Abstract:The soluble nature of polysulfide species created on the sulfur electrode has severely hampered the electrochemical performance of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Trapping and anchoring polysulfides are promising approaches for overcoming this issue. In this work, a mechanically robust, electrically conductive hybrid carbon aerogel (HCA) with aligned and interconnected pores was created and investigated as an interlayer for Li–S batteries. The hierarchical cross-linked networks constructed by graphene sheets and carbon nanotubes can act as an “internet” to capture the polysulfide, while the microand nano-pores inside the aerogel can facilitate quick penetration of the electrolyte and rapid transport of lithium ions. As advantages of the unique structure and excellent accommodation of the volume change of the active materials, a high specific capacity of 1,309 mAh·g−1 at 0.2 C was achieved for the assembled Li–S battery, coupled with good rate performance and long-term cycling stability (78% capacity retention after 600 cycles at 4 C).
Hierarchical Porous and Three-Dimensional MXene/SiO2 Hybrid Aerogel through a Sol-Gel Approach for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:A unique porous material, namely, MXene/SiO2 hybrid aerogel, with a high surface area, was prepared via sol-gel and freeze-drying methods. The hierarchical porous hybrid aerogel possesses a three-dimensional integrated network structure of SiO2 cross-link with two-dimensional MXene; it is used not only as a scaffold to prepare sulfur-based cathode material, but also as an efficient functional separator to block the polysulfides shuttle. MXene/SiO2 hybrid aerogel as sulfur carrier exhibits good electrochemical performance, such as high discharge capacities (1007 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C) and stable cycling performance (823 mA h g-1 over 200 cycles at 0.5 C). Furthermore, the battery assembled with hybrid aerogel-modified separator remains at 623 mA h g-1 over 200 cycles at 0.5 C based on the conductive porous framework and abundant functional groups in hybrid aerogel. This work might provide further impetus to explore other applications of MXene-based composite aerogel.
Porous Hollow Carbon Aerogel-Assembled Core@Polypyrrole Nanoparticle Shell as an Efficient Sulfur Host through a Tunable Molecular Self-Assembly Method for Rechargeable Lithium/Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are fascinating as next-generation high specific energy density storation devices. Herein, we report the fabrication of a three-dimensional porous hollow structure composed of a carbon aerogel assembled core etched via nano-CaCO3 and a polypyrrole nanoparticle shell as a sulfur scaffold for Li–S batteries. The as-prepared sulfur cathodes exhibit excellent reversible capacity (1031.9 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C), outstanding rate capability (566.5 and 477.2 mAh g–1 at 1 and 2 C, respectively), and superior cycling stability (74.2% capacity retention rate at 1 C). The improved electrochemical performance can be attributed to the extraordinary core–shell structure: the honeycomb-like carbon aerogel core provides fast transportation for the Li+/e–, and even sufficient free space for the volume expansion; the polypyrrole nanoparticle shell acts not only as a physical obstacle but also as a polar material to restrict the shuttling of polysulfides by chemical interaction. These inspiring results specify that such electrodes could empower high performance, fast charging, and flexible Li–S batteries through a tunable molecular self-assembly method to clad strong polar material on carbon materials.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Graphene-sulfur (G-S) hybrid materials with sulfur nanocrystals anchored on interconnected fibrous graphene are obtained by a facile one-pot strategy using a sulfur/carbon disulfide/alcohol mixed solution. The reduction of graphene oxide and the formation/binding of sulfur nanocrystals were integrated. The G-S hybrids exhibit a highly porous network structure constructed by fibrous graphene, many electrically conducting pathways, and easily tunable sulfur content, which can be cut and pressed into pellets to be directly used as lithium-sulfur battery cathodes without using a metal current-collector, binder, and conductive additive. The porous network and sulfur nanocrystals enable rapid ion transport and short Li(+) diffusion distance, the interconnected fibrous graphene provides highly conductive electron transport pathways, and the oxygen-containing (mainly hydroxyl/epoxide) groups show strong binding with polysulfides, preventing their dissolution into the electrolyte based on first-principles calculations. As a result, the G-S hybrids show a high capacity, an excellent high-rate performance, and a long life over 100 cycles. These results demonstrate the great potential of this unique hybrid structure as cathodes for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are one of the promising next-generation energy storage devices for meeting the growing energy demands. However, their commercial application have been hindered by several problems including the insulating nature of sulfur species, the shuttle effect of polysulfides, and the sizeable volumetric change of sulfur cathode upon cycling. Herein, a hierarchical porous carbon aerogel embedded with small-sized TiO2 nanoparticles (HPCA-TO) is prepared with polyacrylic acid grafted Ti3C2 MXene as 2D template and TiO2 source, chitosan as carbon precursor. HPCA-TO is filtrated onto a commercial polypropylene separator as a functional interlayer towards the sulfur cathode. For the HPCA-TO, the small-sized polar TiO2 nanoparticles are beneficial for chemically reserving the soluble polysulfides, while the 2D carbon skeleton enables enhanced electrode conductivity, and the hierarchical porous structure can facilitate the ionic diffusion. As a result, the polysulfide shuttling is efficiently suppressed, and the conversion kinetics of polysulfides is largely enhanced. The Li–S batteries with the modified separators demonstrate a high initial discharge capacity (1439 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C) and excellent rate capability (502 mAh g−1 at 5 C).

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are afflicted with capacity fading on account of polysulfide shuttling. A novel cost-effective electrode that can hinder the polysulfide shuttling and realize high active material utilization is highly required. Here, we demonstrate a flexible, electrically conductive, nanostructured, and asymmetric hybrid cathode by integrating a high-aspect-ratio wood nanocellulose and a low-cost commercial carbon nanotube (∼$ 0.2 g-1) into an entangled aerogel film. The vacuum filtration combined with lyophilization enables the aerogel film with quite different nanofiber/nanotube packing densities and pore structures at its two sides. The cooperative effects of the entangled building blocks and the asymmetric porous structure of the aerogel film stimulate the simultaneous increase of active sulfur loading, enhancing the electrolyte penetration, alleviating dissolution and shuttling of polysulfide ions, and promoting the fast electron transportation. The as-generated cathode exhibited a capacity fading of 0.01% per cycle over 1000 discharge/charge cycles at a 0.5 C rate (1 C = 1675 mA g-1). The average Coulombic efficiency reached ∼99.7%.

Abstract:AbstractRational design of hollow micro‐ and/or nano‐structured cathodes as sulfur hosts has potential for high‐performance lithium‐sulfur batteries. However, their further commercial application is hindered because infusing sulfur into hollow hosts is hard to control and the interactions between high loading sulfur and electrolyte are poor. Herein, we designed hierarchical porous hollow carbon nanospheres with radially inwardly aligned supporting ribs to mitigate these problems. Such a structure could aid the sulfur infusion and maximize sulfur utilization owing to the well‐ordered pore channels. This highly organized internal carbon skeleton can also enhance the electronic conductivity. The hollow carbon nanospheres with further nitrogen‐doping as the sulfur host material exhibit good capacity and excellent cycling performance (0.044 % capacity degradation per each cycle for 1000 cycles).

Abstract:Sulfur has received increasing attention as a cathode material for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity. However, the commercialization of Li-S batteries is limited by the challenges of poor electrical conductivity of sulfur, dissolution of the polysulfide intermediates into the electrolyte, and volume expansion of sulfur during cycling. Herein, we report the fabrication of novel-structured porous carbon microspheres with a controllable multi-modal pore size distribution, i.e., a combination of interconnected micropores, mesopores and macropores. Cathodes made of sulfur infiltrated in such a hierarchical carbon framework provide several advantages: (1) a continuous and high surface area carbon network for enhanced electrical conductivity and high sulfur loading; (2) macropores and large mesopores bridged by small mesopores to provide good electrolyte accessibility and fast Li ion transport and to accommodate volume expansion of sulfur; and (3) small mesopores and micropores to improve carbon/sulfur interaction and to help trap polysulfides. An initial discharge capacity at 1278 mA h g(-1) and capacity retention at 70.7% (904 mA h g(-1)) after 100 cycles at a high rate (1 C) were achieved. The material fabrication process is relatively simple and easily scalable.

Abstract:The ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity and energy density of lithium-sulfur batteries have attracted extensive research, but the main issues including the insulating nature of sulfur, large volumetric expansion during discharging, and shuttle effect of polysulfides still need to be solved. Herein, a hierarchical high-porosity graphene oxide-porous carbon/sulfur (GO-PC/S) composite cathode is designed and fabricated. In this work, sodium chloride was used as temporary space holders to create a hierarchical porous structure for accelerating the transmission of Li+, accommodating the volumetric expansion, and enlarging the specific surface area (342.623m(2)g(-1)) up to eight times. Owing to the abundant oxygen-containing functional groups of GO, sulfur and polysulfides can be effectively immobilized and the conductivity is enhanced by porous carbon. The Li-S battery exhibits outstanding kinetic performance and rate capability (618.3mAhg(-1) at 2C) as well as excellent cycling performance over 300 cycles.

Abstract:High energy Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is built on high-loading and dense sulfur electrodes. Unfortunately, these electrodes usually suffer from low sulfur utilization rate and limited cycle life due to the gap in scientific knowledge between the fundamental research and the application at relevant scales. In this work, effects of electrode porosity on the electrode energy density, cell cycling stability, Li anode interface, and electrolyte/sulfur ratio were investigated based on high loading sulfur electrodes. Using electrodes with sulfur loading of 4 mg cm-2 and thickness at ~60 μm, a high energy density of over 1300 Wh L-1 has been obtained at electrode level, which provides a decent basis for high energy Li-S cell development. In addition, Li-S cells with the high loading and dense electrodes demonstrate promising cycling stability (~80 % capacity retention for 200 cycles). These significant improvements are contributed by the synergistic effects of dense sulfur cathode, improved electrode wetting, and suppressed growth of interphase layer on Li metal anode. This study sheds light on rational design of sulfur cathode for balanced cell energy density and cycling life.
Engineering of Hollow Core–Shell Interlinked Carbon Spheres for Highly Stable Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:We report engineered hollow core-shell interlinked carbon spheres that consist of a mesoporous shell, a hollow void, and an anchored carbon core and are expected to be ideal sulfur hosts for overcoming the shortage of Li-S batteries. The hollow core-shell interlinked carbon spheres were obtained through solution synthesis of polymer spheres followed by a pyrolysis process that occurred in the hermetical silica shell. During the pyrolysis, the polymer sphere was transformed into the carbon core and the carbonaceous volatiles were self-deposited on the silica shell due to the blocking effect of the hermetical silica shell. The gravitational force and the natural driving force of lowering the surface energy tend to interlink the carbon core and carbon/silica shell, resulting in a core-shell interlinked structure. After the SiO2 shell was etched, the mesoporous carbon shell was generated. When used as the sulfur host for Li-S batteries, such a hierarchical structure provides access to Li(+) ingress/egress for reactivity with the sulfur and, meanwhile, can overcome the limitations of low sulfur loading and a severe shuttle effect in solid carbon-supported sulfur cathodes. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy images provide visible evidence that sulfur is well-encapsulated in the hollow void. Importantly, such anchored-core carbon nanostructures can simultaneously serve as a physical buffer and an electronically connecting matrix, which helps to realize the full potential of the active materials. Based on the many merits, carbon-sulfur cathodes show a high utilization of sulfur with a sulfur loading of 70 wt % and exhibit excellent cycling stability (i.e., 960 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.5 C).

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising candidates for high-energy storage devices due to high theoretical capacities of both the sulfur cathode and lithium (Li) metal anode. Considerable efforts have been devoted to improving sulfur cathodes. However, issues associated with Li anodes, such as low Coulombic efficiency (CE) and growth of Li dendrites, remain unsolved due to unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and lead to poor capacity retention and a short cycling life of Li-S batteries. In this work, we demonstrate a facile and effective approach to fabricate a flexible and robust hybrid SEI layer through co-deposition of aromatic-based organosulfides and inorganic Li salts using poly(sulfur-random-1,3-diisopropenylbenzene) as an additive in an electrolyte. The aromatic-based organic components with planar backbone conformation and π-π interaction in the SEI layers can improve the toughness and flexibility to promote stable and high efficient Li deposition/dissolution. The as-formed durable SEI layer can inhibit dendritic Li growth, enhance Li deposition/dissolution CE (99.1% over 420 cycles), and in turn enable Li-S batteries with good cycling stability (1000 cycles) and slow capacity decay. This work demonstrates a route to address the issues associated with Li metal anodes and promote the development of high-energy rechargeable Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur batteries are a promising next‐generation energy storage device owing to their high theoretical capacity and the low cost and abundance of sulfur. However, the low conductivity and loss of active sulfur material during operation greatly limit the rating capabilities and cycling stability of lithium–sulfur batteries. In this work, a unique sulfur host hybrid material comprising nanosized nickel sulfide (NiS) uniformly distributed on 3D carbon hollow spheres (C‐HS) is fabricated using an in situ thermal reduction and sulfidation method. In the hybrid material, the nanosized NiS provides a high adsorption capability for polysulfides and the C‐HS serves as a physical confinement for polysulfides and also a 3D electron transfer pathway. Moreover, NiS has strong chemical coupling with the C‐HS, favoring fast charge transfer and redox kinetics of the sulfur electrode. With a sulfur loading of up to 2.3 mg cm−2, the hybrid material‐based lithium–sulfur batteries offer a capacity decay as low as 0.013% per cycle and a capacity of 695 mA h g−1 at 0.5 C after 300 cycles. This unique 3D hybrid material with strong chemical coupling provides a promising sulfur host for high performance lithium–sulfur batteries.

Abstract:The practical application of high-energy-density lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been highly praised for energy storage devices, while are largely hindered by the "shuttling effect". Herein, core-shell carbon spheres composed of interlinked porous core and lamellar shell were designed to restrain the polysulfide shuttling. The microporous structure with pore size of around 1 nm effectively trap lithium polysulfides. Furthermore, the interconnected porous core shortens the ion transfer distance and the lamellar carbon shell endows the carbon spheres with fast electron conduction, finally facilitating polysulfide conversion kinetics. Therefore, the Li-S batteries with the carbon spheres as the interlayer show high discharge specific capacity of 1002 mAh/g at 2 C with 574 mAh/g remaining after 600 cycles, and high areal capacity of 5.48 mAh/cm 2 with sulfur loading of 4.67 mg/cm 2 at 0.1 C. The corresponding pouch cells also exhibit stable cycling stability with an initial discharge specific capacity of 1082 mAh/g at 0.1 C.

Abstract:Tin-based anode materials, such as tin oxide and tin sulfide, have received increased attention due to their high theoretical capacity, natural abundance, and adequate operating voltage. But the large volume variation and sluggish reaction kinetics lead to severe structural deterioration and capacity fading during the charge-discharge process, hindering their practical application. Herein, we synthesized a unique ternary hybrid structure to grow SnS2 nanosheets and SnO2 particles on graphene aerogels by hydrothermal method (denoted as SnO2/SnS2/SGA). The SnO2/SnS2/SGA exhibited better cycling stability than SnS2/GA and SnO2/GA. The tight adhesion of SnO2/ SnS2 helps to alleviate the undesired electrode materials destruction due to volume expansion. Furthermore, SnO2 and SnS2 quantum dots anchored on graphene aerogels can undergo reversible conversion reaction that profit by synergistic effect. The reversibility of the SnO2/SnS2/SGA material during the transition was also proved by ex-situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The SnO2/SnS2/SGA hybrid was endowed with enhanced electrochemical capability.

Abstract:Despite the outstanding gravimetric performance of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, their practical volumetric energy density is normally lower than that of lithium‐ion batteries, mainly due to the low density of nanostructured sulfur as well as the porous carbon hosts. Here, a novel approach is developed to fabricate high‐density graphene bulk materials with “ink‐bottle‐like” mesopores by phosphoric acid (H3PO4) activation. These pores can effectively confine the polysulfides due to their unique structure with a wide body and narrow neck, which shows only a 0.05% capacity fade per cycle for 500 cycles (75% capacity retention) for accommodating polysulfides. With a density of 1.16 g cm−3, a hybrid cathode containing 54 wt% sulfur delivers a high volumetric capacity of 653 mA h cm−3. As a result, a device‐level volumetric energy density as high as 408 W h L−1 is achieved with a cathode thickness of 100 µm. This is a periodic yet practical advance to improve the volumetric performance of Li–S batteries from a device perspective. This work suggests a design principle for the real use Li–S batteries although there is a long way ahead to bridge the gap between Li–S batteries and Li–ion batteries in volumetric performance.
Carbon/Sulfur Aerogel with Adequate Mesoporous Channels as Robust Polysulfide Confinement Matrix for Highly Stable Lithium–Sulfur Battery

Abstract:The ability to restrict the shuttle of lithium polysulfide (LiPSn) and improve the utilization efficiency of sulfur represents an important endeavor toward practical application of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, we report the crafting of a robust 3D graphene-wrapped, nitrogen-doped, highly mesoporous carbon/sulfur (G-NHMC/S) hierarchical aerogel as an effective polysulfide confinement matrix for a highly stable Li–S battery. Rich polar sites of NHMC firmly anchor LiPSn on the matrix surface. Porous NHMC provides ample space for accommodating sulfur and cushioning its volume expansion. Moreover, graphene wrapped on NHMC/S not only physically hinders the LiPSn shuttle but also interconnects the isolated NHMC/S, thus increasing electron transfer rate. Taken together, triple confinement of G-NHMC/S aerogel synergistically retains the soluble LiPSn and displays a specific capacity of 1322 mAh g–1 and 1000-cycle life. Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is the promising next-generation energy storage device owing to its ultra-high the-oretical energy density and low cost. Unfortunately, its practical performance is significantly hindered by the poor conductivity of sulfur, huge volume change, and soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). To address above issues, single iron (Fe) atoms anchored on hierarchically porous carbon substrate configured by ordered macro -pores and widespread mesopores/micropores (Fe-N-C/OC) are synthesized and acted as carbon hosts for sul-fur cathodes. Single Fe atoms in Fe-N4 moieties serve as active sites to accelerate conversion kinetics of LiPSs due to strong catalytic ability, thereby the shuttle effect being obviously restrained. Meanwhile, the trimodal-porous structure provides continuous carbon framework for enhanced electrical conductivity, ordered macro -porous channels bridged by mesopores for rapid Li+ diffusion, and adequate spaces to reserve sulfur volume oscillation. Consequently, sulfur-loaded Fe-N-C/OC (Fe-N-C/OC/S) cathodes exhibit an impressive specific capacity of 1442 mAh g-1 at 0.1C and maintain the capacity retention of 89.2 % after 300 cycles at 1C. It offers fresh insights for designing efficient sulfur hosts to enhance the performance of Li-S batteries.
Porous Carbon Architecture Assembled by Cross-Linked Carbon Leaves with Implanted Atomic Cobalt for High-Performance Li–S Batteries

Abstract:Abstract The practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries is severely hampered by the poor conductivity, polysulfide shuttle effect and sluggish reaction kinetics of sulfur cathodes. Herein, a hierarchically porous three-dimension (3D) carbon architecture assembled by cross-linked carbon leaves with implanted atomic Co–N 4 has been delicately developed as an advanced sulfur host through a SiO 2 -mediated zeolitic imidazolate framework-L (ZIF-L) strategy. The unique 3D architectures not only provide a highly conductive network for fast electron transfer and buffer the volume change upon lithiation–delithiation process but also endow rich interface with full exposure of Co–N 4 active sites to boost the lithium polysulfides adsorption and conversion. Owing to the accelerated kinetics and suppressed shuttle effect, the as-prepared sulfur cathode exhibits a superior electrochemical performance with a high reversible specific capacity of 695 mAh g −1 at 5 C and a low capacity fading rate of 0.053% per cycle over 500 cycles at 1 C. This work may provide a promising solution for the design of an advanced sulfur-based cathode toward high-performance Li–S batteries.
