Abstract:Compared to extensively studied oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis in alkaline media, development of highly active and stable nonprecious metal catalysts (NPMCs) to replace Pt in acidic electrolytes remains grand challenges. Among currently studied catalysts, the Fe-N-C formulation holds the greatest promise for the ORR in acid. Here, we report a new highly active and stable Fe-N-C catalyst featured with well-dispersed atomic Fe in porous carbon matrix. It was prepared through one single thermal conversion from Fe-doped ZIF-8, a metal–organic framework (MOF) containing Zn2+ and well-defined Fe–N4 coordination. Unlike other Fe-N-C catalyst preparation, no additional tedious post-treatments such as acid leaching and the second heating treatment are required in this work. Notably, an O2-free environment for preparing the Fe-doped ZIF-8 precursor is found to be crucial for yielding uniform Fe distribution into highly porous N-doped carbon matrix. The resulting new Fe-N-C catalyst exhibited exceptionally improved ORR activity with a very high half-wave potential (0.82V vs. RHE) and sufficient potential cycling stability in acid. Opposite to previous observation, the highly active Fe-N-C catalyst is in the absence of any graphitized nanocarbons, which would lead to a new discussion in the field for understanding the role of carbon during the ORR electrocatalysis.

Abstract:A highly efficient metal-free N-doped carbon electrocatalyst toward oxygen reduction was obtained by one-pot pyrolysis of a single Zn( II )-MOF with mixed azolate and terephthalate ligands, demonstrating E 1/2 of 0.88 V ( vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH, and 0.79 V ( vs. RHE) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . It represents one of the best metal-free N-doped carbon electrocatalysts for the acidic ORR.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays an important role in renewable energy storage and conversion systems such as polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. However, design of high-performance cathode electrocatalysts is still required to speed up the sluggish kinetics of ORR. In this work, we develop a facile strategy to synthesize hierarchically porous N-doped carbon nanosheet networks with ultrafine encapsulated Fe3C and Fe-Nx for ORR by consideration of thermodynamic (intrinsic and support effect) and kinetic (diffusion effect) parameters. The synthetic process is straightforward and sustainable and the hierarchically porous materials can be synthesized directly starting from raw materials and without any additional template. The as-designed catalyst exhibits excellent ORR catalytic performance in both acidic and basic media with much positive half-wave potential and good stability, which is comparable to commercial Pt/C. The excellent ORR performance may result from highly active Fe-Nx sites and ultrafine encapsulated Fe3C, and the hierarchically porous nanosheet structure for accelerating mass diffusion and increasing exposure of the active site. This work provides a facile strategy for rational design and synthesis of highly active, hierarchically porous non-precious metal electrocatalysts.

Abstract:This study demonstrates a special ultrathin N-doped graphene nanomesh (NGM) as a robust scaffold for highly exposed Fe-N4 active sites. Significantly, the pore sizes of the NGM can be elaborately regulated by adjusting the thermal exfoliation conditions to simultaneously disperse and anchor Fe-N4 moieties, ultimately leading to highly loaded Fe single-atom catalysts (SA-Fe-NGM) and a highly exposed morphology. The SA-Fe-NGM is found to deliver a superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in acidic media (half-wave potential = 0.83 V vs RHE) and a high power density of 634 mW cm-2 in the H2/O2 fuel cell test. First-principles calculations further elucidate the possible catalytic mechanism for ORR based on the identified Fe-N4 active sites and the pore size distribution analysis. This work provides a novel strategy for constructing highly exposed transition metals and nitrogen co-doped carbon materials (M-N-C) catalysts for extended electrocatalytic and energy storage applications.

Abstract:The asymmetric N, P‐coordinated single‐atomic Fe sites with Fe2P nanoclusters/nanoparticles on porous carbon nanosheets is constructed by a soft‐template self‐sacrificing pyrolysis. Experimental and theoretical analysis reveals that the synergistic effect of P coordination and Fe2P nanoclusters induces asymmetrical electron redistribution of single‐atomic Fe sites andoptimize the absorption strength toward the oxygen reduction reactionintermediates, contributing to the improved activity Disrupting the symmetrical electron distribution of single‐atomic Fe sites is proposed as an effective strategy for improving the intrinsic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein asymmetric N, P‐coordinated single‐atomic Fe sites with Fe2P nanoclusters/nanoparticles on porous carbon nanosheets (FePNC) are constructed by a soft‐template self‐sacrificing pyrolysis. The synchrotron X‐ray absorption spectroscopy confirms the coexistence of FeN3P1 moieties by the coordination of Fe atom with three nitrogen atoms and one phosphorus atom, and a small amount of Fe2P nanoclusters/nanoparticles. Benefiting from the unique asymmetric electronic and geometric configurations, the resultant FePNC catalyst exhibits excellent ORR activity with half‐wave potential of 0.76 V (0.5 m H2SO4) and 0.90 V (0.1 m KOH), and good Zn–air battery performance. Theoretical analysis reveals that the synergistic effect of P coordination and Fe2P nanoclusters induces asymmetrical electron redistribution of single‐atomic Fe sites and thus optimize the absorption strength toward the ORR intermediates, which contribute to the improved ORR activity.

Abstract:The exploration of non-precious metal electrocatalyst with high performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is vital for widespread application of fuel cells. In this study, we presented a rational designed Fe, N-doped graphene nanoribbon/carbon nanotube composite (FeN-uCNT) based on partial longitudinally unzipped MWCNTs with abundant edge defects as a highly active catalyst for ORR. The obtained FeN-uCNT exhibited excellent ORR performance and methanol resistance in alkaline medium. And its mass activity at 1.0V (RHE) can reach up to 1.36Ag−1, equal to that of commercial Pt/C. The ORR current retained 81% after 30,000s durability test at 0.9V. The superiority of graphene carbon defects for improving heteroatom doping level was verified, leading to the increase in the density of active sites and high ORR activity. These results demonstrated the FeN-uCNT a promising candidate for ORR catalyst in fuel cells.
Atomically Dispersed Fe-N-P-C Complex Electrocatalysts for Superior Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:Development of cost-effective electrocatalysts as an alternative to platinum for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of great significance for boosting the applications of green energy devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Here we report a nitrogen and phosphorus tri-doped hierarchically porous carbon supported highly cost-effective, efficient and durable Fe single-site electrocatalyst derived from biomass. Combined aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM, XPS and XAFS measurements and theoretical calculations reveal the atomically dispersed Fe-N-P-C-O complex as the dominant active sites for ORR. This work also shows the design principle for enhancing the ORR activity of single Fe site catalysts with higher Fe charge, which can be manipulated by the coordinated structure in the active centre. Theoretical calculations reveal that the main effective sites are singleN-P-O-Fe-O centers, where the associated P-O-Fe bond can significantly lower the stability of strongly adsorbed O-star and OH star on the catalytically active sites and thus give rise to enhanced ORR performance. The insights reported here open a new avenue for constructing highly efficient molecule-like heterogeneous catalysts in electrochemical energy technologies.
N, F-Codoped Microporous Carbon Nanofibers As Efficient Metal-Free Electrocatalysts for ORR

Abstract:Currently, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mainly depends on precious metal platinum (Pt) catalysts. However, Pt-based catalysts have several shortcomings, such as high cost, scarcity, and poor long-term stability. Therefore, development of efficient metal-free electrocatalysts to replace Pt-based electrocatalysts is important. In this study, we successfully prepared nitrogen- and fluorine-codoped microporous carbon nanofibers (N, F-MCFs) via electrospinning polyacrylonitrile/polyvinylidene fluoride/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PAN/PVDF/PVP) tricomponent polymers followed by a hydrothermal process and thermal treatment, which was achieved for the first time in the literature. The results indicated that N, F-MCFs exhibit a high catalytic activity (E (onset): 0.94 V vs. RHE, E (1/2): 0.81 V vs. RHE, and electron transfer number: 4.0) and considerably better stability and methanol tolerance for ORR in alkaline solutions as compared to commercial Pt/carbon (Pt/C, 20 wt%) catalysts. Furthermore, in acidic media, N, F-MCFs showed a four-electron transfer pathway for ORR. This study provides a new strategy for in situ synthesis of N, F-MCFs as highly efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for ORR in fuel cells.
Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Catalysts by Rational Synthesis of Nanoconfined Maghemite in A Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Framework

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical for electrochemical energy storage and conversion: e.g., in fuel cells and metal air batteries. A major challenge is to develop cost-effective and durable ORR catalysts, to replace the relatively expensive platinum-loaded carbon (PtC) counterparts, particularly for large-scale applications. Despite progress over the past few decades in developing efficient non-precious-metal (NPM) catalysts, such as Fe/N/Cbased materials (the best-known alternatives), most of the reported catalytic activities have yet to match that of PtC. Herein we propose a two-step process for the production of highly efficient NPM catalysts that outperform PtC in alkaline media: (1) a hierarchical porosity of a supporting substrate is generated and optimized in advance, especially to achieve a high total pore volume for rapid mass transfer, and (2) an appropriate amount of NPM precursor is added to the optimized substrate to boost the reduction potential while maintaining the hierarchically porous structure. Such a scheme was successfully applied to a case of nanoconfined maghemite (y-Fe2O3) in a nitrogen-doped graphene framework. The resulting catalyst system surpasses the performance of the equivalent commercial PtC, in terms of a higher reduction potential, a significantly lower peroxide formation ratio, more than tripled kinetic current density, smaller Tafel slope, better durability, etc. The reported catalyst is also among the best of all the existing Fe-based ORR catalysts, indicating the great potential of y-Fe2O3 for ORR in practical applications.

Abstract:Fe-N-C materials as a popular non-Pt group metal (non-PGM) electrocatalysts demonstrated huge potential for replacing Pt-based materials for efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis in acidic media. Herein a metal-organic-framework (MOF)-based dual ligand strategy was proposed to develop advanced Fe-N-C materials with controllable density of Fe-Nx sites and electrochemical active surface area, attributed to the synergistic effect from secondary ligand manipulation and Zn evaporation during pyrolysis. As a result, the optimized catalyst exhibits an ORR half-wave potential of 0.747 V vs. RHE and a long-term stability with only 29 mV negative shift after 3000 potential cycles in 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte. More far-reaching, this MOF-based dual ligand strategy opens a novel avenue to the precise fabrication of efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Rational engineering of simple, economical and durable nonprecious metal electrocatalyst with excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity is crucial for the electrochemical energy conversion devices, such as metal-air batteries and fuel cells. Here, we developed a highly efficient ORR electrocatalyst with rich and well-dispersed Fe-N-x active sites and iron nanocrystals decorated three dimension (3D) porous carbonaceous matrix by a rational designed carbonaceous spheres templated strategy. The fabricated electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding ORR activity with onset potential of 1.0 V and half-wave potential of 0.90 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in alkaline media, which is much better than benchmark PVC. In addition, it presents particularly better performance in terms of superior stability and excellent methanol tolerance capacity. Experimental studies display that the remarkable ORR activity primarily originates from the synergetic effect of rich Fe-N-x active sites, sufficient carbon encapsulated metallic iron nanocrystals and desired meso/microporous structure. What worth to point out is that the facile synthetic technique can be extended to fabricate other low cost highly active transition metal-N-carbon scaffolds ORR electrocatalysts.
In-situ Coupling FeN Nanocrystals with Fe/Fe3C Nanoparticles to N-doped Carbon Nanosheets for Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Hetero-nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon show promising potential application in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) based composite with FeN species and Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon nanosheets (Fe/Fe3C@FeN-Cs) has been successfully synthesized by an in-situ reduction of pre-designed Fe-N-2-O-2 units. Benefit from the compositional and structural synergistic effect, the optimized Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900 displays excellent ORR activity in both acidic (E-1/2 = 0.77 V) and alkaline (E-1/2 = 0.88 V) electrolytes, which are comparable and even superior to the benchmark Pt/C. Impressively, the maximum power density of fuel cell using Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900 as cathode catalyst reaches 408 mW cm(-2). Moreover, the Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900-drived rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) deliver a higher power density (156.8 mW cm(-2)), larger specific capacity (775 mA h g(-1)) and better cycling stability (270 cycles) as compared with the state-of-the-art Pt/C counterpart. The interfacial electron transfer between Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles and neighboring FeN species, as well as the porous carbon architecture contribute to the excellent ORR performance of Fe/Fe3C@FeN-C-900, resulting in the easily adsorption/activation of O-2 and accelerated ORR kinetics because of the fast mass transfer. The COF-derived synthetic strategy inspires new perspectives to develop hetero-nanoparticle composites as high-efficiency ORR electrocatalysts for the economical-practical energy conversion devices.

Abstract:Developing efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is deemed important and valuable for fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Various metal-free electrocatalysts are highly considered as desirable ORR electrocatalysts due to their enhanced ORR activity and durability. Here, we report a facile, low cost and effective strategy to synthesize metal-free N, P-codoped porous carbon fibers (NPCF) via the simple pyrolysis of inexpensive polypyrrole as nitrogen source and phosphoric acid as phosphorus source. Results indicate that the NPCF-2 catalyst with large surface area (1569.3 m(2) g(-1)) and high density of graphitic N, pyridinic N and P-C bonding exhibits outstanding alkaline ORR catalytic activity, long-term durability and high methanol tolerance, which is ascribed to the homogenous distribution of nitrogen and phosphorus atoms in the carbon fibers, rich micro/mesoporous structure and the synergistic effects of nitrogen and phosphorus atoms around the adjacent carbon atoms. Especially, the active graphitic N, pyridinic N and P atoms in the carbon fibers can regulate the electronic structure of carbon atoms, making the nitrogen, phosphorus and adjacent carbon atoms as active sites to promote ORR performance. This work provides a simple scalable and low-cost approach to produce metal-free N, P-codoped porous carbon as effective alternative to Pt-based electrocatalysts. Single Fe Atoms Anchored by Short-Range Ordered Nanographene Boost Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Acidic Media

Abstract:The development of efficient and stable single-atom electrocatalysts with earth-abundant metals have emerged as a promising alternative to the costly Pt-based nanomaterials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we synthesize a highly efficient electmcatalyst with single Fe atoms anchored by N-doped short-range ordered carbon loading on 2 D reduced graphene oxide (RGO). Unlike the highly graphitized carbon materials in previous ORR catalysts, in which the diffusion of oxygen molecules (similar to 3.46 angstrom) are blocked by long carbon chains and small interlayer spacing (similar to 3.4 angstrom), it is found that the Fe/N-doped nanographene possesses large interlayer spacing (>4 angstrom) and short carbon fragments in one layer. The unique nanographene structure in nanoscale can facilitate the transport of oxygen molecules to the active sites of atomically dispersed FeN4 and FeN5. In acidic media for ORR, as-prepared Fe-1-N-NG/RGO catalyst exhibited half-wave potential (E-1/2) of 0.84 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, and the loss of E-1/2 is less than 5 mV during 15,000 potential cycles.

Abstract:N‐doped carbon‐based materials have been regarded as promising alternatives to Pt‐based electrocatalysts for the four‐electron (4e‐) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is an important electrochemical reaction for the polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Here, we report a N‐doped graphene and N‐doped carbon nanoparticles integrated composite electrocatalyst by a multi‐step acid etching plus annealing method. Despite the low N‐doping level, the material exhibits efficient 4e‐ ORR activity with an onset potential of 0.932 V, a half‐wave potential of 0.814 V, and a limiting current density of 5.3 mA cm‐2 in 0.1 M KOH solution. We demonstrate that the promoted 4e‐ ORR activity is attributed to the special 2D‐0D integrated structure for exposing massive active sites, the favorable porous structure facilitating the H2O transfer dynamics, and the high content of oxygen‐containing C‐O‐C species and the increased intrinsic carbon defects for additional active sites. A "decomposition and recrystallization" mechanism is proposed for the formation of N‐doped graphene.

Porous Fe, Co, and N-co-doped Carbon Nanofibers As High-Efficiency Oxygen Reduction Catalysts

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an important reaction in fuel cells. Designing electrocatalysts with outstanding performance is always the key to renewable-energy technologies for fuel cells. Herein, we demonstrate the Fe, Co, and N co-doped porous carbon nanofibers (FeCo/N-C CNFs) as a novel high-performance electrocatalyst for ORR. The synthesis method of this electrocatalysts material is very simple via high-temperature calcination pyrolysis of zinc, cobalt bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-coated electrospun polyacrylonitrile fibers. In alkaline media, the FeCo/N-C CNFs shows a Pt-like ORR performance. The FeCo/N-C CNFs catalysts exhibit excellent performance with an onset potential of 0.99 V and a half-wave potential of 0.83 V in 0.1 M KOH solution, which is similar to those of 20 wt% Pt/C catalysts. Meanwhile, regarding long-term durability and methanol tolerance, the as-synthesized FeCo/N-C CNF catalysts also outperform commercial Pt/C. The unusual catalytic activity mainly from the improvement of electron transfer channels and catalytic sites arise from Fe, Co, and N doping in the porous structure carbon nanofibers.

Abstract:Despite the good progress in developing doped carbon catalysts for oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR), the current metal-free carbon catalysts are still far from satisfactory for large-scale applications of fuel cell. Developing new metal free doped carbon materials with abundance active sites as well as excellent electron transfer and reactant transport rate towards ORR may be a potential solution. Herein, we develop a novel three-dimensional (3D) sulfur-nitrogen co-doped carbon foams (S-N-CF) with hierarchical pore structures, using a convenient, economical, and scalable method. The experimental results have demonstrated that the obtained 3D S-N-CF exhibited better catalytic activity, longer-term stability and higher methanol tolerance than a commercial Pt/C catalyst. Such excellent performances may be attributed to the synergistic effect, which includes high catalytic sites for ORR provided by high S-N heteroatom loading, excellent reactant transport caused by hierarchical pore structures and high electron transfer rate provided by 3D continuous networks. Our results not only develop a new type of catalysts with excellent electrocatalytic performance by a commercially valid route, but also provide useful information for further clarification of the relationship between the microstructures of metal-free carbon materials and catalyst properties for ORR. More importantly, the idea to design hierarchical pore structures could be applied to other catalytic materials and serve as a general strategy for improving the activity of various ORR catalysts.

Abstract:Designing noble metal-free electrocatalysts with novel structure and high performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been long pursued in many electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies but remains a great challenge. Here, a novel zirconium-porphyrin metal-organic framework (MOF) hierarchical nanoframework structure assembled by nanosheets is synthesized. Subsequent pyrolysis and acid etching of such material generates N-doped hierarchical graphitic carbon nanoframework (N-GCF) equipped with M-N-4 units. The N-GCF catalyst demonstrates high ORR activity and stability with large diffusion-limited current density (6.19 mA cm(-2)) and half-wave potential (0.83 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode), which is one of the best carbon-based ORR catalysts in basic electrolyte. Systematic experiments and characterizations reveal that favorable internal spaces and pores, unique hierarchical structure, and numerous nitrogen-doped and metal-N-4 species synergistically contribute to the remarkably enhanced catalytic activity for ORR. This work is expected to expand the toolbox for the design and synthesis of MOF-derived functional materials for electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Designer Fe-N/C-type oxygen reduction electrocatalysts with ultrahigh active-sites density and distinctive physical properties are recently considered to be a new frontier in energy technology. In this work, we creatively propose a new strategy for the controllable synthesis of iron and nitrogen co-doped mesoporous Fe-N/C-type graphene-like carbon nanosheet structures via NaCl template-assisted two-step calcination of iron coordinated with triazine compounds using potassium oxalate as a pore-activator. The synthesized Fe-N/C electrocatalyst exhibits unexpectedly ORR catalytic performance with a half-wave potential of ca. 0.846 V and an onset potential of ca. 1.02 V that compare favourably with the best Pt/C catalyst, but its electrochemical stability and methanol-tolerant property are more excellent. It is found that the unique mesoporous structure, the excellent electro-conductivity and the full exposure of N-doped catalytic sites (e.g., pyridinic-N, graphitic-N and Fe-Nx) of the gained Fe-N/C catalyst can facilitate the transport of electrolyte ions, reaction intermediates and products, maintain continuous electron-transport pathways, and minimize the agglomeration of catalytic sites to further boost the reaction rate and ORR activity. This study provides a new avenue to design high-performance and low-cost nanocarbon-based catalytic materials with dense active sites for some important reactions in new energy devices.
