Abstract:Significant development of coal fired power plant has been made in China in the past decades. Over 50 units of 1000MW ultra-supercritical (USC) plant have been constructed with designed net efficiency as high as 45%. Precious and critical knowledge for design, construction and operation has been accumulated from these units, which make China stepping into the advanced coal fired power industry field. To increase the plant net efficiency further, USC double reheat unit is proved to be a promising technology in the current industrial level while the 700〜800℃ plans are the possible technology in the long term goal. In China, USC double reheat plan is now performing in Laiwu, Anyuan, and Taizhou plants. In this paper, fundamental problems including material over permit temperature, steam temperature adjustment, and exhaust gas heat recovery are discussed in detail. Based on the operational experiences worldwide, the USC double reheat unit is considered to gain satisfying performance in the future.
Development of Ultra-supercritical Power Plant in China

Abstract:According to the increasing demand of energy and environmental requirements, the ultra-supercritical (USC) power plants, with the priority of the high power generation efficiency, reliability, fuel saving, low pollutants emission and advanced technology, have got rapid development in China. In this paper the development history and the state art of the USC power plants were introduced, including the technology transfer, the investment market and R&D programs supported by the government. The investigation shows the necessity and feasibility for the development of the USC units in China. Through the comparisons of the different types pulverized coal-fired power generation plants, the main characteristics of USC power unit were presented. Also the effects of the choice of steam parameters, the type of the boiler and gas turbine and the advanced materials on the operation of the USC units with the high efficiency and under the safety were analyzed. Through the investigation of the design, manufacture facilities, construction and running process of the USC units, the exiting key problems were discussed, together with some helpful suggestion and prospect on the development of the technology route.

Abstract:Owing to the growing environmental concerns, super-critical and ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plants dominate the electricity generation with the demand of near-zero air pollutant emission in China. Therefore, it is highly expected to assess the environmental impact and optimize the design at global and local levels. Exergoenvironmental analysis is a valid approach to investigate the formation of environmental impacts (EIs) associated with energy conversion systems at the component level. It generates information crucial for designing systems with a lower overall environmental impact, based on life cycle assessment (LCA) and exergy analysis. A 600 MW supercritical coal-fired system with and without dust, SO2 and NOx mitigation controls was analyzed. Heat transfer in the boiler, condenser(CND), low pressure cylinder(LP), air preheater(APH) show high potential to decrease the environmental impact due to high exergy destructions. The deaerator (DEA), induced draft fan(IDF), forced draft fan(FDF) should be focussed on construction design and manufacturing optimization. Purification units reveal high benefit for reducing EI produced by coal combustion, but there is a large space for the EI saving for it. The specific EI of electricity in China is much greater than European.
Research on Blending of Pingshuo Coal Based on Unit Adaptability and Sulfur Retention by Ash of 1 000-MW Ultra-Supercritical Units

Abstract:Blended Pingshuo coal and Indonesia coal and blended Pingshuo coal and Mongolia coal are burned in a 1000-MW ultra-supercritical unit in a power plant for comparison with conventional Indonesia coal to analyze the adaptability and sulfur-fixing rate of the unit.The unit shows good adaptability with normal coal pulverizing system and normal main steam and reheat steam parameters after the Pingshuo coal is blended in.The slagging condition is improved significantly,and the pulverizing electric consumption per calorific value is decreased,but the boiler efficiency is decreased slightly with the flue gas loss and the mechanism inadequacy burning loss increases.The sulfur-fixing rate of Pingshuo coal and Mongolia coal blending is 9.23 percent,which is significant for decreasing the emission concentration of SO2 and the desulphurization cost.However,the Pingshuo coal and Indonesia coal blending shows almost no sulfur-fixing effect.The sulfur-fixing rate by power plant tests is much lower than that by lab tests because the furnace temperature is much higher than the decomposition temperature of CaSO4.

Abstract:The ultra-supercritical (USC) double-reheat technology is an immediate area of research focus in China, since the thermal efficiency of USC double-reheat unit is higher than the USC single-reheat unit. The parameters and capacity of USC double-reheat unit in China have made major breakthroughs, and the thermal efficiency of the units are as high as 47–48%, which is the highest in the world. USC double-reheat boiler is one of the most important devices for USC double-reheat unit, and the design concept and precision have a vital effect on the operation of boiler and power station. The most difficult and important factors in the design of double-reheat boiler are the layout of heating surface and the steam temperature regulation method. Therefore, this work summarizes the arrangement of heating surface and temperature regulation method of existing double-reheat boiler in China. It is hoped that the work will set a benchmark for the development of double-reheat boiler and the future 700 °C power generation unit in the world.

Abstract:The necessity and significance to introduce Ultra-supercritical (USC) parameters on 600 MW unit in China was discussed in this paper. Based on the analysis of state-of-the-art, manufacturing capacity, design capacity and ability to provide main auxiliary machines, the fundamental conditions for development of USC and supercritical units in China was discussed objectively. In addition, the extensive technical and economic comparison was taken between the 600 MW USC and supercritical units. From the aspects of the localization degree and reliability of the equipment, the site and transportation conditions, and the power grid operation requirement, the advantages of 600 MW USC unit over 1 000 MW units was presented. Lastly, some suggestions were proposed on how to promote 600 MW USC unit in China.

Abstract:As the world's largest consumer of total primary energy and energy from coal, and the largest emitter of carbon dioxide (CO2), China is now taking an active role in controlling CO2 emissions. Given current coal use in China, and the urgent need to cut emissions, ‘clean coal’ technologies are regarded as a promising solution for China to meet its carbon reduction targets while still obtaining a considerable share of energy from coal. Using an economy-wide model, this paper evaluates the impact of two existing advanced coal technologies – coal upgrading and ultra-supercritical (USC) coal power generation – on economic, energy and emissions outcomes when a carbon price is used to meet China's CO2 intensity target out to 2035. Additional deployment of USC coal power generation lowers the carbon price required to meet the CO2 intensity target by more than 40% in the near term and by 25% in the longer term. It also increases total coal power generation and coal use. Increasing the share of coal that is upgraded leads to only a small decrease in the carbon price. As China's CO2 intensity is set exogenously, additional deployment of the two technologies has a small impact on total CO2 emissions.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to understand the benefits that one can achieve for large-scale supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) coal-fired power plants. The aspects of energy environment and economy of 1000 MW S-CO2 coal-fired power generation system and 1000 MW ultra-supercritical (USC) water-steam Rankine cycle coal-fired power generation system are analyzed and compared at the similar main vapor parameters, by adopting the neural network genetic algorithm and life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. Multi-objective optimization of the 1000 MW S-CO2 coal-fired power generation system is further carried out. The power generation efficiency, environmental impact load, and investment recovery period are adopted as the objective functions. The main vapor parameters of temperature and pressure are set as the decision variables. The results are concluded as follows. First, the total energy consumption of the S-CO2 coal-fired power generation system is 10.48 MJ/kWh and the energy payback ratio is 34.37%. The performance is superior to the USC coal-fired power generation system. Second, the resource depletion index of the S-CO2 coal-fired power generation system is 4.38 µPRchina,90, which is lower than that of the USC coal-fired power generation system, and the resource consumption is less. Third, the environmental impact load of the S-CO2 coal-fired power generation system is 0.742 mPEchina,90, which is less than that of the USC coal-fired power generation system, 0.783 mPEchina,90. Among all environmental impact types, human toxicity potential HTP and global warming potential GWP account for the most environmental impact. Finally, the investment cost of the S-CO2 coal-fired power generation system is generally less than that of the USC coal-fired power generation system because the cost of the S-CO2 turbine is only half of the cost of the steam turbine. The optimal turbine inlet temperature T5 becomes smaller, and the optimal turbine inlet pressure is unchanged at 622.082°C/30 MPa.

Abstract:China has become the primary energy consumer in the world, consuming 48.2% of the world's coal in 2010. Of this percentage, 48.0% of China's coal consumption is used by the power generation industry, which causes unavoidable environmental problems in the country. This paper presents complete life cycle modeling and a comparative assessment of current clean coal power generation technologies in China, including a state-of-the-art commercial ultra super-critical system. In this study, a life cycle assessment (LCA) is adopted for energy and environment analysis, followed by a brief economic discussion. Incorporating up-to-date data and country-speciﬁc situations, the present work covers all up-stream stages of the electricity life cycle before ﬁnal consumption: coal mining, coal transportation, and coal power generation. The modeling results show that ultra super-critical systems (USC) have the highest life cycle energy efficiency due to the highest net generating efficiency and the lowest plant auxiliary power consumption among the cases examined. The global warming potential (GWP) scores show reverse dependencies of net generating efficiency. An integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) was demonstrated to be the cleanest technology and has the lowest scores in most of the life cycle impact categories, in particular in acidification potential (AP) and photo-oxidant formation potential (POCP). IGCC ranks as the highest in capital costs due to its complexity, while USC and super-critical systems are among the lowest in capital cost because of their commercialization in China. Evaluation of coal power generation combined with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) shows that the CCS technologies can reduce the total life cycle CO2 emission from coal power plants substantially, although higher levels of CO2 are generated from the extra energy consumption by the CCS.

Abstract:In the coming years, global electricity generation will largely be carried out using coal as fuel (coal generation). Certain European countries, the United States, Canada, and Japan are trying to cut down the number of coal-fired power units with their complete disposal by 2030. At the same time, the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, mainly China and India, are extensively developing a technology for the coal generation of steam at ultra supercitical (USC) conditions, which improves the efficiency of electricity generation and reduces harmful atmospheric emissions. The world power industry presently uses steam conditions of approximately 30 MPa and 610/620°C. The efficiency is as high as 47%. An overview is presented of the designs of USC coal-fired power boilers from the largest foreign manufacturers of boiler equipment in Europe (Alstom), Japan (Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries), and China (Harbin Boiler Co., Ltd, Dongfang Boiler Co., Ltd, and Shanghai Boiler Works, Ltd.). Russia ranks tenth in the world as to the total coal-fired power generation. The percentage of coal-fired generation in Russia was approximately 13.5% in 2016. The development of engineering solutions for the USC power unit was undertaken in Russia at the beginning of the 21st century. Boiler equipment manufacturers worked out projects of boilers designed to operate on various coal types for a 660-MW power unit. The construction of the USC power unit prototype requires joint efforts of the government, power engineers, metallurgists, research organizations, and equipment manufacturers.

Abstract:Based on the primary energy characteristics of China,the current status and future development of clean coal technologies,including large-scale ultra-super-critical(USC)power generators,flue gas cleaning,circulating fluidized-bed combustion(CFBC),integrated gasification combined cycle(IGCC)technology,and coal washing are analyzed in details.It can be concluded that,in the short term,USC generation with flue gas cleaning and CFBC will be the two major clean coal technologies in China.However,IGCC,oxy-fuel combustion(especially pressurized oxy-fuel combustion),and CO2 capture and storage are of great potential and are worth developing in the long term.

Abstract:The double-carbon goal proposal has made it imperative for China's power industry to address the urgent issue of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants and promoting their clean and efficient use. A new approach to achieving peak-shaving and improving grid stability is the combination of carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities with coal-fired power plants, which offers a strategic solution for mitigating climate change. Nonetheless, the viability of CCS retrofitting for coal-fired power plants in China hinges on its economic feasibility. The technical characteristics, economic analysis, and policy implications of clean coal-fired power plant equipped with CCS (CCP-CCS) technologies are evaluated in the paper. A comparison of the characteristics of different clean coal power generation technologies, including capacity, efficiency, coal consumption, and environmental performance, is conducted. The paper analyzes the economic feasibility of four typical clean coal power generation technologies, namely Supercritical (SC), Ultra-supercritical (USC), Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC), and Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB), both with and without CCS, using the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) model. Financial parameters, investment parameters, operation and maintenance parameters, tax parameters, and capacity parameters are all considered in the LCOE model. The results indicate: (1) If CCS is not installed, the LCOE of USC power plants is the lowest at 0.37 yuan/kWh, while the LCOE of IGCC power plants is the highest at 0.44 yuan/kWh. (2) If CCS is installed, the LCOE of CFB units is the highest at 0.74 yuan/kWh, while the LCOE of USC units is the lowest at 0.60 yuan/kWh. (3) In sensitivity analysis, coal prices have the most significant impact on LCOE, followed by expected annual operating hours, while the cost of carbon capture equipment is the least sensitive. (4) The cost of retrofitting CCS on clean coal-fired power plants (CCP) is currently high, with an LCOE increase of around 40 to 70%, which is comparable to that of renewable energy electricity. This paper presents policy recommendations, including preferential loans, tax incentives, and R&D funding, to promote the development of CCP in China based on the economic analysis results and challenges faced by CCP. Additionally, the paper proposes relevant policy implications such as preferential loan policies, a diversified financing system, R&D and innovation, and the establishment of a carbon trading market for CCS in China to provide practical guidance for the promotion of CCP-CCS technologies in China.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The Chinese Government has issued a series of documents to explain China's control over the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission. One of the major tasks is to develop higher efficiency coal fired power plant, compared with current running power plant. In this paper, we aim to explore the roadmap to reach the efficiency limit for coal fired power plant using supercritical carbon dioxide cycle (sCO 2 cycle). Referenced to Carnot cycle, the proposed roadmap is to increase the cycle efficiency by elevating average heat absorption temperature ( T ave, h ) and lowering average heat release temperature ( T ave, l ). In contrast to recompression cycle (RC), tri-compression cycle (TC) is introduced. Due to the increased T ave,h , TC achieves the second largest contribution for efficiency increment, followed by the reheating technique. Then, TC, double reheating (DRH) and intercooling (IC) are integrated as TC + DRH + IC in the power plant. To completely absorb flue gas energy over entire temperature range of (1500 ∼ 120) °C. A top cycle and a bottom cycle are connected for cascade utilization of flue gas energy. Overlap energy utilization is further utilized to fill the efficiency gap between top and bottom cycles. The proposed cycle also integrates the module boiler design to suppress the pressure drop penalty, and the flue gas recirculation to keep the heater surface temperature in an accepted level. A numerical model is developed for the comprehensive sCO 2 cycle. At the main vapor parameters of 35 MPa/630 °C, the sCO 2 coal fired power plant reaches the net power generation efficiency of 51.03%, which is higher than 48.12% for a supercritical water-steam power plant at the same capacity. Such efficiency improvement saves 175.2 kilotons of coal and reduces 396.4 kilotons of CO 2 emission for 1000 MW capacity in a fascial year. Our work provides the guideline for the design and operation of large scale sCO 2 coal fired power plant.

Abstract:Japan is one of the most advanced countries in the development and application of Ultra-supercritical (USC) technology, and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) is one of major manufacturers for USC boilers in Japan. The technical features and operations of unit 1# 600 MW USC boiler in Shin Isogo Power Station was introduced in this paper, which is of the highest steam parameters in Japan. Typically, the boiler is of single reheater and sliding pressure operation, besides, the tower type design saves construction area, for certain amount of convective heating surfaces are arranged inside the furnace and it also reduces the resistance along the gas conduct. Parallel gas conducts are designed to adjust the superheating/reheating temperature, meanwhile, the surrounding air injected upwards to prevent water-wall from high temperature corrosion and the efficient low-NOx burner and modular boiler installation are also utilized in this scheme. The materials selection is in accordance with the features of USC boilers. The practical operation shows that the efficiency, pollutant emission control and liability are improved greatly.
Experimental Study of Heat Transfer Characteristics in a Coal-Fired Test Facility under Advanced Ultra-Supercritical Conditions

Abstract:The development of high parameter, large capacity, coal-fired utility boilers with improved performance, based on the operation and design experience of the current parameter level, is essential. In addition, the combination of theoretical algorithms and practical experimental data is of great significance for research into utility boilers. In this study, an experiment to observe the heat transfer characteristics of heating surfaces was conducted under advanced ultra-supercritical (A-USC) conditions on a coal-fired experiment platform with a coal feed capacity of 0.3 MWth. Four repeated experiments were performed to verify the reliability of the experimental data, the maximum relative error of all the experimental data was less than 7%, which indicates steady combustion performance and good repeatability. Significant heat transfer enhancement and deterioration was demonstrated and analyzed at the superheater near the pseudo-critical region at a pressure of 36 MPa. Outside of the pseudo-critical region, the heat transfer coefficients experienced continuous and smooth variation with changes in temperature. A distributed parameter model for temperature prediction was established based on the mass, momentum, and energy conservation law through the discretization of time and space. The results indicated that predicted temperatures were in good agreement with the experimental data. For the top and bottom furnace, the correlation by Mokry et al. was consistent with the experimental data. The correlations of Jackson et al., Swenson et al., and D.B et al. were used for accurate temperature predictions at the middle of the furnace, superheater, and reheater, respectively.
A U.S.‒China Coal Power Transition and the Global 1.5 °C Pathway

Abstract:As the world seeks to increase ambition rapidly to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C, joint leadership from the world's largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters-the United States (U.S.) and China-will be critical to deliver significant emissions reductions from their own countries as well as to catalyze increased international action. After a period of uncertainty in international climate policy, these countries now both have current leadership that supports ambitious climate action. In this context, a feasible, high-impact, and potentially globally catalytic agreement by the U.S. and China to transition away from coal to clean energy would be a major contribution toward this global effort. We undertake a plant-by-plant assessment in the power sector to identify practical coal retirement pathways for each country that are in line with national priorities and the global 1.5 degrees C target. Our plant-by-plant analysis shows that the 1.5 degrees C-compatible pathways may result in an average retirement age of 47 years for the U.S. coal plants and 22 years for Chinese coal plants, raising important questions of how to compare broader economic, employment, and social impacts. We also demonstrate that such pathways would also lead to significant emissions reductions, lowering overall global energy-related CO2 emissions by about 9% in 2030 relative to 2020. A catalytic effect from the possibility of other countries taking compatible actions is estimated to reduce global emissions by 5.1 Gt CO2 in 2030 and by 10.1 Gt CO2 in 2045.
Heat Integration and Optimization of Supercritical CO2 Recompression Cycle Coupled with Oxy-Coal Combustion

Abstract:This study proposes a supercritical CO2 recompression cycle based on external oxy-coal combustion. It aims to evaluate and improve the performance of the system guided by energetic and exergetic analyses. The influence of the heat integration of the air separation unit (ASU) on performance is initially assessed and sensitivity analyses of cycle variables are then conducted. The system parameters are thermodynamically optimized using a genetic algorithm. Results show that the net efficiency of the base case is 42.13%. If ASU heat integration is considered, then the net efficiency increases to 45.1%, showing an efficiency increment of 2.97%. The comparison of the layouts reveals that the intercooled reheat cycle has the maximum net efficiency that can reach 47.73% when the optimal inlet and outlet pressures are 40 and 7.6 MPa, respectively. Finally, the proposed optimized system is compared with an ultra-supercritical pulverized coal (USC-PC) plant, and the economic performance is evaluated. Results show that the proposed optimized system is economically suitable, the net efficiency is comparable to that of the USC-PC plant, and the net efficiency with carbon capture is 4.27% higher than that of the USC-PC plant. Abstract:FutureGen,proposed by the US Department of Energy in 2003,is one of the clean coal-fired power generation projects receiving the most attention in the world.However ,in early 2008,the Department of Energy adjusted the project′s contents and objectives.This article studies the restructuring of the project based on latest data and concludes that in addition to the cost and policy reasons that the US authorities has cited for the restructuring of the project,the US government′s prediction that coal would dominate the future energy mix,strong IGCC technical strength and potential and the global IGCC project developments are the main drivers to this restructuring.The article says that the adjustment aims to help US IGCC+CCS technology capture and dominate the market.The article also makes suggestions on the development of ICGG technology in China.
Preliminary Design Assessment of Supercritical CO2 Cycle for Commercial Scale Coal-Fired Power Plants

Abstract:The concept of the supercritical CO2 power cycle has been widely proved to be effective by previous studies. However, more specific system layout and key components design analysis is still imperative to demonstrate the technology feasibility of large scale utility. In the present paper the technology adaption of supercritical CO2 power cycle for commercial scale coal-fired power plant was evaluated in terms of both the whole thermodynamic cycle layout and the preliminary assessment of key components. The effect of several key factors such as turbine inlet parameters, compressor inlet parameters and two split flow ratios were analyzed by an in-house code for the purpose of optimization design of a 300 MW commercial scale coal-fired power plant. Furthermore, the preliminary design assessment of key components such as boiler, turbomachines and compact heat exchangers were performed to demonstrate the technology feasibility of commercial scale utility. The results showed that the proposed cycle can achieve 50.2% net efficiency. However, in order to achieve this high efficiency, the key components should be carefully designed to meet the high standard requirements and coal-fired system integration constraints: For boiler, split flow economizer is required to fully recover the flue gas residual energy with over 500 degrees C. A highly effective compact heat exchangers with pinch temperature as low as 5 degrees C are mandatory. The compressors and turbines are also required to achieve the high industry level with compressors efficiency of 89% and turbines efficiency of 94%.

Abstract:Combined with the development of energy in China during the past 30 years, this paper clarified that high steam parameters ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plants and 1000MW nuclear power plants are the most important method to optimize energy structure and achieve national goals of energy saving and CO2 emission in China. Additionally, requirement of materials technology in high steam parameters USC coal-fired power plants and 1000MW nuclear power plants, current research and major development of relevant materials technology in China were briefly described in this paper.
