Abstract:Glucose concentration is considered an indicator for the diagnosis of diabetes, highlighting the importance of accurate glucose detection. Non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors have been extensively studied for glucose detection applications, with nanocomposites composed of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) demonstrating high catalytic activity. In this study, a nanocomposite material composed of MoS2 and Au NPs (MoS2/Au) was synthesized and employed to construct a non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose biosensor. The detection limit of this sensor was explored, reaching as low as 1 mM. Additionally, compared to MoS2, the MoS2/Au nanocomposite exhibited a higher linear correlation coefficient and sensitivity, with a linear range of 1-25 mM and a sensitivity of 417.556 μA mM-1 cm-2. The sensor demonstrated excellent performance within the range of human blood glucose concentrations, showing potential for real-time monitoring and precise measurement of glucose levels. Furthermore, it exhibited good stability and reproducibility. These findings indicate the potential applications of MoS2/Au in biosensors and immunoassays.

Abstract:The molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets supported Au-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized using a facile thermal co-reduction method. The Au-Pd/MoS2 nanocomposites showed good electrocatalytic activities toward the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in neutral solution and the oxidation of glucose in alkaline solution, attributed to the synergistic effects of the Au-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles and MoS2 nanosheets. The fabricated non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors exhibited the linear responses of H2O2 and glucose in the concentration ranges of 0.8 mu M-10 mM and 0.5-20 mM with the detection limits of 0.16 mu M and 0.40 mM (S/N= 3), respectively, together with good stability and reproducibility. The Au-Pd/MoS2 nanocomposites provide new potential materials for the development of other non-enzymatic sensors. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A newly developed nonenzymatic eletrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for the determination of glucose using the Au-HS/SO3H-PMO (Et) nanocomposites is demonstrated. Introduction of Au in periodic mesoporous organosilic (PMO) leads to the strengthening of electrocatalytic performance. As a new platform in glucose analysis, the resultant sensor shows a linear range from 0.10μM to 1.0mM (R=0.9999) with a detection limit of 2.5×10−8M and a sensitivity of 6.45×102μA mM−1 cm−2. Moreover, the proposed sensor exhibited the excellent reproducibility, stability, and selectivity for the detection of glucose. Furthermore, it is successfully utilized for the determination of glucose in human serum samples with good application potential in biological electrochemistry.

Abstract:Rapid and accurate detection of glucose is of great significance for diabetic management. Highly sensitive glucose sensors promise to achieve noninvasive detection technology, enabling more convenient and efficient means for large-scale screening and long-term dynamic monitoring of diabetes patients. In this work, we demonstrate a sensitive glucose electrochemical biosensor through the synergetic labelling strategy utilizing PbS colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) and Au nanospheres (AuNSs). The PbS CQDs/AuNSs/glucose oxidase (GOx) mixture could be stably immobilized on the carbon electrode surface via the one-step dip-coating method. The electrochemical biosensor employing PbS CQDs/AuNSs/GOx-modified electrode integrates the functions of specific molecule recognition, signal transduction as well as signal amplification. The sensor is capable of transducing the glucose enzyme-catalyzed reaction into significant current signals, exhibiting a good linear response in the glucose concentration range of 0.1 μM—10 mM with the limit of detection being 1.432 nM.

Abstract:Early diagnosis may be crucial for the prevention of chronic diabetes mellitus. For that herein, we prepared a CuS/MoS2 composite for a non-enzymatic glucose sensor through a one-step hydrothermal method owing to the synergetic effect of CuS/MoS2. The surface morphology of CuS/MoS2 was studied by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Cs-corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (Cs-STEM). The crystallinity and surface composition of CuS/MoS2 were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) respectively. The working electrode was prepared from CuS/MoS2 electrocatalyst, and for that dispersed solution of electrocatalyst was used to fabricate the material-loaded glassy carbon electrode (GC). CuS/MoS2 composite shows the viability of electrocatalyst to oxidize glucose in an alkaline solution with sensitivity and detection limit of 252.71 μA mM-1 cm-2 and 1.52 μM respectively. The proposed glucose sensor showed reasonable stability and potential selectivity during electrochemical analysis. Accordingly, the CuS/MoS2 composite has potential as a viable material for glucose sensing in diluted human serum.

Abstract:A novel non-enzyme glucose sensor based on functionalized copper metal–organic framework composite material, AuNPs@MoS2/Cu-MOF, was developed for rapid glucose analysis. Cu-MOF nanomaterial was prepared via a hydrothermal method, followed by the surface loading of core–shell structured AuNPs@MoS2 to synthesize AuNPs@MoS2/Cu-MOF composite material. Consequently, a novel gold nanoparticle @ molybdenum disulfide/copper metal–organic framework (AuNPs@MoS2/Cu-MOF/GCE) non-enzyme glucose sensor was constructed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray powder Diffraction (XRD) was used to verify that the non-enzyme glucose sensor had been constructed effectively. Traditional electrochemical characterization methods were employed to study the electrocatalytic performance of the AuNPs@MoS2/Cu-MOF/GCE sensor and its catalytic oxidation of glucose. The experimental results demonstrated a good linear correlation between the concentration of glucose and the peak current within the range of 0.05–14.85 mM, with a detection limit of 16.7 μM. The AuNPs@MoS2/Cu-MOF/GCE sensor exhibited rapid electrochemical response to glucose (within 0.5 s), along with long-term stability and excellent selectivity. This is because Cu(II) in Cu-MOF can serve as active sites for the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose, while the core–shell structure of AuNPs@MoS2 with excellent conductivity can lower the energy barrier in the reaction, further accelerating this catalytic reaction. The AuNPs@MoS2/Cu-MOF/GCE sensor is cost-effective, easy to operate, and suitable for accurate rapid quantification of glucose.

Abstract:The ZnFe prussian blue analogue [ZnFe(PBA)] was infused with Ti3C2Tx (MXene) denoted as ZnFe(PBA)@Ti3C2Tx and was prepared by an in-situ sonication method to use as a non-enzymatic screen printed electrode sensor. The advantage of non-enzymatic sensors is their excellent sensitivity, rapid detection, low cost and simple design. The synthesized ZnFe(PBA)@Ti3C2Tx was characterized for its physical and chemical characterization by XRD, Raman, XPS, EDAX, and FESEM analysis. It possessed multiple functionalized layers and a cubic structure in the nanohybrid. Further, the sensor was investigated by using electroanalytical studies such as cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry analysis. The enhanced surface area with a cubic structure of ZnFe(PBA) and the excellent electrical response of Ti3C2 nanosheet support the advancement of a non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensor with improved sensitivity of 973.42 µA mM-1 cm-2 with the limit of detection (LOD) of 3.036 µM (S/N = 3) and linear detection range (LDR) from 0.01 to 1 mM.

Abstract:Sulfonated graphene nanosheet/gold nanoparticle (SGN/Au) hybrid was synthesized by electrostatic self-assembly of anionic SGN and positively charged gold nanoparticles. Due to the well-dispersivity of SGN in aqueous solution and its adequate negative charge, Au nanoparticles were assembled uniformly on graphene surface with high distribution. With the advantages of both graphene and Au nanoparticles, SGN/Au hybrid showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards O2 reduction. Furthermore, it provided a conductive and favorable microenvironment for the glucose oxidase (GOD) immobilization and thus promoted its direct electron transfer at the glassy carbon electrode. Based on the consumption of O2 caused by glucose at the interface of GOD electrode modified with SGN/Au hybrid, the modified electrode displayed satisfactory analytical performance, including high sensitivity (14.55 μA mM−1 cm−2), low detection limit (0.2 mM), an acceptable linear range from 2 to 16 mM, and also the prevention from the interference of some species. These results indicated that the prepared SGN/Au hybrid is a promising candidate material for high-performance glucose biosensor.

Abstract:The rapid and accurate assessment of glucose concentration has been demonstrated to play a significant role in human health, such as the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, pharmaceutical research and quality monitoring in the food industry, necessitating further development of the performance for glucose sensor especially at low concentrations. However, glucose oxidase-based sensors suffer from crucial restriction in bioactivity because of their poor environmental tolerance. Recently, catalytic nanomaterials with enzyme-mimicking activity, known as nanozymes, have gained considerable interest to overcome the drawback. In this scenario, we report an inspiring surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for non-enzymatic glucose detection employing ZnO nanoparticles and MoSe 2 nanosheets composite (MoSe 2 /ZnO) as sensing film, featuring desirable advantages of high sensitivity and selectivity, lab-free and low cost. The ZnO was used to specifically recognize and bind glucose, and further signal amplification was realized by incorporating of MoSe 2 owing to its larger specific surface area and favorable bio-compatibility, as well as high electron mobility. These unique features of MoSe 2 /ZnO composite film result in an obvious improvement of sensitivity for glucose detection. Experimental results show that the measurement sensitivity of the proposed sensor could reach 72.17 nm/(mg/mL) and a detection limit of 4.16 μg/mL by appropriately optimizing the componential constitutions of MoSe 2 /ZnO composite. In addition, the favorable selectivity, repeatability and stability are demonstrated as well. This facile and cost-effective work provides a novel strategy for constructing high-performance SPR sensor for glucose detection and a prospective application in biomedicine and human health monitoring.

Nonenzymatic Electrochemical Sensing Platform Based on 2D Isomorphic Co/Ni-Metal-Organic Frameworks for Glucose Detection

Abstract:Two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) crystalline materials possess promising potential in the electrochemical sensing process owing to their tunable structures, high specific surface area, and abundant metal active sites; however, developing MOF-based nonenzymatic glucose (Glu) sensors which combine electrochemical activity and environmental stability remains a challenge. Herein, utilizing the tripodic nitrogen-bridged 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl) benzene (TIB) linker, Co2+ and Ni2+, two 2D isomorphic crystalline materials, including Co/Ni-MOF {[Co (TIB)]·2BF4} (CTGU-31) and {[Ni(TIB)]·2NO3} (CTGU-32), with a binodal (3, 6)-connected kgd topological net were firstly synthesized and fabricated with conducting acetylene black (AB). When modified on a glassy carbon electrode, the optimized AB/CTGU-32 (1:1) electrocatalyst demonstrated a higher sensitivity of 2.198 μA μM-1 cm-2, a wider linear range from 10 to 4000 μM, and a lower detection limit (LOD) value (0.09 μM, S/N = 3) compared to previously MOF-based Glu sensors. Moreover, AB/CTGU-32 (1:1) exhibited desirable stability for at least 2000 s during the electrochemical process. The work indicates that MOF-based electrocatalysts are a promising candidate for monitoring Glu and demonstrate their potential for preliminary screening for diabetes.

Abstract:Cu nanoparticle/graphene oxide/single walled carbon nanotube (CuNP/GO/SWCNT) composites were prepared by a facile electrodeposition method and used for constructing nonenzymatic glucose sensor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy were employed to characterize the morphology and structures of the samples. The electrocatalytic performance of CuNP/GO/SWCNT composites towards glucose oxidation was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and current–time measurements. Electrochemical results indicated that CuNP/GO/SWCNT electrode exhibited a higher electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of glucose than CuNP, CuNP/GO and CuNP/SWCNT electrodes. This was because the GO/SWCNT composite as substrate material not only possessed excellent conductivity, but also provided large surface area for the high loading of the CuNPs. Meanwhile, the good dispersibility, independent and multi-layer structure of CuNP, could enhance the charge-transport properties, and afford more active sites for the catalytic oxidation of glucose. Under the optimized conditions, the sensor showed a high sensitivity of up to 930.07μAmM−1cm−2, with a wide linear range of 1μM to 4.538mM and a low detection limit of 0.34μM (S/N=3). It also exhibited excellent stability, reproducibility, selectivity, and reliable measurement in real human blood samples. All of these excellent properties made the CuNP/GO/SWCNT composite material promising for the development of effective nonenzymatic glucose sensors.

Abstract:With the rapid development of glucose sensor devices in recent years, it is critical to obtain a highly sensitive and low-cost sensing material by a facile method. In this study, 0D/1D heterostructured Au@Cu 2 O/CuO/Cu(OH) 2 with multivalent Cu(I)/Cu(II) was prepared as the efficient electrocatalysts for glucose sensing by using a simple one-pot wet chemical method. The Au@Cu 2 O/CuO/Cu(OH) 2 exhibited a sensitivity of 1024.6 μA mM -1 cm -2 and a detection limit of 0.26 μM toward glucose sensing, which was 1.57 times higher than that of pure Au@Cu 2 O NPs and 123.2 times higher than that of pure Au/Cu(OH) 2 . The excellent performance of Au@Cu 2 O/CuO/Cu(OH) 2 can be attributed to the synergistic effect of excellent charge transport brought by the Cu(OH) 2 nanowire and the rapid mass transfer capability resulted from the multivalent Cu-based oxides during the glucose sensing process. In addition, the obtained Au@Cu 2 O/CuO/Cu(OH) 2 exhibited excellent stability and bending stability toward glucose sensing, revealing its great potential for practical applications in the field of wearable sensors.

Screen-printed electrochemical biosensor based on a ternary Co@MoS2/rGO functionalized electrode for high-performance non-enzymatic glucose sensing

Abstract:In this study, cobalt oxides functionalized MoS2/reduced graphene oxide was synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal approach. Morphology and crystal structure of this ternary nanoarchitecture were characterized through scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. An ultrasensitive non-enzymatic glucose sensor was developed by decorating this ternary nanohybrid on the working electrode of a screen-printed electrochemical sensor. Cycle sweep voltammetry and amperometry were used to study the electro-catalytic activity of the modified working electrode, which demonstrated superior catalytic activity towards glucose oxidation with an extremely low detection limit of 30 nM. Meanwhile, this sensor showed an excellent selectivity in the presence of interfering species such as uric acid, ascorbic acid, etc. Based on the screen-printed technique, enzyme mimic nanomaterials could be easily introduced into portable devices, which opens the way to take non-enzymatic glucose electrochemical sensing towards point-of-care.

Abstract:An amperometric biosensor for sensitive and selective detection of glucose has been constructed by using highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes (Pt-MWCNTs) as sensing interface. The Pt-MWCNTs were synthesized by using the two-step pyrolysis method. This composite shows good electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of glucose in alkaline and thus can be used to selectively detect glucose. We found that detection potential and Nafion amount covered on the Pt-MWCNTs modified glassy carbon electrode had considerable influence on the selectivity for amperometric detection of glucose. Under optimal detection conditions (detection potential of 0.0V versus SCE and 10muL 1.5% Nafion), selective detection of glucose in the glucose concentration range of 1.0-26.5mM (correlation coefficient, >0.999) can be performed. The results demonstrate that the Pt-MWCNTs composite is promising for the fabrication of nonenzymatic glucose sensors.

Abstract:A series of novel bimetallic PtCu nanochains have been synthesized through a water-based mild chemical route, and their compositions (PtxCu1-x) can be conveniently tuned at the mesoscopic scale by a facile dealloying process. These nanomaterials have been characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and elemental analysis. They have different compositions (Pt88Cu12,Pt75Cu25, and Pt50Cu50) but have similar morphology. Electrochemical activity of these nanomaterials is compared to Pt and nanochains of Pt when they are chemically modified onto a glassy Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the sensors made by these PtCu nanomaterials are very sensitive and selective for glucose detection due to the wiring of dispersed crystals, porous nanostructure, clean surface, and synergetic electronic effects of the alloyed atoms. Among them, the modified electrode made of Pt75Cu25 shows the best performance. The superior catalytic activity and selectivity make nanomaterials, via the green synthesis, very promising for applications in direct biosensing of glucose.

Abstract:A novel electrochemical glucose biosensor was developed based on in situ covalent immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) by one-pot chitosan (CS)-incorporated sol–gel process in the presence of Prussian blue deposited multi-walled carbon nanotubes hybrids (PB/MWNTs) using 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (ICPTES) as both a sol–gel precursor and a covalent coupling agent for GOx and CS. The electrode modified with the PB/MWNTs-GOx-CS-ICPTES sol–gel composite film showed good electrical conductivity and effective low-potential electron transfer mediation toward H2O2 reduction attributed to the incorporation of PB/MWNTs. The biosensor exhibited a linear response to glucose in the concentration range from 2.5×10−5 to 1.3×10−3M with a correlation coefficient of 0.9998, a detection limit of 7.5×10−6M, a low response time (10s), good sensitivity and high anti-interference ability. Compared with the control biosensor based on the traditional tetraethoxysilane derived sol–gel composite film, the biosensor showed a similarly small apparent Michaelis–Menten constant of 3.67mM but much higher electrochemical and biosensing stability.

Abstract:It is essential to discover an affordable electrode for the glucose detection application, which can be easily prepared. In this regard, we report a novel non-enzymatic glucose sensor that utilizes a free-standing electrode with a hybrid structure consisting of nanoporous CuZn/CuO nanoparticle (NPC/CuO). This electrode was fabricated through the process of dealloying the Zn 80 Cu 20 precursor alloy and subsequent natural oxidation. We conducted a thorough investigation of the phase structure and morphology evolution. The results revealed that the NPC/CuO composite-based glucose biosensor displayed remarkable electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation, exhibiting a high sensitivity of 2.33 mAcm −2 mM −1 , wide linear range from 0 to 3.5 mM, low detection limit of 2.42 μM, excellent selectivity and suitable stability. These outstanding characteristics were attributed to the combined effect of the electroactive CuO and the nanoporous structure. These findings highlight that NPC/CuO composites have the potential to replace expensive noble metal biosensors in non-enzymatic glucose detection. By leveraging the cooperative effect of the nanostructure and copper oxide, these composites offer promising prospects for future development in this field.

Abstract:Rational design of non-enzymatic nanomaterials that possess the similar functions to natural enzymes holds great promise in chemical and biological molecule detection. In this work, a non-enzymatic electrochemical biosensor for detection of glucose was developed based on poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) grafted UiO-66 metal organic framework decorated with ultrafine platinum nanoclusters (PtNCs). The as-fabricated UiO-66- g -P2VP/PtNCs nanocomposite was then placed on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode to construct non-enzymatic glucose biosensor for electrochemical detection of glucose in alkaline electrolyte. The resulting UiO-66- g -P2VP/PtNCs/ITO modified electrode showed two linear responses over glucose concentration ranging of 0.01–5 mM and 5–18 mM with a low detection limit of 2.18 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the UiO-66- g -P2VP/PtNCs/ITO serving as an electrochemical biosensor was successfully applied to the rapid determination of glucose in human serum sample with a desirable result. Our findings pave the way for design and development of a promising artificial enzyme for the construction of high performance sensing platform.

Abstract:A novel carbon composite was integrated with Au@Pt core–shell nanoparticles (Au@Pt NPs) to construct a sensing interface for enzyme-free electrochemical detection of glucose. As surfactant, graphene oxide (GO) was used to disperse multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). After the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with the mixture of GO and MWCNTs, the Au@Pt NPs were decorated on it. The prepared novel three-dimensional sensor interface was applied to detect glucose without enzyme at a remarkable negative potential (at about −0.013 V vs. Ag/AgCl), demonstrating a low detection limit (4.2 × 10−8 M) and two wide linear range from 5 × 10−8 to 1 × 10−4 M and 1 × 10−4 M to 2.5 × 10−3 M. In addition, the non-enzymatic glucose sensing platform can be realized for practical application.
