Abstract:Artificial Z-scheme system inspired by the natural photosynthesis in green plants has attracted extensive attention owing to its advantages such as simultaneously wide range light absorption, highly efficient charge separation and strong redox ability. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a novel all-solidstate direct Z-scheme photocatalyst of Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 by depositing Ag3PO4 nanoparticles (NPs) on CeO2/TiO2 hierarchical branched nanowires (BNWs), where the CeO2/TiO2 BNWs act as a novel substrate for the well dispersed nano-size Ag3PO4. The Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 photocatalyst exhibits excellent ability of photocatalytic oxygen evolution from pure water splitting. It is suggested that the Z-scheme charge transfer route between CeO2/TiO2 and Ag3PO4 improves the redox ability. On the other hand, the cascade energy level alignment in CeO2/TiO2 BNWs expedites the spatial charge separation, and hence suppresses photocatalytic backward reaction. However, it is difficult to realize a perfect excitation balance in Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 and the composite still surfers photo-corrosion in photocatalysis reaction. Nevertheless, our results provide an innovative strategy of constructing a Z-scheme system from a type-II heterostructure and a highly efficient oxygen evolution catalyst. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Engineering interfacial band bending over bismuth vanadate/carbon nitride by work function regulation for efficient solar-driven water splitting

Abstract:Nature-inspired artificial Z-scheme photocatalyst offers great promise in solar overall water splitting, but its rational design, construction and interfacial charge transfer mechanism remain ambiguous. Here, we design an approach of engineering interfacial band bending via work function regulation, which realizes directional charge transfer at interface and affords direct Z-scheme pathway. Taking BiVO4 as prototype, its oxygen vacancy concentration is reduced by slowing down the crystallization rate, thereby changing the work function from smaller to larger than that of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN). Consequently, the photoinduced charge transfer pathway of BiVO4/PCN is switched from type-II to Z-scheme as evidenced by synchronous illuminated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Specifically, the direct Z-scheme BiVO4/PCN shows superior photocatalytic performance in water splitting. This work provides deep insights and guidelines to constructing heterojunction photocatalysts for solar utilization.

Abstract:The rate determining step of Z-scheme overall water splitting system is usually considered to be the charge carriers’ separation and transfer, which occurs between the hydrogen evolution photocatalyst (HEP) and the oxygen evolution photocatalyst (OEP). In this work, g-C3N4/ITO/Co-BiVO4 Z-scheme composite in which g-C3N4 as HEP, Co doped BiVO4 as OEP and ITO nanoparticles as conductive mediator is designed and fabricated. Without using any sacrificial agents, the g-C3N4/ITO/Co-BiVO4 composite exhibits 4 times higher than the g-C3N4/Co-BiVO4, with the H2 and O2 evolution rate of 95.41 and 40.23 μmol g−1h−1 under full arc irradiation. The increase in photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the efficient carriers’ separation and transport induced by solid-state mediator ITO nanoparticles. In this work, a novel insight into rationally constructing effective all-solid-state Z-scheme system for overall water splitting will be given.

Abstract:Linear conjugated polymers have potential as photocatalysts for hydrogen production from water but so far, most studies have involved non-scalable sacrificial reagents. Z-schemes comprising more than one semiconductor are a potential solution, but it is challenging to design these systems because multiple components must work together synergistically. Here, we show that a conjugated polymer photocatalyst for proton reduction can be coupled in a Z-scheme with an inorganic water oxidation photocatalyst to promote overall water splitting without any sacrificial reagents. First, a promising combination of an organic catalyst, an inorganic catalyst, and a redox mediator was identified by using high-throughput screening of a library of components. A Z-scheme system composed of P10 (homopolymer of dibenzo[ b , d ]thiophene sulfone)-Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ -BiVO 4 was then constructed for overall water splitting under visible light irradiation. Transient absorption spectroscopy was used to assign timescales to the various steps in the photocatalytic process. While the overall solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of this first example is low, it provides proof of concept for other hybrid organic-inorganic Z-scheme architectures in the future.

Abstract:Two-dimensional ternary compounds bismuth oxyhalides (BiOxBry) with suitable band gap and high surface bulk ratio have great potentials for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Although intensive efforts were devoted to the design of well-defined nanostructures to optimize the photoreactivity, it remains a great challenge to improve the light absorption capacity and charge carrier transfer of the materials. In this work, we developed a controllable synthesis route to prepare core-shell structured Bi/BiOBr complexes with abundant conduction channels and active edges as photoelectrodes. The structure and morphology of the Bi/BiOBr complexes could be modulated by tuning the thickness of Bi thin film and/or the oxygen gas flow during the annealing process. Photoelectrochemical analyses indicated that the photocurrent density of the Bi/BiOBr electrodes reached up to 0.36 mA cm(-2). at -0.4 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in acid environments, which was 1 order large than that based on pure BiOBr thin film electrodes (0.08 mA cm(-2)). Our study demonstrates that the controllable synthesis of Bi/BiOBr core-shell structures may open a new way for engineering 2D layered ternary compounds materials to develop novel catalyst devices.
Zinc-Doped G-C3n4/Bivo4 As A Z-Scheme Photocatalyst System For Water Splitting Under Visible Light

Abstract:A two-step photocatalytic water splitting system, termed a Z-scheme system, was achieved using Zn-doped g-C3N4 for H-2 evolution and BiVO4 for O-2 evolution with Fe2+/Fe3+ as a shuttle redox mediator. H-2 and O-2 were evaluated simultaneously when the doping amount of zinc was 10%. Moreover, Zn-doped (10%) g-C3N4 synthesized by an impregnation method showed superior active ability to form the Z-scheme with BiVO4 than by in-situ synthesis. X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the samples. It was determined that more Zn-N bonds could be formed on the surface of g-C3N4 by impregnation, which could facilitate charge transfer. Abstract:Artificial Z-scheme systems that mimic natural photosynthesis are well applicable to photocatalytic overall water splitting for hydrogen (H-2) production free of electricity. However, it commonly confronts low efficiency with huge challenge of steering charge transfer between H-2 evolution photocatalyst (HEP) and oxygen evolution photocatalyst (OEP). Here we report an all-solid-state Z-scheme system with facet-selective construction that favors charge spatial separation toward HEP and OEP for high efficient solar overall water splitting. Based on the spontaneous separation of photogenerated electrons and holes on the different crystal facets of BiVO4 decahedra, we successively implemented the selective depositions of Au and CdS nanoparticles (NPs) onto the electron-rich {010} facets, to fortify the Z-scheme charge transfer between BiVO4 and CdS across Au mediators upon two-step photoexcitation. In-situ photoelectron dynamics ascertains Z-scheme model of resultant BiVO4/Au/CdS, which enables an impressive overall water splitting with stoichiometric H-2 and O-2 evolution rates of 281 and 138 mu mol g(-1)h(-1), respectively, under 1 sun irradiation (100 mW cm(-2 ), AM 1.5G) without using any sacrificial agents and external bias. This work not only presents a refined Z-scheme overall water splitting system, but also gains insights into photo-induced charge transfer dynamics. (C) 2020 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. An Efficient Photocatalyst with Pt/TiO2@CdS/Co3O4 Hollow Core–Shell Nanostructure for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Photocatalytic split water attracts tremendous research interest because of its outstanding advantages in generating clean energy. Therefore, this work reports the synthesis of Pt/TiO 2 @CdS/Co 3 O 4 hollow core–shell nanocomposites using a hard template method. The resulting material was then used for photo-induced spontaneous water splitting. The rationally designed hollow core–shell structure of this material not only enhanced the light collection capacity but also improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers owing to its TiO 2 /CdS heterojunction. The presence of the Pt and Co 3 O 4 catalysts in our novel material resulted in 63.2 and 29.7 μ mol/g of H 2 and O 2 yields, respectively. Our work provides insights into conversion efficiency improvements during visible light-assisted catalytic water splitting.

Integrated Z‐Scheme Nanosystem Based on Metal Sulfide Nanorods for Efficient Photocatalytic Pure Water Splitting

Abstract:Developing efficient metal sulfides for pure water splitting is a challenging topic in the field of photocatalysis. Herein, inspired by natural photosynthesis, an all‐solid‐state Z‐scheme photocatalyst was constructed with Cd0.9Zn0.1S (CZS) for water reduction, red phosphorus (RP) for water oxidation, and metallic CoP as the electron mediator. RP@CoP core‐shell nanostructures were uniformly attached on the CZS nanorods, which gave rise to multiple monodispersed nanojunctions. The integrated Z‐scheme nanosystem exhibited an apparent quantum efficiency of 6.4 % at 420 nm for pure water splitting. Theoretical analysis and femtosecond transient absorption results revealed that the impressive performance was mainly due to efficient hole transfer of CZS, resulting from the intimate atomic contacts between CoP mediator and photocatalysts, together with favorable band alignment. Meanwhile, the multiple monodispersed Z‐scheme nanojunctions could provide abundant reaction sites, which was also important for the boosted activity.

Abstract:Abstract Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) has been widely investigated as a photocatalyst or photoanode for solar water splitting, but its activity is hindered by inefficient cocatalysts and limited understanding of the underlying mechanism. Here we demonstrate significantly enhanced water oxidation on the particulate BiVO 4 photocatalyst via in situ facet-selective photodeposition of dual-cocatalysts that exist separately as metallic Ir nanoparticles and nanocomposite of FeOOH and CoOOH (denoted as FeCoO x ), as revealed by advanced techniques. The mechanism of water oxidation promoted by the dual-cocatalysts is experimentally and theoretically unraveled, and mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of the spatially separated dual-cocatalysts (Ir, FeCoO x ) on both interface charge separation and surface catalysis. Combined with the H 2 -evolving photocatalysts, we finally construct a Z-scheme overall water splitting system using [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3−/4− as the redox mediator, whose apparent quantum efficiency at 420 nm and solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency are optimized to be 12.3% and 0.6%, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract So-called Z-scheme systems permit overall water splitting using narrow-bandgap photocatalysts. To boost the performance of such systems, it is necessary to enhance the intrinsic activities of the hydrogen evolution photocatalyst and oxygen evolution photocatalyst, promote electron transfer from the oxygen evolution photocatalyst to the hydrogen evolution photocatalyst, and suppress back reactions. The present work develop a high-performance oxysulfide photocatalyst, Sm 2 Ti 2 O 5 S 2 , as an hydrogen evolution photocatalyst for use in a Z-scheme overall water splitting system in combination with BiVO 4 as the oxygen evolution photocatalyst and reduced graphene oxide as the solid-state electron mediator. After surface modifications of the photocatalysts to promote charge separation and redox reactions, this system is able to split water into hydrogen and oxygen for more than 100 hours with a solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of 0.22%. In contrast to many existing photocatalytic systems, the water splitting activity of the present system is only minimally reduced by increasing the background pressure to 90 kPa. These results suggest characteristics suitable for applications under practical operating conditions.

Abstract:Enhancing the photocatalytic activity and suppressing the photocorrosion of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) remain great challenges. Herein, we established a novel heterostructured photocatalyst by stacking Zr2CO2 on a WSe2 monolayer with properties promising to promote the separation of photogenerated carriers and prevent photocorrosion existing in TMDCs. On the basis of first-principles calculations, the Zr2CO2/ WSe2 system exhibits a direct Z-scheme band alignment with a suitable indirect bandgap of 1.35 eV. The Zr2CO2/ WSe2 heterostructure has a low binding energy and high carrier mobilities, which highly benefits the separation and transportation of photogenerated carriers. Concomitantly, the synergistic effect of Zr2CO2 and WSe2 pro-motes the anti-photocorrosion ability of WSe2 monolayer and visible light optical responses of one separate material. Moreover, the Gibbs free energy shifts to negative values and continuously decreases during the process of water splitting into oxygen without additional overpotential under neural conditions, satisfying the thermo-dynamic requirements for water splitting. The solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of the Zr2CO2/WSe2 is calculated to be 15.57%. These findings shed new insight into the development of the visible-light response Z -scheme system for the high performance and stability of heterostructured photocatalysts.
Elegant Construction of ZnIn2S4/BiVO4 Hierarchical Heterostructures As Direct Z-Scheme Photocatalysts for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:The ZnIn2S4/BiVO4 heterostructures were elegantly designed through assembling ZnIn2S4 nanosheets onto the surface of BiVO4 decahedrons. This composite photocatalyst exhibits efficient photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into CO with a detectable amount of CH4 in the presence of water vapor. An electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR) technique and density function theory (DFT) calculation affirm the direct Z-scheme structure in ZnIn2S4/BiVO4. The larger surface photovoltage (SPV) change and the longer liquid photoluminescence (PL) lifetime of the heterostructure, compared to the individual ZnIn2S4 and BiVO4 components, demonstrate that the Z-scheme structure can effectively promote the recombination of the photogenerated holes in the valence band (VB) of the ZnIn2S4 nanosheet with the electrons in the conduction band (CB) of the decahedral BiVO4 and lead to the abundant electrons surviving in the CB of ZnIn2S4 and holes in the VB of BiVO4, thus enhancing photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. This study may make a potential contribution to the rational construction and deep understanding of the underlying mechanism of direct Z-schemes for advanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Spontaneously photocatalytic water splitting to generate H2 and O2 represents a promising strategy for converting solar energy to chemical energy. However, photocatalytic water splitting without sacrificial agents is difficult due to the poor bulk charge separation and retarded surface reaction kinetics. Herein, we first combined the p–type Co3O4 cocatalysts with n–type core–shell heterojunction to create a Co3O4–decorated p–n junction by using bimetallic ZnCo–MOFs as template. In this hybrid, both the heterojunction and p–n junction can accelerate the bulk charge separation, while the highly dispersed Co3O4 cocatalysts can enhance the surface reaction kinetics. As a result, the outstanding H2 and O2 production rates of 3853 and 1927 μmol g−1 h−1 were obtained for the optimal sample, approximately 1750, 550 and 110 times higher than those of ZnO, and ZnO/Co3O4. Such synergistic enhancement can be evidenced by charge separation efficiency calculation. XAFS, XPS and DFT calculation indicated that the electrons and holes can be effectively assembled on ZnO and Co3O4, respectively. This work provides a new strategy for combining the advantages of cocatalyst and p–n junction as well as the core–shell heterojunction to enhance the photocatalytic water splitting without sacrificial agent.

Abstract:The self-assembly core-shell BixY1-xVO4@g-C3N4 (BYVO@PCN) photocatalyst was synthesized by in-situ polycondensation of melamine on the surface of BixY1-xVO4. The formation mechanism of the core-shell structure was mainly attributed to the excessive unpaired O atoms existed on the surface of BYVO, which could absorb the intermediate products of polycondensation. In addition, the core-shell BYVO@PCN can achieve photocatalytic pure water splitting into H2 and O2 which is about 5 times higher than the BixY1-xVO4. Compared with PCN, BYVO@PCN tackles the problem that little O2 evolution in pure water splitting by PCN. Furthermore, BYVO@PCN forms an S-scheme heterojunction instead of a type Ⅱ heterojunction, which significantly accelerates the separation of charge carriers.
Rational Design of Nanostructured BiVO4/FeOx Photoanode Coupling with 2D Co(OH)2 Cocatalyst for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Efficient charge transport and separation is of prime significance to achieve high efficiency of photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar energy conversion. In this study, we designed a novel ternary nanostructured BiVO4/ FeOx/Co(OH)2 composite as photoelectrode for enhanced PEC water splitting. Compared with pristine BiVO4, the fabricated BiVO4/FeOx/Co(OH)2 photoelectrode produced a doubled increase in photocurrent (from 0.36 to 0.72 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus RHE) with a negative shift of 390 mV in the initial potential (from 0.72 to 0.33 V). In addition, the conversion efficiency and photostability for PEC water oxidation were also improved. The elevated PEC properties of ternary composite photoelectrode were originated from the synergy of heterojunction construction and 2D cocatalyst loading that provides effective pathway for promoting charge separation as well as sufficient sites for photoelectrochemical reaction. These findings could provide an exemplary PEC model for enhanced solar hydrogen evolution of BiVO4 photoanode.
Bimetallic Pd/Co Embedded in Two-Dimensional Carbon-Nitride for Z-Scheme Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Two-dimensional s-triazine-based graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) material with a band gap of 3.18 eV has emerged as a promising photocatalyst for water splitting. Here, we propose a Z-scheme photocatalyst by embedding Pd(OH)(2)- and Co(OH)(2)-groups in different parts of g-CN simultaneously. Density functional theory calculations show that it extends solar light absorption of g-CN into visible and infrared regions, realizes efficient charge separation, and can catalyze water splitting to produce O-2 and H-2, respectively. The staggered band alignment meets the requirement of the Z-scheme. Importantly, ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the photogenerated hole evolution accords with anticipation for subsequent water-splitting reactions. The computed Gibbs-free energy and overpotentials confirm the feasibility of hydrogen evolution reactions on the Co-centered fragment and oxygen evolution reactions on the Pd-centered fragment, respectively. It is expected that this new Z-scheme model designed on a single material platform may provide an alternative way for achieving efficient photodriven water splitting.
