Abstract:A novel donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) derivative (DASA-IDN) was constructed by introducing phenanthroimidazole (PI), tetraphenylethylene (TPE), triphenylamine (TPA) moieties into the DASAs molecular system. The multi-stimuli response process, photochromic and fluorescence properties of DASA-IDN were investigated. When irradiated with visible light, the color of DASA-IDN solution fade quickly and the fluorescence lighted up rapidly. Heating under darkroom could restore it to the initial state. Moreover, solid film of DASA-IDN have been achieved and utilized for information storage. Remarkably, DASA-IDN exhibited versatile switching behavior in response to acid, base and light, turning it into an efficient multi-stimuli responsive molecule.

Abstract:Nonemissive tetraphenylethene (TPE) 1 and its diphenylated derivative 2 were induced to emit intensely by aggregate formation. Crystalline aggregates of the dyes emitted bluer lights than their amorphous counterparts. The emissions of the TPE dyes could be switched off and on continuously and reversibly by wetting and dewetting with solvent vapors, respectively, manifesting their ability to optically sense volatile organic compounds. The light-emitting diodes fabricated from 1 and 2 were turned on at ∼2.9 and ∼5V and emitted blue lights with maximum luminance of ∼1800 and ∼11000cd∕m2, respectively.
Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer and Aggregation-Induced Emission of BODIPY Derivatives

Abstract:Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives 1 and 2 consisting of donor and acceptor units with dual photoresponses to solvent polarity and luminogen aggregation are developed through taking advantage of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and aggregation-induced emission (ATE) processes. In nonpolar solvents, the locally excited (LE) states of the BODIPY luminogens emit intense green lights. Increasing solvent polarity brings the luminogens from the LE state to the TICT state, causing a large bathochromic shift in the emission color but a dramatic decrease in the emission efficiency. The red emission is greatly boosted by aggregate formation or ATE effect: addition of large amounts of water into the solutions of 1 and 2 in the polar solvents causes the luminogens to aggregate supramolecularly and to emit efficiently. The emission can be enhanced by increasing solvent viscosity and decreasing solution temperature, indicating that the ATE effect is caused by the restriction of the intramolecular rotations in the aggregates of the luminogens.

Abstract:Luminescent molecules with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property or AIE-active luminogens (AIE-gens) are typical stimuli-responsive materials. Many AIE-gens have shown luminescent responses to mechano-, thermo-, electro-, vapo-, and/or solvato-stimulus, but the detailed structure-property relationship has been addressed for only a few of them. Here, we report a tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative with pyridyl modifiers and ethynylene bridges. The (Z)- and (E)-isomers are clearly purified, and both of them are AIE-active and demonstrate multiple luminescent responses to external stimuli. Distinct from other reported TPE derivatives, the two isomers show negative solvatochromism due to the large dipole in the ground electronic state. By correlating with the single crystal structures, the subtle differences in quantum efficiency and emission peak wavelength of the solids of the (Z)- and (E)-isomers are rationally explained. Moreover, the ground powder of the (E)-isomer can recover its emission color from green to blue in the air at room temperature but the (Z)-isomer cannot. This difference is interpreted by a mechanism of water-triggered conformational variation, which depends on the hydrogen bond formation between pyridyl moieties and water molecules in the air. In addition to the reversible emission color changes by cyclic grinding-fuming treatments, both of the isomers exhibit a reversible luminescent response to acid-base treatments by switching the emission color between green (basic) and yellow (acid), owing to the incorporation of pyridyl units into the molecule. The unprecedented multiple stimuli-responsive behaviors and clear mechanism explanations allow this kind of AIE-gens to be promising smart materials.
Effects of Substitution with Donor–Acceptor Groups on the Properties of Tetraphenylethene Trimer: Aggregation-Induced Emission, Solvatochromism, and Mechanochromism

Abstract:Luminescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (ME) property have attracted considerable interests for their promising applications in light-emitting and display devices and fluorescent probes for chemo- and biosensors. Tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives are the most attractive species for their notable AIE performance, facile synthesis, and flexible structure modification. To study the effects of donor and acceptor substitutions and extend the applications of TPE-based materials, three TPE kindred, TTPE, BTPEFN, and BATPEFN, are employed. TTPE film displays efficient green fluorescence (lambda(em), = 494 nm, Phi(F) = 100%), evident AIE characteristic (alpha(AIE) 154), and reversible mechanochromism by grinding-fuming: from blue (lambda(em), = 472 nm) to green emission (lambda(em) = 505 nm). Replacing two phenyls by two cyano (A) groups on the central TPE moiety derives BTPEFN, whose film shows efficient orange fluorescence (lambda(em) = 575 nm, Phi(F) = 100%) and evident ATE (alpha(AIE) = 13). The mechanochromic behavior of BTPEFN (from yellow to orange emission, lambda(em) from 541 to 563 nm) is reversible by repeating both the grinding-fuming and grinding-annealing processes. The cyano groups bestow BTPEFN with evident intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) property, the emission color can be tuned from green to red-orange by changing solvent from hexane to THF, while the emission of TTPE shows much less response to solvent polarity. Cyanos also endow BTPEFN with better self-assemble ability in proper conditions, and the obtained regular microribbons emit bright green fluorescence. Further decoration of BTPEFN with N,N-diethyamino (D) groups results in BATPEFN. Due to the cooperative effects of D and A groups, BATPEFN shows dramatic red-shifted fluorescence (lambda(em) = 713 nm), evident ICT process, and enhanced solvatochromism (from red to infrared).
A Twisting Donor‐Acceptor Molecule with an Intercrossed Excited State for Highly Efficient, Deep‐Blue Electroluminescence

Abstract:In an organic electroluminescent (EL) device, the recombination of injected holes and electrons produces what appears to be an ion‐pair or charge‐transfer (CT) exciton, and this CT exciton decays to produce one photon directly, or relaxes to a low‐lying local exciton (LE). Thus the full utilization of both the energy of the CT exciton and the LE should be a pathway for obtaining high‐efficiency EL. Here, a twisting donor‐acceptor (D‐A) triphenylamine‐imidazol molecule, TPA‐PPI, is reported: its synthesis, photophysics, and EL performance. Prepared by a manageable, one‐pot cyclizing reaction, TPA‐PPI exhibits deep‐blue emission with high quantum yields (90%) both in solution and in the solid state. Fluorescent solvatochromic experiments for TPA‐PPI solutions show a red‐shift of 57 nm (3032 cm−1) from low‐polarity hexane (406 nm) to high‐polarity acetonitrile (463 nm), accompanied by the gradual disappearance of the vibrational band in the spectra with increased solvent polarity. The photophysical investigation and DFT analysis suggest an intercrossed CT and LE excited state of the TPA‐PPI, originating from its twisting D‐A configuration. This is a rare instance that a CT‐state material shows highly efficient deep‐blue emission. EL characterization demonstrates that, as a deep‐blue emitter with CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.11), the performance of a TPA‐PPI‐based device is rather excellent, displaying a maximum current efficiency of >5.0 cd A−1, and a maximum external quantum efficiency of >5.0%, corresponding to a maximum internal quantum efficiency of >25%. The effective utilization of the excitation energy arising from materials with intercrossed‐excited‐state (LE and CT) characters is thought to be beneficial for the improved efficiency of EL devices.

Abstract:A reversible dual-responsive luminescent material was introduced by our group to show the simultaneous color and lifetime switching in response to external stimuli. Pristine crystalline powder of (E)-2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(pyren-1-yl)acrylonitrile (Py-BZTCN) shows the ordered pi-pi stacking with only near-monomer-normal orange-yellow fluorescence, but it exhibits red emission with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) after grinding, which can be reversibly recovered by heating or fuming treatment. Grinding disturbs the ordered pi-pi stacking of pristine powder, leading to the formation of small aggregates with compressed distance and increased overlap of pi-pi stacking between adjacent molecules. The cause of switching was verified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments of two corresponding crystals. This strong ir ir interaction effectively promotes the excited-state energy splitting and substantially decreases the singlet-triplet energy gap (Delta E-ST) of aggregates, resulting in the red TADF emission of aggregates through reverse intersystem crossing. This finding proposes a new route to realizing the TADF emission of aggregates through strong intermolecular interactions based on non-TADF monomer, thereby enabling a novel high-contrast dual-responsive luminescence switching. Aggregation-Induced Emission and White Luminescence from a Combination of π-Conjugated Donor–Acceptor Organic Luminogens

Abstract:Two new star-shaped phenyl- and triazine-core based donor-acceptor (D-A) type conjugated molecules bearing triphenylamine end-capped arms were synthesized and characterized as imminent organic optoelectronic materials. Photophysical properties of the compounds were explored systematically via spectroscopic and theoretical methods. Because of the presence of donor-acceptor interactions, these luminogens display multifunctional properties, for instance, high extinction coefficient, large stokes shift, and pronounced solvatochromic effect. The compounds also exhibited phenomenon known as aggregation-induced emission on formation of nano-aggregates in the tetrahydrofuran-water mixture. The aggregate formation was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering analyses. Moreover, by controlling the electron withdrawing ability of the acceptor, complementary emissive fluorophores (blue and yellow) were achieved. These two complementary colors together span the entire range of visible spectrum (400-800 nm) and therefore when mixed in a requisite proportion generate white light in solution phase. These findings have potential for the progress of new organic white light radiating materials for applications in lighting and display devices.

Abstract:Donor‐Acceptor Stenhouse Adduct (DASA), a class of push‐pull negative photochromes, has received large interest lately owing to its versatile synthesis, modularity and excellent photoswitching in solutions. From a technological perspective, it is imperative for this class of photoswitches to work robustly in solid state, e.g. thin films. We feature a molecular framework for the optimized design of DASAs by introducing a new thioindoline donor (D3) and assessing its performance against known 2nd generation indoline‐based donors. The systematic structure‐function investigations suggest that to achieve robust reversible photoswitching, a ground state with low charge separation is desired. DASAs with stronger electron donors and a larger charge separation in the ground state result in a low population of the photothermalstationary state (PTSS) and reduced photostability. The DASA with thioindoline donor (D3A3) seems to be a special case among the donor series as it causes a red shift (ca. 15 nm), however with less polarization of the ground state and marginally better photostability as compared to the unsubstituted 2‐methyl indoline (D1A3). We also emphasize the consideration of the key additional factors that can modulate the red‐light photoswitching properties of DASA chromophores in polymer thin films, which might not be dominant in homogenous solution state.

Abstract:Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process wildly exists in lasing molecules who contain electron donors and acceptors. This type of polar molecules has advantage in securing the charge carrier transport balance that is meaningful for achieving electrically pumped organic semiconductor lasers (EPOSLs). Therefore, deeply understanding how the ICT process affects the stimulated emission is helpful to develop efficient organic gain materials for application in EPOSLs. Here, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties of two donor-π-acceptor type aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) luminogens, named 2PB-AC and TPB-AC, were investigated by the steady-state and transient photoluminescence spectroscopy as well as femtosecond transient absorption measurements. The ICT process of polar molecule is sensitive to the distance of adjacent molecule, which induces the properties of spontaneous emission and stimulated emission behaving concentration dependence. With the enhancement of ICT process, the overlap between emission and excited state absorption spectra is enlarged, and the ASE threshold also climes up. As shown, the physical doping or introducing steric groups in molecules can effectively guarantee mirror symmetry between stimulated emission and emission spectra and reduce the ASE threshold, providing a new idea for the design of efficient lasing organic molecules.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a promising mechanism for harvesting triplet excitons in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The donor–acceptor (D–A) design is the most conventional strategy for developing efficient TADF emitters. A subsequently emerged approach, known as the multiple resonance (MR) effect, also employs electron-donating and electron-withdrawing functional groups. Thus, developing TADF materials has traditionally relied on ingenuity in selecting and combining two functional units. Here, we have realized a TADF molecule by utilizing only a carbazole donor moiety. This molecule is an unusual example in the family of TADF materials and offers better insight into the electronic structures in the excited states for luminescent materials.

Abstract:We describe a visible light-driven switchable [2]catenane, composed of a Ru(bpy)3(2+) tethered cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT(4+)) ring that is interlocked mechanically with a macrocyclic polyether consisting of electron-rich 1,5-dioxynaphthalene (DNP) and electron-deficient 4,4'-bipyridinium (BIPY(2+)) units. In the oxidized state, the CBPQT(4+) ring encircles the DNP recognition site as a consequence of favorable donor-acceptor interactions. In the presence of an excess of triethanolamine (TEOA), visible light irradiation reduces the BIPY(2+) units to BIPY((•+)) radical cations under the influence of the photosensitizer Ru(bpy)3(2+), resulting in the movement of the CBPQT(2(•+)) ring from the DNP to the BIPY((•+)) recognition site as a consequence of the formation of the more energetically favorable trisradical complex, BIPY((•+)) ⊂ CBPQT(2(•+)). Upon introducing O2 in the dark, the BIPY((•+)) radical cations are oxidized back to BIPY(2+) dications, leading to the reinstatement of the CBPQT(4+) ring encircled around the DNP recognition site. Employing this strategy of redox control, we have demonstrated a prototypical molecular switch that can be manipulated photochemically and chemically by sequential reduction and oxidation.

Abstract:Three donor (D)-pi-acceptor (pi A) indene-1,3-dionemethylene-1,4-dihydropyridine (IDM-DHP) derivatives with triphenylamine (TPA)/bis(diphenylamino)triphenylamine (BDPA-TPA) end groups were designed and synthesized. These target compounds with highly twisted conformations showed aggregation-induced emission enhancement properties in their THF/water mixtures due to the restriction of intramolecular rotation, and distinct piezofluorochromic (PFC) properties in the solid state. Interestingly, solvent-induced emission changes similar to those resulting from PFC properties can be achieved by a simple dissolution desolvation process in different solvent systems, such as chloroform, THF, and dichloromethane. X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that the transformations between crystalline and amorphous states were responsible for the PFC properties and solvent-induced emission changes. Moreover, these compounds exhibited remarkable and reversible acid/base-induced fluorescence switching properties in both solution and the solid state. The results indicate that the IDM-DHP derivatives with a TPA/BDPA-TPA unit exhibit intriguing multi-stimulus-responsive fluorescent behaviors. The current study will help researchers to design and synthesize more aggregation-induced emission/aggregation-induced emission enhancement-active multifunctional stimulus-responsive fluorescent materials.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Controlling properties of crystalline solids by light remains a challenge because the lack of intrinsic structural flexibility limits the necessary molecular mobility for photoisomerization. In this work, we reported a series of visible‐light‐responsive covalent organic frameworks (COFs) by introducing donor‐acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) with various electron‐withdrawing moieties via a post‐modified strategy. The DASAs‐functionalized COFs exhibit distorted honeycomb layered topology with long‐range periodicity. The DASAs grafted on the skeletons are pointing into the nanopores of COFs, which weakens intermolecular aggregation and ensures sufficient free volume to undergo reversible isomerization between linear and cyclic states. Furthermore, the crystalline and optical properties of COFs as well as the geometrical size and hydrophilicity inside the nanopores were reversibly controlled by alternating visible light irradiation and heat. Finally, methyl violet was used as the cargo molecules to be immobilized into the nanopores of COFs, which showed fast release under controlling of visible light. Abstract:Abstract Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has proven to be a viable strategy to achieve highly efficient room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in bulk by restricting molecular motions. Here, we show that by utilizing triphenylamine (TPA) as an electronic donor that connects to an acceptor via an sp 3 linker, six TPA-based AIE-active RTP luminophores were obtained. Distinct dual phosphorescence bands emitting from largely localized donor and acceptor triplet emitting states could be recorded at lowered temperatures; at room temperature, only a merged RTP band is present. Theoretical investigations reveal that the two temperature-dependent phosphorescence bands both originate from local/global minima from the lowest triplet excited state (T 1 ). The reported molecular construct serves as an intermediary case between a fully conjugated donor-acceptor system and a donor/acceptor binary mix, which may provide important clues on the design and control of high-freedom molecular systems with complex excited-state dynamics.

Abstract:A polystyrene based visible light responsive polymer bearing donor-acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA) pendants is designed and synthesized. Styrene-vinylbenzyl chloride copolymer (PS-co-PCMS) is prepared by free radical polymerization. Then amino-functionalized PS-co-PCMS is obtained by the nucleophilic substitution reaction between the chloromethyl unit and n-butylamine. Finally, the prepared secondary amines of the polymer are reacted with 5-(furan-2-ylmethylene)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione to fully change them into DASA pendants. The final DASA-containing polymer shows a tunable photoswitching property upon irradiation with visible light. A photoinduced contact angle change of water on the spin-coated film of DASA polymer is observed. The DASA polymer film shows excellent photolithographic performance, with well-defined patterns being efficiently photofabricated using a suitable mask.
Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters: sensing and boosting spin-flipping by aggregation

Abstract:Metal-free organic emitters with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics are emerging due to the potential applications in optoelectronic devices, time-resolved luminescence imaging, and solid-phase sensing. Herein, we synthesized two (4-bromobenzoyl)pyridine (BPy)-based donor–acceptor (D–A) compounds with varying donor size and strength: the emitter BPy- p TC with tert -butylcarbazole (TC) as the donor and BPy- p 3C with bulky tricarbazole (3C) as the donor unit. Both BPy- p TC and BPy- p 3C exhibited prominent emission with TADF properties in solution and in the solid phase. The stronger excited-state charge transfer was obtained for BPy- p 3C due to the bulkier donor, leading to a more twisted D–A geometry than that of BPy- p TC. Hence, BPy- p 3C exhibited aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) in a THF/water mixture. Interestingly, the singlet–triplet energy gap (Δ E ST ) was reduced for both compounds in the aggregated state as compared to toluene solution. Consequently, a faster reverse intersystem crossing rate ( k RISC ) was obtained in the aggregated state, facilitating photon upconversion, leading to enhanced delayed fluorescence. Further, the lone-pair electrons of the pyridinyl nitrogen atom were found to be sensitive to acidic protons. Hence, the exposure to acid and base vapors using trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and triethylamine (TEA) led to solid-phase fluorescence switching with fatigue resistance. The current study demonstrates the role of the donor strength and size in tuning Δ E ST in the aggregated state as well as the relevance for fluorescence-based acid–base sensing. Beilstein J. Org. Abstract:Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) are molecular photoswitches that have spurred a decade of interest because of their dynamic photophysical properties, complex photoswitching mechanism, and diverse applications. Despite breakthroughs in modularity for the donor, acceptor, and triene compartments, the backbone heteroatom has remained static due to synthetic challenges. We provide a predictive tool and sought-after strategy to vary the heteroatom, develop a new subclass of DASA photoswitches, and analyze backbone heteroatom effects on photophysical properties. Amino DASA synthesis is enabled by the first aza-Piancatelli rearrangements on pyrrole substrates, imparting an aromaticity-breaking rearrangement that capitalizes on nitrogen’s additional bonding orbital and the inductive properties of sulfonyl groups. Amino DASA structure was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction, the photochromic properties were characterized, and the photoswitch isomerization was investigated. Complimentary to other DASA compartments, this study furthers our insight into the structure-property relationship of this complex photoswitch and brings DASAs closer to application-specific design.
