Abstract:In this work, we have designed and synthesized two hybrid nonfused electron acceptors with a perylene diimide pendant (denoted TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6), where TPDICPBI featured a rigid linker, whereas TPDICPBI-C6 incorporated a flexible linker. It was realized via synthesizing the perylene diimide-containing dibromine compounds and performing the Stille reaction followed by Knoevenagel condensation. TPDICPBI with the rigid linker exhibits a much higher glass transition temperature (T g, 208 degrees C) compared to that (92 degrees C) of TPDICPBI-C6 with the flexible linker, which can be attributed to the rigid linker that limits the motion of both TPDIC and the PBI unit. Then, the two electron acceptors were applied to organic solar cells (OSCs). Devices based on TPDICPBI gave a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.91%, and TPDICPBI-C6-based devices showed a reduced PCE of 8.39%. Morphological characterization revealed that both TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6 exhibited overall weak aggregation/crystallization properties. The results suggest that by employing rational molecular engineering to adjust the aggregation/crystallization properties of TPDICPBI, the hybrid electron acceptors will give satisfactory photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Unfused acceptors have attracted considerable attention due to their simple synthesis and low cost compared to their fused-ring counterparts. Herein, a simple fully unfused acceptor 2T2Se-F, with selenophene to link 2,6-di(hexyloxy)phenyl substituted bithiophene and the terminal groups of fluorinated 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone (DFIC), was designed and synthesized. The single crystal structure of 2T2Se-F indicates that the collaborated π−π interactions from H-aggregations of molecular backbones and J-aggregations of terminal groups and terminal groups/selenophenyl rings form an ordered three-dimensional interpenetrating network. 2T2Se-F film displays near-infrared absorption with a low bandgap of 1.44 eV. After blending with the polymeric donor PM6, an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.17% was obtained with a high short-circuit current density of 20.63 mA cm−2 and a fill factor of 0.669, which is among the highest values for organic solar cells based on fully unfused non-fullerene acceptors so far.

Abstract:Three non-fullerene acceptors, i.e. IDT2SeC2C4, IDT2SeC2C42F and IDT2SeC2C44F, with selenophene π bridge between central alkylated indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene (IDT) unit and terminal 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanones (ICs) with 0–2 fluorine substituents were synthesized. These molecules presented low optical band gaps in the range of 1.30–1.44 eV. Moreover, compared with the counterparts with phenyl side chains on IDT unit, the alkyl-based molecules achieved higher electron mobility owing to the more ordered and closer π-π stacking. Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on the non-fullerene acceptors were fabricated with the wide band gap polymer PBDB-T as donor. Attributed to the desired morphology with more obvious fibril-like structures, the devices based on IDT2SeC2C42F and IDT2SeC2C44F with fluorinated IC terminals delivered high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 10%, whereas the devices based on DT2SeC2C4 showed a lower PCE of 8.92%.

Abstract:Non-fullerene acceptors have recently attracted tremendous interest because of their potential as alternatives to fullerene derivatives in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. However, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) have lagged far behind those of the polymer/fullerene system, mainly because of the low fill factor (FF) and photocurrent. Here we report a novel perylene bisimide (PBI) acceptor, SdiPBI-Se, in which selenium atoms were introduced into the perylene core. With a well-established wide-band-gap polymer (PDBT-T1) as the donor, a high efficiency of 8.4% with an unprecedented high FF of 70.2% is achieved for solution-processed non-fullerene organic solar cells. Efficient photon absorption, high and balanced charge carrier mobility, and ultrafast charge generation processes in PDBT-T1:SdiPBI-Se films account for the high photovoltaic performance. Our results suggest that non-fullerene acceptors have enormous potential to rival or even surpass the performance of their fullerene counterparts.

Abstract:In this work, we present a non-fullerene electron acceptor bearing a fused five-heterocyclic ring containing selenium atoms, denoted as IDSe-T-IC, for fullerene-free polymer solar cells (PSCs). This molecule exhibits a low band gap (E-g = 1.52 eV), strong absorption in the 600-850 nm region and a high LUMO level (-3.79 eV). When a large band gap polymer J51 (E-g = 1.91 eV) was used as the donor, complementary absorption of the polymer donor and acceptor was obtained in the wavelength range of 350-850 nm. The solar cell based on J51:IDSe-T-IC gives a maximum PCE of 8.6%, with a high V-oc of 0.91 V, a J(sc) of 15.20 mA cm(-2) and a fill factor (FF) of 62.0%. Moreover, this performance is much higher than that of J51:PC71BM based PSCs under similar device fabrication conditions (PCE = 6.0%). The trade-off features of the J(sc) and V-oc existing in PSCs with fullerene acceptors have been minimized in the fullerene-free PSCs based on IDSe-T-IC and J51. The results demonstrate that fine-tuning the absorption and electronic energy levels of non-fullerene acceptors, and properly selecting a polymer donor to achieve complementary absorption, is a promising way to further improve the performance of the PSCs.

Abstract:A novel polymer donor (PBDTS-Se) is designed to match with a non-fullerene acceptor (SdiPBI-S). The corresponding solar cells show a high efficiency of 8.22%, which result from synergetic improvements of light harvesting, charge carrier transport and collection, and morphology. The results indicate that rational design of novel donor materials is important for non-fullerene organic solar cells.

Abstract:Compared to the traditional fullerene derivatives, non-fullerene acceptors show more tunable absorption bands as well as adjustable energy levels which are favorable for further PCE enhancement of organic solar cells. In order to enhance light-harvesting property of dithienonaphthalene (DTN)-based acceptors, we designed and synthesized two novel non-fullerene acceptors (DTNIF and DTNSF) based on a ladder-type DTN donor core flanked with two different acceptor units. In combination with a benchmark wide bandgap copolymer (PBDB-T), the best performance device based on DTNIF displayed a high PCE of 8.73% with a short-circuit current (J sc) of 13.26 mA cm-2 and a large fill factor (FF) of 72.77%. With a reduced bandgap of DTNSF, the corresponding best performance device showed an increased J sc of 14.49 mA cm-2 although only a moderate PCE of 7.15% was achieved. These findings offer a molecular design strategy to control the bandgap of DTN-based non-fullerene acceptors with improved light-harvesting.

Abstract:A set of isomeric ladder type non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), SRID-4F and TRID-4F, was designed and synthesized to systematically investigate the structure- property relationship of selenium substitution on A-D-A type NFAs. It was found that regio-specific selenium substitution not only affects the optical and electrochemical properties but also changes the morphology of thin films. Photovoltaic devices based on SRID-4F showed a high power conversion efficiency of >13% when paired with polymeric donor PBDB-T-2F.

Abstract:Near infrared (NIR) acceptors are the key components for the construction of efficient organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and organic photodetectors (OPDs). Herein, a near-infrared acceptor named 6TSe-OFIC incorporating selenium heterocycles has been designed, which shows an absorption onset around 1000 nm with a low optical bandgap of 1.29 eV. OPV device based on PCE10: 6TSe-OFIC demonstrates a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.18% with a high and broad EQE response. The semi-transparent OPV device based on PCE10: 6TSe-OFIC shows a PCE of 10.06% with AVT 20%. With the same active layer, the OPD devices achieve the responsivities of 0.54 A W−1 at ∼850 nm. The results highlight the opportunities to careful design of the NIR molecules for efficient OPVs and OPDs.

Abstract:An electron acceptor with a truxene core and ring-fusion perylene diimide (PDI) tripolymer annulated by selenium (Se) branch, named as FTr-3PDI-Se, is designed and synthesized. FTr-3PDI-Se exhibits large conjugated planar conformation, strong absorption spectra in the regions of 300–400 and 450–550 nm, the deep HOMO energy level of 6.10 eV, and high decomposition temperature above 400°C. The FTr-3PDI-Se: PBDB-T-2Cl based device achieved a disappointing power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.6% together with a high V oc of 1.12 V. The low PCE was due to the large aggregates of blend film, the imbalanced hole/electron transport and low PL quenching efficiencies. The high V oc can be attributed to the high-lying LUMO level of FTr-3PDI-Se and the low-lying HOMO level of PBDB-T-2Cl. Our research presents an interesting and effective molecule-designing method to develop non-fullerene acceptor.

Abstract:Abstract Reducing the energy loss of sub-cells is critical for high performance tandem organic solar cells, while it is limited by the severe non-radiative voltage loss via the formation of non-emissive triplet excitons. Herein, we develop an ultra-narrow bandgap acceptor BTPSeV-4F through replacement of terminal thiophene by selenophene in the central fused ring of BTPSV-4F, for constructing efficient tandem organic solar cells. The selenophene substitution further decrease the optical bandgap of BTPSV-4F to 1.17 eV and suppress the formation of triplet exciton in the BTPSV-4F-based devices. The organic solar cells with BTPSeV-4F as acceptor demonstrate a higher power conversion efficiency of 14.2% with a record high short-circuit current density of 30.1 mA cm −2 and low energy loss of 0.55 eV benefitted from the low non-radiative energy loss due to the suppression of triplet exciton formation. We also develop a high-performance medium bandgap acceptor O1-Br for front cells. By integrating the PM6:O1-Br based front cells with the PTB7-Th:BTPSeV-4F based rear cells, the tandem organic solar cell demonstrates a power conversion efficiency of 19%. The results indicate that the suppression of triplet excitons formation in the near-infrared-absorbing acceptor by molecular design is an effective way to improve the photovoltaic performance of the tandem organic solar cells.

Abstract:In this work, two new low-bandgap electron acceptors NITI-SeS and NITI-SSe that use electron-rich 2-alkylselenopheno[3,4-b]thiophene and 2-alkylselenopheno[2,3-c]thiophene with different quinoidal-resonance effect as π-bridges to link the weak electron-donating indenoindene core and the strong electron-accepting INCN-2F terminal are designed and synthesized. NITI-SeS that has a selenium atom in the main ring shows an obviously redshift absorption, leading to a low optical bandgap of 1.46 eV in thin film. By matching two acceptors with the polymer donor PBDB-T, the NITI-SSe-based device delivered a higher PCE of 12.49% with an open-circuit voltage of 0.91 V, a short-circuit current of 19.41 mA cm−2, and a fill factor of 0.70. This work reveals a convenient but effective method to finely tune the bandgap of non-fullerene acceptors for high-efficiency OSCs.We design and synthesis of NITI-SeS and NITI-SSe by introducing selenophene to modulate the quinoidal-resonance intensity. NITI-SSe, in which contains weak quinoidal effect selenopheno[2,3-c]thiophene show a 34 nm blueshift than NITI-SeS. NITI-SSe-based device obtained a high PCE of 12.49%. This work reveals a convenient but effective method to finely tune the bandgap of non-fullerene acceptors for high-efficiency OSCs.

Abstract:An outmost selenophene-functionalized electron-rich central core (indacenodithieno[3,2-b]selenophene) and a new non-halogenated A-D-A architecture non-fullerene small molecular acceptor (NF-SMA) (TSeTIC) based on indacenodithieno[3,2-b]selenophene as the central unit and thiophene-fused IC as a terminal group was designed and synthesized for high performance organic solar cells. In contrast to the similar NF-SMA (TTTIC) with an indacenodithieno[3,2-b]thiophene unit, TSeTIC exhibited a stronger and red-shifted absorption spectrum, higher highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level, and enhanced electron mobility in neat thin films. Furthermore, a TSeTIC/PM6-based device presented higher hole/electron mobility, better phase separation features with favorable morphology, and higher charge dissociation and collection efficiency than a TTTIC/PM6-based device, resulting in remarkably improved J(sc) and FF without sacrificing the V-oc. Therefore, compared to the best PCE of 12.05% with an energy loss (E-loss) of 0.64 eV for the PM6/TTTIC device, the optimized PM6/TSeTIC device yields a significantly higher PCE of 13.71% with a higher FF of 75.9% and decreased E-loss of 0.60 eV. It is worth noting that the excellent PCE of 13.71% is the highest recorded for A-D-A structural NF-SMAs with thiophene-containing terminal groups for binary organic solar cells. These results demonstrate that the synergistic strategy of using an indacenodithieno[3,2-b]selenophene core unit and thiophene-containing IC end group is a promising avenue to enhance the PCE of non-halogenated NF-SMAs with high V-oc and FF as well as low E-loss.

Abstract:Three perylene diimide (PDI) tetramers annulated by oxygen (O), sulfur (S), and selenium (Se), named as SF‐4PDI‐O, SF‐4PDI‐S, and SF‐4PDI‐Se, are designed, synthesized, and paired with polymeric donor PDBT‐T1 to construct organic solar cells. The heteroatoms' effects on photoelectric properties, chemical geometry, charge transport, active‐layer morphology, and photovoltaic performance are investigated in detail. These PDI acceptors exhibit a similar absorption profile, whereas the highest occupied molecular orbitals and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals are simultaneously upshifted when heteroatoms are altered from O and S to Se due to the gradually weakening electronegativity. Alongside PDBT‐T1, SF‐4PDI‐O achieves an outstanding power conversion efficiency of 8.904% with a high fill factor of 0.706, outcompeting its S‐annulated and Se‐annulated counterparts. The superiority of the PDBT‐T1:SF‐4PDI‐O system lies in its stronger crystallinity, more balanced hole and electron mobilities, and weaker bimolecular recombination, coupled with more efficient charge transfer and collection. These results shed light on the invention of high‐performance PDI acceptors by oxygen‐decorated methodology.
Effect of Π-Bridges on the Performance of Indeno[1,2-B]fluorene-based Non-Fullerene Small Molecular Acceptors

Abstract:Two non-fullerene acceptors based on the indeno[1,2-b]fluorene central moiety, with selenophene or 2-vinylselenophene as pi-bridges and 2-(5,6-difuoro-3-oxo-2,3- dihydro1H-inden-1-ylidene)malononitrile as end-capping groups, i.e. FICBF-Se and FICBF-SeVi, were synthesized, and the structure-property relationships of the acceptors were systematically studied. The introduction of the vinylene group led to clearly redshifted and broader absorption and a smaller bandgap. FICBF-Se and FICBF-SeVi exhibited optical bandgaps of 1.68 and 1.54 eV, respectively. Solar cells using polymer PBDB-T as a donor and FICBF-Se as an acceptor demonstrated a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.25% with a short-circuit current density (J(sc)) of 11.61 mA cm(-2). However, the device based on PBDB-T/FICBF-SeVi only delivered a PCE of 3.63% with a J(sc) of 9.08 mA cm(-2), which should be mainly because the vinylene group decreased the crystallinity and its active layer morphology showed no distinct phase separation.
Highly Efficient Organic Solar Cells Based on S,N-Heteroacene Non-Fullerene Acceptors

Abstract:Two novel non-fullerene acceptors, SN6IC and SN6IC-4F, based on an S,N-heteroacene backbone were designed and synthesized. The cyclopentadiene fragments of commonly used acceptors were replaced with pyrrole rings to improve the electron-donating ability to increase the energy levels of the molecules. Both acceptors match well with the absorption and energy levels of the polymer donor PBDB-T, and PBDB-T:SN6IC-4F-based solar cells showed an excellent power conversion efficiency of 13.2%, with a relatively small V-OC loss of 0.54 eV. This study proves that the introduction of a nitrogen atom to replace the sp(3)-hybridized carbon in the fused ring is very effective for making highly efficient NFAs to further improve the performance of organic solar cells.

Abstract:Solar photon-to-electron conversion with polymer solar cells (PSCs) has experienced rapid development in the recent few years. Even so, the exploration of molecules and devices in efficiently converting near-infrared (NIR) photons into electrons remains critical, yet challenging. Herein presented is a family of near-infrared nonfullerene acceptors (NIR NFAs, T1-T4) with fluorinated regioisomeric A-Aπ-D-Aπ-A backbones for constructing efficient single-junction and tandem PSCs with photon response up to 1000 nm. It is found that the tuning of the regioisomeric bridge (Aπ) and fluoro (F)-substituents on a molecular skeleton strongly influences the backbone conformation and conjugation, leading to the optimized optoelectronic and stable stacking of resultant NFAs, which eventually impacts the performance of derived PSCs. In PSCs, the proximal NFAs with varied F-atoms (T1-T3) mostly outperform than that of distal NFA (T4). Notably, single-junction PSC with PTB7-Th:T2 blend can reach 10.87% power conversion efficiency (PCE), after implementing a solvent additive to improve blend morphology. Moreover, efficient tandem PSCs are fabricated through integrating such NIR cells with mediate bandgap nonfullerene-based subcells, to achieve a PCE of 14.64%. The results reveal the structural design of organic semiconductor and device with improved photovoltaic performance.
