Abstract:•China wind and solar energy in 2050 is expected to increase by 4–8 times.•Carbon emissions factor is expected to decrease by more than 30% in 2050.•CO2 reductions in 2050 by wind and solar energy are expected to be 530–570 MtCO2.•VRE Intermittency increases electricity cost and reduces coal generation efficiency.•Intermittency could reduce VRE deployment by more than 10% (wind) and 15% (solar).
