Abstract:The development of polymer film with large electrical displacement is essential for the applications of lightweight and compact energy storage. The dielectric diversity at interface of polymer composite should be addressed to realize the film capacitor with high energy density and dielectric reliability. In this work, poly(vinylidene fluoride- co -chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE)) nanocomposite was incorporated by core–shell nanowire with covalent organic framework (COF) outer coating to alleviate the dielectric mismatch at interface. After the preparation of Ag nanowire through polyol reduction, polyaniline (PANI) and COF layers were sequentially deposited to construct core–shell Ag@polyaniline@covalent organic framework (Ag@PANI@COF) nanowire. According to the unique core–shell architecture, the COF framework is utilized to suppress the remanent polarization while high electrical displacement is preserved by the center Ag nanowire. The maximum energy density of 25.0 J/cm 3 at 425 MV/m is obtained in 0.1 wt% stretched Ag@PANI@COF/P(VDF-CTFE) nanocomposite. The presence of core–shell nanowire depresses the distribution distortion of electric field and the diffusion of charge carriers under high field. This work demonstrates an effective method to develop the polymer film with large electrical displacement, and sheds a light on insightful exploration of interfacial polarized mechanism in polymer dielectric composite.

Abstract:Flexible nanodielectric materials with high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss have huge potential applications in the modern electronic and electric industry. Graphene sheets (GS) and reduced-graphene oxide (RGO) are promising fillers for preparing flexible polymer-based nanodielectric materials because of their unique two-dimensional structure and excellent electrical and mechanical properties. However, the easy aggregation of GS/RGO significantly limits the potential of graphene in enhancing the dielectric constant of polymer composites. In addition, the poor filler/matrix nanoscale interfacial adhesion also causes difficulties in suppressing the dielectric loss of the composites. In this work, using a facile and environmentally friendly approach, polydopamine coated RGO (PDA-RGO) and fluoro-polymer functionalized RGO (PF-PDA-RGO) were prepared. Compared with the RGO prepared by the conventional methods [i.e. hydrazine reduced-graphene oxide (H-RGO)] and PDA-RGO, the resulting PF-PDA-RGO nanosheets exhibit excellent dispersion in the ferroelectric polymer matrix [i.e. poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoro propylene), P(VDF-HFP)] and strong interfacial adhesion with the matrix, leading to a low percolation threshold (f(c) = 1.06 vol%) and excellent flexibility for the corresponding nanocomposites. Among the three nanocomposites, the P(VDF-HFP)/PF-PDA-RGO nanocomposites exhibited the optimum performance (i.e. simultaneously having high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss). For instance, at 1000 Hz, the P(VDF-HFP) nanocomposite sample with 1.0 vol% PF-PDA-RGO has a dielectric constant of 107.9 and a dielectric loss of 0.070, showing good potential for dielectric applications. Our strategy provides a new pathway to prepare high performance flexible nanodielectric materials.

Abstract:An all-organic composite system using newly developed PPy nanoclips is developed. The composites have a uniform microstructure due to the unique preparation process. The composites have a very low percolation threshold (<8wt%) and exhibit a high dielectric constant. At room temperature, the composites exhibit a dielectric constant of more than 1000. At temperatures higher than 98°C, the composites exhibit a dielectric constant of about 2000. More interestingly, the high dielectric constant reported here is associated with a loss much smaller than the loss reported for other CDCs using 1-D fillers. It is indicated that a new dielectric relaxation process is induced due to the mixture of PPy with P(VDF-TrFE), whose relaxation time decreases with increasing PPy content. The loss observed in the composites at low temperature including room temperature is mainly determined by this relaxation process rather than the conductivity. If this relaxation process has a strong contribution to the dielectric constant, the widely used percolation formula describing relationship between the dielectric constant and the composite cannot be used.

Abstract:The Co/ZnO core/shell nanoparticles-filled polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composites (0-3 connectivity) are fabricated, in which the core/shell structure for preventing Co particles from agglomeration is prepared by a simple wet chemistry procedure. At the same time, the N,N-di(phosphonomethyl)iminoacetic acid (DPMIAA) is used to modify the core/shell surface. High dielectric permittivity and low leakage current are achieved for the DPMIAA-modified Co/ZnO core/shell nanoparticle-PVDF composite, which shows good homogeneity, no cracks, and fine mechanical flexibility. Abstract:In this work, core-shell structured polydopamine coated silver nanowires (Ag@PDA NWs) and polydopamine coated BaTiO3 nanoparticles (BT@PDA NPs) are accurately prepared. Through embedding Ag@PDA NWs and BT@PDA NPs into the P(VDF-HFP) matrix, flexible nanocomposites with high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss are prepared by constructing three-phase structure. The crystal structure, thermal properties and dielectric properties of the nanocomposites are fully investigated. Compared with two-phase nanocomposites, which are composed by Ag@PDA NWs and P(VDF-HFP), the dielectric constant of the three-phase nanocomposites is improved from 28.1 to 67.9. Additionally, owing to the presence of the polydopamine shell, the nanofillers are homogeneously dispersed and the interfacial adhesion between the nanofillers and polymer matrix is also enhanced, leading to the dielectric loss and electric conductivity of three-phase nanocomposites remain relatively low level. Furthermore, the dielectric properties of the three-phase nanocomposites exhibit weak temperature dependence.

Abstract:Novel polymer nanocomposites were prepared by solution processing with core/shell structured nanoparticles (carbonaceous shell coating on silver cores) as fillers. The organic carbonaceous shells act as interlayers between the Ag cores as well as with the polymer matrix. It is shown that the electrical properties of the interlayers play a dominative role in determining the dielectric behavior of the nanocomposites. Insulating interlayers reduce the tunnel current between neighboring Ag cores by causing potential barriers, endowing the nanocomposites with stable and high dielectric constants and low dielectric loss. Furthermore, the stable dielectric constants of the nanocomposites could be tuned by adjusting the thickness of the interlayers. Increasing the conductivity of the interlayers lowers the potential barriers, making the dielectric behavior of the nanocomposites more similar to that of conventional percolative composites.

Abstract:Flexible dielectric materials with high dielectric constant and low loss have attracted significant attention. In this work, we fabricated novel polymer-based nanocomposites with both homogeneously dispersed conductive nanofillers and ion-conductive nanodomains within a polymer matrix. An unsaturated ionic liquid (IL), 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([VEIM][BF4]), was first coated on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by the mechanical grinding. The ILs coated CNTs were then well dispersed in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix by melt-blending. The ILs on the surface of CNTs were subsequently grafted onto the PVDF chains by electron beam irradiation (EBI). The formed ILs grafted PVDF (PVDF-g-IL) finally aggregated into ionic nanodomains with the size of 20–30 nm in the melt state. Therefore, novel PVDF nanocomposites with both homogenously dispersed CNTs and ionic nanodomains were achieved. Both carbon nanotubes and ionic nanodomains contributed to the enhancement of the dielectric constant of PVDF significantly. At the same time, such homogeneously dispersed CNTs along with the confined ions in the nandomains decreased current leakage effectively and thus led to the low dielectric loss. The final PVDF nanocomposites exhibited high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss and good flexibility, which may be promising for applications in soft/flexible devices.

Abstract:Conductive-filler filled polymer composites have exhibited great potential due to the high dielectric constant that can be reached near the percolation threshold, yet the associated high dielectric loss prohibits wide use in practice. Recently, extensive efforts have been devoted to encapsulating conductive fillers with an insulating shell, with the aim to constrain the dielectric loss; but such efforts also significantly reduce dielectric constant. This dilemma raises the question of whether core-shell structured fillers are ultimately beneficial for the dielectric performance of composites, which is less explored. In this study, we investigate polymer nanocomposites containing a series of 2O3 nanofillers with different shell thicknesses. It shows that the high dielectric constant of percolative composites is contributed by a fast intra-particle polarization and a slow inter-particle polarization. Formation of an insulating shell enables the independent control of the two polarizations, which are otherwise coupled (increasing or decreasing together) in regular percolative composites. By promoting intra-particle polarization and suppressing inter-particle polarization, the core-shell structured nanocomposites can obtain a high dielectric constant and concurrently low dielectric loss, far surpassing the unmodified nanofiller composites. Moreover, the thermal conductivity and high field resistivity are also improved, resulting in a stable and low temperature during operation. This work offers a new paradigm for the design of percolative polymer composite with high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss as well as improved thermomechanical properties.

Abstract:Percolating polymeric composites present enormous potential owing to high dielectric constant (e) which can be realized near the percolation threshold, but the accompanied large loss forbids their extensive use in practice. Great efforts have been devoted to coat conductive particles with an insulating shell for constrained dielectric loss, yet they markedly reduce e. In this work, we explore poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composites with a serial of core@double-shell Al@Al2O3@PDA (polydopamine) nanoparticles with various PDA shell thicknesses. It reveals that the high e of the nanocomposites results from a fast intra-particle polarization and a slow inter -particle polarization. The formation of double -shell enables the independent control of the two polarizations always coupled in traditional percolating composites. Through facilitating intra-particle polarization and repressing inter -particle polarization, Al@Al2O3@PDA/PVDF can achieve a much higher e and lower dielectric loss simultaneously, far exceeding the unmodified Al@Al2O3/PVDF. Moreover, the calculated activation energy of carrier migration in Al@Al2O3@PDA/PVDF is obviously higher than that in untreated nanocomposites, indicating enhanced charge -trapping capability in the core@double-shell nanofiller composites. Abstract:Ferroelectric polymer-based separators, known for their flexibility, ease of synthesis, and modifiability through dopants, are currently under extensive study due its potential applications in electronic devices. PVDF nanocomposites, which combine the strengths of their constituents, currently lead in emerging technologies. This research employs Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) as fillers in the PVDF matrix and investigates their structural, optical, thermal and electrical properties. ZnO NPs synthesized via the combustion method, are being incorporated with varying concentrations (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 wt%), into PVDF nanocomposite (PNC) thin films through a solution casting process. The PNC thin films are characterized using XRD, FTIR, UV–Vis spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Dielectric properties are being explored across a frequency range from 20 to 2 MHz at room temperature, revealing enhanced dielectric constants at lower frequencies, decreasing with frequency due to Maxwell–Wagner interfacial polarization. With increasing frequency, AC conductivity and electric modulus exhibit enhancement. Complex impedance analysis via the Cole–Cole plot indicates a non-Debye type of dielectric relaxation with heightened conductivity. TGA demonstrates improved thermal stability in PNC thin films. These findings suggest the potential application of the prepared PNC thin films as separators in energy storage devices.

Abstract:All-organic nanocomposites using conducting polypyrrole (PPy) nano-clips as fillers and poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (PVDF-CTFE) as the matrix are studied. The nanocomposites with a uniform microstructure were fabricated via a combination of a solution casting and a hot pressing process. Due to the uniform microstructure, the composites exhibit a single glass transition process, whose temperature decreases with increasing PPy content. The dielectric properties of the nanocomposites are systemically studied and analyzed over a wide temperature range from -60 degrees C to 140 degrees C and a broad frequency range from 100 Hz to 1 MHz. The nanocomposites have a low percolation threshold (similar to 7.4 wt%) and exhibit a high dielectric constant and a low dielectric loss. For the composites with 7 wt% of PPy at room temperature, the dielectric constant at 1 kHz is 23 times higher than that of the polymer matrix and the dielectric loss over a broad frequency range is less than 0.4 which is lower than the loss reported in other composites with the composition close to the percolation threshold. It is concluded that mixing PPy with P(VDF-Clth) results in a new relaxation process that dominates the observed dielectric loss at low temperatures including room temperature. It is demonstrated that it is the DC conductivity rather than the dielectric constant that should be used to determine the percolation threshold.

Abstract:Lightweight and printable polymer dielectrics are ubiquitous in flexible hybrid electronics, exhibiting high breakdown strength and mechanical reliability. However, their advanced electronic applications are limited due to their relatively low permittivity, compared to their ceramic counterparts. Here, we report flexible all organic percolative nanocomposites that contain in situ grown conductive polymer networks and dielectric polymer matrix, in which their dielectric properties can be designed and guided from the percolation theory. High dielectric constant of all organic percolative nanocomposites is shown over a broad frequency range under intensive bending cycles, while their thermal stability is attributed to thermally conductive 2D montmorillonite nanosheets. The printable polymer composites with high dielectric performance and thermal stability will find broader interest in flexible hybrid electronics and radio frequency devices.
An Ag Decorated P(VDF-CTFE)/BT@HBP@PDA Nanocomposites with Double-Shell Core Structure for High Dielectric Performance

Abstract:A core-shell inorganic/polymer materials with abundant compositions and multiple shapes have attracted many attentions recently for their harmonious interfacial compatibility, high dielectric performance, and thereby the prospect of applications in energy storage devices. In this work, for improving the interfacial compatibility of in organiclpolymer nanocomposites, the BaTiO 3 (BT) nano-powders are coated successively by using double shell polyamide (HBP) and dopamine (PDA) that is decorated with nanoscale Ag particles. In addition, a P(VDF-CTFE) with high breakdown electric field and proper dielectric permittivity are selected as the polymer matrix, and the flexible 0-3 nanocomposite of Ag decorated P(VDF-CTFE)/BT@HBP@PDA films with ~20μm in thickness are obtained through spin-casting method. The morphologies from FESEM show that the interface between BaTiO 3 and P(VDF-CTFE) has been improved significantly and BaTiO 3 is homogeneous dispersion in the polymer matrix. Consequently, the multicomponent nanocomposites possess the large dielectric permittivity (ε r ~40) and a low dielectric loss tangent (0.1 Hz) since the ionic polarization of BaTiO 3 and the penetration effect of electrons. The result provides an effective way of interfacial improving that through various mutual promoting mediums to achieve high dielectric performance composite materials for their potential applications in energy storage areas.
Realizing enhanced dielectric and mechanical performance of polyvinylidene fluoride/SiC nanocomposites through a bio-inspired interface design

Abstract:The incorporation of high-dielectric permittivity ceramic or conductive fillers into the polymer is an effective method to obtain flexible high-performance dielectric materials, but it is still a huge challenge to achieve a balance between dielectric and mechanical properties. In this paper, we report a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposite based on a novel crab leg-like filler, in which Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) were decorated on the surface of polydopamine (PDA)-coated silicon carbide (SiC) nanowhiskers (NWs). Compared with the nanocomposites with as-received SiC, this PVDF/SiC@PDA@Ag nanocomposites exhibited significantly suppressed dielectric loss (0.03 at 1 kHz) and leakage current. Furthermore, while the dielectric properties were improved, the PVDF/SiC@PDA@Ag nanocomposites also exhibited excellent mechanical and thermal conductivity. Abstract:Polymer composites integrating high dielectric permittivity (ε′) but low loss, large breakdown strength (Eb) and thermal conductivity (TC), have attracted widespread attention in electronic devices and power systems. To simultaneously achieve these properties in graphite nanosheet (GNS)/poly(vinylidene fluoride, PVDF), the GNS were first encapsulated by a layer of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and then incorporated into PVDF, and the resulting PVDF nanocomposites’ dielectric properties and TC were explored in terms of the Al2O3 shell thickness and filler loading. The insulating Al2O3 shell serves as a barrier layer for the formation of leakage current and long-distance electron migration thus resulting in much lower dielectric loss and conductivity of the GNS@Al2O3/PVDF. It effectively mitigates the dielectric mismatch between the filler and host matrix, further introduces more traps that can capture charge carriers, and increases the barrier height for electron detrapping subsequently preventing the growth of electric trees and elevating the Eb. Moreover, the Al2O3 interlayer alleviates both the phonon density state and phonon impedance mismatches between the filler and matrix and facilitates the interfacial phonon transport thus leading to improved TC. The dielectric parameters and TC of the GNS@Al2O3/PVDF can be simultaneously modulated by optimizing the Al2O3′s thickness. This work offers an effective approach for designing and fabricating the polymeric nanodielectrics concurrently integrating high ε′ but low loss, enhanced Eb, and TC for prospective applications in power equipment and microelectronic devices.

Abstract:In this study, metal-semiconductor Zn@ZnO core-shell particles were prepared by the heat treatment of raw Zn powder under air atmosphere, and the prepared Zn@ZnO particles were incorporated into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to obtain high dielectric permittivity polymer. The results indicate that the Zn@ZnO particles remarkably increased the dielectric constant of the PVDF composites compared with the raw Zn/PVDF due to the duplex interfacial polarizations induced by ZnO-Zn interface and ZnO-PVDF interface. Moreover, the dielectric permittivity of the Zn@ZnO/PVDF composites can be further optimized by adjusting the thickness of ZnO shell. The dielectric loss and conductivity were still remained at low acceptable level owing to the presence of ZnO shell between Zn core and PVDF matrix which serves as an interlayer between the Zn cores preventing them from contacting with each other. The developed Zn@ZnO/PVDF polymer composites with high dielectric constant and low loss are potential for embedded capacitor applications.

Abstract:Flexible dielectric and electronic materials with high dielectric constant (k) and low loss are constantly pursued. Encapsulation of conductive fillers with insulating shells represents a promising approach, and has attracted substantial research efforts. However, progress is greatly impeded due to the lack of a fundamental understanding of the polarization mechanism. In this work, a series of core-shell polymer composites is studied, and the correlation between macroscopic dielectric properties (across entire composites) and microscopic polarization (around single fillers) is investigated. It is revealed that the polarization in polymer conductor composites is determined by electron transport across multiple neighboring conductive fillers-a domain-type polarization. The formation of a core-shell filler structure affects the dielectric properties of tpolymer composites by essentially modifying the filler-cluster size. Based on this understanding, a novel percolative composite is prepared with higher-than-normal filler concentration and optimized shell's electrical resistivity. The developed composite shows both high-k due to enlarged cluster size and low loss due to restrained charge transport simultaneously, which cannot be achieved in traditional percolative composites or via simple core-shell filler design. The revealed polarization mechanism and the optimization strategy for core-shell fillers provide critical guidance and a new paradigm, for developing advanced polymer dielectrics with promising property sets.

Abstract:Ferroelectric/polymer based dielectric nanocomposites deliver high power density, but low discharged energy density (Ue) and charge–discharge efficiency (η), which are resulted from high remnant electrical displacement (Dr) of ferroelectric fillers and large dielectric difference between ferroelectrics and polymers, constrain their use in integrated electronic equipments. Here, we provide an effective and low-cost strategy for developing high-energy–density and high-efficiency dielectric nanocomposites by incorporating core–shell structured PLZST@Al2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) as fillers into P(VDF-HFP) polymer matrix. The introduction of PLZST antiferroelectric (AFE) cores with large maximum electrical displacement (Dmax) and small Dr can substantially increase Dmax-Dr values and narrow D-E loops of dielectric nanocomposites. The addition of Al2O3 shells with wide band gap and dielectric constant near that of the P(VDF-HFP) matrix can prevent the charge injection from electrodes and cause the applied electric field evenly distribute, and thus inhibit the leakage current and increase the breakdown strength (Eb), which are confirmed by finite element simulations. Consequently, benefited from large Dmax-Dr of 7.93 μC/cm2 and Eb of 5281.68 kV/cm, PLZST@Al2O3/P(VDF-HFP) nanocomposites with 3 wt% filler contents exhibit simultaneously a large Ue of 17.95 J/cm3 and high η of 75%, which outperform those of all latest NPs/polymer nanocomposites in terms of overall capacitive performances and are even higher than those achieved in polymer nanocomposites loaded with nanowires or nanofibers fabricated by complicated methods. This study exhibits a promising way to promote the industrialized fabrication of dielectric capacitors through capitalizing on the synergy of the dielectric constant gradient, wide band gap and AFE characteristics of the fillers.

Abstract:Ag nanoparticles@polydopamine (AgNPs@PDA) core–shell particles were prepared by one-step oxidative–reductive reaction, which Ag+ was used as oxidant and dopamine as reducing agent. The dopamine was polymerized to PDA surface and shielded the Ag nanoparticles. The AgNPs@PDA particles were used as fillers and introduced into poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) to prepare the AgNPs@PDA/PVDF dielectric composites. AgNPs were introduced aiming to increase the dielectric constant of the composites and PDA was employed to improve the compatibility between fillers and polymer. The morphology and the dielectric properties of the AgNPs@PDA/PVDF composite films were thoroughly investigated. The influencing factors to the dielectric performances of the composites were studied, including the ratio of AgNO3 and dopamine, pH values of the preparing solution and the fraction of the fillers. The highest dielectric constant of the AgNPs@PDA/PVDF composites was about 53 when the content of fillers was 25wt.% at 100Hz. The percolation threshold of the composites was predicted at about 25.5wt.%.
