Abstract:Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a relatively new family of materials that attract lots of attention thanks to their unique features such as hierarchical porosity, active metal centers, versatility of linkers/metal nodes, and large surface area. Among the extended list of MOFs, Zr‐based‐MOFs demonstrate comparably superior chemical and thermal stabilities, making them ideal candidates for energy and environmental applications. As a Zr‐MOF, NU‐1000 is first synthesized at Northwestern University. A comprehensive review of various approaches to the synthesis of NU‐1000 MOFs for obtaining unique surface properties (e.g., diverse surface morphologies, large surface area, and particular pore size distribution) and their applications in the catalysis (electro‐, and photo‐catalysis), CO 2 reduction, batteries, hydrogen storage, gas storage/separation, and other environmental fields are presented. The review further outlines the current challenges in the development of NU‐1000 MOFs and their derivatives in practical applications, revealing areas for future investigation.

Spies Within Metal-Organic Frameworks: Investigating Metal Centers Using Solid-State Nmr

Abstract:Structural characterization of metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial, since an understanding of the relationship between the macroscopic properties of these industrially relevant materials and their molecular-level structures allows for the development of new applications and improvements in current performance. In many MOFs, the incorporated metal centers dictate the short- and long-range structure and porosity of the material. Here we demonstrate that solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy targeting NMR-active metal centers at natural abundance, in concert with ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray diffraction (XRD), is a powerful tool for elucidating the molecular-level structure of MOFs. Zr-91 SSNMR experiments on MIL-140A are paired with DFT calculations and geometry optimizations in order to detect inaccuracies in the reported powder XRD crystal structure. In-115 and La-139 SSNMR experiments on sets of related MOFs at two different magnetic fields illustrate the sensitivity of the In-115/La-139 electric field gradient tensors to subtle differences in coordination, bond length distribution, and ligand geometry about the metal center. Ti-47/49 SSNMR experiments reflect the presence or absence of guest solvent in MIL-125(Ti), and when combined with DFT calculations, these SSNMR experiments permit the study of local hydroxyl group configurations within the MOF channels. Zn-67 SSNMR experiments and DFT calculations are also used to explore the geometry near Zn within a set of four MOFs as well as local disordering caused by distributions of different linkers around the metal. SSNMR spectroscopy of metal centers offers an impressive addition to the arsenal of techniques for MOF characterization and is particularly useful in cases where XRD information may be ambiguous, incomplete, or unavailable.

Abstract:The predictable topologies and designable structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are the most important advantages for this emerging crystalline material compared to traditional porous materials. However, pore-environment engineering in MOF materials is still a huge challenge when it comes to the growing requirements of expanded applications. A useful method for the regulation of pore-environments, linker installation, has been developed and applied to a series of microporous MOFs. Herein, employing PCN-700 and PCN-608 as platforms, ionic linker installation was successfully implemented in both microporous and mesoporous Zr-based MOFs to afford a series of ionic frameworks. Selective ionic dye capture results support the ionic nature of these MOFs. The mesopores in PCN-608 are able to survive after installation of the ionic linkers, which is useful for ion exchange and further catalysis. To illustrate this, Ru(bpy)32+, a commonly used photoactive cation, was encapsulated into the anionic mesoporous PCN-608-SBDC via ion exchange. Photocatalytic activity of Ru(bpy)3@PCN-608-SBDC was examined by aza-Henry reactions, which show good catalytic performance over three catalytic cycles.

Effects of Phase Purity and Pore Reinforcement on Mechanical Behavior of NU-1000 and Silica-Infiltrated NU-1000 Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF) materials have shown promise in many applications, ranging from gas storage to absorption and catalysis. Because of the high porosity and low density of many MOFs, densification methods such as pelletization and extrusion are needed for practical use and for commercialization of MOF materials. Therefore, it is important to elucidate the mechanical properties of MOFs and to develop methods of further enhancing their mechanical strength. Here, we demonstrate the influence of phase purity and the presence of a pore-reinforcing component on elastic modulus and yield stress of NU-1000 MOFs through nanoindentation methods and finite element simulation. Three types of NU-1000 single crystals were compared: phase-pure NU-1000 prepared with biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid as a modulator (NU-1000-bip), NU-1000 prepared with benzoic acid as a modulator (NU-1000-ben), which results in an additional, denser impurity phase of NU-901, and NU-1000-bip whose mesopores were infiltrated with silica (SiOx(OH)y@NU-1000) by nanocasting methods. By maintaining phase purity and minimizing defects, the elastic modulus could be enhanced by nearly an order of magnitude: phase-pure NU-1000-bip crystals exhibited an elastic modulus of 21 GPa, whereas the value for NU-1000-ben crystals was only 3 GPa. Abstract:Gaining control over the assembly of mesoporous Zr‐based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with modifiable metal nodes remains a challenge. The the topology is intriguing, particularly if considering postsynthetic modification, as it presents large sodalite‐like cages surrounded by 12 interconnected 1D channels that allow for efficient diffusion of guest molecules throughout the structure. Herein, we demonstrate the first Zr MOF with the topology, NU‐1200, which was synthesized by controlling the geometry of the organic building unit. In addition, by using NU‐1200 as a platform, we perform solvent‐assisted metal incorporation to form single‐site metalated nodes, a process that is characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction.

Abstract:The rational reticular design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) from building units of known geometries is essential for enriching the diversity of MOF structures. Unexpected and intriguing structures, however, can also arise from subtle changes in the rigidity/length of organic linkers and/or synthetic conditions. Herein, we report three uranium-based MOF structures-i.e., NU-135X (X = 0, 1, 2)-synthesized from trigonal planar uranyl nodes and triptycene-based hexacarboxylate ligands with variable arm lengths. A new chiral 3,6-connected nuc net was observed in NU-1350, while the extended versions of the ligand led to 3-fold catenated MOFs (NU-1351 and NU-1352) with rare 3,6-connected cml-c3 nets. The differences in the topology of NU-1350 and NU-1351/NU-1352 could be attributed to the slight distortions of the shorter linker in the former from the ideal trigonal prism geometry to an octahedral geometry when coordinated to the trigonal planar uranyl nodes.

Abstract:Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) exhibit great structural tunability and outstanding chemical stability, rendering them promising candidates for a wide range of practical applications. In this work, we synthesized a series of isostructural PCN-224 analogues functionalized by ethyl, bromo, chloro, and fluoro groups on the porphyrin unit, which allowed us to explicitly study the effects of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents on catalytic performance in MOFs. Owing to the different electronic properties of ethyl, bromo, chloro, and fluoro substitutes, the molecular-level control over the chemical environment surrounding a catalytic center could be readily achieved in our MOFs. To investigate the effects of these substitutes on catalytic activity and selectivity, the oxidation of 3-methylpentane to corresponding alcohols and ketones was utilized as a model reaction. Within these five analogues of PCN-224, an extremely high turnover number of 7680 and turnover frequency of 10 240 h-1 was achieved by simply altering the substitutes on porphyrin rings. Moreover, a remarkable 99% selectivity of the tertiary alcohol over the five other possible by-products are realized. We demonstrate that this strategy can be used to efficiently screen a suitable peripheral environment around catalytic cores in MOFs for catalysis.

Abstract:While linkers with various conformations pose challenges in the design and prediction of metal–organic framework (MOF) structures, they ultimately provide great opportunities for the discovery of novel structures thereby enriching structural diversity. Tetratopic carboxylate linkers, for example, have been widely used in the formation of Zr-based MOFs due to the ability to target diverse topologies, providing a promising platform to explore their mechanisms of formation. However, it remains a challenge to control the resulting structures when considering the complex assembly of linkers with unpredicted conformations and diverse Zr6 node connectivities. Herein, we systematically explore how solvents and modulators employed during synthesis influence the resulting topologies of Zr-MOFs, choosing H4TCPB-Br2 (1,4-dibromo-2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene) as a representative tetratopic carboxylate linker. By modulating the reaction conditions, the conformations of the linker and the connectivities of the Zr6 node can be simultaneously tuned, resulting in four types of structures: a new topology (NU-500), she (NU-600), scu (NU-906), and csq (NU-1008). Importantly, we have synthesized the first 5-connected Zr6 node to date with the (4,4,4,5)-connected framework, NU-500. We subsequently performed detailed structural analyses to uncover the relationship between the structures and topologies of these MOFs and demonstrated the crucial role that the flexible linker played to access varied structures by different degrees of linker deformation. Abstract:UiO-66 is an archetypal metal–organic framework (MOF) with a very high surface area as well as high thermal stability. It is found that the stability can be attributed to the metal oxide node being cuboctahedral allowing for 12 extension points for 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC) coordination. Because of this and its exceptional tunability and functionality, which are largely due to defect control of both missing-cluster and missing-linker defects, UiO-66 has gained scientific popularity. The combination of these characteristics allows for a highly versatile material that can be adapted to many different applications. The purpose for this work is to provide a historic overview of UiO-66, outlining the major developments that changed the synthesis strategies of Zr-based MOF as well as current and future works, which include defect control, aqueous crystallization, functionality-stability trade-offs, and advanced topographies. A breakdown of the various UiO-66 structures, including isoreticular and reo-type, and different characterization techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and nitrogen porosimetry are discussed as well.

Connecting Defects and Amorphization in UiO-66 and MIL-140 Metal-organic Frameworks: A Combined Experimental and Computational Study

Abstract:The mechanism and products of the structural collapse of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) UiO-66, MIL-140B and MIL-140C upon ball-milling are investigated through solid state 13C NMR and pair distribution function (PDF) studies, finding amorphization to proceed by the breaking of a fraction of metal-ligand bonding in each case. The amorphous products contain inorganic-organic bonding motifs reminiscent of the crystalline phases. Whilst the inorganic Zr6O4(OH)4 clusters of UiO-66 remain intact upon structural collapse, the ZrO backbone of the MIL-140 frameworks undergoes substantial distortion. Density functional theory calculations have been performed to investigate defective models of MIL-140B and show, through comparison of calculated and experimental 13C NMR spectra, that amorphization and defects in the materials are linked.

Abstract:Tetratopic organic linkers have been extensively used in Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) where diverse topologies have been observed. Achieving meticulous control over the topologies to tune the pore sizes and shapes of the resulting materials, however, remains a great challenge. Herein, by introducing substituents to the backbone of tetratopic linkers to affect the linker conformation, phase-pure Zr-MOFs with different topologies and porosity were successfully obtained under the same synthetic conditions. The conversion of CO2 to valuable cyclic carbonates is a promising route for the mitigation of the greenhouse gas. Owing to the presence of substrate accessible Lewis acidic Zr(iv) sites in the 8-connected Zr6 nodes, the Zr-MOFs in this study have been investigated as heterogenous acid catalysts for CO2 cycloaddition to styrene oxide. The MOFs exhibited drastically different catalytic activities depending on their distinct pore structures. Compared to previously reported MOF materials, a superior catalytic activity was observed with the mesoporous NU-1008, giving an almost 100% conversion under mild conditions.

Abstract:Understanding heterogeneous catalysts is a challenging pursuit due to surface site nonuniformity and aperiodicity in traditionally used materials. One example is sulfated metal oxides, which function as highly active catalysts and as supports for organometallic complexes. These applications are due to traits such as acidity, ability to act as a weakly coordinating ligand, and aptitude for promoting transformations via radical cation intermediates. Research is ongoing about the structural features of sulfated metal oxides that imbue the aforementioned properties, such as sulfate geometry and coordination. To better understand these materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been targeted as structurally defined analogues. Composed of inorganic nodes and organic linkers, MOFs possess features such as high porosity and crystallinity, which make them attractive for mechanistic studies of heterogeneous catalysts. In this work, Zr6-based MOF NU-1000 is sulfated and characterized using techniques such as single crystal X-ray diffraction in addition to diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The dynamic nature of the sulfate binding motif is found to transition from monodentate, to bidentate, to tridentate depending on the degree of hydration, as supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Heightened Brønsted acidity compared to the parent MOF was observed upon sulfation and probed through trimethylphosphine oxide physisorption, ammonia sorption, in situ ammonia DRIFTS, and DFT studies. With the support structure benchmarked, an organoiridium complex was chemisorbed onto the sulfated MOF node, and the efficacy of this supported catalyst was demonstrated for stoichiometric and catalytic activation of benzene-d6 and toluene with structure-activity relationships derived.

Abstract:Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) based on edge-transitive nets such as fcu, spn, she, csq, and ftw with diverse potential applications have been widely reported. Zr-MOFs based on the highly connected 6,12-connected alb net, however, remain absent on account of synthetic challenges. Herein we report the ligand-directed reticular syntheses and isoreticular expansion of a series of Zr-MOFs with the edge-transitive alb net from 12-connected hexagonal-prismatic Zr-6 nodes and 6-connected trigonal-prismatic linkers, i.e., microporous NU-1600, mesoporous NU-1601, and mesoporous NU-1602. These Zr-MOFs exhibit remarkable activities toward the destruction of a nerve agent (soman) and a nerve agent simulant (DMNP).

Abstract:Studying the hydrolytic stability in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is essential for practical implementations. Herein, we designed a new nanoporous MOF, NU-950, with sqc topology and studied the water sorption of three polymorphs NU-901 (scu), NU-1000 (csq), and NU-950 (sqc). The work reveled the effect of topology on the water stability. Additionally, we described a facile and generalizable method to improve the water stability of the as-synthesized Zr-based MOFs using a small hydrophobic capping agent, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). The work highlighted the synergistic effect of topology and pore environment control in improving the water stability of nanoporous Zr-based MOFs.

Abstract:Characterization of metal centers in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is critical for rational design and further understanding of structure-property relationships. The local structure of Zr atoms is challenging to properly elucidate in many Zr-MOFs, particularly when local disorder is present. Static 91Zr solid-state NMR spectra of the seven zirconium MOFs UiO-66, UiO-66-NH2, UiO-67, MOF-801, MOF-808, DUT-68 and DUT-69 have been acquired at high magnetic fields of 35.2 T and 19.6 T, yielding valuable information on the local structure, site symmetry, and order about Zr. 91Zr NMR is very sensitive to differences in MOF local structure caused by guest molecules, linker substitution, and post-synthetic treatment. Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations assist in the interpretation and assignment of 91Zr solid-state NMR spectra, lend insight into structural origins of 91Zr NMR parameters and enable determination of local Zr coordination environments. This approach can be extended to many other materials containing zirconium.

Abstract:Controlling the structure and functionality of crystalline metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) using molecular building units and post-synthetic functionalisation presents challenges when extending this approach to their amorphous counterparts (aMOFs). Here, we present a new bottom-up approach for synthesising a series of Zr-based aMOFs, which involves linking metal–organic clusters with specific ligands to regulate local connectivity. In addition, we overcome the limitations of post-synthetic modifications in amorphous systems, demonstrating that homogeneous functionalisation is achievable even without regular internal voids. By altering the acidity of the side group, length, and degree of connectivity of the linker, we could control the porosity, proton conductivity, and mechanical properties of the resulting aMOFs.

Abstract:The fundamental understanding of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial since the relationship between the macroscopic properties of these materials and their molecular-level structures allows for the development of technological applications and improvements in current performance. The metal centers and attached functional groups dictate MOFs' dynamics, structure, and porosity. The development of the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) technique, capable of providing atomic-level information, enables the non-destructive characterization of the structure and dynamics of MOFs have become essential step in ameliorating our understanding and are often complementary to traditional methods. This review aims to briefly introduce the concepts of SSNMR and the methods employed when investigating the dynamics, structure, and mapping of functional groups of microporous materials, including MOFs. This review highlights the best experimental practices when working with these complex systems. The article scrutinizes the information on framework structures, active center, surface position, host-guest interaction, and intermediate interaction through different SSNMR spectrums. Despite all the recent technological advancements, the SSNMR still faces the challenges of large sample quantities, long experimental measurements and data analyses, and complex isotopic labeling, which are enlightened in this review.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as an important family of compounds that have fascinating structures and diverse applications. But until now, targeted synthesis of MOFs with desired frameworks is still a challenge. In order to appreciate the properties and to design new frameworks, it is necessary to understand how to rationalize the design and synthesis of MOFs from a fundamental perspective. This highlight review will outline the recent advances in this topic from both our and other groups and provide an overview of the different factors influencing the structures of MOFs. These examples illustrate some of the present trends concerning the design of organic ligands and SBUs, coordination assemblies, and experimental conditions.

Abstract:Defect engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offers promising opportunities for tailoring their properties to specific functions and applications. However, determining the structures of defects in MOFs-either point defects or extended ones-has proved challenging owing to the difficulty of directly probing local structures in these typically fragile crystals. Here we report the real-space observation, with sub-unit-cell resolution, of structural defects in the catalytic MOF UiO-66 using a combination of low-dose transmission electron microscopy and electron crystallography. Ordered 'missing linker' and 'missing cluster' defects were found to coexist. The missing-linker defects, reconstructed three-dimensionally with high precision, were attributed to terminating formate groups. The crystallization of the MOF was found to undergo an Ostwald ripening process, during which the defects also evolve: on prolonged crystallization, only the missing-linker defects remained. These observations were rationalized through density functional theory calculations. Finally, the missing-cluster defects were shown to be more catalytically active than their missing-linker counterparts for the isomerization of glucose to fructose.
