Abstract:Cost-efficient and durable oxygen evolution catalysts are in great demand, which are dominated not only by the component of the electrocatalysts but also by their molecular structure and crystallinity. Herein, we developed an efficient cobalt-vanadium spinel-type electrocatalyst with an extremely high concentration of Co3+ ions by tuning the balanced vanadium ions' concentration in crystallinity-modulated Co2-xVxO4 nanoplates. This resulted in the lowest overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA/cm(2), the smallest Tafel slope of 45 mV dec(-1), and a current density of 100 mA/cm(2) at an overpotential of 280 mV for water oxidation, which is remarkably 20 times better than that of the benchmark RuO2 catalyst, along with excellent stability. Such excellent performance is due to the very high Co3+/Co2+ ratio of 2.84 achieved in situ in the lowcrystallinity Co2-xVxO4 (LC-Co2-xVxO4) sample, which is 40% higher than that of the widely reported Co3O4, as evidenced by both operando X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These findings stimulate the opportunities to explore Co2-xVxO4 as a class of nonprecious-metal-based efficient OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key process involved in energy and environment‐related technologies. An ideal OER electrocatalyst should show high exposure of active sites and optimal adsorption energies of oxygenated species. However, earth‐abundant transition‐metal‐based OER electrocatalysts still operate with sluggish OER kinetics. Here, a cation‐exchange route is reported to fabricate cobalt‐vanadium‐iron (oxy)hydroxide (CoV‐Fe0.28) nanosheets with tunable binding energies for the oxygenated intermediates. The formation of an amorphous/crystalline heterostructure in the CoV‐Fe0.28 catalyst boosts the exposure of active sites compared to their crystalline and amorphous counterparts. Furthermore, the synergetic interaction of Co, V, and Fe cations in the CoV‐Fe0.28 catalyst subtly regulates the local coordination environment and electronic structure, resulting in the optimal thermodynamic barrier for this elementary reaction step. As a result, the CoV‐Fe0.28 catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity toward the OER. A low overpotential of 215 mV is required to afford a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 39.1 mV dec−1, which outperforms commercial RuO2 (321 mV and 86.2 mV dec−1, respectively).

Abstract:Octahedral coordinated trivalent cobalt cations (CoOh3+) in metal oxyhydroxides are highly active catalytic sites for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a critical bottleneck for efficient water splitting; however, previous synthetic methods have limited control over these sites. Herein, a scalable electrodeposition method coupled with in situ oxidation to produce amorphous Co–Fe–W trimetallic oxyhydroxides enriched with CoOh3+ is developed. X‐ray absorption, in operando spectroscopic analysis, and computational studies reveal that 72% of the Co atoms are present in CoOh3+ sites. Fe and W synergistically affect the electronic structure of Co and provide a favorable coordination environment. The Co–Fe–W oxyhydroxide exhibits superior OER catalytic performance with an impressive turnover frequency of 1.96 s−1 at an overpotential of 300 mV, a low Tafel slope of 32 mV dec−1, and small activation energy of 53 kJ mol−1 in alkaline electrolyte. The catalyst directly deposited on Ni foams can serve as a robust OER electrode in two‐electrode water electrolyzers; they deliver a current density of 100 mA cm−2 at a small overpotential of 234 mV in alkaline electrolyte with excellent durability under 100 mA cm−2 over 120 h. These catalysts are excellent for practical water splitting applications.

Abstract:Cost-effective production of solar fuels requires robust and earth-abundant oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Herein, we report that ultrathin nanoplates of cobalt-manganese layered double hydroxide (CoMn LDH) are a highly active and stable oxygen evolution catalyst. The catalyst was fabricated by a one-pot coprecipitation method at room temperature, and its turnover frequency (TOF) is more than 20 times higher than the TOFs of Co and Mn oxides and hydroxides, and 9 times higher than the TOF of a precious IrO2 catalyst. The activity of the catalyst was promoted by anodic conditioning, which was proposed to form amorphous regions and reactive Co(IV) species on the surface. The stability of the catalyst was demonstrated by continued electrolysis.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis requires the practical use of efficient, robust, and economical water-oxidation catalysts (WOCs) for chemical-fuel production. The synthesis of amorphous cobalt oxide nanoparticles (ca. 2nm) is reported as a WOC with a turnover frequency up to 8.6s(-1) in the photocatalytic Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)-Na2S2O8 system (bpy=2,2-bipyridyl). This activity is unprecedented in heterogeneous cobalt-based WOCs and is even comparable to that of a state-of-the-art homogeneous cobalt-based polyoxometalate catalyst. With the help of experimental and computational X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the atomic structure of the synthesized amorphous cobalt oxide nanoparticles was characterized, and it consists of a one-dimensional chain of dimeric edge-sharing CoO6 octahedra. Theoretical calculations suggest that this structure was able to promote O-O bond coupling, unlike crystalline cobalt oxide WOCs, which led to the enhanced water-oxidation activity.
Facile Deposition of Nanostructured Cobalt Oxide Catalysts from Molecular Cobaloximes for Efficient Water Oxidation

Abstract:Cobaloximes are usually used as molecular hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. Herein we report for the first time the use of molecular cobaloximes as catalyst precursors for water oxidation when anodic potentials were applied. Highly active thin catalyst films were deposited at +1.5 V and +1.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) in 0.1 M borate buffer solution at pH = 9.2 containing 1 mM cobaloximes. Four catalyst films (CoOx-1-CoOx-4) were synthesized from four different cobaloximes. The current densities of CoOx-1 were up to ~5.5 mA cm(-2) and ~2.6 mA cm(-2) when the applied potentials were +1.5 V and +1.1 V, respectively, which were higher than the current densities of CoOx-2, CoOx-3 and CoOx-4 under the same conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images reveal that the nanometer-sized particles of CoOx-1 possibly contribute to its high activity while the other three catalysts have micrometer-sized amorphous materials on the surface of FTO. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data displayed the valence state of the cobalt element as Co(ii) or Co(iii) oxide species. The morphological stability of the CoOx-1 catalyst was further studied using SEM.
Atomically-thin non-layered cobalt oxide porous sheets for highly efficient oxygen-evolving electrocatalysts

Abstract:Water electrolysis for hydrogen production requires better catalysts to lower the kinetic barrier of the oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, conceptually-new, noble-metal-free, porous, atomically-thick sheets are first put forward as an excellent platform to promote the oxygen evolution activity through affording abundant catalytically active sites and enhanced two-dimensional conductivity. As an example, the synthetic porous Co3O4 atomically-thick sheets with a thickness of 0.43 nm and about 30% pore occupancy afford low-coordinated Co3+ atoms to serve as the catalytically active sites, while the obviously increased density of states at the valence band and conduction band edge facilitate fast electron transport along their two-dimensional conducting paths. As a result, the porous, atomically-thick Co3O4 sheets exhibit an electrocatalytic current up to 341.7 mA cm(-2), roughly 50-times larger than that of the bulk counterpart and even more strikingly higher than that of most existing reports under similar conditions. This work holds great promise for triggering breakthroughs in the field of electrocatalysis.

Abstract:The sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a pivotal process for renewable energy technologies, such as water splitting. The discovery of efficient, durable, and earth‐abundant electrocatalysts for water oxidation is highly desirable. Here, a novel trimetallic nitride compound grown on nickel foam (CoVFeN @ NF) is demonstrated, which is an ultra‐highly active OER electrocatalyst that outperforms the benchmark catalyst, RuO2, and most of the state‐of‐the‐art 3D transition metals and their compounds. CoVFeN @ NF exhibits ultralow OER overpotentials of 212 and 264 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm−2 in 1 m KOH, respectively, together with a small Tafel slop of 34.8 mV dec−1. Structural characterization reveals that the excellent catalytic activity mainly originates from: 1) formation of oxyhydroxide species on the surface of the catalyst due to surface reconstruction and phase transition, 2) promoted oxygen evolution possibly activated by peroxo‐like (O22−) species through a combined lattice‐oxygen‐oxidation and adsorbate escape mechanism, 3) an optimized electronic structure and local coordination environment owing to the synergistic effect of the multimetal system, and 4) greatly accelerated electron transfer as a result of nitridation. This study provides a simple approach to rationally design cost‐efficient and highly catalytic multimetal compound systems as OER catalysts for electrochemical energy devices.

Abstract:Catalysts with amorphous structures have shown excellent performance in electrocatalytic water oxidation, but it remains a challenge to prepare efficient catalysts using simple methods while maintaining high yields. Herein, amorphous FexCoyWz oxides nanoparticles were prepared by a one-step co-precipitation method, and the Fe content was optimized to ensure efficient water oxidation. The prepared Fe0.05Co0.09W0.61O0.25 had the best OER performance with a yield of 95.6% when the Co and Fe feeding ratio was 2:1. The Fe0.05Co0.09W0.61O0.25 possessed an overpotential of 267 mV at 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 39.4 mV dec−1. The activation energy at 1.5 V is only 49.4 kJ mol−1, and Faraday efficiency is close to 100%. The water oxidation performance of the two-electrode test shows that the voltages at 10 mA cm−2 are only 1.50 V. In addition, it still maintained high activity after 72 h of chronoamperometry test, which exhibits excellent water oxidation performance among similar non-precious transition metal catalysts. Therefore, the present work provides a simple and easy way to prepare high-activity and high-yield transition metal amorphous electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Exploiting robust and durable electrocatalysts for water splitting remains a challenge due to its sluggish oxidative half reaction. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and novel strategy to prepare an amorphous N-doped cobalt borophosphate catalyst through the calcination of zeolite-type cobalt borophosphate precursor with NH3 molecule. The as prepared material displays robust catalytic activity and high stability within 18 h for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH, e.g., an overpotential of 276 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) (eta @ 10 mA cm(-2)) and a Tafel slope of 55.8 mV dec(-1), which is comparable to that of the benchmark IrO2 electrocatalyst. Its excellent catalytic activity should be ascribed to the N-dopant which could accelerate the electron transfer by tuning the electronic structure of this borophosphate; moreover, this amorphous phase with zeolite-like porous structures could increase its active site density and improve the electron and mass transport as well as facilitating gas release. Our study not only discovers a high-efficiency OER electrocatalyst but also provides a facile and practical pathway to develop promising electrocatalysts for water splitting.
Rich oxygen vacancy and amorphous/crystalline ruthenium-doped CoCu -layered double hydroxide electrocatalysts for enhanced oxygen evolution reactions

Abstract:Reinforcing the development of efficient and robust electrocatalysts is pivotal in addressing the challenges associated with oxygen evolution reactions (OER) in water splitting technology. Here, an amorphous/crystalline low-ruthenium-doped bimetallic layered double hydroxide (LDH) electrocatalyst (a/c-CoCu + Ru x -LDH/NF) with massive oxygen vacancy on nickel foam was fabricated via ion-exchange and chemical etching, facilitating efficient OER. Among the various catalyst materials tested, the a/c-CoCu + Ru 10 -LDH/NF exhibits remarkable performance in the OER when employed in an alkaline electrolyte containing 1 M KOH. Achieving a minimal overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 of 214 mV, exhibiting a low Tafel slope value of 64.3 mV dec −1 and exceptional durability lasting for over 60 h. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the electron structure and d-band center of CoCu-LDH can be effectively regulated through the utilization of a strategy possessing abundant oxygen vacancies and a Ru-doped crystalline/amorphous heterostructure. It will lead to optimized adsorption free energy of reactants and reduced energy barriers for OER. The construction strategy proposed in this paper for catalysts with amorphous/crystalline heterointerfaces offer a novel opportunity to achieve highly efficient OER.

Abstract:The process of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water splitting is intricate and demands a substantial amount of energy. It necessitates the utilization of catalysts that are both highly efficient and durable in order to overcome the slow reaction kinetics. Amorphous, high-entropy oxide nanoparticles were prepared using simple one-step coprecipitation in this work. Due to highly disordered atomic arrangement in the amorphous structure of these catalysts and their high specific surface area, they compete to form active sites in the OER. Among them, IrRuCrFeCoNiO x demonstrated the optimal OER catalytic activity, requiring just a low overpotential (190 mV) with minimal Tafel slope (51.1 mV dec −1 ) to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Through surface self-reconstruction in the OER, a crystalline active layer with a thickness of several nanometers formed on the catalyst's surface. The stable core-shell nanoarchitectures composed of crystalline and amorphous regions substantially improved the stability of the catalyst. This work verified the effectiveness of high-entropy design and the significant improvement of noble metal doping on OER performance. It develops a new OER catalyst for water splitting with great activity and stability.

Abstract:As electrochemical water splitting is an extremely promising direction for solving future energy problems and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key half-reaction in water splitting, it is necessary to develop a new type of highly active and stable non-noble metal catalyst. Herein, we construct a series of hierarchical structure by modifying ZIF-67 on clustered-MnO 2 nanotubes which are used as precursor. The compounds, marked as 2 (X = CoS x , Co 3 O 4 and CoP). Compared with pure MnO 2 nanotubes, the obtained derivatives imaginably result in the unique hierarchical structure and introduce synergistic effect between MnO 2 and Co-based species that result in higher performance. In Particular, owing to the abundant active sites, a facil mass transfer pathway and improved electrical conductivity in amorphous/crystallize hierarchical structure, CoS x @MnO 2 possesses the highest electrocatalytic activity with a lower overpotential of 329 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which is superior to most MnO 2 -based catalyst previously reported. Most importantly, to expand this strategy is an effective way to synthesize more high-activity catalysts.

Abstract:Developing efficient, durable, and low-cost earth-abundant elements-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts by rapid and scalable strategies is of great importance for future sustainable electrochemical hydrogen production. The earth-abundant high-valency metals, especially vanadium, can modulate the electronic structure of 3d metal oxides and oxyhydroxides and offer the active sites near-optimal adsorption energies for OER intermediates. Here, the authors propose a facile assembling and regulating strategy to controllably synthesize a serial of transition metal (CoFe, NiFe, and NiCo)-based vanadates for efficient OER catalysis. By tuning the reaction concentrations, NiFe-based vanadates with different crystallinities can be facilely regulated, where the catalyst with moderate heterophase (mixed crystalline and amorphous structures) shows the best OER catalytic activity in terms of low overpotential (267 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 ), low Tafel slope (38 mV per decade), and excellent long-term durability in alkaline electrolyte, exceeding its noble metal-based counterparts (RuO2 ) and most current existing OER catalysts. This work not only reports a facile and controllable method to synthesize a series of vanadates-based catalysts with heterophase nanostructures for high-performance OER catalysis, but also may expand the scope of designing cost-effective transition metal-based electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting is a crucial area in sustainable energy development, and the development of highly efficient bifunctional catalysts that exhibit activity toward both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of paramount importance. Co3O4 is a promising candidate catalyst, owing to the variable valence of Co, which can be exploited to enhance the bifunctional catalytic activity of HER and OER through rational adjustments of the electronic structure of Co atoms. In this study, we employed a plasma-etching strategy in combination with an in situ filling of heteroatoms to etch the surface of Co3O4, creating abundant oxygen vacancies, while simultaneously filling them with nitrogen and sulfur heteroatoms. The resulting N/S-VO-Co3O4 exhibited favorable bifunctional activity for alkaline electrocatalytic water splitting, with significantly enhanced HER and OER catalytic activity compared to pristine Co3O4. In an alkaline overall water-splitting simulated electrolytic cell, N/S-VO-Co3O4 || N/S-VO-Co3O4 showed excellent overall water splitting catalytic activity, comparable to noble metal benchmark catalysts Pt/C || IrO2, and demonstrated superior long-term catalytic stability. Additionally, the combination of in situ Raman spectroscopy with other ex situ characterizations provided further insight into the reasons behind the enhanced catalyst performance achieved through the in situ incorporation of N and S heteroatoms. This study presents a facile strategy for fabricating highly efficient cobalt-based spinel electrocatalysts incorporated with double heteroatoms for alkaline electrocatalytic monolithic water splitting.

Abstract:Providing the direct experimental evidence for confirming active and stable phase in cobalt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium is crucial to design and fabricate high-performance electrocatalysts. Herein, we report the in situ fabrication of pure cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) phase with highly porous structures during OER testing process, which exhibits outstanding performance for OER with a low overpotential of 245 mV at 10 mAcm(-2) and retain stable catalytic activity for 250 h with no appreciable decay. Experimental characterizations revealed that the superior catalytic activity of as-formed CoOOH phase mainly arises from the highly porous structures, which endows the electrocatalyst with high specific surface area (similar to 200m(2) g(-1)), numerous accessible channels and abundant active sites. Evidence has been produced showing that the in situ formed pure CoOOH is the active and stable phase in cobalt-based electrocatalysts for OER in alkaline medium. In addition, the synthetic strategy applied here could provide a novel way to fabricate nanoporous structures under mild conditions using electrochemical oxidation method. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:It is a challenging task to seek a highly-efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of water splitting. Non-noble Co-based nanomaterials are considered as earth-abundant and effective catalysts to lower overpotential and increase polarization current density of OER. In this work, we reported, for the first time, a “rapid solvent-evaporation” strategy for the synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) cobalt complex hierarchical architectures constructed by two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. The 3D structured cobalt complexes have excellent performances in catalyzing OER with lower onset potential, overpotential, Tafel slope and better stability than commercial IrO 2 . Superior electrochemical performances would be beneficial from the unique 3D structure. This extremely simple method for 3D Co complex with good OER activities makes the complex be promising commercial OER catalyst to replace earth-rare and expensive IrO 2 .

Abstract:The development of efficient and robust non-precious electrocatalysts for water oxidation at a mild condition is extremely desirable for industrial water splitting. Herein we developed a facile solvothermal strategy to synthesize cobalt metal organic frameworks (Co-MOFs) with sheet-like structure, which showed highly promising performance for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution. The best Co-MOF sample afforded an ultra-high oxygen evolution current density of 63.4 mA cm-2 at 1.75 V in 1 M KOH with a catalyst loading of only 0.21 mg cm-2. Notably, its electrochemical performance remained unchanged after 10,000 cyclic voltammograms indicating very promising long-term stability. Detailed study of the mechanism of the oxygen evolution by density functional theory (DFT) indicated that the strong π-conjugation formed between the central cobalt ion and adjacent aromatic rings favored the high electrocatalytic performance. The solvothermally synthesized MOFs proposed in this paper are expected to inspire the rational design of high-performance electrocatalysts for water oxidation with atomic and molecular level structural control and the exploration of structure-performance relationships to understand the electrocatalytic origin.
