Abstract:Generally, microorganisms are easy to attach onto a solid surface. Attached microorganisms will form a biofilm on the surfaces of medical implants and cause infections. The aim of this paper is to develop and evaluate Nickel-Phosphorous based nanocomposite coatings using electroless plating technique and demonstrate their potential applications in preventing bacterial adhesion. Nano polytetrafluoroethylene and titanium dioxide were incorporated into nickel-phosphorous film by electroless plating technique. A Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy is employed to analyze the films. The antibacterial performance of these films was also tested using two bacterial strain (E. coli and S. aureus). The number of adhered bacterial cells onto nanocomposite films was evaluated by a fluorescence microscope. The images were captured by HighResolution CCD Camera, then analyzed by Image-Pro Plus software. Surface energy and corresponding parts can be obtained through van-Oss-acid/base method from the contact angles of these films. The relationship between surface free energy and the amount of adhered bacterial cells has also been investigated in this study.
