Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.
Enhanced Low-Temperature CO Oxidation Activity Through Crystal Facet Engineering of Pd/CeO2 Catalysts

Abstract:Cerium dioxide (CeO2) 2 ) supported palladium (Pd) catalysts have found widespread application in CO oxidation reaction owing to their exceptional catalytic performance. The morphology of the CeO2 2 support dictates the exposed crystal plane, exerting a profound influence on surface structure and redox properties. This is crucial as the atomic arrangement at the surface directly impacts catalytic activity. In this study, a range of CeO2 2 supports with diverse morphologies ( e.g. nano-octahedra, nano-cubes, nano-particles, nano-spheres, and nano-rods) were successfully synthesized through hydrothermal methods and subsequently supported with Pd for CO oxidation. The spherical 1Pd/CeO2-S 2 -S catalyst, revealing exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes, exhibited significantly higher CO catalytic oxidation activity compared to the catalysts with other morphological CeO2 2 supports. The results indicated a positive correlation between the content of Pd x Ce 1-x O 2-y species and catalytic activity. Notably, this species was most abundantly formed in the spherical 1Pd/CeO2-S 2 -S catalyst with exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes. The presence of this active species facilitated the formation of surface defects, increased oxygen vacancy concentration, and enhanced metal-support interaction, consequently greatly improving the CO low-temperature catalytic oxidation activity. Consequently, the oxidation state of Pd in the Pd/CeO2 2 catalyst could be effectively regulated by controlling the exposure of (111) + (100) crystalline surfaces of the CeO2 2 support, further optimizing the catalytic performance of the Pd/CeO2 2 catalytic system.

Abstract:Catalysts consisting of palladium supported on cerium dioxide (Pd/CeO2) were prepared and used for carbon monoxide oxidation in a stoichiometric mixture of carbon monoxide and oxygen. Pd/CeO2 exhibits high catalytic activity for the oxidation of CO, showing markedly enhanced catalytic activities due to the combined effect of palladium and cerium dioxide. The Pd/CeO2 catalyst is superior to Pd/ZrO2, Pd/Al2O3, Pd/TiO2, Pd/ZSM-5 and Pd/SiO2 catalysts with regard to the activity under the conditions examined. The catalysts were characterized by means of XRD and TPR. The position of the H2-TPR peak shifts to lower temperature with increasing Pd loading from 0.25 to 2.0%. CeO2 inhibits the hydrogen reduction of PdO. CO-TPR measurements have shown the existence of three peaks. The low-temperature peak (α) is due to the Pd hydroxide species. The β peak has been attributed to finely dispersed PdO. The high-temperature peak (γ) has been attributed to crystal phase PdO. Crystal phase PdO is more difficult to reduce by CO than finely dispersed PdO. On the basis of the catalytic activity and CO-TPR results, we conclude α species (Pd hydroxide) mainly contribute to the catalytic activity for low-temperature CO oxidation.
Self-assembly of a Highly Stable and Active Co3O4/H-TiO2 Bulk Heterojunction with High-Energy Interfacial Structures for Low Temperature CO Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Development of transition metal oxide catalysts with a tunable structure is extremely important for energy, chemical and environmental processes. Herein, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a highly stable and active Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction with high-energy interfacial structures through two-step hydrothermal-crystallization for efficient low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. By selectively etching, an anatase TiO2 support exposing the high-index (112) facet was first created. The high-index (112) facet with high surface energy can endow the bulk TiO2 support with unique physical and chemical properties so as to act as a foundation to construct a robust high-energy interfacial bulk heterojunction. Because of the presence of Ti–O–Co species at the high-energy interface, the prepared Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction possessed much more catalytic active sites compared to Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on conventional TiO2 supports and exhibited a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 3.56 × 10−3 s−1 at 120 °C, which was very competitive compared to those of reported cobalt-based catalysts and 1000 times higher than that of commercial Co3O4. Importantly, due to the strong interactions between Co3O4 and the TiO2 bulk support exposed high-index facet, more attractive water-resisting properties for low temperature CO oxidation can be achieved in the presence of steam (∼2%) compared to previously reported catalysts. The results show promising opportunities for tailoring catalytic behaviors beyond a facile and rational design with a controllable metal–support interface.
In-situ Formed Stable Pt Nanoclusters on Ceria-Zirconia Solid Solutions Induced by Hydrothermal Aging for Efficient Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:Pt nanoclusters (Pt-C) on the surface of ceria-zirconia solid solutions exhibit superior low-temperature CO oxidation activity compared to Pt single atoms (Pt-1). However, the redispersion behavior of the Pt-C to Pt-1 lowers the efficiency of CO Oxidation. In this work, the stable surface hydroxyl groups were constructed by high-temperature hydrothermal aging treatment. Specifically, the Pt-1 catalyst (Pt/CZOe-SA) prepared by atom trapping was subjected to high-temperature hydrothermal treatment to obtain the stable Pt-C catalyst (Pt/CZOe-HT) with in-situ formed Pt-C. The experimental results showed that Pt-C with 2-3 nm size could achieve excellent low-temperature activity and thermal stability. In addition, the ab initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations revealed the specific evolution process of dynamic dispersion for Pt-C with or without hydroxyl groups from the femtosecond scale, suggesting that the hydroxyl groups limited the dispersion of Pt-C in the form of "energy fence". The hydrothermal treatment not only introduced high-temperature stable hydroxyl groups to improve the stability of the in-situ formed Pt-C, but also optimized the ratio of Pt-1 and Pt-C, and then enhanced the low-temperature activity by the synergistic effect between Pt-1 and Pt-C. The present work can provide theoretical guidance for developing high-performance and high-stability Pt-based catalysts.
Crystal Facet Induced Single-Atom Pd/CoxOyon a Tunable Metal-Support Interface for Low Temperature Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.

Abstract:CeO2-supported noble metal clusters are attractive catalytic materials for several applications. However, atomic dispersion under oxidizing reaction conditions often leads to catalyst deactivation. In this study, the noble metal cluster formation threshold is rationally adjusted by using a mixed CeO2-Al2O3 support. The preferential location of Pd on CeO2 islands leads to a high local surface noble metal concentration and promotes the in situ formation of small Pd clusters at a rather low noble metal loading (0.5 wt.%), which are shown to be the active species for CO conversion at these low temperatures. As elucidated by complementary in situ/operando techniques, the spatial separation of CeO2 islands on Al2O3 confines the mobility of Pd, preventing the full redispersion or the formation of larger noble metal particles and maintaining a high CO oxidation activity at low temperatures. In a broader perspective, this approach to more efficiently use the noble metal can be transferred to further systems and reactions in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Due to the capacity to offer abundant catalytic sites within porous solids featuring high surface areas, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have garnered considerable attention as prospective catalysts in environmental catalysis. To promote the industrial application of MOFs, there is an urgent need for an effective and environmental-friendly preparation approach. Breaking through the limitation of the traditional two-step preparation method that Pd was introduced to the already prepared Ce-BTC (Pd/Ce-BTC, BTC = 1, 3, 5 benzenetricarboxylate), in this work, we present a novel one-pot solvothermal method for synthesizing the Pd material supported by Ce-BTC (Pd@Ce-BTC). After pyrolysis in N 2 flow or air flow, Pd-CeO 2 catalysts derived from Pd@Ce-BTC exhibited much higher CO oxidation activity than those from Pd/Ce-BTC. Moreover, Pd/Ce-BTC and Pd@Ce-BTC pyrolyzed in N 2 flow (Pd/Ce-BTC-N and Pd@Ce-BTC-N) could better catalyze the oxidation of CO than Pd/Ce-BTC and Pd@Ce-BTC pyrolyzed in air flow (Pd/Ce-BTC-A and Pd@Ce-BTC-A). Further characterizations revealed that the abundant surface Ce 3+ species, rich surface adsorbed oxygen species and superior redox properties were the main reasons for the superior CO oxidation activity of Pd@Ce-BTC-N.

Abstract:An in-situ assembly method was successfully constructed to encapsulate Pd clusters within CeMOF matrix. This method involved the protection of nanoclusters with PVP and the assembly of CeMOF around Pd nanoclusters under mild condition. The small size and high dispersion resulting from physical confinement effect were inherited in the derivates as CeO2 nanosheets confining Pd nanoclusters catalysts. The relative position of Pd and Ce was regulated via varying pyrolysis parameter, which determined the confinement state of Pd clusters. A critical state was found where Pd clusters were maintained at high dispersion and possessed unlimited accessibility for CO. The specific confining structure and low surface concentration depressed the oxygen supply, resulting in the formation of substoichiometric PdOx, which interacted with CeO2 and formed Pd–Ce–O(s) clusters. With the improved dispersion and high content of Pd–Ce–O(s) clusters, the catalyst converted 100% CO at 63 °C with a Pd loading of 1.07%. The reaction followed Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, in which CO adsorbed on Pd–Ce–O(s) clusters and reacted with the highly active oxygen species.

Abstract:Developing efficient supported Pd catalysts and understanding their catalytic mechanism in CO oxidation are challenging research topics in recent years. This paper describes the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles supported on CeO2 nanotubes via an alcohol reduction method. The effect of the support morphology on the catalytic reaction was explored. Subsequently, the performance of the prepared catalysts was investigated toward CO oxidation reaction and characterized by Nitrogen sorption, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and CO-temperature-programmed desorption techniques. The results indicated that the catalyst of Pd on CeO2 nanotubes exhibits excellent activity in CO oxidation at low temperatures, due to its large surface area, the high dispersion of Pd species, the mesoporous and tubular structure of the CeO2-nanotube support, the abundant Ce3+, formation of Pd–O–Ce bonding, and enhanced metal–support interaction on the catalyst surface.
Structure-activity relationship of Pt catalyst on engineered ceria-alumina support for CO oxidation

Abstract:In heterogeneous catalysis, the promotion of low temperature activity and enhancement of thermal stability simultaneously especially for precious metal catalysts is always highly demanded but very challenging. Herein we report a novel Pt catalyst on ceria-alumina (CeO2/Al2O3) support (Pt/CA-T) engineered by a two-step ceria deposition strategy, exhibiting superior thermal stability and low-temperature carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation activity after activation. Pt single sites anchored to engineered CeO2 edge sites are much more stable than that to CeO2 (111) surface, and such stable single sites can be transformed into highly active Pt clusters for efficient low-temperature CO oxidation. Active site identification indicates that the CO oxidation activity of different Pt sites follows such sequence: Pt cluster step sites ≈ Pt cluster terrace sites > Pt cluster corner sites ≫ Pt single sites on CeO2. The excellent low temperature activity of activated Pt/CA-T catalyst for CO oxidation is associated with its abundant Pt cluster step and terrace sites as well as rich Pt-CeO2 interfaces, which facilitate the adsorption of active CO species and superior oxygen activation/transfer ability. The present study provides new insights into the structure–activity relationship of Pt-CeO2-Al2O3 catalyst, which can also guide the preparation of other highly robust supported catalysts for important industrial applications.

Abstract:A series of Cu-doped Ce-based mixed metal oxide catalysts were prepared by the simplest impregnation method for CO oxidation and CO selective reduction of NOx (CO-SCR), respectively. Among them, 10Cu/CeO2 catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity and stability in both reactions. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, XPS, H2-TPR, Raman, O2-TPD and in-situ DRIFTS. The results show that the preferential exposure of the (111) crystal plane of CeO2 is beneficial to the dispersion of Cu species. The introduced Cu enters the surface or lattice of CeO2, exposeing more catalyst active sites, which improves the catalyst reducibility and activity. In addition, the introduction of Cu into Ce-based catalyst also increases the types of active oxygen on the catalyst surface, improves the mobility of oxygen, and thus enhances the activity of the catalyst. The in-situ DRIFTS analysis shows that CO oxidation follows the M − K mechanism with Cu+ as the core species, while CO-SCR follows the E-R mechanism at low temperature (50–150 °C) and the L-H mechanism at high temperature (200–400 °C). These results show that CuCeO2 bifunctional catalyst can simultaneously meet the requirements of CO oxidation and CO-SCR reaction, which is of great significance for environmental governance.

Abstract:To improve fuel efficiency, advanced combustion engines are being designed to minimize the amount of heat wasted in the exhaust. Hence, future generations of catalysts must perform at temperatures that are 100°C lower than current exhaust-treatment catalysts. Achieving low-temperature activity, while surviving the harsh conditions encountered at high engine loads, remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we demonstrate how atomically dispersed ionic platinum (Pt2+) on ceria (CeO2), which is already thermally stable, can be activated via steam treatment (at 750°C) to simultaneously achieve the goals of low-temperature carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation activity while providing outstanding hydrothermal stability. A new type of active site is created on CeO2 in the vicinity of Pt2+, which provides the improved reactivity. These active sites are stable up to 800°C in oxidizing environments.

Abstract:Growing interest in the development of a hydrogen economy means that CO oxidation is increasingly important for upgrading H2-rich fuel gas streams for fuel cells. CeO2-supported catalysts are the most promising candidates for the catalytic oxidation of CO because of their high activity. In the present work, DFT+U calculations were performed to investigate the stability and CO oxidation reactivity of Ptn (n = 1−4) clusters supported on CeO2(111) (Pt/CeO2) and Pt-doped CeO2(111) (Pt/(Pt−Ce)O2) surfaces. The Pt clusters showed similar nucleation behavior on both CeO2 and (Pt−Ce)O2 surfaces. Further, the formation of oxygen vacancies (Ov) was facilitated because of surface charge depletion caused by the dopant Pt. Our DFT results suggest that the interfacial OV plays an important role in the CO oxidation reaction cycle, and the calculated energy barrier for the CO oxidation reaction on the Pt/(Pt−Ce)O2 surface is approximately 0.43 eV lower than that on the surface of the undoped catalyst, suggesting enhanced CO oxidation reactivity. Therefore, the chemical modification of the CeO2 support via doping is an effective strategy for improving the catalytic performance of Pt/CeO2.

Abstract:Development of active and stable catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation has long been regarded as a hot topic. In this contribution, we used CeO 2 with high-density surface pits as support to prepare an active and stable Au/CeO 2 catalyst by an adsorption-deposition method. The obtained 0.05 wt% Au/CeO 2 -TD (where TD represents thermal decomposition) can maintain its activity at 80 °C for more than 20 h or even after calcination at 800 °C for 2 h. The characterization results showed that the high-density surface pits on CeO 2 -TD play a decisive role in the stabilization of Au and enhancement of the redox property. This work may provide a new strategy to improve the stability of supported metal catalysts by a simple and conventional method.

Thermally Stable RuO x –CeO 2 Nanofiber Catalysts for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:With the ever-growing concerns for sustainable energy production and clean air, developing highly efficient catalysts to eliminate exhaust emission pollutants is of vital importance. In this work, we report a class of thermally stable RuOx–CeO2 nanofiber catalysts derived from a facile one-pot electrospinning method. Ru–CeO2 nanofiber catalysts exhibit outstanding low-temperature activity (∼90% conversion of CO below 150 °C) and long-term durability. The as-prepared Ru–CeO2 nanofiber catalysts show a high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area (>110 m2/g), demonstrating the effectiveness of electrospinning for fabricating high-surface-area catalysts. The Ru–CeO2 nanofiber catalysts have a hollow interior and porous exterior structure, particularly at the Ru–CeO2 nanofiber interfaces, providing plentiful accessible CO and oxygen adsorption sites, which are beneficial for CO catalytic oxidation. H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) was applied to probe the reducibility of the as-synthesized catalysts. The reduced Ru–CeO2 nanofiber catalysts exhibited hydrogen consumption near room temperature. The catalysts were further characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to explore the relationship between the microstructure and extraordinary low-temperature reducibility, as well as the CO oxidation activity. Abstract:In recent years, noble metals atomically dispersed on solid oxide supports have become a frontier of heterogeneous catalysis. In pursuit of an ultimate atom efficiency, the stability of single-atom catalysts is pivotal. Here we compare two Pd/CeO2 single-atom catalysts that are active in low-temperature CO oxidation and display drastically different structural dynamics under the reaction conditions. These catalysts were obtained by conventional impregnation on hydrothermally synthesized CeO2 and one-step flame spray pyrolysis. The oxidized Pd atoms in the impregnated catalyst were prone to reduction and sintering during CO oxidation, whereas they remained intact on the surface of the Pd-doped CeO2 derived by flame spray pyrolysis. A detailed in situ characterization linked the stability of the Pd single atoms to the reducibility of the Pd–CeO2 interface and the extent of reverse oxygen spillover. To understand the chemical phenomena that underlie the metal–support interactions is crucial to the rational design of stable single-atom catalysts.

Abstract:The effect of exposed facets and oxygen vacancies on the catalytic activity of PdxCe1-xO2-delta nanorods for low-temperature CO oxidation has been investigated based on both experimental and theoretical methods. PdxCe1-xO2-delta nanorods with exposed {100} and {110} facets are more active than those with the {111} facet, and such superior active facets can become selectively accessible by modulating the calcination temperature. Moreover, a post H-2 reduction process further enhances the low temperature activity of PdxCe1-xO2-delta composites with a CO initial conversion temperature as low as 24 degrees C. It is suggested that the enhanced activity by the H-2 reduction process is mostly attributed to the promotion of oxygen vacancy concentration on the exposed facets. This is in reasonable agreement with the theoretical prediction that the CO oxidation proceeds via an oxygen vacancy-mediated Eley-Rideal mechanism on PdxCe1-xO2-delta nanorods. Our work highlights the importance of both exposed facets and oxygen vacancies on low temperature CO oxidation for PdxCe1-xO2-delta nanorod catalysts.
