Abstract:A series of Mg(Ca)Zr-doped acid-base bifunctional mesoporous silica were synthesized to study the impact of the one-step or two-step impregnation method on material structure. The two-step method seems to be a better way to synthesize metal-based functionalized catalyst and their catalytic performance is investigated using deacetalization-Knoevenagel reaction as the probe reaction. The coexisting dual active sites and suitable designing routes endowed highly efficient (Conv. >99.6%, Sel. >99.8%) and robust stability (10 consecutive cycles) of these materials. The present process succeeded in preparing catalysts decorated with acid-base sites by doping acidic and alkali metal species rather than grafting organic groups.

Abstract:One-pot cascade reactions can simplify the synthetic route and reduce the use of solvents and energy. The critical part of the completion of the cascade reaction is the preparation of multifunctional catalysts. In this work, a novel and simple pathway was developed to construct multifunctional catalysts with acidic, basic, and magnetic properties at the same time. Mesoporous silica materials modified with different metal oxides were used as catalytic elements. Microspheres that assembled with catalytic components have a diameter of 150 μm and a specific surface area larger than 400 m2 g-1 and can be used as catalysts for cascade reactions. The yield of the final product in the deacetalization-Knoevenagel reaction is 92%. Microspheres integrated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles have a magnetic susceptibility of 7.2 emu g-1 and can be easily removed from the reaction system by applying an external magnetic field. This multimodule assembly method fully reflects the enormous power of complexity resulting from simplicity. This method provides a reference and practical technical support for the preparation of other multifunctional materials.

Abstract:A green procedure for cascade reactions. An ionic liquid is immobilized on the surface of highly monodispersed silica nanoparticles. This neutral heterogeneous catalyst is used for an acetal hydrolysis/Knoevenagel condensation cascade reaction in water. In contrast to previous works that used heterogeneous acid‐base catalysts, this strategy represent a breakthrough in terms of simplicity, large‐scale synthesis and environmental protection. A new strategy for a catalytic C−C bond forming cascade reaction comprising acetal hydrolysis and Knoevenagel condensation is presented here. The heterogeneous nanocatalyst is prepared by immobilizing an ionic liquid on the surface of highly monodisperse silica nanoparticles. This work is the first example of showing that there is no need to use bifunctional acid‐base catalysts for a cascade reaction including the hydrolysis of benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal to benzaldehyde and the subsequent Knoevenagel condensation of the resulting benzaldehyde with malononitrile. It is shown here that these reactions can proceed smoothly with a mono‐functional heterogeneous catalyst that contains a neutral ionic liquid. It has been proposed that such a neutral ionic liquid can "switch on" to an acidic catalyst in conjunction with water. The selected ionic liquid has potentially biodegradability characteristics, which is an important issue to achieve a sustainable catalyst. The simple procedure for preparing both the ionic liquid and the monodisperse silica nanoparticles provides opportunities for a large‐scale synthesis of the catalyst. This work introduces a breakthrough in the design and synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts for acid/base catalyzed cascade organic reactions.

Abstract:A facile microfluidic approach to prepare chitosan-silica core-shell hybrid microspheres with different pore structures has been developed. The hybrid microspheres showed good performance in mechanics and adsorption and are outstanding and green catalyst supports. Under optimum conditions, the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) is about 1.7 times that of chitosan-silica hybrid microspheres with uniform component distribution for the effective protection of -NH2 provided by the silica shell while the mechanical intensity is about 2 times that of porous chitosan microspheres. Furthermore, when the adsorbed Cu(II) is reduced to Cu(I), the chitosan-silica supported Cu(I) will be an outstanding catalyst for azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction and the reaction can complete in water within 3 h at room temperature. The catalyst was easy to be recovered just through sedimentation by gravity or filtration. Further, the chitosan-silica supported catalyst can be reused many times without losing its activity and it can be reproducible when the catalytic activity decreases. The whole process is green, environmentally friendly and atom economic.

Abstract:The rational design and precise synthesis of multifunctional hybrid nanostructures with a tailored active core and a large, dendritic, modified mesoporous structured shell can promote catalysis, energy storage, and biological applications. Here, an oil-water biphase stratification coating strategy has been developed to prepare monodisperse magnetic dendritic mesoporous silica core-shell structured nanospheres. These sophisticated Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @dendritic-mSiO 2 nanospheres feature large dendritic open pores (2.7 and 10.3 nm). Significantly, the silica shells can be converted into dendritic mesoporous aluminosilicate frameworks with unchanged porosity, a Si/Al molar ratio of 14, and remarkably strong acidic sites, through a post-synthesis approach. In addition, the resultant magnetic dendritic mesoporous aluminosilicate nanospheres exhibit outstanding properties and promising application in phosphate removal from wastewater.

Abstract:Alumina supports have long played an essential role in the field of catalysis, but the traditional alumina must be improved due to its limitations in terms of its physicochemical properties. Herein, using structure-directing agents, the bayberry-like hollow microsphere alumina supports with a hierarchical structure were hydrothermally synthesised from inexpensive raw materials. The surface of the hollow microsphere alumina is a shell structure with plush protuberance formed by rearrangement and self-assembly of spindle-like nanoclusters. In addition to having a large specific surface area, the microspheres also possess suitable surface acid-base sites. The KMo/Al2O3 catalyst for the hydrogenation of CS2 to CH3SH was prepared by loading the active component potassium and molybdenum (KMo). The characterization and catalytic performance of catalysts indicate that the hollow microsphere alumina supports can not only improve the dispersion of the active component KMo on its surface but also increase the Mo coordination unsaturated sites on the surface of catalysts, which is beneficial to the activation of CS2 and the improvement of CH3SH selectivity. This research can be used as both a theoretical basis and a practical guide for the reasonable design of novel alumina materials and high-performance methanethiol catalysts.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica can be used as a nanoreactor for liquid−liquid biphase reaction without any phase transfer reagent and organic cosolvent. High conversions (up to 89%) are achieved with low catalyst loading. This is attributed to the amphiphilic mesochannels, which can provide suitable accommodations for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of hollow/yolk-shell mesoporous structures with catalytically active ordered mesoporous shells can infuse new vitality into the applications of these attractive structures. In this study, we report that hollow/yolk-shell structures with catalytically active ordered mesoporous aluminosilica shells can be easily prepared by using silica spheres as the silica precursors. By simply treating with a hot alkaline solution in the presence of sodium aluminate (NaAlO(2)) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), solid silica spheres can be directly converted into high-quality hollow mesoporous aluminosilica spheres with perpendicular pore channels. On the basis of the proposed formation mechanism of etching followed by co-assembly, the synthesis strategy developed in this work can be extended as a general strategy to prepare ordered mesoporous yolk-shell structures with diverse compositions and morphologies simply by replacing solid silica spheres with silica-coated nanocomposites. The reduction of 4-nitrophenol with yolk-shell structured Au@ordered mesoporous aluminosilica as the catalyst has clearly demonstrated that the highly permeable perpendicular pore channels of mesoporous aluminosilica can effectively prevent the catalytically active yolk from aggregating. Furthermore, with accessible acidity, the yolk-shell structured ordered mesoporous aluminosilica spheres containing Pd yolk exhibit high catalytic activity and recyclability in a one-pot two-step synthesis involving an acid catalysis and subsequent catalytic hydrogenation for desired benzimidazole derivative, which makes the proposed hollow ordered aluminosilica spheres a versatile and practicable scaffold for advanced catalytic nanoreactor systems.

Abstract:Mesoporous aluminosilicates are promising solid acid catalysts. They are also excellent supports for transition metal catalysts for various catalytic applications. Synthesis of mesoporous aluminosilicates with controllable particle size, morphology, and structure, as well as adjustable acidity and high hydrothermal stability, is very desirable. In this work, we demonstrate the scalable synthesis of Al-SBA-15 microspheres with controllable physicochemical properties by using the microfluidic jet-spray-drying technology. The productivity is up to similar to 30 g of dried particles per nozzle per hour. The Al-SBA-15 microspheres possess uniform controllable micron sizes (27.5-70.2 mu m), variable surface morphologies, excellent hydrothermal stability (in pure steam at 800 degrees C), high surface areas (385-464 m(2)/g), ordered mesopore sizes (5.4-5.8 nm), and desirable acid properties. The dependence of various properties, including particle size, morphology, porosity, pore size, acidity, and hydrothermal stability, of the obtained Al-SBA-15 microspheres on experimental parameters including precursor composition (Si/Al ratio and solid content) and processing conditions (drying and calcination temperatures) is established. A unique morphology transition from smooth to wrinkled microsphere triggered by control of the Si/Al ratio and solid content is observed. The particle formation and morphology-evolution mechanism are discussed. The Al-SBA-15 microspheres exhibit high acid catalytic performance for aldol-condensation reaction between benzaldehyde and ethyl alcohol with a high benzaldehyde conversion (similar to 56.3%), a fast pseudo-first-order reaction rate (similar to 0.1344 h(-1)), and a high cyclic stability, superior to the commercial zeolite acid (H-ZSM-5). Several influencing factors on the catalytic performance of the obtained Al-SBA-15 microspheres are also studied.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica SBA-15 is shown to be a very efficient alternative to phase transfer catalyst salts for two-phase nucleophilic substitutions. The two-phase reaction can efficiently take place in the absence of PTCs. The high catalytic activity and reaction rates can be attributed to the amphiphilic and negatively charged surface of SBA-15 as well as the rapid ingress of the reactants and egress of the products.

Abstract:Mesoporous aluminosilica hollow nanospheres were prepared easily, which possess very strong acid site. The heterogeneous catalyst can be utilized in both intramolecular aza-Michael addition cyclization and intermolecular Diels-Alder reaction. The catalyst could be easily recovered and reused. Furthermore, the catalyst could be used in continuous flow chemistry for the uninterrupted synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1 H )-ones, which disclosed the potential application of the present solid catalyst in both academic and industrial syntheses. In addition, the catalyst could be recovered and reused at least 7 times without obvious loss of activity.

Abstract:Metal-zeolite composites with metal (oxide) and acid sites are promising catalysts for integrating multiple reactions in tandem to produce a wide variety of wanted products without separating or purifying the intermediates. However, the conventional design of such materials often leads to uncontrolled and non-ideal spatial distributions of the metal inside/on the zeolites, limiting their catalytic performance. Here we demonstrate a simple strategy for synthesizing double-shelled, contiguous metal oxide@zeolite hollow spheres (denoted as MO@ZEO DSHSs) with controllable structural parameters and chemical compositions. This involves the self-assembly of zeolite nanocrystals onto the surface of metal ion-containing carbon spheres followed by calcination and zeolite growth steps. The step-by-step formation mechanism of the material is revealed using mainly in situ Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction and ex situ electron microscopy. We demonstrate that it is due to this structure that an Fe2O3@H-ZSM-5 DSHSs-showcase catalyst exhibits superior performance compared with various conventionally structured Fe2O3-H-ZSM-5 catalysts in gasoline production by the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. This work is expected to advance the rational synthesis and research of hierarchically hollow, core-shell, multifunctional catalyst materials.

Abstract:The emergence of porous liquids (PLs) opened opportunities to form unique antagonistic systems capable of fulfilling cascade reactions promoted by incompatible active sites in one pot, which is a long-term challenging subject in catalysis. Herein, unique bifunctional type III PL-based systems were facilely fabricated via assembly of zeolite nanosheets with ionic liquids. Rational structural design afforded PLs that feature high zeolite concentration, stable dispersion after 2 years, abundant cavity distribution, and involvement of antagonistic groups (acid and base sites) in separated and active form via steric hindrance control and electronic repulsion regulation. These unique properties worked cooperatively to fulfill the cascade deacetalization-Knoevenagel/Aldol condensation in one pot with superior catalytic efficiency outperforming the traditional systems. The key to success lies in the formation of bifunctional composites, transformation of zeolite from heterogeneous to homogeneous via surface modification, and rapid mass transfer ensured by the rigid porous architecture.
