalyst-mediated copolymerization of cyclohexane oxide and CO2 displays high activity (turnover frequency up to 4900 h(-1)) and >99% polycarbonate selectivity in a broad temperature range (25-150 degrees C) at mild CO2 pressure (15 bar). At a feed ratio of cyclohexane oxide/catalyst = 20000/1, an efficiency of 5.0 kg of product/g of catalyst was achieved, which is the highest record achieved to date. The unprecedented activity toward CO2/epoxide copolymerization for our catalyst is a consequence of an intramolecular synergistic effect between the electrophilic boron center and the quaternary ammonium salt, which was experimentally ascertained by reaction kinetics studies, multiple control experiments, B-11 NMR investigation, and the crystal structure of the catalyst. Density functional theory calculations further corroborated experimental conclusions and provided a deeper understanding of the catalysis process. The metal-free characteristic, scalable preparation, outstanding catalytic performances along with long-term thermostability demonstrate that the catalyst could be a promising candidate for large-scale production of CO2-based polymer.

Abstract:Electrochemically converting CO2 into valuable hydrocarbon products offers a promising avenue to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. However, enhancing the selectivity of a certain hydrocarbon product, particularly in ethylene, remains a challenge due to the limitation of the scaling relationship. Herein, we present a CuO-CeO2 hybrid catalyst, developed through interface engineering, that significantly improves the selectivity of ethylene. Benefiting from the structure nature of CeO2 quantum dots, abundant interfaces of CeO2 and CuO were constructed to provide more active sites for catalysis. Moreover, the strong interface interaction between ceria and CuO was experimentally demonstrated to enhance the adsorption of CO2 and CO and thus improve the intrinsic activity of CO2 reduction. The optimal catalyst delivered an impressing ethylene selectivity (49.7%) and partial current density (197 mA/cm2). More broadly, this work not only provides an effective strategy to construct abundant heterointerfaces but also opens new possibilities for designing advanced hetero-catalysts for CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Ag/Se could be easily fabricated by calcining selenium and silver powders. It was found to be an efficient catalyst for the selective epoxidation of the endocyclic C=C bond of beta-ionone to produce beta-ionone epoxide, an important organic intermediate in pharmaceutical industry. It is notable that the reaction can employ molecular oxygen as the cheap, clean and relatively safe oxidant, and no additives such as NHPI are required. The green process makes the method practical for large-scale application.
Efficient Cu/CeO<sub>2</sub> for Ketonization of Carboxylic Acids with Synergistic Interactions

Abstract:Cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts are critical to the ketonization of carboxylic acids for producing biofuels and platform chemicals. Herein, nanocrystalline Cu-loaded CeO2 with 1.0-9.0 wt % Cu loadings was synthesized by the precipitation-impregnation method, in which 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 exhibits the best performance of 72% acetone yield at 330 degrees C, 97% 3-pentanone yield at 360 degrees C, and 86% 4-heptanone yield at 400 degrees C, with good durability up to 10 h on stream. Detailed analyses reveal that 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 has the highest percentage of O-vacancy sites, more moderate acid-base sites, and better capacity to adsorb and activate carboxylic acids. In situ DRIFT spectra indicate that monodentate, bridging bidentate, and chelating bidentate modes coexist when carboxylic acid is dissociatively adsorbed on 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2. Based on the above investigations, we propose a mechanism over 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 through the beta-ketoacid intermediate route, which gives more details to help future research into the design and development of catalysts for ketonization.

Abstract:As an important intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis, 5,6-epoxy-ss-ionone has unique industrial application value. Recently, an iron-doped Se/C catalyst has been designed and prepared by calcining a mixture of methylselenized glucose with FeCl3. The material could activate the molecular oxygen to achieve the selective epoxidation of ss-ionone affording 5,6-epoxy-ss-ionone. The catalyst is stable and recyclable, and the catalytic reaction process did not require any additive, so that the production cost could be obviously reduced. This cheap and safe catalytic oxidation technology using molecular oxygen as oxidant is of good industrial application values.

Abstract:Hexavalent Se? Yes! Selenium on polymers exhibits quite different properties compared to that in small molecules. Hexavalent Se, rare in organoselenium chemistry, was found to be the major species on polymers. The high-valent Se species on recyclable polymer resins could quickly catalyze the oxidation reaction of cyclohexene with H2O2 in water to produce industrially important intermediate trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol in almost quantitative yield. In the catalytic cycle, high valent Se species were reduced to divalent Se, a highly activated species that could be re-oxidized by air so that no excess H2O2 was required for the reaction. The results were superior to those of reactions catalyzed by small molecules, for which excess H2O2, long reaction time or expensive CF3-activated catalysts and environmentally unfriendly MeCN solvent were required.

Abstract:In this study, Se-doped carbon, which is different from reported Se-containing compounds or materials, did not act as an oxygen carrier catalyst in the reaction of ethyl 2-(2-aminothiazole-4-yl)-2-hydroxyiminoacetate with H2O2 but participated in the reaction as a solid acid catalyst, and thus, the Beckmann rearrangement occurred to produce the useful Cefixime derivative. Unique steric hindrance of carbon support restrained the side reactions through nucleophilic reaction paths. As the first example for using Se-containing materials as solid acid catalyst, this work may inspire new ideas for Se catalyst development. This novel material has advantages of easy fabrication method and high catalyst turnover number (TON = 1.1 x 10(4)).

Abstract:(S)-aromatic epoxides are of great importance in the production of pharmaceuticals and biologically active natural products. Consequently, developing efficient, ecofriendly, and economical methods for production of (S)-aromatic epoxides continues to be of tremendous interest in organic synthesis. Herein, we report a novel protocol for the efficient synthesis of (S)-aromatic epoxides by coupling mechanochemical synthesis and biocatalysis from commercially available and cheap materials. The first step of the process is the halogenation of aromatic ketones with N-halosuccinimides (NXS) under ball-milling conditions to form alpha-haloaromatic ketones. This is followed by a one-pot asymmetric bioreduction-cyclization sequence affording the various (S)-aromatic epoxides in good yields, which are pure enough without further purification. Compared to the traditional chemical approaches, this mechano-biocatalytic protocol has prominent advantages, including inexpensive starting materials, short reaction time, simplicity of operation, environmental benignity, broad substrate spectrum, good to excellent enantioselectivities, and easy isolation of products.

Abstract:Catalysis plays a key role in oriented biomass valorization, and designing a robust catalyst and developing its correspondingly easy-to-scale-up preparation are particularly crucial in boosting biorefinery concept into reality. In this study, employing sulfur vacancies in MoS3 and their preferable adsorption to Co ions, CoS-MoS2 catalyst was fabricated via decomposition of MoS3 followed by in situ sulfidation of Co oxides. Co could be located at the edges of MoS2, constructing plenty of CoS–edge interfaces. This critical feature of the interface enhanced the adsorption of the reactant and decreased the energy barrier of the rate-limiting step in the deoxygenation of 4-methylphenol, leading to as high as 100% toluene yield at a low temperature of 120 °C. Moreover, this catalyst presented high stability in the deoxygenation reaction and could efficiently convert other lignin-derived aromatic oxy-compounds into arenes. Importantly, this facile method shows good versatility in fabricating different iron family element-promoted MoS2-based catalysts, and this preparation procedure is readily scaled up 200-fold without compromising catalytic activity, showcasing the potential for large-scale applications.

Abstract:A novel heterogeneous and porous FeSe2_x @C-5 with abundant Se vacancies (V-se) was facilely synthesized via one-step carbonization-selenization approach from Fe-MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) and firstly applied in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for iohexol (IOH) removal, exhibiting extraordinary catalytic performance with superior stability and adaptability. The roles and functions of V-se in the reaction system are deeply elucidated. Strikingly, systematic characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that V-se can modulate the surface electronic structure and accelerate Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle, leading to the strengthened binding energy and accelerated charge deliver for PMS activation. Accordingly, Iohexol (15 mg/L) can be eliminated within 30 min in FeSe2_x @C-5/PMS system, with apparent reaction rate constant (k(app)) 23.7 times higher than that in FeSe2/ PMS system. This study not only contributes to a tutorial guideline for designing high-performance catalysts by virtue of structural control and V-se engineering, but also extends its potential application in low-strength wastewater treatment.

Abstract:One of the most promising options for phomilliliters carbon dioxide reduction along with aerobic oxidative cyclization reaction by Eosin-Y-based light harvesting photocatalysts remains a key challenge. Here, we unveil the first-ever synthesis of unique in situ Se-infused Eosin-Y (Sein-EY) flexible photocatalyst, achieved through a simple one-pot method. The as-synthesized Sein-EY flexible films photocatalyst exhibits outstanding performance for the production of formic acid (204 μM in 2 hrs) and aerobic oxidative cyclization of thioamides through the creation of C–N/C–S bonds with outstanding yields (98.6%) when exposed to solar light. The presence of infused Se significantly extends the solar light absorption capacity of the Sein-EY photocatalyst, reaching up to 580 nm. This study opens up new pathway for the rational design and synthesis of potentially effective Se-infused-EY photocatalysts through a simple and scalable method, enabling both solar chemical production and efficient one-pot three-component reactions.Keywords: Sein-EY Photocatalyst, NADH regeneration, Carbon dioxide reduction, aerobic oxidative cyclization, Solar light

Abstract:Most organic reactions require the usage of volatile organic compounds in the synthesis,work-up and purification processes,thus resulting in major environmental pollution and high manufacturing cost.By using cheap biomass lactic acid as the reaction media and catalyst,a sustainable protocol for the synthesis of Z-3-selenocyanatoacrylates and analogues through green selenocyanation of activated alkynes has been achieved.A principal advantage of this protocol is that the usage of organic volatile compounds can be avoided entirely,as the conve rsion of substrate is almost quantitative or quantitative with a minimal amount of lactic acid employed as reaction media,and the pure products can be conveniently collected through water precipitation.

Operando Reconstruction of Porous Carbon Supported Copper Selenide Promotes the C2 Production from CO2RR

Abstract:A novel porous carbon‐supported copper selenides electrocatalyst has a high C2‐product yield and especially after an electrochemical CO2RR reconstruction process, the C2‐selectivity surged, most remarkably for ethanol. The Faradic efficiency (FE) of C2‐products (ethylene and ethanol) achieved is as high as ≈85.2% with a partial current density of 229.5 mA cm‐2. Precisely regulating surface reconstruction of copper (Cu) chalcogenides‐based catalysts to promote the multicarbon (C2+)selectivity of the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is hampered by the challenging control of the intractable anions and the optimal Cuδ+ reduction (0 < δ < 1). Herein, a porous carbon‐supported copper selenides electrocatalyst that can remarkably improve the C2‐product yield and especially unveil the time‐revolved electrochemical CO2RR reconstruction process to enable the high C2‐selectivity, most notably for ethanol is constructed. The Faradic efficiency (FE) of C2‐products achieved is as high as ≈85.2% with a partial current density of 229.5 mA cm−2. Operando infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations unravel that the surface Se vacancies (VSe) formation brings closer the neighboring Cu+ atoms and activates the Cu sites, thereby rendering efficient generation of the key intermediates (*CO and *CHO) and lowering the C–C coupling barrier for C2 production. The appearance of metallic Cu can shorten the next‐nearest Cu0–Cu+ distance for O atom to bridge in, leading to the preferential formation of *OC2H4 towards ethanol instead of C–O bond cleavage to form ethylene. This work opens the avenue of designing suitable local atomic structures catalysts to engage the intermediates for targeted CO2RR products.

N/Se co-doped porous carbon catalyst derived from a deep eutectic solvent and chitosan as green precursors: Investigation of catalytic activity for metal-free oxidation of alcohols

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped porous carbon-based materials with high surface area compared to their metal-based homologs are considered environmentally friendly and ideal catalysts for organic reactions. In this paper, a new method for the convenient fabrication, cost-effective, and high efficiency of nitrogen/selenium co-doped porous carbon-based catalysis (marked as N/SePC-T) was designed. The N/SePC-T catalysts were created from the direct pyrolysis of a eutectic solvent containing choline chloride/urea as the nitrogen-rich carbon source, selenium dioxide as a source of heteroatom and chitosan as a secondary carbon source in different temperatures (T). The efficacy of the carbonization temperature on the pore structure, morphology, and catalytic activity of the N/SePC-T materials was investigated and displayed, the N/SePC-900 (having a surface area of 562.01 m2/g and total pore volume of 0.2351 cm3 g-1) has the best performance. The morphology, structure, and physicochemical properties of N/SePC-900 were characterized using various analyses including XRD, TEM, TGA, FE-SEM, EDX, FT-IR, XPS, and Raman. The optimized N/SePC-900 catalyst indicated excellent catalytic performance in the oxidation of benzylalcohols to corresponding aldehydes in very mild conditions.
